Halloweenie Wannabe

Our pals 'Kirby' & 'Wally' write:

Hey Joey & Maggie!

Attached see a pic of "Gourdy" the Dachshund. He was a centerpiece for the Madison Area Dachshunds Group Halloweenie Party last Sunday in Wisconsin. We had 33 Doxies and 22 humans in attendance and had a blast! There's still time to make your own "Gourdy" for trick or treat!

Hey you two - that's just about the coolest thing ever.  We thought that ours was pretty nice until we saw yours.  Either way, the Dachshund-like gourds are a great new Halloween trend!

Sing It: Hallow Wiener Dogs

With just days before the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, it has been reported that two Dachshunds have been roaming the streets protecting New Yorkers from evil spirits and Soho ghouls. A song memorializing our new canine folk heros, Frank & Stein, has been written and recorded by Lovenotes Records artist, songwriter and performer Murray Weinstock with his group, Furry Murray & The Bow Wow Babes.

The song is being featured as a free download on the Dog Tunes website. We envision years of Dachshund events and videos featuring this fun new song from the folks who brought us The Dachs Song.

Have a listen by clicking here, or head on over to Dog Tunes.  Great stuff!

Hollow Wiener Dogs by Murray Weinstock

Spoken: It was a full moon night in Sleepy Hollow,
And the headless horseman was being chased by two Dachshunds, Frank and Stein..

Verse

Winds will howl and leaves will fly,
Dragging chains clatter, pained voices cry.
The season's here when witches thrive,
And all things buried come alive!

When the moon is full, see the vampires crawl,
Listen and you'll hear a werewolf call.
A chill comes up and down my spine,
From a face in the clouds comes Frank and Stein!

Chorus

Hollow Wiener Dogs, guarding us at night,
Hollow Wiener Dogs, showing teeth so bright,
No MONSTER'S safe from the beastly bite
Of Hollow Wiener Dogs till the morning light.

Verse

Beasts and bats go into hidin'
When the headless horseman comes a-ridin.'
That hallowed day, so filled with fear,
Is saved when Frank and Stein appear.

Ghostly bones will weep and whine,
When they see our heros, Frank and Stein.
No evil spirit's safe in the dark,
When Stein and Frank come to bite and bark!

Chorus

Hollow Wiener Dogs, made of witch's brew,
Chews up monsters and leaves no clue.
No Goblin's safe from the beastly bite
Of Hollow Wiener Dogs till the morning light.

Would You Prefer Ketchup Or Mustard On Your Hot Dog?

We live in Chicago, and we'd get kicked out of the city if we chose ketchup.  Thankfully, these two Dachshunds from Alabama don't have to worry about such condiment conundrums, but they sure looked tasty as they competed in the costume contest on Sunday at Woofstock in Mobile, Alabama.  Read all about the event, and see some fun pics, including a wiener race photo at the Press Register.

A MISUNDERSTANDING: (I was talking to my dog!)

A MISUNDERSTANDING:  (I was talking to my dog!)
by Dawn Gaines for the American Dachshund, September, 1969

I talk to my dog a lot, and sometimes use gestures, too.
Although it seems ridiculous, this is what I do:
Before mealtime I say to him something very silly,
Pat his tummy and ask, "Getting hungry in the belly?"

There was twenty feet between us and the court next to ours.
In this sunny little space my neighbor planted flowers.
Our kitchen window was so high I couldn't see a bloom,
But from the open window the aroma filled the room.

How could I know my neighbor was there among the flowers?
(She had a way of growing things and fussed with them for hours.
Working with them there on this hundred-ten degree day,
It was much too hot to work, but she pulled weeds anyway.)

High noon and Bully Boy went into the kitchen with me.
For two hot days he hadn't eaten - now he must be hungry.
Made myself a sandwich of peanut butter and jelly,
Then to my dog I said "Are you hungry in the belly?"

Up popped my startled neighbor from the court next door to ours.
She thought that she was hearing things while weeding out her flowers.
"I shouldn't be working so hard," she told me with a frown.
"This heat is getting me today.  I think I'll go lie down."

Her expression surprised me so, I didn't know what to say.
Besides I felt so stupid, talking to my dog that way!
She hurried off so quickly, I had no time to explain
That I was talking to my dog, and she was really sane!

Have a great Friday.

Injured Dachshund Finds Way To Emergency Room

In one of those odd little stories that makes you think twice about the intelligence of our furry companions, meet red longhair 'Pepper,' and her humans Jerry and Audrey Prokuski, who hail from Mendota, Illinois.  Pepper was attacked in her own backyard by a neighboring pitbull, and after her human mom pulled the offending dog off and took him to a neighbors, little Pepper was nowhere to be found.
Turns out Pepper had headed for the nearby human Emergency Room, even though she had never walked near there before.  The ER staff did their best to fix Pepper up, checked her tags, and called the city clerk's office who then contacted the owners.  Both Pepper and Mrs. Prokuski are recovering from the incident.  Read all about it at the News Tribune.

Joey's Corner: Doggie Lover Doll

Your 'Long and Short of it All' host 'Joey' is a little miffed sometimes when his sister 'Maggie' gets to post her 'Shopping For Dachshunds' columns, so here's Joey's take.  This post may not be appropriate for puppies, so any dogs reading who are under one-year-old need to get along, little doggie.
It's finally here.  The best invention since neuticles.  After years of waiting and hearing about such novelties for humans comes "Doggie Lover Doll" - the world's first sex doll for dogs.  Tired of humping the covers, a favorite pillow, a favorite toy, or your human's leg?
The Doggie Lover Doll is nearly anatomically correct, and it even looks like a Dachshund.  Sure, you may have a thing for big fluffy bitches** like Joey does, but when she won't give you the time of day, and your Dachshund sister is also your littermate, this may be the perfect solution.
The Doggie Lover Doll website also notes health and behavior benefits:

During the doll’s test period with a few canines, the pets showed a better quality of life based on less anxiety, less barking, and less territorial demarcation. In other words, the dogs live a better life, satisfying their repressed sexuality, in some cases for many years.

Get yours at Doggie Lover Doll.

Tell 'em Joey sent ya.

Have a great day!

Dachshund Stories in History: BAN IS PLACED ON THIS CLEVER HOUND

While conducting Dachshund research at a local university, we stumbled upon this fun old article, from The Chicago Defender, April 19, 1913:

Daschund (sic) Taught to Watch the Players During the Progress of Card Games.

Winsted, Conn - Friends of Eugene McCaskey have placed the "no admittance" bar on his daschund whenever he goes to their homes for an evening at cards, because the canine has been taught to watch the floor and seats about a table while a game is in progress.  Not only will he pick up a coin or card which finds its way to the floor and carry it to his master, but the daschund watches players who are in the habit of concealing a card between their legs or on a seat beneath their legs for future playing.
One of Mr. McCaskey's friends was bitten in the leg after concealing a card, hence the edict.  The dog has other sporting activities.  When his master goes fishing along the shore of a lake, he will grab up the pole when the bob disappears in the water and run along with it until the fish is on land.

Maggie's Corner: Shopping For Dachshunds

Like most girls, your Long and Short of it All hostess 'Maggie' loves to shop, and she has been busy scouring magazines and the internet for the newest designs as well as some classic Dachshund gifts that you might like for your beloved Dachshund, or something special that makes your house a home.  And the holidays are right around the corner!  Above, Let this set of Dachshund bookends do all of the work when it comes to keeping your favorite Dachshund books organized.  That's right, it's a new design from Jonathan Adler, and it's available at Barnes and Noble for just $39.95.  Shop smart and search for coupon codes and get it for less.

If you're looking to add a little joy to your life, look no further than this "Halloweenie" Dachshund figurine by Dachshund Lover Jellybean Junction on Etsy.  Measuring in at just 2.5 inches tall, this hand-crafted shorty really enjoys her ballerina costume, and is on sale for just $13.79.  There are multiple Halloweenie figurines to choose from.

And while you're over at Etsy, don't miss the hot hot Dachshund necklaces offered up by Dachshund Lover Rachel Pfeffer.  Inspired by her late, great Doxie 'Rusty,' several Dachshund styles are available, and run from between $40 and $50.

Thanks to our pal 'Clancy' for sending this one in - it's a Dachshund box measuring in at 10.5 inches long. Featuring a secret compartment and "beautiful hand-painted nature scenes," he ain't cheap at all.  As a matter of fact, he'll set you back $495 at the Toy Shoppe.

And finally, a hot water bottle is a Dachshund's best friend on a cool winter's day, and it wouldn't be comfy without a Dachshund cover on it.  Pricing in at £28.00, this one comes with a hot water bottle inside and the Dachshund print cover is fully removeable for washing.  Find it along with Dachshund pillows, Dachshund dog beds, and whatever you can think of to put a Dachshund print on at Emily Bond.

Twenty-Five Dachshunds Delivered to Nebraska Dachshund Rescue

Nebraska Dachshund Rescue sure has their work cut out for them - 25 long dogs arrived in Omaha last night; they were surrendered from an Iowa breeder.  Excerpt from Action 3 News:

Julie Siebler is Vice President of Nebraska Dachshund Rescue. She opens her home to the dogs and the volunteers taking care of them.
Julie Siebler: "They have a definite smell about them from being kennelled for so long and just staying within a confined area. I don't know if they've ever been bathed."
But nothing beats the smell of freedom.

If the video doesn't appear for you, you can check it out and of course read more at Action 3 News.

Daisy in the Wiener's Circle

Meet black and tan smooth 'Daisy,' and her human, Dylan Feickert, 9, of Sebring, Florida.  They took part in the wiener dog races at the Oktoberfest in Avon Park, Florida, on Saturday, beating out 32 other Dachshunds to take home the prize.  Way to go!  The Dachshunds were the biggest hit of the festival this year (of course!), which drew in over 4,000 people.  Read all about it at Highlands Today.

She's Not So Wicked

This Dachsund may be dressed as the wicked witch, but she's too cute to be scary.  She took part in the 5th annual Dog Day Masquerade in Times Square, New York, yesterday.  See photos from the event at the New York Daily News.

A Note from Joey and Maggie: The Pumpkin Patch

We sure had fun shopping for pumpkins in the city yesterday.  Joey had his eye on the prize to his right, but Maggie wasn't so interested - she'd rather just sit around and look pretty.

We had no idea what a llama was doing in the pumpkin patch, but he sure kept a very close eye on us.  We were too busy scrounging for dropped food used to feed the animals at the petting zoo to even notice him though.  As a matter of fact, we would have been happy to have been in a pen with all the goats if people were going to handfeed us that delicious "kibble" all day. So yummy!

Back at home, you can see that ultimately we chose the pumpkin which was most Dachshund-like.  Because we love Dachshunds.

We're So Blessed

And now for a little Friday Funny?

This devout Christian couple felt it important to own an equally Christian pet.
So, they went shopping. At a kennel specializing in Christian dogs, they found a little black and tan smooth Dachshund they liked quite a lot. When they asked the dog to fetch the Bible, he did it in a flash. When they instructed him to look up Psalm 23, he complied equally fast, using his stubby paws with dexterity. They were impressed, purchased the animal, and went home, piously.
That night they had friends over. They were so proud of their new Dachshund and his skills, they called the dog and showed off a little. The friends were impressed, and asked whether the dog was able to do any of the usual dog tricks, as well.
This stopped the couple cold, as they hadn't thought about "normal" tricks.
Well, they said, "let's try this out." Once more they called the long dog, and they clearly pronounced the command, "Heel!"
Quick as a wink, the dog jumped up on the guest's lap, put his short paw on the man's forehead, closed his eyes in concentration, and bowed his head and began to pray.

Dachshund Dish

The late Mrs. Astor and Dachshund 'Freddy'

In what may be a final footnote to the glamorous life of New York socialite, civic leader, philanthropist, and Dachshund Lover Brooke Astor, her son, 85-year-old Anthony Marshall has been found guilty of defrauding his mother, and is looking at 25 years in prison.  His trial, which started in March of this year, was riddled with ice cold personal attacks towards all parties involved, from Mr. Marshall, and even to Mrs. Astor, in attempts to discredit her faculties.  Mrs. Astor's recent Dachshunds, 'Boysie' and 'Girlsie,' were referenced often in the trial in regards to how she was caring for them, how Marshall perceived them, as well as several off-the-cuff remarks about them which are a little too tawdry to repeat here. Expect an appeal on the judgment.

Count your blessings if you're poor like us.  Read more at the New York Post.

California Woman Unhappy After Dachshund Adoption Denied

Ashley Inglis of Bakersfield, California, saw a dachshund she wanted to adopt last week at the local SPCA shelter, but she was given bad news. "It was being saved for Wednesday," she said. Wednesday also happens to be the day the SPCA holds its annual adoption event.
We're hoping she can bring home her new friend today, but after taking the issue to the local news station, it's anybody's guess.  Find out more at Bakersfield Now.
There's one thing we've learned over the years with rescue groups and shelters - it's that they do the hard work, and they make the rules.  Often times potential adoptors feel left out because of some of the rules, but it's usually in the best interest of the dogs.  We're not so sure in this case.

Innovative Stem Cell Treatment Helps Henry the Dachshund to Walk Again

Meet six-year-old 'Henry,' who hails from Birmingham, England.  Henry "went down" last November, and it was thought that he would never walk again.  His human, Sarah Beech, heard about a new trial at Cambridge University where stem cells would be harvested from his nose and injected into his back to repair his injured spine.  Just a month after the cells were injected, Henry began to walk and wag his tail, taking up to four steps on his own.  We're rooting for you Henry!  It is thought that this treatment could one day help humans with spinal injuries as well.
Read all about the innovative research and see several pics at The Daily Mail.  Thanks to our pals Flying Dachshunds Films and  'Polly' for sending in the link to this story.

Dachshund Foot Scraper

Speaking of cast iron Dachshund foot scrapers, check out this nice old article we found doing Dachshund research at a local university.  It's from the Chicago Daily Tribune, December 6, 1931:

No dire need, perhaps, of a foot scraper at our door these modern times, when city and suburban civic associations pave our streets and keep our walks shoveled clean (sometimes!) on snowy, blizzardy days.  Still, there are occasions when it has its uses and, of ye olden days, a foot scraper bids one enter.  In many guises we see it.  Here it takes the form of a black iron Dachshund, alertly waiting the moment he can be of service to the incoming guest.

There are many styles of these foot scrapers available in antique stores, flea markets, and on e-bay; some are old, and some are not.  The one pictured above is obviously pretty old, as the article attests. Looking at the photo in yesterday's post, it is pictured in the back left.  It is the granddaddy of all Dachshund foot scrapers, measuring in at 22", and weighing 30 pounds!  Expect to pay anywhere from $100 - $300 for it.  We've heard that some of these may have a maker's mark of some sort.
The one in front of it, with a marked bump on the nose, is not old, but is nicely styled. The one to the right, facing in the other direction, is a small version of the granddaddy, and has a plate on the bottom to be screwed down - it is also old, and can be found without the plate.

Heading outside to the front porch of the casa de Long and Short of it All are two more available styles.  (Let's lift these up to get a better photo - they're heavy!)  The pudgy one in front is definitely new, and can be found for as little as $10 sometimes; it does not have a marked bump on its nose, and has angular, almost art deco styling in the snout and ears.
The larger one behind it sort of looks like the granddaddy, but smaller with a curly tail.  We got this at an antique store for a reasonable price of about $50, so we're not exactly sure of its age - most likely later than the granddaddy at least.
Regardless of the age, foot scrapers are fun to have and collect for the Dachshund Enthusiast, and as the Tribune article eludes, they are a welcoming sign to your home - much like the good little Dachshunds inside.
