Firefighters Rescue Dachshund Stuck in Tree in Cemetery

We couldn't make this one up if we tried!  We've all heard of firefighters rescuing cats from trees, but have you ever heard of a dog needing rescue from a tree, much less a Dachshund?  Well, meet red longhair 'Cappy,' a pretty rescue-girl who hails from Beaufort, South Carolina.  Cappy went missing about 6 PM Sunday, and her human, Mimi Austin, asked for help finding her on facebook.  So, her friends joined in the search at about 12:30 in the morning.  Excerpt from The Island Packet:

They went straight to the cemetery, which is close to Austin's house.
Flashlights in hand, the women searched until they thought they heard barking in the back of the cemetery.
"We rushed to where we thought we heard it, and we traced it to this big oak tree with major brush around it," she said. "Once we got to the tree, the barking stopped."
Austin was on her porch and came rushing over at the familiar sound of Cappy's bark. Thinking her dog was caught in the brush, she started cutting some of it away with clippers.
The women started getting frustrated with searching in the dark, when two Beaufort police officers stopped by to see what three women, a dog and a car were doing in the rear of the cemetery, Mrs. Austin's friend Kim Bonturi said. One officer shone his light up in the tree and spotted the dog.
The dachshund had climbed up 12 feet in the tree, out of reach of the women and officers even with Bonturi's eight-foot ladder.
The women had to wait about 45 minutes until firefighters Vezin and David Evans, who had been out on a medical call, arrived with a ladder.
"She was just happy to be in her mom's arms," Bonturi said of the dachshund.

Police Buy Dachshund Puppy For Canadian Girl Scammed On Internet

What a nice gesture by the Hamilton Police Service Division Three, out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Laura Gallego Roldan had sent off her money to the scammers, and of course the puppy never arrived.  Excerpt from The Toronto Sun:

Laura Gallego Roldan thought her dreams of having a puppy of her own had been crushed — until some Hamilton Police officers stepped up and bought her one.

Ten-year-old Laura found a little Dachshund on a well-known Internet classified site and convinced her parents to pay for the puppy which was supposed to be coming from eastern Canada.

The financial transaction took place but no puppy was ever delivered — leaving the family without money to buy another dog.

“I was really sad when the other puppy didn’t come but now I feel great because it is nice to be helped,” Laura said. “That was important to the police so I wrote them a letter to thank them.” Laura and her dog, Marla Maples, visited the police station Wednesday to say thanks in person.

“I like taking her for walks and I am just really happy,” she said.

Laura’s family reported the scam to police on May 6 and word spread quickly about the heart-broken girl and that is when officers at Hamilton Police’s Division Three uniform patrol took action.

Staff Sgt. Glenn Bullock called the SPCA to find out how much it would cost the get Laura another Dachshund.

“The officers reached into their pockets,” Bullock said. “We try to do good things and help out when we can in cases like this where this little girl and her family get scammed.”

The officers raised enough money to buy a puppy, give it the necessary shots and make a donation to the SPCA.

Way to go.

Proving once again that Dachtober may be over, but it's never too late to dress your Dachshund in costume, here's a Dachshund News Roundup on a seasonably cool, yet thankfully dry autumn day, Monday, November 16, 2009.  Can we get a woof?!  Above, 'Marcello,' a 5-year-old black and tan smooth who hails from warm Miami Beach, Florida, won best costume at the second annual Paws in the Park fundraiser on November 8 in Miami.  Over $15,000 was raised to benefit Friends Forever Rescue.  Way to go!  Read more and see lots of pics at The Miami Herald.

Kisses!  In Dachshund show dog news, 81 Dachshunds competed yesterday for Best of Breed at the 28th Annual Dachshund Fanciers Association of Berks County in Bern Township, Pennsylvania.  Above, Carol Johnson of Flourtown, gets a kiss from handsome red longhair 'Rory' during the show. In Dachshund healthcare news, smooth brindle 'Dezi Howell' receives therapeutic laser treatment after her spay at at Caring Hands Veterinary Hospital in Billings, Montana.  Although the procedure is still considered alternative, research is showing that rarely do animal patients have inflammation or infection in the incision after the treatment.  Read all about it and some other new veterinary technologies at The Independent Record.

In Dachshund rescue news, this handsome senior black and tan smooth was found tied to a bench in a park with his Red Heeler-mix sister last Monday.  A nearby Fred Meyer store employee found a note in an elevator which asked the finder to rescue her two dogs.  He has been given the name 'Guy' at a nearby shelter.  Read more at The Curry Pilot.

And finally, in Dachshund sporting news, meet 'Bruce,' a red smooth on a mission at Saturday's master earthdog trials in Woodland, California.  The event, sponsored by The Border Terrier Club of the Redwoods, featured dogs from all over the state showing off their tunneling skills. 

Mike Delikowski of Modesto spent much of his time calling after his dachshund, Bruce, who went off exploring.
"Bruce, I've got the rat," he shouted, to no avail.

A Note From Joey and Maggie: SANTA!

So on Saturday we had our holiday party with Chicago Dachshund Lovers, our local dachshund meetup group....talk about fun! There were about 60 dachshunds to play with! Dad was busy taking photos while we were busy scoping out the food table, when who should walk in but Santa Claus!

When Dolly the Dachshund arrived at Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS), she exhibited signs of severe animal mistreatment and neglect. But despite her obvious medical problems, MCAS staff and their veterinary hospital team were immediately captivated by Dolly’s spirit.
“She was in pretty bad shape when she arrived at the shelter, with a severe case of mange,” said Dr. Meghan Romney, head of Shelter Medicine at Multnomah County Animal Services. “Everyone who cared for her was touched by Dolly’s sweet disposition and spirit.”
An animal care donation fund is being re-named “Dolly’s Fund” to help finance medical care for animal patients like Dolly. “We see dozens of neglected and mistreated pets like Dolly every year, some in very serious condition. Concerned pet lovers can contribute to Dolly’s Fund to increase our ability to treat more homeless pets in our shelter hospital,” says Mike Oswald, director of Multnomah County Animal Services.
Multnomah County Animal Services’ animal hospital medical team triages every one of the nearly 10,000 pets that are cared for each year at the shelter. Last year MCAS officers investigated 279 animal abandonment cases and 704 animal abuse/neglect cases.
“Dolly is expected to make a full recovery, thanks to the efforts of our medical team. And Dolly’s Fund will have a huge impact on our efforts to expand the care of medically treatable abandoned animals,” stated Dr. Romney.

Pickles Wins Centralia Dachshund Races

Meet 'Pickles,' the pretty black and tan wire-hair who beat out 51 other wiener dogs on Saturday to win the Wiener Races in Centralia, Washington. Way to go Pickles, and enjoy that $100 prize! Excerpt from The Chronicle: Pickles.
It’s not a name that inspires fear, but on the racing circuit, being underestimated is often the best strategy.
With her scruffy face and faraway stare, Pickles was the longshot at Saturday’s first-ever Wiener Dog Races at Pioneer West Garden Center in Centralia.
Other racers were leaner, hungrier for victory, and more aerodynamic by wiener dog standards.
But once Pickles hit the outdoor track, mouths dropped open, stumpy wiener dog knees buckled, and the faces of the other 51 racers grew pale.
This dog, this Pickles, possessed a rare combination of lightning speed, unwavering calm and the pristine focus of a champion.
“She’s fast,” said her owner and coach, Jane Toulson. “I thought she’d do well.”
The grand prize, $100, will go to enhancing Pickles’ already winning diet, she added.

Dachshunds Walking Across Wisconsin in the News

What a great bonding experience for 'Paige' and her mom! Excerpt from the Chetek Alert: Hazel Sinclair of Minnetonka, Minn., and her walking partner, Paige, a miniature dachshund, recently walked over 250 miles across the state of Wisconsin in order to raise awareness for Huntington’s Disease. So, she and Paige walked. And they walked. And they walked. Down county highways, past farmers' fields, at a pace of seven to 10 miles per day.

Sinclair says she has raised about $3,200 to this point stemming from her long walk, a lot of it due to her constant, yet diminutive, traveling companion."She was an outstanding ice-breaker for me," says Sinclair. "People would stop and say, 'Oh, look at the cute puppy,' and that would get us started talking about our walk. The people would then ask about the walk, and that would give me the chance to talk about HD. I got quite a few donations that way." Read the rest and see an additional photo.
