Oh Yes You CAN Catch Me: Stray Dachshund Living In Woods For Five Months Reunited With Human!
Smiles everyone, SMILES! Norma Jean is reunited with her human.
If you checked in with us on Friday, you read about this beautiful chocolate girl who has been living in the woods for 5 long months, eluding both authorities and the citizens of Gastonia, North Carolina. The story was troubling for many reasons, as folks noted in the comments: she could get hit by a car, winter is fast approaching, and where on earth was her human who apparently let her get away from the local PetSmart? Well, all questions have been answered in one of the most heart-warming Dachshund stories of the year - just read on Dachshund Lovers, read on. Just when your faith in humanity was about to hit an all-time low, via the Gaston Gazette:
The little brown dachshund that captured many hearts during her months of homelessness reunited with her owner Friday morning.
Norma Jean, N.J. for short, eluded people for more than five months while living in the woods beside Regal Cinema in Franklin Square. Various people tried to coax her to their cars – whistling, waving food, bringing other dogs. Nothing worked.
A hot dog, her owner and the sound of her name proved the only successful combination to reel in the little girl.
Christina Baucom’s dogs, N.J. and Skynyrd, were like her children. But the family was divided when Baucom and her husband split up.
Forced to move from her home into an apartment, Baucom was faced with a dilemma. She couldn’t afford the $250 pet deposit and additional monthly fees to take her dogs with her.
Baucom called out to her Facebook friends to find homes for the dachshunds.
Skynyrd went to an old high school friend of Baucom’s, and N.J. moved in with a woman who said she’d provide a good home.
Over several months Baucom kept track of Skynyrd on Facebook, but N.J.’s new owner would never respond to messages.
Baucom hoped that both her babies were being cared for.
Baucom glanced at The Gazette front page Thursday and gasped. N.J.’s picture was prominently placed on the page, and the article described her dog as homeless.
She read how people throughout Gaston County visited her pup, bringing her food, water, toys and a dog house. But N.J. was skittish and ran if anyone got too close.
Baucom cried.
Then she sprang into action. The Lowell woman took an unpaid day off work and spent nearly 12 hours camped out by the cinema.
Strangers stopped by. Her friends came in shifts.
A police officer stayed with her a while, suggesting she leave something behind so that N.J. would smell it and remember her scent.
Baucom put out a blanket and went home. Sleeping seemed impossible.
Baucom drove back to the theater around 1:30 a.m. Friday, but crowds from the midnight showing of “Breaking Dawn: Part 2” filled the parking lot.
Baucom returned at 6:30 a.m. to make another attempt before work. N.J. wasn’t visible.
She put a handful of dog food on the blanket and got in her car. Just as she started to drive away, N.J. darted into the parking lot.
Baucom got out of her car, sat on the ground, held out a piece of hot dog and called to her dog.
N.J. ran full speed ahead, jumped in Baucom’s lap and licked her face.
When she first set out to find N.J., Baucom planned to give the dog to her mother so she could avoid the apartment fees, but still have contact with her pet. That may not be necessary.
People who initially rallied behind N.J. are now standing by Baucom.
One person has offered to pay the dog’s initial vet bills to get her vaccines caught up. Others say they want to pitch in to pay Baucom’s pet deposit fees.
Tears streamed down Baucom’s face as she described holding N.J. again, and feeling the warmth of the kindness of strangers.
Thanks so much to our pal 'Caya' for sending in the link to this wonderful reunion. You can read more about it at the Gaston Gazette.
Welcome Home N.J.

You Can't Catch Me: Stray Dachshund Eludes Authorities and Community for Five Months!
“It’s hard for us to chase a dog that’s only a few inches tall.”
She's living like a King in Gastonia, North Carolina and has no intentions of being caught. Why should she? She's become quite popular among the citizens who visit her every day and give her table scraps and sausage biscuits from Bojangles - just don't try to approach her - or she'll run off into the nearby woods. The little chocolate girl has been on the lam for five long months now, apparently escaping from her human while visiting a nearby PetSmart. Via The Gaston Gazette:
Gaston County Animal Control officers have made multiple attempts to lay their hands on the dog, to no avail. Several dog lovers also tried to capture the canine – bringing food and attempting to gain her trust.
The amount of attention the dog has gotten is atypical, according to Steve Rhyne with animal control. He guessed that her sweet appearance paired with a busy shopping center as the reason she’s become so popular.
Animal Control officers make regular stops to check up on the dog and attempt to capture her.
Capt. Scott Bates drives by practically every morning, often bringing some of his dogs’ treats. She won’t take the bait. In fact, the dog often turns her nose up at Bates’ dog bones. He said other visitors feed the pup more tantalizing morsels.
Hamburgers and table scraps may be why the animal isn’t interested in the dog food put in traps by Animal Control.
“It’s definitely not going to go in a trap when it’s getting sausage biscuits from Bojangles’,” said Rhyne.
The animal lives back in the woods that border I-85. Officers can’t easily chase the dog into the thicket of kudzu and briars.
“This dog is very crafty,” said Rhyne. “It’s hard for us to chase a dog that’s only a few inches tall.”

Georgia Dachshund Shot At Close Range With Paintball Gun And BB Gun: $7,500 Reward
CBS Atlanta 46
A 1-year-old Dachshund was dropped off at animal control in Clayton County, Georgia last Wednesday after being discovered with wounds from an attack by someone with a paintball gun and a BB gun. According to CBS Atlanta, Bonnie Adams with Partners4Pets took the puppy to a veterinarian, who diagnosed him with a poison-infected wound from a paintball gun and six wounds from a BB gun. The pup's brother was also attacked and sustained cuts or tears to his ears. Here's an excerpt from the story:
Investigators with Clayton County Animal Control are working on leads in the case of animal cruelty against two dachshunds.
Investigators with Clayton County Animal Control are working on leads in the case of animal cruelty against two dachshunds.
Bullet, a barely 1-year-old puppy, was dropped off at animal control on Wednesday, along with his brother Pistol.
Someone shot Bullet at close range with a paintball gun and a BB gun.
It's a case of animal cruelty that could have cost Bullet his life if Bonnie Adams with Partner4Pets hadn't stepped in.
The nonprofit group took the dog to the Union City Veterinary Clinic for emergency surgery.
"Generally if we're not here, animal control would have to call a vet in to euthanize the dog because they don't want a dog sitting in the back suffering," said Adams.
The vet told CBS Atlanta News Bullet was dangerously infected with poison from the paintball attack when he arrived on Wednesday. He also had six small wounds from a BB gun.
Tubes were inserted into his hip area to help with drainage.
Pistol wasn't shot but he was abused. He appeared to have cuts or tears to his ears and needed medical attention.
If you have any information about the abused dogs, you are urged to contact Clayton County Animal Control. The Atlanta Humane Society announced Sunday it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. PETA announced yesterday that it has added $2,500 to that amount.
We certainly hope and pray that Bullet and Pistol make a complete recovery and find the loving homes that they deserve.

Unvaccinated Dachshund Euthanized After Skunk Encounter
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of little smooth chocolate 'Coco,' seen here, after a series of unfortunate incidents and an archaic government led to the California native being euthanized after a tussle with a skunk in the back yard where he received a "minor scratch on the nose." It seems he later bit his human's finger, which became infected, and the story goes downhill from there. Excerpt from the Long Beach Press Telegram:
Coco was an aggressive watchdog, not timid about rushing into the backyard bushes where an intruding skunk sought sanctuary.
The dog's encounter about 3 a.m. June 12 would result in a scratch on its nose - and lead to the 6-year-old Dachshund's euthanasia three days later. Officials from Long Beach Animal Care Services - also known as Animal Control - say the pet was euthanized because of state law requirements for animals that had not been vaccinated for rabies prior to being injured by a possible rabies carrier. One of the pet's owners countered that the Dachshund had been tested for rabies, and the test results had been negative. "Coco was the family dog," said Robert DeSimone. "We had him since he was 2 months old and were totally devastated to hear that he was killed by Long Beach Animal Control, despite the fact that he tested negative for rabies - and were told by Animal Control he'd only be killed if he was positive for rabies. ... I'm incredibly sad and angry that he's gone now." Animal Control officials said that the dog's blood was tested for signs of rabies to quickly determine whether the skunk was rabid and they needed to locate it. However, the blood tests for rabies are considered unreliable. The only reliable way to check for rabies is to check the animal's brain after death.
DeSimone, who lives near El Dorado Park, said Coco had only a minor scratch on the nose. The following night, June 13, DeSimone said he attempted to pet the dog. But it growled, prompting a scolding - and that, in turn, spurred the irritated watchdog to bite the scolding finger, the pet owner recalled. DeSimone said the finger was swollen, so he went to Los Alamitos Medical Center for treatment. A staffer called Animal Care Services, which picked up the dog June 14. "I was told (the dog) was going to the quarantined 10 days," DeSimone recalled. But the following day, June 15, the dog was euthanized, despite blood test results showing it didn't have rabies. Ted Stevens, acting manager for Long Beach Animal Care Services, confirmed the finding, explaining that state law requires the euthanasia of any pet that doesn't have a current rabies vaccination when it is injured by a high-risk animal. "Since we could not locate or test the skunk, a high risk for rabies, we had to assume the dog was exposed and treat him that way," he explained.
Stevens emphasized the importance of regular vaccinations and licensing your pet. "It would have made all the difference in this case," he said.
You can't fight the rabies vaccination laws on the books in every state.

Kate Spade Dachshund
Thanks so much to the Dynamic Duo 'Duncan' and 'Cosmo' for writing in:
Dear Joey and Rowdy,
Hey guys, our mom is a bit of a fashion nut, so when this Kate Spade photo showed up in her inbox this morning, she just had to forward it to you. There's more about this handsome guy on their blog too:
we can't resist a handsome guy in a suit-especially when he's of the furry variety. our latest crush, brady, stole hearts (and a few snacks) on the set of our summer web shoot. we asked his momager, suzy k., about his dapper doggy style and future modeling his mug.
brady kelsay.
what are his stats: age, breed, etc.?
he's a long-haired dachshund, and he's eight-years-old.
is this his first turn in the spotlight?
surprisingly yes, but he's been admired all his life.
sum up his style.
low-key frizzy chic.
is he a backyard-digger or more of a city stutter?
although he was born in the city, he has quickly become an avid chipmunk-chaser in the 'burbs.
does he do any special tricks?
he says, "please, that's for amateur dogs, wouldn't you say?"
how does he like to pass his days?
sleeping on his back waiting for his mom to come home and give him chicken treats.
will he be woofing it up on the big screen any time soon?
maybe, but he's very selective.
From our Fashion Hounds Duncan and Cosmo (front): Anyway, we're going to get back to burrowing under the covers and doing more masculine dachshund things. Sheesh.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Josh Duhamel Teams Up With Petsmart Charities
Transformers star and husband of singer Fergie, Josh Duhamel, is on a campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption. He's blogging about it on Huffington Post, talking about it at People magazine, and even teaming up with Petsmart Charities as seen in the above video to get the word out. Mr. Duhamel talks open and candidly at People magazine about the love of his Dachshunds:
All it took was a little Meatloaf for Josh Duhamel to become a convert.
Six years ago, the actor and his wife Fergie were looking to provide a companion for their 1-year-old dachshund Zoe, so they searched online and found another dachshund through a rescue.
"Meatloaf was truly a beautiful dog," Duhamel tells PEOPLE of the aging dachshund he brought into his home. "He was the most lovable, appreciative, soulful little dude. He just turned out to be such a great pet, such a great friend, and ever since then I've been an advocate of rescuing."
True to his word, Duhamel has partnered with PetSmart Charities' High-Five for Pet Adoption campaign, which celebrates the five million pets that have been adopted at PetSmart Adoption Centers since 1994.
Still, many millions more need homes. "I wanted to make aware how much of a problem it is in this country," he says. "I can speak from experience: [adopting] was the smartest thing we've done when it comes to owning a pet."
Rescue hadn't been on Duhamel's radar when he brought home Zoe while working on the NBC drama Las Vegas – and a disappointed colleague took it upon herself to educate the actor.
"When she found out that we bought Zoe, she gave me an earful, and that's when I first heard about pet adoption," Duhamel says. "Ever since then, I tell anybody who's going to get a pet that that's the way to go, not just because it's the right thing to do but because they make incredible pets."
Meatloaf was one of them. "From the very beginning, Zoe was taken well care of," Duhamel says. "We call her the spoiled little Brentwood dog because she never knew any hardship, unlike Meatloaf, who totally appreciated everything. He was just so loving and he was always so consistent." In his advancing age, the dachshund became afflicted by a degenerative brain disease and died on April 1 in his sleep.
"We have his ashes in a box," Duhamel says. "We were going to bury it and put a little memorial out, but we decided we wanted to keep it on the mantle at home because – I dunno, we just couldn't bury him for some reason. We just wanted to keep him close."
The shelter dogs that Duhamel has met since working with PetSmart Charities have also reminded him of Meatloaf. "They all seem to have that same characteristic of gratitude," he says. "I can only imagine what it's like in some of these shelters. When they do get a loving home, they truly appreciate it."

Heroic Canadian Dachshund Inducted Into Purina Hall Of Fame
Way to go 'Bree!'
As one of the longest running pet recognition programs in Canada, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame has recognized the life-saving heroics of pets and service animals for more than four decades. Since its inception in 1968, 155 animals have been inducted - 128 dogs, 26 cats and one horse. Yesterday, a smooth chocolate Dachshund named 'Bree,' who hails from Blissfield, New Brunswick, was one of four animals, three dogs and one cat, to be inducted for 2012. We're so proud of you Bree! Excerpt from Canada Newswire:
Last September, three days before owner Michele Gilks' 50th birthday, Bree, her two-year-old Dachshund, tried to wake Michele up in the middle of the night by putting her snout in Michele's mouth, licking her face and frantically digging next to her. When Michele finally awoke, she felt an overwhelming "drowning" feeling and began gasping desperately for air. Bree's antics also woke Michele's husband who called an ambulance at once. When the paramedics arrived, Michele was put on oxygen and rushed to the hospital due to her dangerously high blood pressure. At the emergency room, Michele was diagnosed with a severe case of sleep apnea - a potentially life-threatening condition that causes a person to stop breathing during sleep. This wasn't the first time Bree had woken Michele up from sleep in the middle of the night and now she understood why: Bree was helping Michele breathe whenever she stopped. If Bree hadn't been watching over Michele that night, she would have died in her sleep from lack of oxygen. Today, Michele is receiving treatment for her sleep apnea and Bree no longer wakes her during the night. Michele feels like she's been given another chance at life and she's eternally grateful to Bree for that gift.
"I was unaware that I had severe sleep apnea, but Bree sensed something was wrong with me immediately. Without her persistence to wake me from sleep apnea episodes, especially the severe episode last September, I wouldn't be here today," said Michele Gilks, owner of the two-year-old Dachshund. "She is my personal hero, and we're so thrilled that Bree is being recognized for her heroic efforts by the Purina Animal Hall of Fame."

Dachshund Attacked in Own Home by Pit Bull
Meet poor little 18-month-old 'Mac,' who hails from Watertown, New York. A loose Pit Bull charged into his house and started attacking him last weekend. Luckily his Dad came to his rescue, stabbing and killing the Pit Bull. Not exactly a fun-filled story to be sharing on a wonderful Friday, but it just goes to show you that you can never let your guard down, Dachshund Brethren. We hope that Mac has a complete recovery from this horrific ordeal.
