City Dachshund

This video by youtuber iamgobbo highlights handsome black and tan smooth 'Oscar' and his new 'Mr. Bill' toy, but what we're really fascinated with, outside of the fact that Oscar's City Dad needs to clean his apartment, is the sheer amount of time it takes to get from Point A to Point B.  It's a solid 2.5 minutes to go from the lobby to the apartment. 
And spending 2.5 minutes to get back to your home is one thing, it's the other way around that really makes us wonder because when you've got to go potty really bad, that 2.5 minutes must seem like 2.5 hours.  And lord only knows how far away you have to go once you're outside of the building to find a patch of grass.  It's no wonder lots of Dachshunds who live in high rises use pee pads.

Dachshundist George Richards Passes

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Dachshund Lover George Richards, 100, who passed away June 17, 2012, at Hospice of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD. You will remember George and his beloved Dachshund 'Hummel,' from this video we posted in November of 2009.  The video went on to reach viral status, with nearly 140,000 views on Vimeo.  George was 97 here.  Via The Baynet.com:

George joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served aboard the DD794 USS Irwin in the Pacific. After being honorably discharged he was employed by the Department of Agriculture for 35 dedicated years. During this time, he spent two memorable years in India. In 1967 he moved to Bushwood, Maryland, where he spent ten years before moving to Sun City Center, FL. After spending nine years in Florida, George moved back to Leonardtown, MD, in 1986. George had many extracurricular activities, which included gardening, photography, driving an ambulance while residing in Florida, and volunteering as a first aide instructor for the American Red Cross. However, his passion was with his dachshunds. He loved working with and training his beloved dogs. He was a member of the Richmond Dog Obedience Club, where he won many awards; the Chesapeake Kennel Club, the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, Southern Maryland Barbershop Chorus, the Bowie Knights of Harmony, and St. Paul's Methodist Church.

With the passing of Dachtober, 2011, most of the wiener races across the country and around the world have come to an end for the season, save for the Wienerschnitzel Wiener National Finals which will take place in sunny California in December. 
But it's never too early to start training for next year's Dachshund races - here the incredibly handsome black and tan wirehair 'Jasper von Kiebitzhörn' shows that he's one to watch out for in 2012.  Take notice.

I thought I'd bring you some Dachshund news from the Virgina Henrico Pet Expo. Our little long haired miniature Dachshund Gauis Baltar participated in both the trick demo and the dog agility demo. He was quite a hit, especially since he was the only small dog to participate in the tricks demo. This video highlights some of the highlights of his performances (With a few new tricks since our last video).

A HOME FOR KITTY: CHAPTER 3: Introducing a Cat to a Dog in Your Home

Gauis Rocks: Expert Trick Dachshund - Amazing Video!

A Note From Joey and Maggie: Maggie is in The Dog House

This little angel wouldn't do anything wrong, would she?

It was a beautiful autumn Sunday morning.  The birds were chirping, the weather was nice, the sun was shining.  Your 'Long and Short of it All' hosts 'Joey' and 'Maggie' enjoyed a long morning walk, meeting lots of their neighborhood friends, and then devoured a nice Sunday breakfast - raw salmon and bone with a slightly cooked egg on top - sunny side up, just the way they like it.
After breakfast, Maggie was listening to some relaxing Joni Mitchell, and then resigned herself to catching some rays - taking advantage of the south-facing windows and especially enjoying Dad's brand new 2-day-old super thick and comfy Australian hand-tufted wool rug.  If there is a doggie heaven, then surely it must be something like this.  Dad even took these photos.  Maggie had been at the grooomer's just the day before, and the bows on her ears still hadn't fallen out - how cute could she possibly be?
The lazy day progressed.  We helped Dad do some garden cleanup on the veranda, and then played in some leaves - crashing into the big piles before Dad could place them in the trash bin, what fun!
Soon it was time for bed.  Dad went to turn the light out near the couch, walking on his cushy new wool rug, enjoying the feel of every warm firm fiber through his socks, with a cocky grin on his face that he often gets when he's generally pleased.
SQUISH.  What was that?   SQUISH.  Huh?  WHY IS THIS WET?  MAGGIE!  We were just resting on our little bed, and suddenly he glances over at us, darts flying out of his eyes in our general direction.  "We didn't do anything," our expressions explained.
See, Maggie is a marker.  She loves to mark outside when she goes for walks, lifting her hind leg as high as it will go on everything she can - it's very un-ladylike.  At nearly nine years old, there was never any problem with her marking in the house - excecpt last winter for the first time ever, and those episodes ceased after a few weeks and some re-direction.
BUT THE BRAND NEW RUG?  TWO DAYS OLD?  Dad was hot and called his trainer friend, Kim, of Kim's Dog Coaching, who said "Well, what do you expect?  You know she's a marker, and you bring a new rug in the house - made of animal hair?  Well, it's not a new rug anymore.  Now it's Maggie's."  Then she gave Dad some tips on preventing it from happening again.
Maggie almost didn't get to sleep in the big bed last night, but the trainer said that there was no such cause and effect relationship in the dog world - she peed on the rug, wasn't caught in the act, and it's over. 
Maggie is still laying low this morning however.

Obedient Dachshund: George Richards & Hummel at Dachshund Specialty 2009

Peaches and Piper also provided a little more background:  The level of competition is "Utility B," which is the most advanced level in obedience trials. While 'Hummel' the Dachshund does well, the remarkable feature is that the handler is 97 years old.

Sooner is an 11-month-old mini that graduated from the Neuman K-9 Academy pet dog boot camp in Southern Minnessota. The program covered sit, down, heel, sit + stay, down + stay, place, recall, treadmill training, and etiquette (no jumping up or barging through doors).

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer

Who? Every dog's hero, that's who! Cesar Millan, born August 27th, 1969, is a professional dog trainer (although in his words, he "rehabilitates dogs, trains people"). He is best known for his television series, Dog Whisperer, which is currently in its fourth season and airs on the National Geographic Channel. He is also the co-author of the best selling books, Cesar's Way, and Be the Pack Leader.
Like most dog lovers, we're literally glued to our seats every Friday night watching Dog Whisperer, and there was never a more exciting night for dachshund lovers than when Cesar adopted his own dachshund in Season 3! Cesar Millan Inc. was gracious to provide the above beautiful photo of Cesar with his red smooth rescue 'Molly' for The Long and Short of it All. This is Molly's story from Cesar Millan, Inc.:

In season three of Dog Whisperer, Cesar worked with the volunteers at United Hope for Animals in their mission to rescue stray dogs from the streets of Tijuana. While there, he fell in love with a rescued dachshund named Molly!

"I've always wanted to own a dachshund, and I guess I came here to help these wonderful ladies with a little knowledge, but they're going to help me to fulfill my dream!"- Cesar Millan

If you've never been to one of Cesar's live seminars, we can attest that they are a great learning experience. His only 2008 appearance is right around the corner in Atlanta, GA, on December 6th. Here's a great excerpt from a seminar in Baltimore, MD, in September 2007:

"I just want you to understand that instincts are just as important as love. Instincts are just as important as intelligence. Instincts are just as important as spirituality. In the end, they all work together, and to me, that is the experience of being complete. To have the ability to be instinctually, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually connected.
Dogs can give you access to that -- animals can give you access to that -- but they must be balanced. The balance is what gives you the connection. An unstable dog will not trigger that. You can pray all day long, and a dog will not become balanced. You actually have to do the exercise and practice the discipline in order for him to become balanced, because he is part of Mother Nature. You can’t just wish for something. You must act on it. If you want a balanced dog, you have to practice what creates the balance.
And you have to listen to your dog when he says, this human is unstable. Absolutely, I don’t go to a meeting without Daddy present. He’s my instincts; he’s my guidance. If he fights, flights, or avoids you, we’re not doing business. He’s that honest. To me, a dog represents honesty, integrity, and loyalty…which are sometimes hard to find in humans!" - Cesar Millan

New Study: Boys Let Girls Win

She's the Boss

A new study in the news at The Discovery Channel reveals what some dachshund and dog owners have known all along: in puppy play, it's ladies first. Even if the male has a physical advantage, young male dogs playing with female dogs will often let the female win. Here's an excerpt: Male dogs sometimes place themselves in potentially disadvantageous positions that could make them more vulnerable to attack, and researchers suspect the opportunity to play may be more important to them than winning.
"We found that self-handicapping tends to occur in conjunction with play bows," lead author Camille Ward told Discovery News.
"A play bow is a signal that dogs use when they want to communicate playful intentions to a potential play partner," added Ward, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan and director of About Dogs LLC. She is also author of the forthcoming book, 'Relationship-Based Dog Training.'
While males were less likely to initiate play with other males, they seemed eager to play with females, and would go to all sorts of lengths to keep the play going.
They might lose the game in the short run, but they could win at love in the future.
