Lola Finds Her Forever Home!

Pitched puppy adopted: fox10tv.com

Lola

We're sure that you remember the story of 'Lola,' the puppy who was thrown over a third-story balcony a few weeks ago.  Well, great news:  she has recovered and has found a new forever home!  Our roving reporters 'Teenie' and 'Bowser' write:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

We just wanted to send you this update on Lola, the dachshund puppy from Alabama that was thrown from a third floor balcony. She's doing great and getting new parents! Here's a link to her story:  Lola, puppy thrown from balcony, has a new home.  It's always nice to hear a happy ending. Love to read your blog.

Sweet Dachshund Puppy Thrown Out A Third Floor Balcony: She's A Miracle Baby

Look at that face

Good gosh.  We hate ending our week at The Long and Short of it All with such a sad story, but alas - we don't write the Dachshund news, we just report it.  Meet beautiful little 9-week-old 'Lola,' who hails from Mobile, Alabama.  She was thrown from a balcony of  a third-floor apartment on Tuesday, and is seen here just yesterday - still in very serious condition at South Alabama Spay & Neuter Center.  Excerpt from al.com:

The small dog appeared weak, only standing for several seconds, but responding to kisses and other shows of affection.
“She’s not out of the woods yet. She definitely a miracle,” said Dr. Jeni Knizley who is treating Lola. “She has had the most wonderful attitude. Even when we were trying to hook up a catheter, she would look up at us and wag her tail. That kind of love and devotion, (it) is heartbreaking when you see it. She had a strong will to be here and is a really sweet, sweet precious baby.”
Kendria Dexter, the puppy’s owner, was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. She was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail about 6:14 p.m. Wednesday and was released about 8 p.m. with bail set at $1,000, records show.
“I did not have good expectations for the dog,” Knizley said. “I would probably have given her a 10 to 15 percent chance of making it.”
The puppy “was in very, very critical condition when she arrived,” Knizley said, adding that Lola had trouble breathing, couldn’t stand, and “was in a coma-type state.” The impact caused internal injuries including liver damage, she said.
“She is eating, but not keeping much down,” she said.
“I can’t say she’s out of the woods yet, but I can say she miraculously not a single broken bone, probably due to her age.” Knizley said.

We're sending warm Dachshund wishes Lola's way for a full and quick recovery.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Arthur!

Thanks so much to Emma Macpherson for sending in such a beautiful photo of her new beloved Dachshund puppy 'Arthur!'  Will you look at those eyes?  She writes:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

I love your blog and just wanted to share this photo of our Tan & Black Miniature Dachshund Arthur, he's 8 weeks old. He loves playing outside and chewing leaves! :)

My partner Andrew and I used to have a black and tan mini, Ziggy, however he passed away from a very rare Mycobacterium infection in December of 2010.

Miniature Dachshunds are the best dogs in the world to me and I am so excited to be embarking upon a loving friendship with one all over again.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

Dachshund Lover Elizabeth Taylor Passes

We're so sad to report the passing of Dachshund Lover Elizabeth Taylor, who died today at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital. She was a legend of the likes we will never see again.
Her son Michael Wilding stated:  "My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love," he said. "Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts."  Source.

Those Special Dachshunds Holiday Edition: Meet Otto Von Bismarck!

To say that we are enamoured with these photos would be an understatement - what a handsome guy 'Otto' is! Thanks so much to his humans Andy and Sarah Murrell for writing in:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

My wife Sarah and I are long time lurkers on your blog. We've had our little guy Otto Von Bismarck (yes, the conqueror of Germany) now for three years (born December 3rd, 2007).

Back when he was a year old, we decided to take some pictures of him for our Christmas cards. These are his one year old Christmas photos.

Last year, we didn't do a picture, so we decided to up the ante a bit this year with this photo. We decided that Otto should be the next revision of an internet meme, specifically the three wolf moon meme.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Otto as a puppy

May Otto's three wolf moon photo make him irresistible to the ladies, strike fear into other males, and offer him a lifetime of good health!

So Much Pun

While browsing the net for the morning Dachshund News, we found a familiar face on So Much Pun!  They ponder:  The Real Question Is, Which Is Cuter?  Joey was enamoured with his friend 'Frankie' at the local Dachshund meetup that day back in 2008.

Future Dachshund Lovers of America

Meet 11-year-old Hunter Miller, and his handsome red shaded longhair 'Rex,' who hail from Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Hunter just turned 11, and instead of having a big birthday bash at his home on Saturday, he wanted to have it at the local humane society, with donations for the shelter instead of presents!  He sent out over 80 invitations and invited over 400 of his facebook friends to donate in honor of his birthday.  Excerpt from the Southeast Missourian:

Miller and his mother help out at the Humane Society almost every Saturday by playing with the animals, taking them for walks, cleaning out pens and taking out trash.
Miller has two dogs, one of which was adopted from the Humane Society about a year ago, and a cat at home. He also takes care of several stray cats at his father's farm in Advance, Missouri.
"Whenever you feel bad, they make you feel better," Miller said about his pets. "Even if they don't like what you are doing, they love you forever."

The Sheridan Avenue Boys

(click photo to enlarge)

'Jack,' 'Jetson,' 'Jordan,' and 'Lincoln' are known as The Sheridan Avenue Boys. Handsome, handsome, handsome, and handsome.  What a great Halloweenie they must have had.  We actually met 'Jack' earlier this year, in a fantastic video called 'Jack Talking To His Pillow.'  Rememeber that one?  Thanks so much to their mom for sending in this awesome photo, and keep up with the boys at their blog.

The Teckel Itself is Stubborn and Idiosyncratic

The teckel itself is stubborn and idiosyncratic? Blasphemy! Must be a bad google translation from this German text: "Der Teckel an sich ist stur und eigenwillig." Source.

Smoking Hot Dachshunds

We can't stop thinking about yesterday's post with 'General Edi,' the dachshund with a half pack of cigarettes a day habit. Thanks for the great comments, especially what P.J. wrote: But it also points out how all the precautions--and worrying--in the world on the part of us dachshund owners can be for nothing in the end. He was TWENTY-TWO years old, the canine equivalent of a heavy smoker, and what did him in? Being hit by a car!!! It reminds me of the (supposedly true) news item about a health nut who died as a result of choking on a handful of vitamins and dietary supplements.

Yep, LOVE is the most important thing in a dachshund's life. Thanks to our pal 'Sampson' for sending in this funny photo. (Original source unknown)

Have a great Friday!

Dachshund Lovers Support Animal Birth Control

Singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton is the latest celebrity dachshund lover to join PETA in their ABC (Animal Birth Control) campaign. Looks like her dachshund, 'Lord Victor,' is proud of his mom for helping to get the word out about the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Vanessa has this to say about her good buddy Victor: Lord Victor is an extremely handsome little man. Though he is quite humble, he definitely has a mesmerizing effect on the ladies. He is a professional cuddler and world traveler. He's overjoyed when we stumble upon a rare twig on the city sidewalks. He loves to gather these sticks and bring them home, where he then proceeds to chew them up and inevitably regurgitate them. Another pastime that we both enjoy is making cocktails. When he hears the clank of ice cubes, he rushes over to the freezer. I give him a cube, and he proudly prances over to his bed, where he revels in the crunchy goodness.

Dachshunds Celebrate New Years in the News

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Elizabeth Taylor

Who? Oh, Please! Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, DBE (born 27 February 1932) is a two-time Academy Award-winning English American actress. Known for her acting skills and beauty, as well as her Hollywood lifestyle including many marriages, she is considered one of the great actresses of Hollywood’s golden years, as well as a larger-than-life celebrity.
The American Film Institute named Taylor seventh among the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.
Now, we don't know for sure that this is Elizabeth's red sable long-hair dachshund in the above photo. We can certainly hope though, as the pup seems to be pretty familiar with her. There's a rumour floating around on the internet that she acquired an entire litter of dachshunds which she later bestowed as a gift upon her then-husband Richard Burton, when the two completed filming the movie "Cleopatra."
Find out more about Elizabeth Taylor on wikipedia, or anywhere really.

As an aside, it's our birthday today. We're seven years old! We were almost born on Christmas. Time sure does fly.

Dachshunds Teleconferencing with their Dads in Iraq in the News

What a special holiday treat for little red 'Sable' and her family. This is a photo of Master Gunnery Sgt.-select Kenneth Reynolds in Al Asad, Iraq, on a teleconference with his wife, Teresa, and dachshund Sable. Excerpt from The Los Angeles Times: Teresa Reynolds, daughter Kelsea, son Tyler and their miniature dachshund Sable settled into chairs Saturday morning at the San Diego Supercomputer Center for an early Christmas present.
A satellite connection was established, and soon Marine Master Gunnery Sgt.-select Kenneth Reynolds was on the screen from the air base at Al Asad, Iraq, as part of a program to keep military families in touch with deployed loved ones through teleconferencing.
There was laughter, a few tears, some jokes about shipping Sable to Iraq in a Christmas stocking, and then some inquiries from Dad about how Kelsea, 16, and Tyler, 12, were doing in school.
Finally the joking and asking of questions fell away."I miss you," Kenneth Reynolds, a noncommissioned officer in charge of a crew of air controllers, said quietly."
I miss you, too, sweetheart," his wife said.

Top 10 Reasons Your Dachshund Deserves to be on Your Christmas Gift List

#10. He’s seen you naked, but still respects you. Honestly, how many people can you say that about? Seriously. Your dog sees you at your worst, pre-shower, pre-makeup, pre-everything that makes you look presentable, and still looks at you like a deity. Or at least, keeps the chuckles to a minimum.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Vanessa Carlton's 'Nolita Fairytale'

Enjoy Vanessa Carlton's new video for her single 'Nolita Fairytale' from her new album 'Heroes and Thieves.' Her pretty red long-hair (sable?) dachshund 'Victor' makes his big debut! The second video is a clip with producer Irv Gotti, a live version of the song, and a better look at Victor. Thanks to Veronica A. for the tip!
