Wieners Let It All Hang Out In Montreal

Thanks to 'Fidgit' from Snug Harbor, Rhode Island, for sending in a link to the events which took place in Montreal on Saturday at the 6th Annual Montreal Wienerfest!  Proceeds of this year's event went to several pet rescue foundations and charities, including Helping Homeless Pets and Tiny Paws Dog Rescue Canada.  Video via CBC News.

Congratulations to 10-year-old 'Cody,' who hails from Loveland, Colorado for taking first prize in the costume contest hosted by Dog Owner's General Store yesterday.  Via The Reporter Herald:

Wearing a T-shirt and cap that would make most dogs squirm, Cody strutted in front of the judges with a box carrying faux hot dogs on his back pushed by a stuffed monkey in a costume that played on his breed's nickname, "wiener dog."
Human Ken Ferguson has been dressing Cody in Halloween costumes for about seven years and said he always manages to think of something unique and different. It can be both fun and rewarding -- Cody took home a D.O.G.S. gift card on Sunday, and in past Halloween costume contests he has won a Wii game set (he lets his family use it, too).

Gearing Up For Halloween

Over 2,500 spectators cheered on over 400 costumed canines on Saturday for the 22nd Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Parade in New York City.  More than $8,000 was raised by the sponsor, Friends of First Run, to benefit the city’s largest and oldest dog run. A Note From World Famous Dachshund Rosco P. Dog

Hello Joey and Rowdy,

I hope all is well going into our favorite month Dachtober.

Our local Chamber of Commerce has an Oktoberfest featuring three Dachshund events, a costume contest, a look-a-like contest, and a best trick contest. The local news channel NBC 41 Action news invited myself and two of my Dachshund buddies to come to the station and show off our costumes.

I am the handsome doggie on the right in the dapper tux. I went as 00Dachshund, secret agent dog, with a license to bark. My daddy even got labeled a Bond Girl to my James Bond outfit (he is not quite sure how to take that yet). My two buddies went as a pirate and a penguin.

Back On The Chain Gang

You Know It's A New Year When The Dachshunds Come Out In Key West

Dian Story holds Molly the "New Year's Eve Party Animal."

As sure as that big ball will drop in New York City, the Dachshunds will parade in Key West, Florida on New Year's Eve.  And that's what happened yesterday as some 227 Dachshunds strolled through Key West's historic Old Town for the 7th Annual Event.  Many long dogs donned costumes:  one was dressed as a Green Bay Packers cheerleader, another "newshound" wore a video camera, a "horse" carried a cowboy doll on its back and one came dressed as a bright green iguana complete with a 3-foot-long tail.

Thanks so much to our pretty little friend 'Olga' for writing in with a common problem a lot of us Dachshunds have to deal with this time of year:  The Dress Up.  Ugh.  She writes:

Dear Joey and Rowdy:

I just wanted to say Happy Holidays and that I love your blog. I’m assuming that your human doesn’t put you through the torture of dress up and photo shoots for holiday cards. My mom was insistent that I dress up in front of the tree this year. In a way I didn’t mind because I got lots of treats in the process, but it was still a bit of a pain. I’ve attached a photo from the shoot. It would have turned out better if my mom had better lighting and a better camera that wasn’t so sensitive to my every little move! Maybe next year we can do without the costume…

Why Dachshunds Hate Halloween

Here's hoping that everyone had a fun and safe Halloweenie!  We're hoping that you got lots of extra treats for all the torture your humans put you through - we know we did!  Above, thanks so much to Erin Wooldridge for sending in the fun photo.  She writes:

Hello Joey and Maggie!

I just came across your blog and wanted to share a cute picture of my wiener dog Peanut!! It's silly how much we love these little dogs! He tried very hard to eat his Halloween wig. Happy halloween!

In our own neck of the woods, we attended the 6th Annual Halloweenie Gala which was put on by Chicago Dachshund Lovers, a local meetup group.  King Tut, seen here, won the grand People's Choice Award! 

Our pal 'Autumn' took home first place in the "scariest category" as The Bride of Frankenstein!  Her hair was just too much!

And while we didn't win anything this year, we think that we should have scooped the "cutest category."  But we're a bit biased.  We had a great time though!

International Dachshund Torture Week

Don't get us wrong - we LOVE Dachtober, but the Halloween costumes - not so much.  Frito, seen here in a video by doxzens4ever, isn't so happy either. 
We can only imagine what our Dad has in store for us.  How 'bout you guys?

Get A Long Little Doggie

8-year-old 'Willy' carried a Cowboy doll on a saddle Saturday at the 3rd Annual Dachshund Stampede at St. Luke Episcopal Church in La Union, New Mexico, just west of Canutillo, Texas. Gift bags were given to the first, second and third place winners. The first Dachshund races started at the church five years ago when the dogs ran through enclosed chutes, said Rev. Jeff Lambert. The dogs now run in an open field with their handlers. Willy was an attention-getting spectator rather than a racer at the event.
