Snow Angel

Well, at least some of the dachshunds out there are enjoying the snow and weather we're having this year! This is longhair 'Spencer,' who hails from Ohio. His human, April S. writes: He LOVES to roll in the snow. He also loves to be dragged on most any surface -- snow, ice, grass, dirt, concrete....

Thanks for sending in the hilarious photos!

(Looks like someone doesn't want to go back in the house!)

It's The First Day of Winter

Hold on to your hats! At least the days are getting longer - and that means more time to lay in the glorious sun that flows through the windows.

Dachshund News Roundup!

Proving once again that dachshunds are taking over the world, here's a bonus roundup of wiener dog news from all over the continent! Above, red longhair therapy dox 'Bobbi' comforts Attawapiskat evacuees, who were forced to leave their northern Ontario, Canada homes because of flood threats. Any worries the children might have had about being so far from home seemed to disappear as they hugged, held and walked the dogs at the University of Waterloo, where evacuees are staying. Source.

It's Garden Time! Red smooth 'Kisses' rides herd over five other dogs who trail after visitors and shoppers at the Still Meadows Farm, outside of Charleston, West Virginia. The 65-acre working farm also operates greenhouses and has a gift shop. One greenhouse features a stand of homegrown herbs. Source.
Smiling at center stage, John Hine, 4, holds up his 7-week-old red smooth dachshund 'Oscar' so the judges can get a good look during the cutest pet contest at the fourth annual Parade Your Pet event, held Saturday in downtown Midland, Michigan. Source.

Finally...when is that warm weather coming? Red longhair 'Duchess' checks out the late-season snow in Lakewood, Colorado this week. Parts of Colarado got up to a foot of snow in a late season storm. Source.

"Hot Dogs - Chicago Style" Bark in the Park

Huh? Your hosts, Joey and Maggie, joined a team of wiener dogs and friends: Hot Dogs - Chicago Style, to raise money from their family, friends, and co-workers to support Chicago's Anti-Cruelty Society in a 5K walk along Chicago's lakefront on Saturday. The team of dachshunds and friends raised over $18,000 for the organization, which was founded in 1899, is completely donor supported, and helps over 25,000 animals a year. There were over 3,000 dogs participating at the 14th annual Bark in the Park event. Woof! See more pics at Chicago Dachshund Lovers.

It's Cold in Texas Too

Meet 'Phatso'
We like to talk about the weather. Maggie is hot in the summer with her long hair, and Joey is cold in the winter with his smooth coat. We're hot, cold, hot, cold, we can never make up our minds.
It's exactly zero degrees in Chicago right now, so we aren't feeling so sorry for our friend, black and tan smooth 'Phatso' in Corpus Christi, Texas, where temperatures are expected to soar to 50 degrees today. Regardless, it's cold at night, and Phatso sure looked fabulous in his fashionable sweater yesterday morning.

Dachshunds Ready for Winter Weather in the News

Meet pretty red smooth 'Lucy.' She's the coverdoxie for a story about pets and winter weather by The Daily Statesman out of Dexter, Missouri. Lucy's ready for the cold and snow with her warm, yet fashionable outerwear. Here's an excerpt from the article: They are our best friends. They are always happy to see us no matter how long we've been gone and no matter what mood we are in.
Being equipped with a fur coat doesn't ensure the safety of your pet during the winter season.
Smaller dogs like Chihuahuas and Dachshunds have a higher metabolism than their larger counterparts. That means that they burn energy quickly and aren't able to maintain their own body temperatures in the cold. And without a lot of hair to help insulate them, they can succumb to the affects of the cold quickly.
"They don't tolerate the cold well at all," said Stoddard County Veterinarian Dr. Kyle Ouzts. "When you have to take a little dog out during the cold, it's better to buy a sweater or jacket for them to wear while they are out … and remember to bring them in sooner.
"Don't leave them out as long."
Read the rest of this article at The Daily Statesman. There are some great winter tips. Woof!

Dachshunds Love Hockey

The Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors are hosting another popular dog day afternoon this Sunday in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. This is a pic from last year's event where little black and tan smooth 'Brittany' got to meet her hero IceDog Stefan Legein. Check out that coy smile on Brittany's face. There will be a contest for the best dressed dog in Majors gear, and the doggies get to run around on the ice during intermission. Find out more at The Mississauga News.

Dachshunds Get Wet in the News

Hundreds of dachshunds and friends descended on Danville, Illinois on Saturday for the 11th Annual Midwest Dachshund Festival. It rained and rained and rained. Your 'Long and Short of it All' hosts, Joey and Maggie, can attest to the downpour, the first time it rained at the event in 11 years. All things considered, the doxies still had a great time. Photos courtesy Chicago Dachshund Lovers. Excerpt from Commercial-News: Hundreds of little legs ran as fast as they could Saturday as a drizzle turned into a downpour at Lincoln Park.
The annual Midwest Dachshund Festival moved into the park’s pavilion, but many of the pint-sized participants and their parents packed up and headed for home.
The annual event seeks to publicize the plight of abandoned dachsies. Previously called Dachsiefest and held at Kickapoo State Park until this year, more than 300 dogs and their owners were expected to attend. But as with any outdoor event, weather plays an important role. This year, Mother Nature cut the festivities short, as short as the little dogs’ legs.
Neil Cortus served as the event’s emcee. He said as soon as the lightning started, he had to shut down all his electrical equipment and cover it up.
“It’s been a tough one today,” Cortus said, as he and his wife loaded their nine dachshunds and all their supplies into their camper.
“Once the weather got really bad, we moved into the pavilion. We still had a few events, and the people who stayed had fun.”
Those events included contests for: the farthest travel to the festival — dog and owner from Washington state; most dachsies brought to the event — 13; oldest dog — 20-years-old; and everyone’s favorite, the costume parade.
Although Jill Blasdel-Cortus, president and founder of Dachshund Rescue of North America, felt disappointed that the weather interfered with the event her group sponsored, she and her husband Neil remained optimistic.
“We spoke with the mayor (Scott Eisenhauer) right before things got really bad,” Neil Cortus said. “He said he’ll help us find an indoor venue for next year.” Read the rest.

Dachshunds, Agility, and Junior Showmanship in the News

'Flirt,' a long-haired miniature black and tan dachshund, tugs on her leash in the arms of her owner, Lindsey Pabst, after placing first at the Kenai Kennel Club's dog agility trial Sunday in Alaska. At 13-years-old Lindsey was the youngest handler, running the agility course with the smallest dog at the trial. Way to go Flirt and Lindsey! Excerpt from the Peninsula Clarion: Lindsey Pabst is no stranger to the world of dog agility. After watching her mother train dogs ever since she could remember, it probably isn't surprising for those who know her to find 13-year-old Lindsey standing in line with Flirt, her 5-year-old long-haired miniature dachshund, at the Kenai Kennel Club agility trial Sunday awaiting her chance to take on the jumps and weaves. "My goal is to run really fast to get her moving and keep her happy, excited and motivated," Lindsey said. "Sometimes she's off and doesn't want to do anything."
Lindsey was 8 when she met Flirt, and started training her when the dog was 6 months old. At her first trial, Lindsey's goal was to just have fun, but after approximately three years of trials, Lindsey hopes Flirt will get a title in the jumping course and the standard course which includes all the obstacles before the event is over. Read the rest.
