Dachshunds In Film: The Lemon Drop Kid

A cold Bob Hope steals Fifi's sweater

If you're looking to watch a classic Christmas movie this year, one with say, oh, a Dachshund in it, look no further than The Lemon Drop Kid starring none other than Bob Hope, and introducing the world to a song none other than Silver Bells.  That's right.  'Shelby,' 'Hope', and 'Scooby' write:

Dear Rowdy and Bette,

Tis the season to be watching Christmas movies! We watched "The Lemon Drop Kid" with Bob Hope the other night and to our mutual amazement there is a very funny scene with a long-haired wiener dog in it!  Perhaps you already know about this, but it took us by a nice surprise! The voice-over did not sound very like a Dachshund barking but we'll excuse them this considering how sweet a film it is.

If you want to check out the Dachshund scene, and we know you do, click on this youtube link, we've got it all queued up to start at the very best part.

Big ol' film-hound rescue 'Scooby' is the newest member of his pack.  Ain't he a handsome boy?  Congrats to his family!

Christmas Fun in the Sun Down Under

'Mason' and 'Kai' picked up their fashionable holiday attire at their local K-Mart.

Dozens of Dachshunds recently got together to enjoy the warm weather and celebrate Christmas Down Under at the annual Dachshunds in Paradise holiday meet-up in the Gold Coast, Australia.  Dachshunds in Paradise is a local meet-up group which "gathers to celebrate their petite pups and to raise money to help find homes for neglected dachshunds."

Wiener Dog Champions

Congratulations to little 'Gracie,' who took the grand prize at her local Dachshund Dash this last weekend near Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Way to go!  She ran her heart out in honor of long-time Long and Short of it All reader and older sister 'Piper,' who left this earth last Wednesday.  Our hearts go out to Gracie and her family.

Dachshunds Balancing Ducks

Via Ishai Sagi:   Sesame and Chickpea do not like a bath, so we make it fun for them by giving them rubber ducks to balance on their heads.

WOOHOO!  We're having a great time now!

Hope your Monday is just as super.

Awkward Family Dachshund Photos

Thanks to an Anonymous Dachshundist for sending this in via the Huffington Post:

Engagement photos are known for being posed and -- if we're being completely honest here -- kind of awkward.
But one Connecticut couple, Magdalena Niziol and Peter DeLong, decided to embrace that fact in their pre-wedding portrait -- complete with ugly sweaters, 80s-style scrunchies and some apathetic-looking pets.

Remembering Maggie

Maggie at about 12-weeks-old

Two years ago today, we lost our beloved 'Maggie,' your original Long and Short of it All hostess.  They say that time heals all wounds, and to some extent, that is true.  We no longer feel so much pain and sorrow when we run across old photos of this special little girl, but we still miss her very much.
Now when we think of her, we feel her warmth and goodness and the joy that she brought to us and so many people every day of her wonderful life.  We'll never forget you little girl.
Please take some time today to remember all the little ones in your lives who have gone on to a better place before you.  Appreciate the little ones who are with you now with some extra treats and belly rubs - they are on this earth for such a short time - it's really not fair.

Viral Dachshund Videos: Mini Dachshund Bath Time

We fail to understand why some videos go viral when others don't.  It seems to us like there are so many more quality videos, like the ones we post here on The Long and Short of it All, that deserve a little more recognition.
This is cute and all, don't get us wrong, but all the Dachshund lovers all over the world cringe a little when they see the little guys jumping so high into the slippery tub.

Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals 2013

While on our little break this summer, we missed this year's pawsome promo for the 2013 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals at the Los Alamitos Race Course in Los Alamitos, California.  This video ROCKS.  Better late than never, as they say.  Hope everyone had a great time.  And turn up the volume.

Dachshund Vs Golden Retriever

A Golden Wiener?  A Wiener Retriever?

This photo is making a splash on the net - it was originally posted on Reddit a few days ago under the title "This is what you get when you cross a Dachshund and a golden retriever."  Some 1300(!) comments later, it was posted to MSN where they noted:

You've got to wonder how this happened: "You've got a lot of confidence for a dog your size. I like that," a golden retriever said flirtatiously to a dachshund. "Well, today's your lucky day, because I've got a thing for tall blondes," the dachshund replied with a roguish wink. After a few dates in the park, a coy game of tug and war, the love of a lifetime blossomed between the fetching couple, and along came this guy, a gorgeous golden retriever-dachshund mix. You don't see this kind of dog very often, but we sort of want one. He makes us believe all those romantic comedies about how opposites attract.

What do you think this doggie is?  An English Cream?  An odd but pretty red longhair?  A red longhair mix?  Or is he/she really a Dachshund/Golden Retriever mix?

Dachumercial Fail: "Dachshund Dog Breed Info"

Expectations of a riveting and knowledgeable Dachumercial are low when they misspell Dachshund in the opening title. Sigh.  New video by Pet360.

A Note From Rowdy and Bette: The Summer of Love

We just wanted to pop in and let you know that yes, we ARE still alive and all is fine at The World Headquarters of 'The Long and Short of it All.'  We've appreciated all the notes and comments with concerns about our absence.
It's the Summer of Love, 2013.  Good Lord.  We've never experienced a doggie in heat in our entire lives, and hopefully, we'll never experience it again.  We'll spare you all the sordid details. but suffice to say that your busy new hostess 'Bette' most definitely did NOT like the little undergarments Dad tried to get her to wear.  She spun herself in circles trying to get it off until she nearly passed out.
All the neighborhood dogs are lining up on the sidewalk outside the fence, but Bette has both eyes set on our neighbor, 'Martini,' a tall handsome 11year-old chocolate smooth pharaoh hound-lab mix who lives next door.  And your host 'Rowdy' is simply beside himself over the rejection.
We're waiting on Bette's spay until she's more fully grown.  It seems you don't want to spay or neuter too early, and definitely not too late -  it's a fine line - but we're going to wait until she's at least 12 months old or so for the procedure.
We tend to think that many dogs are getting spayed and neutered too early these days - and sometimes with good reason, but please be sure and make an informed decision with your vet if you're in a similar predicament.  Here's an awesome recent study to investigate.... https://www.avma.org/News/JAVMANews/Pages/130401s.aspx

All of this of course leads us to this new video by youtuber y cozican - featuring what many consider to be the hottest song of the summer.  Turn up the volume and have a great Monday!  You know you want it.

'The Long and Short of it All' Turns Six Years Old

Your hosts 'Bette' and 'Rowdy'

It's not the most exciting Dachshund news in the world at the moment - nothing you should go and shout from the mountaintops - but 'The Long and Short of it All' turns a whopping 6-years-old today!  That's an eternity in the world of the world wide web.
We just got back from an extended vacation, and we're still catching up with everything that has happened while we've been off sunning ourselves.  Thanks for all the emails and comments about some pretty exciting Dachshund news events that occurred while we were away.  We'll get to those later this week.  In the meantime, it's our anniversary - so we're gonna relax and work on our tummy tans just one more day.  We gotta look hot for speedo and bikini season.

This concludes post number 3,147.

Wieners Wieners Everywhere

It's Friday, and it's time to sing!  Via NYU Local:  Wiener dogs stormed Washington Square in New York last Saturday for the Spring Fiesta of the Dachshund Friendship Festival. The gathering let the little guys run with dogs of their own size; and with numbers came power. So many dachshunds played around the fountain that Shakespeare in the Square’s Taming of the Shrew couldn’t actually go on in the park. The performance was moved to NYU Stern’s Gould Plaza. But hey, we’ll take wagging wieners over Tischies any time. The climax of the day’s event involved everyone lifting their wieners in the air to sing the Dachsong.  Go ahead.  Click that link and sing!

Are you singing yet?
