The World's Oldest Dog, Continued

Meet 'Chanel,' a "wire-hair dachshund," who, at 20-years-old, is stated to be the oldest dog in the world. When last we saw "Chanel" in our post The World's Oldest Dog?, we deduced that her picture was a fraud, and actually that of our flickr friend 'Honey.' We believe this new photo above to be Chanel, we just aren't so sure that she's the oldest dog in the world. That said, we hope WE live to be at least 20! Rock on Chanel. Read all about her and see lots of pics at The Sun.

Chanel to Lose Title As Oldest Living Dog in the World?

Well, we thought this might happen, that 21-year-old wire-haired Dachshund-mix 'Chanel' is not really the oldest dog in the world, but the good news is that her new competition, 25.5-year-old Max, looks to us like he may have a coveted Dachshund gene in his terrier mix. Max hails from New Iberia, Louisiana. We'll let you know how it all pans out. Read more at Eyewitness News 10.

Happy 20th Birthday Heidi!

Now we meet 'Heidi,' a beautiful red smooth who hails just south of St. Louis, Missouri, who celebrated her 20th birthday on January 12th.  Happy Birthday Heidi!  Via STL Today:

Twenty years ago, Greg Navarro was looking for a dog.
He picked a cute little dachshund puppy and named her Heidi.
"I got her when she was six weeks old," said Navarro, a South County resident.
But she isn't the lively young pup she used to be.
"She has to warm up, like a car," Greg Navarro said. "But once she gets up she can move around."
She sleeps 18 hours a day, her coat has gone gray and she can't handle steps anymore, but Heidi still loves one thing.
"Food," Cathy Navarro said. "She's a great eater. If we didn't limit what she ate, she'd always eat more."
Last year, when Heidi turned 19, Cathy Navarro contacted the Guinness Book of World Records to see where her dachshund stood.
"They told me to contact them when she turned 20," Cathy Navarro said. "So last week I e-mailed them and submitted her information."
Wherever she ranks, the Navarro's are just glad to have her.
"Every day with Heidi is a blessing," Cathy Navarro said.

Jane and fritz at war

Woof, WOOF!  To say that we are impressed would be an understatement - these are fantastic!  Oscar Schultz of Virginia Beach, Virginia writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

My human is John Schultz and he's sent in pictures of me before.

John is a photographer and loves to recreate "Retro-Era" drawings, photos, and paintings with his photography.

He searhed high and low for JUST the right HUMAN to put in the Fritz and Jane pictures and finally he found one!

I barked and barked until he sent these to you! I had a great time with Chanel (the human model) but my favorite thing was the white fur rug she was laying on. I've since claimed it as MINE! I love being warm!

My human and I encourage you to keep up with your BLOG - we check it every day!

Where IS my ball anyway?! I think my human hides it..........

Sincerely,
John and Oscar Schultz

The World's Oldest Dog?

The World Records Academy is claiming that 'Chanel,' seen in this photograph, a blonde wire-haired dachshund from Port Jefferson Station, NY, born May 8, 1988, is the oldest dog in the world. Believe it? Your Long and Short of it All hosts tend not to. We've met 20-year-old dachshunds at dachshund meetups. One of our dad's co-workers' 24-year-old dog died last year, so dogs older than 20 can't be that uncommon, right? The dog at this link turned 29 last year.

Besides, that's not even a wire-haired dachshund, that's an English Cream.....puppy. As a matter of fact, we'd recognize that dog anywhere, that's our good pal 'Honey,' the pretty girl whose human is prolific photographer DoxieOne over at flickr.

Here's the original flickr photo. Make sure to check out more photos of Honey over in her flickr set.

This of course begs the question, who's the oldest dog you've ever met? Ever owned a dachshund to be 20 or older? What was your secret to longevity?

Westminster 2010: One, Two, Three, and the Dachshunds are OUT

Congratulations to the Whippet, 2-year-old Ch Starline's 'Chanel,' for taking the Hound Group at the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  It looked as though wirehair Dachshund Ch Gleneagle's Who's Famous Now had a great chance at taking the spot after making the initial cut and being THE crowd favorite, but ultimately the crown went to the Whippet, followed by the Greyhound, Scottish Deerhound bitch Ch. Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, and the seven-year-old Australian-imported PBGV dog Ch. Rokeena Carte Blanche.

Just wait 'til next year!

Westminster 2010 continues through today:

NIGHT 2:
Tuesday, February 16
Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups, Best In Show
8-11 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network

Breed judging highlight videos are available throughout the day on the Westminster Web site.

Haute Dogs

There's only been snow on the ground for a few days in Chicago, and we're so tired of it already. Boots don't fit our fat stubby paws, and the Musher's Secret doesn't always help prevent the sting of that salt on the sidewalk. Joey has no hair on his belly and chest....it's so cold! It's dachshund torture!
Take us to Florida, we need a spa. Take us to Lap of Luxury with Karen!
Lap of Luxury with Karen in Delray Beach, Florida, offers full-service spa grooming to top-of-the-line, exceptional items your dachshunds expect. Owner Karen Grossman owned Karen's for People + Pets in New York City for about 30 years. The best part is that her 5 long-haired dachshunds are usually wandering around greeting the customers and clients.
South Florida Sun-Sentinel had a look: If ever there was a pampered pet store fit for the likes of Paris Hilton, this is it. You can find everything from mosaic inlaid pet beds to Australian crystal collars and designer duds for doggie. What also makes this store stand out is the glass-enclosed grooming salon, which allows clients to see how the poochies are being handled.
The pet furniture is elegant — with options such as the mosaic bed ($2,500) and chaises ($595-$795). But what really will blow you away is the selection of pet clothing with brand names such as For Pets Only from Italy and Ruff Ruff Couture. Expect to pay $225 for a cashmere sweater, $75 for a hoodie with a toy in the pocket and leather outfits with Chanel and Sgt. Pepper themes ($495-$550). And don't miss the crystal collars ($175-$450), bassinets in pink or blue ($150) and a huge selection of dog carriers, including a gold leather Chrombones with fringe ($1,100).

You must be joking. It looks like a Dachshund Oasis.

New York's Oldest Dog

With the recent passing of 'Chanel,' the Dachshund mix who was on record as the oldest dog in the world, dogs are coming out of the woodwork to claim the esteemed title, and it's amazing how many of them carry a Dachshund gene or two.
Meet 'Paco Sosa Fetes,' a handsome red smooth who hails from Manahattan, and is believed to be the oldest dog in New York. Paco turns 20 years old tomorrow, September 5th. May bones rain from the sky! Excerpt from Reuters:

Paco exercises regularly and eats organic poultry, fish and fruit; and in good
weather he can be seen in Central Park with his human companion, filmmaker and
venture capitalist Bernadine Santistevan. But Paco's healthy regimen isn't
the only factor in his longevity, according to Dr. Talia Goldberg of Park East
Animal Hospital, where Paco has been treated since 1990.
"A lot of it has to do with the care that Bernadine provides him.
Acupuncture, physical therapy, Eastern therapy -- she goes well beyond for
him." Thanks in large part to this comprehensive wellness program and to
Bernadine being "in tune" with her dog, "Paco is still with us and in pretty
good condition," said the New York veterinarian.

Read all about Paco in a great article at Reuters.

UPDATE: 9.6 - 7 AM: Meet Paco's human, Bernadine Santistevan, in an expanded article at the New York Daily News.
