What Did Josh Duhamel Say?
After Cesar Millan the Dog Whisperer stopped by to offer advice to Josh Duhamel and Fergie with their Dachshund 'Zoe', Josh reportedly proclaimed:
“He show’s up and I swear to God, this guy’s got special skills. Our dog normally barks like crazy every time someone comes to the house. He walks in and Zoe runs right up to him (and just looks at him). He just walks right in the house.
“She loves her ball, he bounces the ball, she tries to go get it and play (he commands her to stop) and she stops. And it’s really kind of amazing the powers that this man has. I mean I was actually becoming a little submissive myself.”

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Ashley Olsen
We spied Mary-Kate Olsen walking what appears to be the same Dachshund back in July of 2011, now it must be Ashley's turn. Via Celebrity Gossip:
Taking time out of busy schedule to give her pup some exercise, Ashley Olsen walked around the West Village in New York City on Saturday (February 2). The 26-year-old mogul had her hands full in a black overcoat, multicolored scarf, and black pants as she carried a couple of handbags, her coffee, and her little dachshund. Giving his stubby legs a break, she carried the pooch in his knit sweater for awhile.

Celebrity Dachshund Killed in Freak Revolving Door Accident
What a cutie
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Alan TBH Plumptre, aka 'Alan,' who had a day job at UK's Tatler magazine, which focuses on the glamorous lives and lifestyles of the upper class. Alan met his fate in a horrible revolving door accident at the magazine's office in central London. Via The Independent:
Staff at the high-society magazine Tatler are in mourning after their
in-house dachshund came to a grisly end, killed by the office revolving
doors.
Alan TBH Plumptre, a hound often ferried in the best designer handbags, was
doted on at the monthly publication and had gathered 2,500 followers to his own
Twitter account.
Eyewitnesses said that Alan’s last hour was spent outdoors, taking a walk
with a Tatler underling.
When the dog approached the revolving door at Vogue House, he saw a man walking through and bolted towards him.
Alan tried to rush through the revolving doors but got his neck caught. The male worker also became stuck in the door.
Two fire engines rushed to the plush Hanover Square offices, where onlookers crowded round the accident scene.
A team of ten firefighters freed the man. However they could not save Alan, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jennifer George, who owned the dog and is Editor’s assistant at Tatler, tweeted: “Yesterday my tiny much loved man Alan passed away in a tragic accident. Thank you to all that were there to help, all the kind wishes and all who followed @TatlerAlan.’”

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Orlando Cruz and Bam-Bam!
It seems that Dachshunds are always on the cusp of Popular Culture, and this isn't more evident than finding out that Puerto Rican professional boxer Orlando Cruz has a handsome red smooth of his own, who goes by the fantastic name of 'Bam-Bam!' Mr. Cruz made headlines this month by becoming the first boxer to come out as gay while still active professionally, stating that "I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man."
Well, he's also a proud Dachshund Lover. Thanks so much to our pal 'Jack' for sending in the link to this news and photo. He pens:
Dear Joey and Rowdy,
I thought you guys may be interested in this story in the British newspaper, The Guardian, that my Dad found about the boxer Orlando Cruz, which talks about, amongst other things, his Dachsie Bam-Bam.
Wags and licks,
Jack
The Guardian notes:
"I decided to be free," Orlando Cruz says with piercing clarity as he looks out across his home city of San Juan. The Puerto Rican fighter, who this month became the first boxer to declare publicly that he was gay, remains on the balcony of his condominium as a blue and humid sky darkens. Cruz ignores the drops of rain that glisten on his bare torso as he whistles to Bam-Bam, a cheerful sausage dog who jumps on to his lap. The 31-year-old then talks with increasing passion about his new-found liberty.
"They can call me maricón, or faggot," he says with a wry smile as he tickles Bam-Bam behind the ears, "and I don't care. Let them say it because they can't hurt me now. I am relaxed. I feel so happy. But to make this announcement to the whole world I had to be very strong."
Cruz flexes his tattooed arms while deflecting Bam-Bam's urge to lick his face. He might usually be besotted with his little dachshund but, now, Cruz is fiercely concentrated. On Friday night, in Kissimmee, Florida, he faces the most testing bout of his career, a WBO world featherweight title eliminator, but he needs first to explain the far harder struggle he has finally won over fear and prejudice.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Carol Lynley
Who? Carol Lynley (born February 13, 1942) is an American actress and former child model. She is seen here in this March 30th, 1957 International News Photo with a caption that read: SOME FUN! For relaxation, lovely Carol Lynley, 15, finds time to play with her pet dog, a Dachshund, between her many engagements as model, and show time. The talented lass is headed for stardom, 'tis said, by Broadwayites.
Ms. Lynley would go on to star in over 30 films including Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree, Bunny Lake is Missing, The Cardinal, Harlow, and the original The Poseidon Adventure, in which she performed the Oscar-winning song "The Morning After" (but her singing voice actually was that of studio singer, Rene Armand). She has also appeared in over 200 television programs.
Ms. Lynley had her own paper dolls fashioned after her and appeared in many teen magazines including one of our favorites, the January 1959 Calling All Girls.
Carol would also pose for Playboy magazine in March, 1965.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Will Joyce MacKenzie Give Up Her Black Velvet?
Who's a Handsome Boy?
Huh? Joyce MacKenzie (born October 13, 1929 in Redwood City, California) is an American actress who appeared in films and television from 1946 to 1961. She is best remembered for being the eleventh actress to portray Jane. She played the role opposite Lex Barker's Tarzan in 1953's Tarzan and the She-Devil.
And oh yeah, she was a Dachshund Lover - sort of. In this press photo and release from July 28, 1953, Ms. MacKenzie is struggling with giving up her Dachshund. How could you say 'Bye" to those eyes?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: A SWITCH ON "LOVE ME, LOVE MY DOG" -- HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA -- "BLACK VELVET" PET DACHSHUND OF ACTRESS JOYCE MACKENZIE PUTS ON HIS MOST APPEALING MANNERS HERE, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE POOCH IS ON THE LOSING END OF THE "LOVE ME, LOVE MY DOG" PROBLEM. MISS MACKENZIE, RECENT BRIDE OF SOCIALLY PROMINENT TIM LEIMERT IS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME FOR "VELVET" AFTER SHE DISCOVERED THE POOCH WOULD HAVE NO PART OF EITHER HER BRIDEGROOM OR THE BRIDEGROOM'S COCKER SPANIEL. SO IT'S A NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR VELVET.
Apparently Black Velvet had good reason to be suspicious, as the MacKenzie-Leimert marriage would last only a few years - proving once again that Dachshund knows best.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: This is Not Audrey Hepburn
UPDATE: See how internet rumors get started? An anonymous Dachshundist sent us this photo of what was claimed to be Audrey Hepburn, and we found the photo on several sites which also suggested that it was Audrey Hepburn. But a little research prompted by an anonymous commenter, which we should have done before we posted it, showed that, no, it is instead Coiffure, for Harper's Bazaar by photographer Lillian Bassman, who passed away earlier this year. Source: Artnet.
Regardless, it's a beautiful photo, and we're still going to sing-a-long with Moon River.
Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's
You've heard Moon River covered a thousand times, even by the likes of REM, but, endulge us, Morrissey covered it best.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Orson Welles
Who? Surely you must know. George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, writer and producer who worked extensively in theater, radio and film. He is best remembered for his innovative work in all three media, most notably Caesar (1937), a groundbreaking Broadway adaption of Julius Caesar and the debut of the Mercury Theatre; The War of the Worlds (1938), the most famous broadcast in the history of radio; and Citizen Kane (1941), which many critics and scholars name as the best film of all time.
So let's ask ourselves....was he also a Dachshund Lover? Of course he was. He is seen here with his third wife Italian actress Paola Mori, daughter Beatrice, and pretty little red longhair 'Columbina.' The Corbis photo notes:
12/27/57-Hoboken, New Jersey: Actor Orson Welles is shown on deck of the American export liner SS Exchorda with his wife, daughter Beatrice, 2, and toy long hair dachshund, Columbina, before sailing today. The actor originally had passage booked on the Liberte and was to have sailed this morning, but plans had to be changed at the last moment when it was learned that Columbina could not be admitted into France.
There was also an AP story which appeared in several newspapers around the county at the time which had more detail about the trip:
And finally, in The Six Degrees of Dachsaration, it should be noted that Mr. Welles' second wife was Dachshund Lover Rita Hayworth.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Josh Duhamel Teams Up With Petsmart Charities
Transformers star and husband of singer Fergie, Josh Duhamel, is on a campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption. He's blogging about it on Huffington Post, talking about it at People magazine, and even teaming up with Petsmart Charities as seen in the above video to get the word out. Mr. Duhamel talks open and candidly at People magazine about the love of his Dachshunds:
All it took was a little Meatloaf for Josh Duhamel to become a convert.
Six years ago, the actor and his wife Fergie were looking to provide a companion for their 1-year-old dachshund Zoe, so they searched online and found another dachshund through a rescue.
"Meatloaf was truly a beautiful dog," Duhamel tells PEOPLE of the aging dachshund he brought into his home. "He was the most lovable, appreciative, soulful little dude. He just turned out to be such a great pet, such a great friend, and ever since then I've been an advocate of rescuing."
True to his word, Duhamel has partnered with PetSmart Charities' High-Five for Pet Adoption campaign, which celebrates the five million pets that have been adopted at PetSmart Adoption Centers since 1994.
Still, many millions more need homes. "I wanted to make aware how much of a problem it is in this country," he says. "I can speak from experience: [adopting] was the smartest thing we've done when it comes to owning a pet."
Rescue hadn't been on Duhamel's radar when he brought home Zoe while working on the NBC drama Las Vegas – and a disappointed colleague took it upon herself to educate the actor.
"When she found out that we bought Zoe, she gave me an earful, and that's when I first heard about pet adoption," Duhamel says. "Ever since then, I tell anybody who's going to get a pet that that's the way to go, not just because it's the right thing to do but because they make incredible pets."
Meatloaf was one of them. "From the very beginning, Zoe was taken well care of," Duhamel says. "We call her the spoiled little Brentwood dog because she never knew any hardship, unlike Meatloaf, who totally appreciated everything. He was just so loving and he was always so consistent." In his advancing age, the dachshund became afflicted by a degenerative brain disease and died on April 1 in his sleep.
"We have his ashes in a box," Duhamel says. "We were going to bury it and put a little memorial out, but we decided we wanted to keep it on the mantle at home because – I dunno, we just couldn't bury him for some reason. We just wanted to keep him close."
The shelter dogs that Duhamel has met since working with PetSmart Charities have also reminded him of Meatloaf. "They all seem to have that same characteristic of gratitude," he says. "I can only imagine what it's like in some of these shelters. When they do get a loving home, they truly appreciate it."

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Liv Ullmann
Oh, yes. Liv Ullmann is a Norwegian actress and film director, as well as one of the "muses" of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Nominated five times for a Best Actress Golden Globe, winning once for The Emigrants, Ullmann has also been nominated for the Palme d'Or, two times for the Academy Award, and two times for a BAFTA Film Award. She is the inspiration for Steven Tyler's daughter's Liv's name, and oh yeah, she's a Dachshund Lover. She recently talked with the Boston Globe about her pretty rescue Dachshund 'Chelsea':
A: Yes. Growing up, I had one fox terrier and one golden retriever.
Q: When and where did you adopt your dog?
A: We adopted her 2 years ago and we’re a little unsure of her age but we decided on 7. Sometimes I wish I was an animal because I've never ever seen such care of an animal in the world [by the MSPCA].
Q: What made you choose her?
A: [The MSPCA] knew that we had lost our dachshund some years ago and my husband [Boston developer Donald Saunders] didn’t want a new one but while I was away in Norway they did phone and said they had this incredible little dachshund and he should at least come and look at her.
Q: What happened to her before she came to live with you?
A: She had been with someone for five years and they just left a letter that she was born at a flea market. She was sick, of course. Her left leg was completely crooked. But then at (Angell Animal Medical Center), they did an operation on her... Now she has a perfect leg.
Q: What are three traits you love about Chelsea?
A: She loves to sit on the lap. She is so sweet. She is very people oriented.
Q: Why did you name her Chelsea?
A: She was called Chelsea to the people who delivered her. We didn't want to change that.

The sausage dog stays! I'll keep taking pet to the office, insists Minister who used staff microwave to warm dachshund's pillow
You go Mr.UK Energy Minister Greg Barker (huh?)! Yep, his office mates weren't so happy when he used the office microwave to warm up Otto's pillow-like warming pad, but he'll keep bringing the Dachshund to the office. Excerpt from The Daily Mail:
Conservative Mr Barker, a close friend of David Cameron, started taking 20-week-old Otto to his office because he thought he was too young to leave at home.
‘I bought the heat pad to go under his mat,’ he said. ‘It helps Otto nod off to sleep.
'Unfortunately, I forgot to heat it up at home so I popped it in the microwave when I got to the office, which I shouldn’t have done.
'There was a complaint and I have said sorry.’
Mr Barker says his dog is enormously helpful in getting meetings with foreign dignitaries off to a smooth start.
Mr Barker decided to buy a dachshund after a conversation with Italian-born socialite Carla Powell, wife of Margaret Thatcher’s former adviser Charles Powell. ‘I got talking to her on an official trip to Rome. She is crazy about dachshunds.’
Aren't we all? Read more about Otto and Mr. Barker at The Daily Mail.

Capitals’ defenseman Karl Alzner’s dogs had way more fun Wednesday night than he did
Thanks to the many folks who wrote in about this hilarious story. You guys sure do make reporting the Dachshund News easier! 'Rosco P. Dog' from Lee's Summit Missouri sends in:
Dear Joey and Rowdy,
My master Rick and I were cruising the internet and ran into this article on Yahoo! It is another glaring example of a poor innocent Dachshund who witnessed a horrible act of vandalism. Thank-Goodness the Dachshund and his buddy were ok. Via Yahoo Sports:
Imagine being Washington Capitals' defenseman Karl Alzner Wednesday night. Imagine, say, that you played 37:14, over 11 minutes more than your previous career-high, in a 2-1 triple-overtime loss to the New York Rangers -- that you were one of the players in a game that beat pretty much everyone to a bloody pulp and took 114:41 to decide, nearly twice as long as it was supposed to.
Worse, imagine that, just after you pressured Dan Girardi along the far boards, he swung the puck behind the goal to Brad Richards, who centered to Marian Gaborik for the game-winner at 14:41, and all you could do was slam your stick against the glass and head to the room as they celebrated.
Then imagine that, six hours after puck drop, you arrived at home, sore as all hell, thinking about all the things that could have gone your way but didn't. And then you opened your door to this nonsense.
Alzner tweeted the following photo at 1:57 a.m. EST Thursday morning, captioned with the words, "Dogs not happy about the loss either."
Thanks again to our Newshound Rosco for sending in the link. He's seen here "working for his treats." How handsome is he?
Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman Karl Alzner poses with his Dachshunds 'Murphy' and 'Charlie' for the 2012 Capitals Canine Calendar.
As an aside, we feel Mr. Alzner's pain. Our own 'Rowdy,' aka Harry Houdini, escaped his crate while Dad was at work a few weeks ago. So much for Dad's favorite shoes.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Jennifer Lawrence Locked in Basement With Dachshunds
Thanks so much to our friend Clara and her boy 'Oscar' from Portugal for writing in about actress Jennifer Lawrence's appearance on Tuesday's David Letterman. Ms. Lawrence is poised to hit super-stardom with today's release of the movie Hunger Games. Or maybe she's poised to hit super-stardom because of this story of her, her brothers, and their three Dachshunds. The whole interview is entertaining, but the Dachshund bits start at about 7 minutes in. Watch it quick before "the man" takes it down. Via People magazine:
The actress, who stars in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the dystopian teen trilogy about a televised battle to the death, told David Letterman on the Late Show that her two older brothers roughhoused with her growing up.
"I've got scars all over my body," she said. "The best part – they would fight each other over who could fight me."
There was one ritual in particular that was especially agonizing. "When I was doing the gymnastics phase, they used to pin my feet back behind my head – I can't do this anymore – and then they would get our dachshunds and put peanut butter all over my face," she explained. "We had three dachshunds and then the dogs would do this [go crazy licking]. And then they'd shut the door, lock me in the basement with dachshunds."
"And now – karma! – I go on talk shows and tell everybody," she added. "I win!"
Letterman, who feigned a therapy session throughout the interview, said, "I'm going to make two calls, Jennifer. The first one will be to Amnesty International, and the second one will be to Dick Cheney. I think we have something here. It might replace water boarding, that little dachshund deal."
