Wirehair Wednesday: RAT Edition!

It's Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and you're tuned in to www.dachshundlove.blogspot.com and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  And boy do we have a good one for you this week:  it's the RAT EDITION!  There was a similar story and video last fall, Dachshunds On Rat Patrol in NYC, but this time it's been picked up by the Associated Press.  Good Dogs!

NEW YORK—Bodies tensed and noses twitching, the dogs sniff the hunting ground before them: a lower Manhattan alley, grimy, dim and perfect for rats. With a terse command — “Now!” — the chase is on.
Circling, bounding over and pawing at a mound of garbage bags, the dogs quickly have rodents on the run.
“Come on ... I mean, ‘tally ho!’ says one of their owners, Susan Friedenberg. In a whirl of barks, pants and wagging tails, dogs tunnel among the bags and bolt down the alley as their quarry tries to scurry away.
On a couple of recent nights, an eclectic group of ratters converged on an alley near City Hall about an hour after sunset. The lineups included two border terriers; a wire-haired dachshund; a Jack Russell terrier/Australian cattle dog mix; a Patterdale terrier, an intense, no-nonsense breed that’s uncommon in this country; and a feist, a type of dog developed in the American South to tree squirrels.   Read more at The Star.

26 Hours In The Drainpipe

There was Dachshund Drama in Berlin on Tuesday when 'Oscar' and 'Emmy' went for a walk only to disappear in a drainage pipe.  Oscar came back out after an hour and a half, but the award goes to 11-year-old Emmy, seen here, for getting stuck for the next 26 hours.  Her owners feared it was all over for her, as she is on heart medication twice a day, and her whimpers were getting weaker as time dragged on.  Thankfully some fine water company workers were able to free her at last.  Via Bild.de

Saying Goodbye To Bubba, A Dachshund Legend

Thanks so very much to our pals 'Sophie' and 'Oliver' for writing in of the passing of a true Dachshund Legend:  'Bubba' the Mole Hunting Dachshund, who hailed from Fremont, Nebraska. They write:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

This was on the front page of our Fremont Tribune today.  We know you've featured this mole-hunting wizard before and would like to know that he has passed on at the age of 13.

Awww...., our hearts sure go out to Bubba's family and friends.  Here's an excerpt from the article:

If moles had the ability to understand the news, they might be breathing a collective sigh of relief.
But this is a sad time for Fremonters Dale and Betty Reandeau and others who loved Bubba.
The Reandeaus’ miniature dachshund — estimated to have rid Ridge Cemetery of more than 600 moles throughout the years — died Saturday. He was 13.
The little dog had been ill before his death. Bubba had Cushing’s disease and pancreatitis, Dale Reandeau said.
Bubba’s mole-hunting efforts had diminished in recent times.
“He got 16 this year and then he just quit,” Reandeau said. “He didn’t want to go to the cemetery any more. He didn’t want to walk. All he wanted to do was eat, lie on the couch and sleep.”
Bubba’s mole-hunting endeavors began years ago while the Reandeaus took him on walks in the cemetery. Before that, moles were a headache for then-cemetery sexton Jim Clarke.
Almost like a second career, Bubba became a lean, mean mole-hunting machine.
“He’d walked there (in the cemetery) almost forever and then all of a sudden, that was his job — to get those moles,” Clarke said. “He could hear them. They’d be 100 feet away and he’d go get them. He did a big service for us. He kept those moles under control for a lot of years.”
Clarke estimates the dog killed about 100 moles a year and Bubba became a celebrity of sorts. The Reandeaus got comments from people in other parts of the state after The Associated Press picked up a Fremont Tribune story about the dog.
“Bubba became even more beloved by Fremont citizens, because he was part of the cemetery historical tours. His owners would bring him and tell his story,” said Cherrie Clarke, cemetery historian.
The Reandeaus will miss their pet. Dale, 80, doesn’t know if they’ll get another. At first, Betty said “no more dogs.” He’s hoping she’ll reconsider.
“Maybe next spring we’ll get another dog. I hope so,” he said.
In the meantime, the Reandeaus and others are remembering the perky pup.
“He was a wonderful dog,” Reandeau said. “I don’t know that we’ll get another one like him.”

Rest in Peace little guy.  Read more of this story at the Fremont Tribune.

Dachshund Takes Hounds At Westminster 2012 But Pekingese Grabs BIS

Dachshund Perfection:  Cinders

Maybe we need to go on vacation this time of year a little more often if superstition will give us Dachshunds a winner of the hounds and a chance at Best In Show while we're away.  It was like a wonderful dream to hear that Raydachs Playing With Fire V Gleishorbach SW - aka 'Cinders' - took the hounds at this year's Westminster.  Cinders is the top-ranked wirehaired Dachshund in the United States after all.
It was a nightmare of a dream to hear that Cinders lost Best in Show to a Pekingese though - really - a Pekingese?  Your 'Long and Short of it All' host 'Rowdy' took one look at the fluffy guy 'Malachy' and wondered if he had a squeaker inside and if he needed to be "de-squeaked."  Was that really even a dog?
Regardless, we can still celebrate Cinders' big win.  The Corpus Christi Caller had the scoop:

Shirley Ray, one of the owners of Grand Champion Raydachs Playing With Fire V Gleishorbach SW “Cinders,” said judges told her Cinders is the first female wire-haired dachshund to win the hound group at Westminster. Maria and James Sakoda also are listed as owners.
Ray said she named Cinders “Playing with Fire” because she almost died at 8 days old when her mother got milk fever. Ray had to bottle-feed Cinders and the other puppies. Still, that hasn’t affected the champion’s spirits.
“She’s also known as the dachshund that never stops wagging her tail,” Ray said.
Ray has been showing dachshunds for 18 years, but she’s never had a dog win the hound category. In 2003, she came close when her dog was ranked in third place.

We're sure that you saw the vids from the big event, but just in case:

Dachshunds To Watch Out For: His Name Is Cooper

Breeder-judge Diane McCormick presents Cooper Award of Merit and Select at DCA Host Show 2011

Grand Champion Lockshire Detour to Sanlyn, aka 'Cooper,' has been invited to the 2012 Westminster Dog Show which will air live next Monday and Tuesday - check you local listings.   We'll be rooting for this handsome dynamo - all 27 pounds of him.  Excerpt from the Enumclaw Courier Herald out of Oregon:

Cooper enjoys the limelight, so when he and Kathy Lockyer step onto the green carpet at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Monday in Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City, the 4-year-old wirehair standard dachshund should be a hit.
“He is just a wonderful ambassador for the breed,” Lockyer said of her mustached, long-bodied dynamo. “He likes people and people like him. I like to see the smiles when they see his face.”
Cooper will compete with 21 other wirehair standard dachshund entries, one of the largest groups at the prestigious show and part of the hound category.
"To go to Westminster; to be seen at Westminster; to get invited to Westminster is a big deal because you don’t get invited very often,” said Lockyer, who pointed out the top in the breeds are invited and then there’s a drawing.
“Stepping out on the green – it’s just a privilege to be there,” she said.

Meet Harry Potter: The Boy That Lived

Thanks so much to Amy Ryan for writing in with the wonderful tale of a little wire-haired Dachshund puppy who met life with many struggles, but is doing great now thanks to the love that he found.  Meet Harry Potter:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

I stumbled across your blog while trying to decide if our rescue puppy is a wire-hair and thought you should hear his story..
A good friend was adopting a Pomeranian from our local animal shelter in October, when they let a pregnant rat terrier into the shelter play yard.  I was enchanted by this sweet dog, she seemed like a happy dog.  We usually have 2 or 3 dogs, but are down to one terrier, Maggie, due to our other dogs passing from old age.
I asked the deputy at the shelter about adopting her, and was told that she was going to be euthanized that week, after her stray hold was lifted.  It is a state-run shelter and they cannot adopt out any dogs that are not spayed.  Due to her pregnancy, she could not be spayed, and she wasn't due for three more weeks.  They did not have the room to keep her that long.
I was horrified, and asked the deputy if any rescues could help.  During the week, the deputy, Heather, found a rescue that would allow us to foster her and the pups, we could keep the mom, and relinquish the pups to the rescue when they were 8 weeks old, so we took her home and named her Sadie.
5 days later, she gave birth to 2 puppies in my 13-year old son's bed while he slept.  he awoke to his alarm for school, to find two cleaned newborn puppies under his blankets by his feet.  Guess she was due a little sooner that the shelter thought.  I called the rescue to inform them that the pups had been born.
The rescue called me back a few hours later, to let me know they had a litter of 3 dachshund pups that were orphaned by their mother 5 days prior.  They wanted to know if they could bring them over to see if Sadie would take them as her own.  Of course, we said yes, and they brought the 3 very weak orphans to our home.
One died at my home that evening, and one died the next day.  The bottle feeding had not left them strong enough to make it, but one little guy was strong enough to nurse on his own, and Sadie took him with no problem.
Cut to 5 weeks later.  We could definitely tell Sadie's bio-pups were pomeranians, and the orphan was growing longer, not taller.  We decided to name him Harry Potter, because he was an orphan, and he is the "boy that lived", as in the books.
We have now fallen madly and deeply in love with this puppy.  I have adopted so many pets, and was prepared to find a home for this pup, because we now have two dogs and two cats.  My husband, who has NEVER complained about the animals I adopt, begged me to keep this little guy, so I relented, and now we are the proud owners of what we think is a wire-hair Dachshund.
Here is his picture, as we aren't sure he is a doxie.  His body is for sure, but his face is a mystery.
I thought you might be enchanted by the story of the boy that lived!

Wirehair Wednesday: Tracking Deer With City Boy Zeus!

Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you still can't track deer in your spare time - and this handsome wirehaired boy named 'Zeus' is a perfect example.  Zeus lives in a condominium in downtown Columbus, Ohio, with his human Patrick McCaffrey Jr., a busy lawyer.  But they love to spend their free time helping fellow hunters find their wounded game - for free!  Excerpt from The Columbus Dispatch:

He shares a name with a Greek god, but — with his short legs, big nose and hairy back — is easily underestimated.
“Most people laugh when they see him — until he gets out in the woods,” said McCaffrey, an outdoorsman, 51, who spends more time these days helping fellow hunters than bringing down game himself.
“He gets a whiff of blood, and he’s a wolf. The blood tells him there’s an animal out there that he needs to hunt down.”
This time of year, Zeus is the cat’s meow for dozens of hunters who have shot a deer but can’t close the deal.
Zeus finds the deer about 30 percent of the time — sometimes dead, sometimes alive, McCaffrey said.
The dog’s small stature proves to be an asset: His nose stays close to the ground, and he is easier to control on a leash — which the state requires for tracking dogs.

Read more about Zeus and his adventures, and see another photo at The Columbus Dispatch.

Wine Country Wiener Fest

Hey, it's Wirehair Wednesday, and this is stunning 2-year-old 'Fritz,'
whose human is Pam Carson of Temecula, California

The season sure is heating up for Dachshund events.  The Temecula Valley Dachshund Club held its second annual Wine Country Wiener Fest on Sunday at Longshadow Ranch in Temecula, California.  The event included family-friendly games, local vendors, raffles, silent auctions, wine tasting, and "Dexter's Derby" Dachshund Races w/Kentucky Derby-style Extravagant Hat Contest.  Excerpt from inlandsocal:

There were prizes for contests that included the longest dachshund, which came in at 42" and the best kisser, canine, of course.
Riverside's Sunny Oasis Dachshund Rescue and Friends brought six rescued dachshunds, all of which found new homes. In addition the TVDC named Sunny Oasis as a recipient of the fundraiser proceeds as well as Almost Home Dachshund Rescue.
Swift running doxies competed in several heats and categories, including puppies and mixed breed dogs.

Mr. Superteckel Henry & Friends

Ooooh - it's Wirehair Wednesday, and this week we're traveling all the way to the Motherland to visit 'Henry,' aka Mr. Superteckel, a young black and tan pup, and his pals 'Mona' and 'Linus.'  Now, it looks like 'Mona' doesn't have much time to devote to a young pup like Henry and his mischief, but 'Linus' sure enjoys his company.  By youtuber Mr. Super Teckel

Wirehair Wednesday

It's been a while since we've had a Wirehair Wednesday, and they have been sorely missed.  Thanks so much to Mary Baker for sending in such a nice image.  She writes:

Dear Joey & Maggie,

I wanted to share a photo of my very sweet & special bearded lady with you all. Her name is Lonnie and she just turned one year old. Attached is a picture of her with her daddy, Brewer, attempting to sleep in on Mother's Day 2010. (Mommy was up and busy sneaking pictures of them!)

Wirehair Wednesday

Why are the Wirehaired Dachshunds referred to as the "clowns" of the breed? This newer video might shed a little light on the subject. By youtuber Cooniecrew who notes (loosely translated):  Laughter allowed! Our three dogs, Axel, Angie and Burgi continue to make fun.

The Modern Wirehair

It's Wednesday.  There's Wirehairs everywhere.  That can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  Thanks so much to our pal 'Michael-dog' for sending in the link to Dutch photographer Maarten Wetsema's website where there are several Dachshunds featured in unlikely yet highly agreeable poses under the links "Dogs in their Domestic Environment" and "Portraits of Dogs."  This photo is titled Lodewijk, 2007.

The Vintage Wirehair
