Historic Dachshund Olympic Heroes
Almost four years ago today here at The Long and Short of it All, we met handsome 'Fred' as he prepared for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Were you with us then? This has remained one of our most favorite videos over the years - the underwater shots are still amazing to watch. Fred is an inspiration to Dachshunds everywhere. Bring on 2012!

Psychic German Sausage Dog Predicts Bayern FC Win
Good Gosh, we LOVE the mustache. What is it with Germans and their psychic animals? First it was Paul the Octopus who correctly picked world cup winning results, now it is a German sausage dog called 'Sissi' who has nosed out a prediction that Bayern Munich would win last weekend's Champion league final against Chelsea. Video by IBTimesUK.
But better luck next time, Sissi: Chelsea's British defender John Terry celebrates the Chelsea win with teammates after the UEFA Champions League final football match between FC Bayern Muenchen and Chelsea FC on May 19, 2012 at the Fussball Arena stadium in Munich.

Capitals’ defenseman Karl Alzner’s dogs had way more fun Wednesday night than he did
Thanks to the many folks who wrote in about this hilarious story. You guys sure do make reporting the Dachshund News easier! 'Rosco P. Dog' from Lee's Summit Missouri sends in:
Dear Joey and Rowdy,
My master Rick and I were cruising the internet and ran into this article on Yahoo! It is another glaring example of a poor innocent Dachshund who witnessed a horrible act of vandalism. Thank-Goodness the Dachshund and his buddy were ok. Via Yahoo Sports:
Imagine being Washington Capitals' defenseman Karl Alzner Wednesday night. Imagine, say, that you played 37:14, over 11 minutes more than your previous career-high, in a 2-1 triple-overtime loss to the New York Rangers -- that you were one of the players in a game that beat pretty much everyone to a bloody pulp and took 114:41 to decide, nearly twice as long as it was supposed to.
Worse, imagine that, just after you pressured Dan Girardi along the far boards, he swung the puck behind the goal to Brad Richards, who centered to Marian Gaborik for the game-winner at 14:41, and all you could do was slam your stick against the glass and head to the room as they celebrated.
Then imagine that, six hours after puck drop, you arrived at home, sore as all hell, thinking about all the things that could have gone your way but didn't. And then you opened your door to this nonsense.
Alzner tweeted the following photo at 1:57 a.m. EST Thursday morning, captioned with the words, "Dogs not happy about the loss either."
Thanks again to our Newshound Rosco for sending in the link. He's seen here "working for his treats." How handsome is he?

As an aside, we feel Mr. Alzner's pain. Our own 'Rowdy,' aka Harry Houdini, escaped his crate while Dad was at work a few weeks ago. So much for Dad's favorite shoes.

Sign This Speedster Up
Good luck catching this contestant in the annual wiener dog race during halftime of Sunday's Seahawks-Ravens game (November 13) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Baltimore could have used the lil' fella, as the Ravens stumbled to a 22-17 loss.

The Flyball Stylings of Ralphie the Doxie
Thanks so much to Doug Tricarico for sending in this hilarious video - boy did we laugh and laugh! He writes:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
I've made a couple videos featured Dachshunds over the years you might like. Despite the fact that I made it, and years ago at that, this Ralphie one never fails to crack me up.
If you enjoy flyball, and you haven't seen the Dachshund Dream Team video featuring our local friends Peaches and Piper, don't miss it!

Dancing With A Low Rider
Dachshund Freestyle Alert! We think that cute little 'Prana' and her mom does a pretty good job here, but the video description notes: Not the best we could do by far and I am prett y bummed about that but my own stagefright (everybody who knows me can tell you I am very shy :D) and the lack of training due to being extremely busy has left it's mark.
Bark On, Prana.

World Cup Dachshunds
Italy? Really? Dachshunds wear their hearts on their sleeves at the 2010 Woofstock, which took place in Toronto, Canada, over the weekend. Blog Toronto took a look at all the canines supporting their favorite teams at the event, and had this to say about the Wiener Dogs: I found it odd to see two Dachshunds, Lucy and Luke, dressed in Italian soccer jerseys. Perhaps their owners would rather have German wiener dogs pretending to be Italian than to own two Italian Greyhounds.
Meanwhile, wirehair 'Migo,' who hails from Denmark, sends out his own tribute to the World Cup in this fun new video by hsmultimedia.
We know where our allegiances stand: The Motherland. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

Dachshund News Roundup!
Proving once again that Dachtober may be over, but it's never too late to dress your Dachshund in costume, here's a Dachshund News Roundup on a seasonably cool, yet thankfully dry autumn day, Monday, November 16, 2009. Can we get a woof?! Above, 'Marcello,' a 5-year-old black and tan smooth who hails from warm Miami Beach, Florida, won best costume at the second annual Paws in the Park fundraiser on November 8 in Miami. Over $15,000 was raised to benefit Friends Forever Rescue. Way to go! Read more and see lots of pics at The Miami Herald.
Kisses! In Dachshund show dog news, 81 Dachshunds competed yesterday for Best of Breed at the 28th Annual Dachshund Fanciers Association of Berks County in Bern Township, Pennsylvania. Above, Carol Johnson of Flourtown, gets a kiss from handsome red longhair 'Rory' during the show. Congrats goes out to 'Briardach's Rock Star,' also known as 'Jagger' for taking Best of Breed. Read all about it at The Reading Eagle.
In Dachshund healthcare news, smooth brindle 'Dezi Howell' receives therapeutic laser treatment after her spay at at Caring Hands Veterinary Hospital in Billings, Montana. Although the procedure is still considered alternative, research is showing that rarely do animal patients have inflammation or infection in the incision after the treatment. Read all about it and some other new veterinary technologies at The Independent Record.
In Dachshund rescue news, this handsome senior black and tan smooth was found tied to a bench in a park with his Red Heeler-mix sister last Monday. A nearby Fred Meyer store employee found a note in an elevator which asked the finder to rescue her two dogs. He has been given the name 'Guy' at a nearby shelter. Read more at The Curry Pilot.
And finally, in Dachshund sporting news, meet 'Bruce,' a red smooth on a mission at Saturday's master earthdog trials in Woodland, California. The event, sponsored by The Border Terrier Club of the Redwoods, featured dogs from all over the state showing off their tunneling skills.
Mike Delikowski of Modesto spent much of his time calling after his dachshund, Bruce, who went off exploring.
"Bruce, I've got the rat," he shouted, to no avail.

Ding Ding The Fishing Dachshund!

"I often swim in Donghu Lake, and used to leave him on the bank to take care of my clothes and valuables. But he couldn't stop jumping into the water and swimming with me," his human, Mr. Lin, said.
"When he was swimming, he would bite anything floating in the water, like bottles, foam rubber, or dead fish, and bring them back to the bank.
"But several days ago he suddenly started catching live fish from the lake. Within 10 minutes he had brought back three big fish, weighing more than 3kg."

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Oscar!

(click any photo to enlarge)
This will start your week off right, check out this handsome guy! Yep, this black and tan smooth's name is 'Oscar,' and he's got a new ball.....a great big ball that's just perfect for a playful boy like Oscar. His human, John E. Schultz, of the Navy Inactive Fleet Headquarters out of Portsmouth, Virginia, writes:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
I'm owned by Oscar. He's a 4.5 year old black and tan short hair mini. He's been with our family for just over 4 years now. He came to us from a friend when he was a puppy.
To say that he's high strung is a bit of an understatement. I've been reading online about this WONDERFUL breed and somewhere somebody said that they have an odd attraction to balls. Well Oscar is proof of that. He eats every single toy we give to him. We got him a professional football - he made short work of that (only a day). Then a professional basketball. That was more difficult - but in two days it was ripped apart completely.
My son and I were at the thrift store yesterday just looking around and I saw this huge 36" exercise ball. I thought, "That would be GREAT for Oscar!"
Oscar went through the normal 'daddy's here' tail wagging as I got out of the truck - but when he saw the ball he went absolutely NUTS. I mean CRAZED LIKE I'D NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE! We put the ball down in the livingroom and he chased it around the entire first floor of the house for an hour - barking 'crazily' the entire time. Eventually we put the ball away for fear he'd have a little wiener heart attack or something from the excitement. He calmed down.
I then thought it would be cool to get some pictures of. So I gathered up my kids and took him outside with the ball. Now Oscar usually sprints to the tree where the squirrels are - but his BALL was in sight.
I've attached a number of images from yesterday's ball antics for you to peruse.
After about 15 minutes - he was foaming at the mouth so we took him in the back yard and put the ball in the pool. We thought he'd jump right in - but he didn't. He doesn't go into the pool often at all. My son put him in to cool him down - and the beast that usually swims JUST enough to get to the steps and get out - swam to the ball to push it around the pool! We had to get in the pool to take him out - and when we did he just stood on the side of the pool barking at us to get the ball for him.
Needless to say Oscar slept well last night - flittering and dreaming of his new HUGE 36" chew-toy!
Sincerely,
Oscar, John Sr., Jessica, and John Jr.

Mascots That Matter

Hi Joey and Maggie,
I saw on the Internet that Frankfort High School in Frankfort, Indiana has a rather interesting mascot. They are the Hot Dogs! The mascot was listed as part of an article of the 31 most interesting high school mascots. The Fighting Hot Dogs are number 22. My dachshund Huey Long is a big fan of your site and insisted I pass along the information. I have attached a picture of him.
Looks like handsome 'Huey' has his own mascot!
From the Frankfort Senior High School website:
The mascot for the Frankfort Senior High School is original and unique. The Frankfort Hotdogs, it's a name that isn't exactly terrifying. But it's not the size of the dog that counts, rather it's the fight it has in it. You better believe the Frankfort Hotdogs have lots of fight.
Don't we know it.
