Hiking The Appalachian Trail With Your Dachshund
What a great way to spend some quality time with your Dachshund! Meet Crystal Stroud, 26, and her smooth 3-year-old girl 'Polly,' who hail from Mississippi. They are seen here getting some supplies in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, as they hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine this summer.
Tuesday marked the 75th anniversary of the completion of the trail, which runs 2,180 miles across 14 states from Springer Mountain Georgia to Katahdin, Maine. Excerpt from the Associated Press:
Outside Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters in Harpers Ferry, Mississippi native Crystal Stroud, 26, opened boxes of supplies shipped by friends and family – nail clippers and dog food for her trail buddy, a 3-year-old Dachshund named Polly, and wipes, trail mix and a loaf of homemade lemon poppyseed bread for herself. Many rural post offices dot the landscape along the trail, so hikers often ship things to those post offices to pick up as they progress on their journeys.
Stroud is hiking north after graduating from Mississippi State University and is craving adventure.
“I did not want to get chained down to a job,” she said. “I feel like a bird out of a cage out here. I hike as far as I want to hike. I stop when I want to stop. I get to sleep in if I want to.”
Stroud didn’t realize what she was getting into. She thought she’d camp and hike for a few weeks. At best, she figured, she’d be ready to quit after she saw Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains.
But she kept walking.
“I can’t explain it,” she said. “Life on the trail is amazing. I feel like a kid again, and I don’t ever want to leave.”

Retro Dachshund Fun: Multiple Masters
Rosie, the 1-year-old Dachshund, canine pride of the Bellet family, 6495 76th Terr N. is put through her paces, by multiple masters, (from left) Tom, Steve, Dorothy, and Robert Bellet. The game is similar to four squares, but the pup seems more concerned that her mouth is too small to grasp the bouncing ball.

Why Do Dachshunds Prefer HDTV?
Watching TV by flickrer Neil Gavigan
Humans can't wait to get their hands on the latest television technology, and now it appears that dogs like it too, at least as far as High Definition Television is concerned. Discover magazine has an Inner Life of Dogs article in their July/August issue and mention dogs and HDTV:
Most dogs show little interest in the average television set because of their visual abilities. In its simplest form, a motion seen on the TV screen is just a changing pattern of flight across the retina in our eye. The average person cannot see any flickering above 55 cycles per second (55Hz). But beagles see flicker rates up to 75 Hz - about 50 percent faster than human rates - suggesting dogs perceive motion better than people do. Television images flicker at about 60 Hz. Since that is above a human's flicker resolution ability of 55 Hz, the image appears continuous to us and blends smoothly together. Since dogs can resolve flickers at 75 Hz, images on a TV screen probably appear less real and less worthy of attention. However, since high-resolution digital screens are refreshed at a much higher rate, reports are increasingly surfacing of pooches who become very interested in newer technology HDTVs when a nature show contains images of animals moving.

The Shortest Hobo
We can't think of a better way to celebrate our return from hiatus and to kick off your Monday than with this heart-warming video by youtuber Brigabbianna. They note: A Dachshund parody of a Canadian TV show called The Littlest Hobo starring a german shepherd that was Canada's tougher version of Lassy. This was filmed on a beautiful spring day in Creston, B.C. starring our 10 year old Dachshund named Fernandez, aka BooBoo.

Dachshund Relaxation: Tater Ventures For Foreign Shores
Thanks so much to Derek Prowse for sending in this video of his beloved 'Tater' enjoying the sand and surf. He writes: Tater and I live on the west end of Panama City Beach, Florida, and in this video, we kayaked over to Camp Helen State Park on a lovely calm day on the gulf. When we got there, he found some buried treasure (a dead seabird), rolled in it, and went along his way back home for some serious napping.

More Summer Fun: Blue Water Dachshund
Our friend 'Geneva' is one lucky dog. From getting to ride around on backhoes to celebrating her 15th birthday at the beach on Cape Cod, this girl does it all. She writes:
Hi Joey and Maggie,
Speaking of "summer fun" my favorite thing to do on a hot day is go for a ride in the kayak. I start whimpering as soon as I see the equipment come out. I always stand right in the bow, to help with navigation. The life jacket can get a little hot, but Mom always says "safety first!"
Enjoy those strawberries, Joey!

Chester and Gretel are sure having fun here at the Spruce Railroad Trail on the shores of Lake Crescent, about 20 miles west of Port Angeles, Washington.
