Dachshund Mix 'Otto' Claims World's Oldest Dog Title

With the passing of Dachshund mix 'Chanel' at 21, the oldest dog on record according to Guinness World Records, senior canines from around the world have been clamoring for the top spot as the world's oldest dog.  Congrats goes out to Dachshund mix 'Otto,' who hails from Shropshire, England, for taking the crown.  Otto will be 21 in February, and recently traveled to London to appear on a chat show and receive a certificate in his honor.  Read all about it at the Shropshire Star. 

90 Breeder Dogs Including Dachshunds Rescued in Oklahoma

Meet Cara Baxter, who along with her husband Alan, heads the Tri-County Humane Society out of their home in Tecumseh, Oklahoma.  On Monday, they rescued over 90 dogs, including several Dachshunds, from deplorable conditions from a breeder in Bethel Acres.  These dogs need good homes.  Read more at the article on NewsOK, which notes that Oklahoma is the second-largest — behind Missouri — exporter of dogs in the nation, and there are an estimated 2,000 puppy mills in the state.

Dachshund Stories in History: BAN IS PLACED ON THIS CLEVER HOUND

While conducting Dachshund research at a local university, we stumbled upon this fun old article, from The Chicago Defender, April 19, 1913:

Daschund (sic) Taught to Watch the Players During the Progress of Card Games.

Winsted, Conn - Friends of Eugene McCaskey have placed the "no admittance" bar on his daschund whenever he goes to their homes for an evening at cards, because the canine has been taught to watch the floor and seats about a table while a game is in progress.  Not only will he pick up a coin or card which finds its way to the floor and carry it to his master, but the daschund watches players who are in the habit of concealing a card between their legs or on a seat beneath their legs for future playing.
One of Mr. McCaskey's friends was bitten in the leg after concealing a card, hence the edict.  The dog has other sporting activities.  When his master goes fishing along the shore of a lake, he will grab up the pole when the bob disappears in the water and run along with it until the fish is on land.

Twenty-Five Dachshunds Delivered to Nebraska Dachshund Rescue

Nebraska Dachshund Rescue sure has their work cut out for them - 25 long dogs arrived in Omaha last night; they were surrendered from an Iowa breeder.  Excerpt from Action 3 News:

Julie Siebler is Vice President of Nebraska Dachshund Rescue. She opens her home to the dogs and the volunteers taking care of them.
Julie Siebler: "They have a definite smell about them from being kennelled for so long and just staying within a confined area. I don't know if they've ever been bathed."
But nothing beats the smell of freedom.

Daisy in the Wiener's Circle

Meet black and tan smooth 'Daisy,' and her human, Dylan Feickert, 9, of Sebring, Florida.  They took part in the wiener dog races at the Oktoberfest in Avon Park, Florida, on Saturday, beating out 32 other Dachshunds to take home the prize.  Way to go!  The Dachshunds were the biggest hit of the festival this year (of course!), which drew in over 4,000 people.  Read all about it at Highlands Today.

She's Not So Wicked

This Dachsund may be dressed as the wicked witch, but she's too cute to be scary.  She took part in the 5th annual Dog Day Masquerade in Times Square, New York, yesterday.  See photos from the event at the New York Daily News.

A Note from Joey and Maggie: The Pumpkin Patch

We sure had fun shopping for pumpkins in the city yesterday.  Joey had his eye on the prize to his right, but Maggie wasn't so interested - she'd rather just sit around and look pretty.

We had no idea what a llama was doing in the pumpkin patch, but he sure kept a very close eye on us.  We were too busy scrounging for dropped food used to feed the animals at the petting zoo to even notice him though.  As a matter of fact, we would have been happy to have been in a pen with all the goats if people were going to handfeed us that delicious "kibble" all day. So yummy! 

Back at home, you can see that ultimately we chose the pumpkin which was most Dachshund-like.  Because we love Dachshunds.

October 15, 2009 - For all you wonderful people out there who have been keeping up with, contributing to, and praying for Joanie's recovery, we have an update for you. We wish with all our hearts it could be a more positive update, but it simply isn't. Joanie is going to need all the contributions, healing rays and prayers you can possibly send her way. She is now in an even more dire fight for her life, but Fighting She Is.

And now for a little Friday Funny? 

This devout Christian couple felt it important to own an equally Christian pet.
So, they went shopping. At a kennel specializing in Christian dogs, they found a little black and tan smooth Dachshund they liked quite a lot. When they asked the dog to fetch the Bible, he did it in a flash. When they instructed him to look up Psalm 23, he complied equally fast, using his stubby paws with dexterity. They were impressed, purchased the animal, and went home, piously.
That night they had friends over. They were so proud of their new Dachshund and his skills, they called the dog and showed off a little. The friends were impressed, and asked whether the dog was able to do any of the usual dog tricks, as well.
This stopped the couple cold, as they hadn't thought about "normal" tricks.
Well, they said, "let's try this out." Once more they called the long dog, and they clearly pronounced the command, "Heel!"
Quick as a wink, the dog jumped up on the guest's lap, put his short paw on the man's forehead, closed his eyes in concentration, and bowed his head and began to pray.

The late Mrs. Astor and Dachshund 'Freddy'

In what may be a final footnote to the glamorous life of New York socialite, civic leader, philanthropist, and Dachshund Lover Brooke Astor, her son, 85-year-old Anthony Marshall has been found guilty of defrauding his mother, and is looking at 25 years in prison.  His trial, which started in March of this year, was riddled with ice cold personal attacks towards all parties involved, from Mr. Marshall, and even to Mrs. Astor, in attempts to discredit her faculties.  Mrs. Astor's recent Dachshunds, 'Boysie' and 'Girlsie,' were referenced often in the trial in regards to how she was caring for them, how Marshall perceived them, as well as several off-the-cuff remarks about them which are a little too tawdry to repeat here. Expect an appeal on the judgment.

Reunion With Leroy, The Dachshund Who Apparently Walked 80 Miles in Search of his Home

In a follow-up to the story immediately below this, red smooth 'Leroy' is now safely home with his family near Richmond, Virginia.  Leroy is seen here with his human Robert Williams who stated "It's like any father looking at a child they haven't seen in a long time. All you want to do is hold him in your arms and kiss him and hug him and that's what I did."

Missing Dachshund Apparently Walks 80 Miles in Search of his Home

Red smooth 'Leroy,' who hails from Richmond, Virginia, was on a camping trip in Advance, North Carolina, when he went missing some 2 months ago.  Some good samaritans found him in the bushes at their church in Hillsborough, NC, - some 80 miles away from where he went missing - nursed him back to health, and found his humans via Craigslist.  Wow!  Stories like this sure reinforce your faith in mankind.  Read more at abc13.com.

California Woman Unhappy After Dachshund Adoption Denied

Ashley Inglis of Bakersfield, California, saw a dachshund she wanted to adopt last week at the local SPCA shelter, but she was given bad news. "It was being saved for Wednesday," she said. Wednesday also happens to be the day the SPCA holds its annual adoption event. 
We're hoping she can bring home her new friend today, but after taking the issue to the local news station, it's anybody's guess.  Find out more at Bakersfield Now.
There's one thing we've learned over the years with rescue groups and shelters - it's that they do the hard work, and they make the rules.  Often times potential adoptors feel left out because of some of the rules, but it's usually in the best interest of the dogs.  We're not so sure in this case.
