NY Socialite Brooke Astor Dies at 105

Socialite, civic leader, philanthropist, and dachshund lover Brooke Astor has died at the age of 105. She donated 200 million dollars to New York charities over her lifetime. She was awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom for her work in 1998. Vincent Astor, her third husband, was the chairman of the board of Newsweek magazine, and one of the richest Americans at the time of his death in 1959. He was the son of millionaire businessman John Jacob Astor IV, who died in the sinking of the Titanic. According to, her dachshunds included Fafner Pichou and Dolly.
