Wiener Dogs Tear It Up In Buda, Texas

Congratulations to all the Dachshunds who raced at the 2012 Buda Wiener Dog Races in Buda, Texas over the weekend.  Hundreds of dogs, usually over 600, competed to take the crown in the 15th annual event.  We haven't heard who this year's Champions are yet, but we'll keep you posted as more coverage is available.

Those Very Special Dachshunds: Vasco da Gama

How Handsome

Thanks so much to James Hall for writing in about his beautiful and beloved red smooth boy 'Vasco da Gama.'  We know that every single day with him is a blessing.  James writes:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

I love your blog!

Back in 2006, a friend whose husband worked at the Providence, RI animal control office told me that they had "that dog you've been looking for" was at the pound. I knew the chances were slim, since I was looking for a standard short-haired red dachshund, This was the kind of dog I had always wanted since I was a kid.

Oddly enough, when I arrived, there were 30 pit bulls, 2 or 3 chihuahua mixes, and the gorgeous guy that we would name Vasco da Gama. he was living in the Director's office. The vet thought he was probably 2 or 3 years old. I cannot quite imagine how anyone would have abandoned this amazing dog. He came to us neutered, house trained, and willing to walk very nicely on a leash. After a few months, my partner was able to convince him that he had nothing to fear from other dogs, and he has learned not to be aggressive in the park.

One month ago, we discovered that Vasco has an inoperable and aggressive tumor on his prostate. We are spoiling him and saying a gradual good bye. Needless to say we are heartbroken, and feel our nearly six years with him was too short. I know this community of dachshund lovers will appreciate our experience, and these photo of our proud guy keeping watch over Casco Bay in Maine a few summers ago, and posing on a dachshund-sized chair in our living room in a photo by the very talented Brian Jones.

Pookie the Dachshund Prepares to Write the Great American Canine Novel

Thanks very much to Alexander Nazaryan, Deputy Op-Ed Editor of the New York Daily News for writing in with a link to his latest piece.  Hilarious!   It's a bit too short to excerpt, so here it is in all its entirety for your reading pleasure:

She sat there, deep in thought: How could she, a dachshund in the autumn of her life, put on paper all she had learned about la condition chien? The constant begging for treats, the humiliating reference to her elongated shape, the squirrels she had chased, the dirty socks she had devoured.

Once, there had been a crust of pizza that she managed to eat off the sidewalk. Oh, it was so many years ago now, but the faint taste of pepperoni flooded back, as had Proust's taste of that youthful madeleine, and with it, all the memories of her canine life that she was now inspired to record for eternity.

Quickly she wrote, for she knew that soon her master would demand she go out for her evening poop.


We'll be first in line when Pookie's novel comes out.

Is It Or Isn't It A Dachshund On The New Yorker?

Thanks to several of our friends for sending in a scan of the April 30, 2012 cover of The New Yorker magazine.  Some of our friends say it's a Dachshund, some of our friends say no way.  Generally when faced with such a dilemma, we go by the old adage:  If you have to ask yourself if it's a Dachshund, then it's probably not. 

We'll settle for Dachshund mix on this one.  And how hilarious is this cover?

Josh Duhamel and Fergie Lose Their Little Meatloaf

Thanks to Gatinha for writing in with the news that actor Josh Duhamel and his wife Fergie, vocalist for The Black Eyed Peas, lost their beloved 'Meatloaf' on April 1st.  Our hearts go out to them.  Mr. Duhamel tweeted:

We lost our dog Meatloaf today. He was one of the kindest sweetest souls I've known. He'll be missed. RIP little buddy.

Dick Clark, Dachshund and Dog Lover

With the recent passing of American radio and television personality Dick Clark, one has to ask oneself:  Was he a Dachshund Lover?  Dog magazines across the globe have recently profiled Mr. Clark's fondness of canines, stating that he had up to five dogs at a time, he designed his Malibu home with extra large showers to wash his dogs, and that dogs roamed freely at the Dick Clark Productions offices.  But what about Dachshunds?  Excerpt from The Bark:

In recent years, the Clarks had a pug named Mrs. Jones, and Henry VIII, a 110-pound Weimaraner. There was also Lucille, a Dalmatian who was a gift from Gloria and Emilio Estefan - flown in via private jet. Bernardo was a Dachshund-mix the Clarks found on the streets of San Bernardino. They dropped him off at the pound and then made a U-turn and picked him up. (He would become their fourth Dachshund.)

A June, 2001 article in the Pet Press goes on to say:

He got his name because “we found him as a street dog in San Bernardino.  As a youngster Dick’s Uncle gave him a ceramic Dachshund, and he’s loved Dachshunds ever since. He’s had at least three of them during the years, and that’s one of the reasons he wanted to keep Bernardo.

And of his Dachshund 'Louie,' syracuse.com notes:

In a 2002 interview with The Post-Standard, Clark talked about living in Central New York and working seven nights a week, spinning records as a radio DJ fresh out of SU. When he came home late at night, Clark recalled, his wife and baby were sleeping. His dachshund, named after an SU roommate, waited up.
“The thing I remember about Louie was he was always there to greet me,” Clark said. “He was just a terrific dog.”

We apologize for the lack of posting over the last week.  All is fine with Joey and Rowdy, but all has not been fine with our home phone and DSL/magical interweb!  It has been down for a whole week!  AT&T finally came to fix it just now - it seems they were doing maintenance last week and they "mis-assigned" our line.  Ahem.

Odds are pretty good that it will never happen again, so be sure to head over to Google today, where a disabled Dachshund is featured in a photograph on the home page.  Google is celebrating the 100th birthday of French photographer and pioneer photojournalist Robert Doisneau, 14 April 1912 – 1 April 1994. 

Doisneau is renowned for this 1950 image Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Town Hall).

But ask any Dachshundist, and you'll find this wonderful 1977 image to be a favorite:  Un chien à roulettes (A dog on wheels).

TALE OF A DACKEL

"The sausage hound!  The sausage hound!"

     The children shout with glee.

As with my pet I saunter forth

     to view the scenery.

"Where did you get the funny dog?"

     They ask with puzzled air,

"Is he one of that German kind?"

     The curiouser dare.

"This is the Baron v Houghton," I

     explain,

"And though at times he may look ratzi,

     He was born right here, and he's not a Nazi!"

When speaking of the canine species

     My friends go into raptures keen

And boast of prowess in the hunt

     And trophies won in field and stream.

"Oh pardon us, Miss B." they say,

     "Are you of the sporting set?"

Eager, I take the gauntlet up,

     "Ah yes....a Dachshund is my pet."

A blankish stare, a furrow brow

     And then, as though they'd made a find,

They laugh and say "Oh, NOW I know!.....

     The Born-Under-A-Bureau kind!"

"Dog and a half," is sometimes said

     When I point to streamlines classy,

Or indicate his ram-like nose

     And praise his low-slung chassis.

How can I make them feel the times

     He fills my heart with swift delights,

His foolish grin that welcomes me,

     The fun and rompings he invites?

Ah, well, it doesn't really matter -

     By me he'll always be adored,

And comments buzzing 'round his head,

     I note, leave him polite but bored.

Firefighters Rescue Dachshund Stuck in Tree in Cemetery

We couldn't make this one up if we tried!  We've all heard of firefighters rescuing cats from trees, but have you ever heard of a dog needing rescue from a tree, much less a Dachshund?  Well, meet red longhair 'Cappy,' a pretty rescue-girl who hails from Beaufort, South Carolina.  Cappy went missing about 6 PM Sunday, and her human, Mimi Austin, asked for help finding her on facebook.  So, her friends joined in the search at about 12:30 in the morning.  Excerpt from The Island Packet:

They went straight to the cemetery, which is close to Austin's house.
Flashlights in hand, the women searched until they thought they heard barking in the back of the cemetery.
"We rushed to where we thought we heard it, and we traced it to this big oak tree with major brush around it," she said. "Once we got to the tree, the barking stopped."
Austin was on her porch and came rushing over at the familiar sound of Cappy's bark. Thinking her dog was caught in the brush, she started cutting some of it away with clippers.
The women started getting frustrated with searching in the dark, when two Beaufort police officers stopped by to see what three women, a dog and a car were doing in the rear of the cemetery, Mrs. Austin's friend Kim Bonturi said. One officer shone his light up in the tree and spotted the dog.
The dachshund had climbed up 12 feet in the tree, out of reach of the women and officers even with Bonturi's eight-foot ladder.
The women had to wait about 45 minutes until firefighters Vezin and David Evans, who had been out on a medical call, arrived with a ladder.
"She was just happy to be in her mom's arms," Bonturi said of the dachshund.
