Dachshund Oddities in History: Dog Who Walked on Two Front Legs After Lawnmower Incident
(click photo to enlarge)
Long before there was 'Faith,' the inspirational biped dog who walks on her 2 hind legs, was this black and tan smooth girl apparently named 'Doggie,' who lost her hind legs after an unfortunate lawnmower incident, and learned to walk on her front legs. Little is known about this girl except from this article from the American Dachshund, February, 1966:
BELIEVE IT OR NOT -
Rear Legs Severed, Dachshund Learns to Walk on Front Legs
This photo was reproduced from a newspaper clipping received from E. Dolores Faust of Sinking Spring, Penna. No other picture was obtainable, said Miss Faust.
Nor was the name of the newspaper.
But the clipping, apparently quite recent, said a 12-year-old female Dachshund named Doggie does all her walking on her front legs. The story quotes a veterinarian named Dr. Sam Foss and the dog's owner, Charles Reagan, "a 58-year-old farmer from Rushville, Ind."
The story in part:
"I was using a power mower on the front lawn," said Reagan. "Doggie had never come within 20 yards of that mower. But suddenly a rabbit dashed across the lawn and Doggie chased it."
"When the rabbit made a sudden turn, Doggie ran right into the path of the mower blades. I heard a crunch, heard Doggie yelp, and saw her squirm on the ground."
"Her left rear leg had been cut off cleanly, without leaving a stump. Her right leg had been cut in half, leaving a 4-inch stump. I saw the remains of her rear legs on the grass, and I cried like a baby."
After two weeks in animal hospital, bandages were removed. The wounds had healed perfectly. Doggie spent her first week back home just sitting, looking puzzled.
Reagan went to a specialist, "I was willing to spend $1,000 to help Doggie walk again," he said. When he got home that evening, Doggie barked and walked right over to him - standing on her front legs. He invited Dr. Foss to come and see.
"Doggie not only managed to balance perfectly, but walked from room to room, and even made it up and down stairs without falling," said Dr. Foss. "Outdoors she walked up and down steep hills without stumbling."
Doggie now follows her master all over his farm, but once in a while lies down to catch her breath.
"There's one change in Doggie," said Reagan. "Now she's really careful of all kinds of machinery. If she sees a lawn mower or a tractor, she heads in the other direction. She's a smart dog."
That's what the clipping says.

Future Dachshundists of America
Meet14-year-old Tyler McKibben and his black and tan smooth girl 'Audrey,' who hail from Paso Robles, California. After attending some wiener races in October, the 8th grader decided that his county needed its own Dachshund club, so he started one! He contacted the organizers of the event that he had attended as well as a local Dachshund rescue group to help get the word out about his new venture. Way to go Tyler! His meetup group is called the North County Dachshund Club, and they meet on the first Saturday of every month at the Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Maggie's Corner: Shopping For Dachshunds!
Like most girls, your Long and Short of it All hostess 'Maggie' loves to shop, and boy has she been busy scouring magazines and the internet for the newest designs as well as some classic Dachshund gifts that you might like for your beloved Dachshund, or something special that makes your house a home for the holidays. Like Maggie says "you can't take it with you, so you may as well spend it!" Above, thanks so much to our new pal 'Molly' for sending in the link to Talbots. Click around the links on the site for a while, there's a Dachshund on almost every page!
Heading over to Pottery Barn, this silver-plated Dachshund bank might make the holidays very merry for a special youngster in your life. It will set you back $39, but it ships for free. It's a pretty fair size too, measuring in at 3" wide x 7" deep x 5.5" high. Don't forget about the other Pottery Barn Dachshund we featured in July.
Our Kansas City pal 'Dash' sends this one in, thanks! His mom noticed it in the SkyMall catalog while en-route to Mexico for the holidays. How nice! Adjustable, polished sterling silver fits up to a 7 1/2" wrist, and it's looooong on personality. $69.95.
Silver and gold, silver and gold, Ev'ryone wishes for silver and gold. In this case it's copper, and a little birdy told us that our pal Baxter's mom wishes for this to be in her holiday stocking, so if you happen to know her, this can be found at Etsy for just $44. A little daschund hangs from fine antique copper chain, 16" in length.
And speaking of stocking stuffers, you can't go wrong with this beautiful handmade Italian leather Dachshund keychain available at What's Up Dox Dachshund Shoppe for just $16.99. Available in 3 colors to match your Doxie's coat: dark reddish-brown, light reddish-tan, and black. Comes ready to give in a gift box.
Our friends 'Oscar and Hans' found the perfect Christmas gift for mom. It’s a little higher-priced then they are used to though, and they wonder if Garnet Hill will accept kibble and chewies as payment instead? This aqua lambswool cardigan with Dachshund embellishment can be yours for $98.
A Dachshund clock? Yours is not to reason why, as they say. This modern gem was sent in by our pal 'Clancy,' thanks so much little man! Orange Acrylic, and 16" wide x 9" tall, this will cost $49.95 with free shipping at Naked Decor, home of those Dachshund pillows we featured waaaaay back in January of 08.
And finally, while Maggie could go on all day detailing Dachshund paraphernalia, (there's no shortage, that's for sure!), we'll end with something you've probably never seen before, and will probably never see again: a life sized papier mache automaton Dachshund. From the video description: His name is Roman and came to us from Romania but he was born in Paris as part of the Roullet & Decamps family. The clockwork mechanism makes him nod his head and open and shut his mouth for about 20 minutes. Roman has a suede skin and a history that is quite tragic. There is one gunshot hole still visible on his neck at the front, just above the collar. During restoration about 12 airgun pellets were removed from his head. He is happy now and looking forward to a new owner who will look after him.
Serious Dachshund collectors can bring this home for £2450, about $4100 US Dollars at The House of Automata.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Philly!
Good gracious, check out the handsome mug on this guy! Wirehair 'Philly,' a Dachshund of many great names, hails from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his human, Mike L. writes:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
Love the blog. My girlfriend and I check it daily.
I have to forward along two pictures of my apricot wirehair Philly, ie Philly Monster, ie, weasel, ie, weaselface, ie #7 Value Meal: The McWeasel, ie #1 Scruff, ie Scruff McGruff.
The lil’ guy has come a long way. His littermate’s owner was my roommate and since then, he’s moved to Iowa from Minnesota. Philly has been lonely and we’re looking for the right rescue dachshund as a friend. In time, hopefully we can have a long/short and scruff blog! From a farm wiener dog to super scruff to being photographed in the haughtiest of neighborhoods!

We can't wait to hear about that perfect rescue that will be in your lap before you know it. Philly will be so happy!
Philly relaxes with one of his pals.
Dachshund Love Stories: "I was determined I would not like that dog."
We will always win you over. Meet red smooth 'Schatzie,' and her human, retired police chief George E. Fusco Sr., who hail from Mount Airy, Maryland. Mr. Fusco was never a dog lover after getting Rocky Mountain spotted fever from a dog as a child, but his wife finally laid down the law after 17 years, when she took her husband on a secret drive to pick up Schatzie from a breeder some 8 years ago.
"Isn't it odd how something ever so slight can change a deep, long-standing attitude you have about something?" said Mr. Fusco.

Bubba Gump's Fox Troubles
One-year-old red smooth 'Bubba Gump' poses for a photo following an encounter with a fox that reportedly attacked him in Elgin, Illinois, early Monday morning. Bubba was saved by Jim Semmens, who was watching the dog for a friend.
"I ran out to the back and for a second I saw a red, bushy tail," Semmens said. "A fox grabbed him by the neck and was trying to get him off of the leash, trying to take him away."
Despite the attack, Bubba Gump did not appear to be injured, only startled.
Glad to hear this cutie is OK. Read all about it at the Courier-News.

Dachshund News Roundup!
With the wind at your back and the sun in front of you, welcome to another edition of Dachshund News Roundup on the very first day of December, 2009. It's cool outside, and it's only going to get colder. Got those winter coats out of the closet? Kicking things off, it's the photo of the day at L.A. Unleashed, and this feisty red smooth certainly deserves the press. His human jokes that he is reinventing the Greyhound Bus company logo!
In rescue news, last week saw the largest seizure of animals in the history of Bandera County, Texas, and they were all Dachshunds, 43 of them to be exact (and 2 cats). The dogs were removed from a breeder based out of Utopia. Sure doesn't sound like a utopia to us! Pictured here is Jennifer Gaertner, community liaison for animal control issues, and one of the sweet little rescues. Organizations that assisted with the seizure included Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Societies of the United States and Bexar County and the Cowboy Capital Pet Assistance League, as well as PetSmart Charities. Read all about it the Bandera County Courier.
Meanwhile, in Manatee, Florida, 'Peachy,' the red smooth seen here, was attacked by a coyote that was traveling in a pack of three as soon as she was let outside to do her business on Sunday morning. The coyote carried Peachy away with her human running after them, and Peachy was finally released by the coyote. Peachy is recovering after surgery to repair the puncture wounds. She will also have to be quarantined for 6 months because she was not up to date on her rabies shot. Read more and see several photos at the Bradenton Herald. We're hoping that Peachy has a quick and full recovery.
And finally, when you need inspiration, look no further than this blind and deaf Dachshund named Rudolph, so aptly named by his human because - just like the reindeer's nose guides Santa's sleigh in the dark -- Rudolph's nose guides him every day. Now with his fifth and final family, Rudolph visits schools around metro Detroit, Michigan, with his human Marcia Fishman, to show that he is a happy dog despite his disabilities. Read all about him at freep.com. Contact information is available at the link to buy "Rudolph's Nose Knows" coloring books, just $5 each.
We actually featured Rudolph about a year ago at this time, but you can never get too much of a good thing, as they say.
Have a nice day.

A Dachshund Christmas Poem
We can't think of a better way to usher in the holidays than with some Christmas Dachshund poetry. Via youtuber Yetanotherstringband: Featuring pictures of dachshund puppies, this original lighthearted poem set to music tells the story of the havoc one wiener dog puppy wreaks on a family's home the day after Christmas.
You may remember that 'Yetanotherstringband' created the lovable Wiener Dog Song.
Those Special Dachshunds: Black Friday Score For Harley!

Mom found it at the World Market store on Black Friday. Here is a picture of me and my BDFF Molly in it after an exhausting day of playing and shopping. Molly is a 5 month old Cavalier and I can't wait till I get to see her again at Christmas.

Hey thanks for sending in the great pic Harley! Maggie is still tired today as well from all her black Friday shopping, but didn't find anything quite so festive. Way to score!
The Dachshund Underground Railroad: A Thanksgiving Homecoming for Lanie
photo: MWDR
Meet blind 5-month-old red smooth 'Lanie,' who now hails from Bloomington, Minnesota. We had the honor and privilege of transporting this sweet little MidWest Dachshund Rescue girl some 300 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to St. Louis, Missouri, so that she could find her forever home. We were traveling in that direction for the Thanksgiving holiday, and her new humans were in the area for Thanksgiving as well, so it was a great opportunity to get this girl to her forever humans on Thanksgiving day.
We can't help with fostering, and we transport when we can, but what made this trip special for us is that we got to be with her for a whole day, and she spent the night with us at our grandma and grandpa's house! Usually when we transport, we never get to spend much time with the dogs, so this was really nice. You would never know that Lanie was blind. She immediately scoped out the house, and put all the objects that she could run into in her memory bank....she's SMART! She was just a little pistol running around the house, and had very little issue running into things once she quickly became acclimated to her surroundings. We even let her chew on our ears for extended periods of time without becoming upset about it. And boy, does she love to snuggle.
We got up early on Thanksgiving day to meet her new humans (and to be back home in time for Turkey!) and it was just a match made in heaven. Lanie will be living with other dogs (including a Dachshund!) in her new home, and these dogs will be her eyes for her.
We know that Lanie has found the love she deserves in her new forever home. Thanks to MWDR for finding such a perfect home for her, and to her new humans for adopting a special needs dog (although Lanie would argue the point that she has any special needs at all). Welcome home Lanie.

Happy Thanksgiving: Turkey Theft!
(click any photo to enlarge)
Those Sheridan Avenue Boys strike again! Thanks so much to their mom for sending in these delicious Thanksgiving photos. Above is 'Lincoln' with Gobbles the Beanie Baby, but watch out!......
'Jetson' tries to steal Gobbles while Lincoln is sleeping! Turkey Thief!
We're sure that won't be the only turkey stolen by a Dachshund this Thanksgiving.
Have a great one.
Dachshunds in Film: The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Does your dog bite?
Thanks as always to our good pal 'Polly' (the rat and goldfish hunter!) for sending this in. Polly would also like to let it be known that a mouse or rat a day keeps the cat away. She is determined to keep her human from getting a cat, so she is mouser supreme. As of today, her count is 12!
A Dachshund Thanksgiving Homecoming
This Cleveland, Ohio, family lost their home to a housefire last Saturday, but Thanksgiving will still be special because they found their beloved black and tan smooth 'Laela.'
Aren't you thankful for your Dachshund?
Welcome home Laela.
