Meet 'Molly,' the 6-year-old longhair black and tan, and her human Kathy Mattox, who hail from New Bern, North Carolina. Molly's human had to make a tough decision when she noticed that Molly was having trouble walking, and she decided to go ahead and have surgery performed on Molly, even though the surgery wouldn't guarantee that she would walk again. Excerpt from the Sun Journal:
Without hesitating, Mattox agreed to the surgery and Molly was rolled into surgery.
By all accounts, the $3,000 surgery was a success.
Molly now walks with the assistance of a wheeled cart. “Molly’s vets at the Craven Animal Hospital who treat her, told me about the cart,” Mattox said. She purchased the cart, trademark name Eddie’s Wheels, online for $400.
“People think I am crazy, but I could not put her down. It breaks my heart to think that no one would go this route. I would encourage people to save their animals; they can cope with it,” Mattox said.
Read all about Molly, who will soon be certified as a therapy dog so people can benefit from her misfortune, at the Sun Journal. As they say: If life throws you a lemon, make lemonade.

Las Vegas Dachshund Dog Succombs To Ant Poison
It's with a heavy heart that we report the passing of 'Heidi,' a 10-pound 5-year-old red smooth from Las Vegas, Nevada, who died from ant spray poisoning after the holidays. Excerpt from the Mesquite Local News:
When the tree comes down and the cookies and candy are gone – what's left?
Here in the desert you might have some uninvited guests, by the thousands, referred to as the domestic ANT!
Heidi's human had sprayed her house after the holidays to eliminate her unwanted guests.
After a few days, the ants returned, so a heavy spray was then applied.
Heidi and her sibling were playing as normal, when later the owner realized she wasn’t being herself.
She immediately visited her vet, who examined Heidi.
Not long after her owners left the vet’s office, a phone call came – Heidi had gone into convulsions and passed.
Rest in Peace little one. Read more at the Mesquite Local News.

Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine
Well they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie

News From The Motherland
In the "Dachshund stories we like to hear about" department, a smart long dog from Bredstedt, Germany, got lost while hunting foxes and apparently turned herself in to the local Lost and Found office on Tuesday!
Druse vom Hoellengrund, a bitch trained to attack foxes in their underground lairs, trotted into the municipal office building in Bredstedt just after it opened for the day, and lay down exhausted on the floor in front of the elevator.
A receptionist then called down staff from the lost-and-found office in the building to register the dog.
Druse was quickly re-united with her owner, thanks to a local hunter who happened to be in the building and recognized the animal.
Officials said Druse seemed to have got lost during a hunt on Saturday, probably after losing a fox's scent during a chase, and headed into the small town after failing to find her way home. Source.
And in the "Dachshunds stories we don't like to hear about, but is a good lesson learned for others" department, a not-so-smart human let their Dachshund ride on an escalator at a Karstadt department store in Germany on Monday night. All was fine until the escalator neared the top and the dog got its nails stuck in the metal tongs of the retracting stairs. OUCH! Although the escalator stopped, department store employees had to rescue the dog from his predicament. He was severely injured and required emergency treatment but is recovering well. Source.

Dachshund Parade on New Years Eve in Key West
This is a great little video with a fun Dachshund song from the 2010 Key West Dachshund Walk by FloridaKeysTV who notes:
Key West has gone to the dogs! Watch as 156 dachshunds and their owners parade through historic Old Town. This wiener wonderland walk is an annual family-friendly prelude to the island's New Year's festivities.
The long-bodied canines and their owners gathered in Key West's historic Old Town district for the "wiener wonderland" walk. Some dachshunds were dressed in costumes or offbeat accessories. The walking route, which includes a block of Key West's famed Duval Street, is deliberately kept brief to cater to the canine contingent's short legs.

The Dog That WAS Just For Christmas
Was he even given a chance? This 7-week old Dachshund mix puppy at the Cheshire Dogs Home in Warrington, England, needs a new home. Hundreds of dogs and cats were abandoned in Britain over the holidays - due in part to both the recession and people changing their mind about "Christmas presents." Read more and see more pics of this cutie at The Daily Mail.

Key West Dachshund Walk 2010
It must be the beginning of a New Year, because as sure as that big ball dropped in New York City (ball...did someone say BALL?!), Dachshunds converged in Key West, Florida, for the 5th Annual Key West Dachshund Walk.
