Dachshunds To Watch Out For
If this chocolate sweetie looks familiar, that's because you recognize 'Riley,' the long dog who took the races this past March at the grand opening of a Pink's Hot Dog restaurant in California. Or maybe you recognize Riley's human, Brittany Hayes, who won an Olympic Silver Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for water polo. This smashing duo will now be competing at the 15th running of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals on Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course in Los Alamitos, California. “I am competitive, of course,” Hayes says. “But Riley just loves to race. He’s a natural. People might think I’m a crazy dog lady. Well, I am a crazy dog lady but not one who goes crazy if my dog doesn’t win.”
Read all about them at the Press-Telegram or the OC Register. Lucy bolts from her practice starting box.
Now meet 'Lucy,' a red smooth from Spring Valley Lake, California, who will also be competing this weekend in Los Alamitos. And Lucy isn't just competing, she's also a poster gal for the Wienerschnitzel restaurants this year! “It seems like it’s really not about the one that’s the fastest, it’s the one that can maintain focus for the entire 13 seconds it takes to run the course,” Kevin Barda, Lucy’s owner, said with a laugh. Read all about Lucy at the Daily Press.
We don't know who to root for!
We've been anxiously awaiting for some great promo videos for this year's Los Alamitos races, but alas, they have yet to be found. This one from last year is worth a second look though....or even a third or a fourth.

Dachshunds at the Denali
Our Maryland friends, 'Kate' and 'Allie,' have been doing some summer traveling. They send this vacation snapshot all the way from Alaska! Thanks so much! They write:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
Was travelling in the 49th state this past week, and had to take a picture of Denali Dogs---outside the Denali National Park. Let's just say there are not many other places to lunch up there! We did meet one doxie pup--Rusty the Red at the Palmer Friday Fling (Craft/Farmers market). He was a cutie.
Hope you had a happy 4th of July,
Kate and Allie in Silver Spring

Canadian Wiener Dogs Have Their Day
Over 1,000 (ONE THOUSAND!) long dogs attended the 10th Annual Wienerfest in Thamesford, Ontario, on Saturday, July 3rd, 2010 for the largest gathering of Dachshunds ever in Canada. Activities included a costume contest, bobbing for wieners, wiener races, and a tunnel chase! The event raised money for a pair of dog rescue and adoption agencies, Helping Homeless Pets and Tiny Paws Dog Rescue Canada.
Read all about it and watch a video at the Woodstock Sentinel-Review.
Dachshund Abandoned in Trash Can at the Car Wash
Just when you think the world is a slightly better place, a story like this pops up. But the good news is that the elderly smooth Dachshund, who was left in a trash can last week at the car wash of a gas station in Albertville, Alabama, may be adopted out to her forever home this coming Saturday. We hope she gets the loving home she so justly deserves.

Boniface, The Deep-Diving Dachshund
Thanks to the many readers who sent in links to news stories about 'Boniface,' the Russian Diving Dachshund. We got so many emails about the story, we can't begin to thank everyone, but trust us, we're humbly grateful for the story tips! It's funny how odd little stories like this blow up to be global news. We first featured Boniface back on May 6, 2010 with little fanfare, but once The Associated Press sends out a news story, it sure goes viral - which happened over the weekend. And it's great when Dachshunds get such global attention!
Here's the breakdown from the AP:
MOSCOW — Any dachshund owner knows the feisty breed rarely backs off from a challenge, but one in Russia is taking that reputation to new heights — or depths.
The dog named Boniface is learning how to scuba dive.
Owner Sergei Gorbunov, a professional diver in the Pacific Coast city of Vladivostok had a diving suit complete with helmet made for the dog and is teaching him the tricks of the trade.
In a recent demonstration, Boniface barked eagerly as Gorbunov readied the equipment and uncomplainingly endured being hung upside-down as Gorbunov fitted the suit on him.
Once underwater, he seemed to have a different outlook, emitting some high-pitched whines.
Gobunov says, "Underwater, I don't think he experiences any stress."
Now honestly, we're not the biggest fans of this story - we're not so sure that deep under water is the place for a Dachshund to be. Sure, we might dive down a little depth to fetch a ball or something, but generally that's because we want to, and some of us Dachshunds are comfortable doing that. Not all of us though.
Personally, we tend to agree with these ABC World News Now correspondents: "Oh, Good God." What's your take?

Dachshund Fends Off Coyote
We hear so many sad stories of Dachshunds meeting their end when they have a tussle with a coyote - now here's a tale where the Dachshund show's what's what. Meet our newest hero, sweet smooth "Little Puddin,'" a chocolate and tan who hails from Bayside, Wisconsin, population 4,518.
Canada Day Wiener Dog Races
We'd be remiss if we didn't wish our Canadian friends a belated happy Canada Day while we're off celebrating Independence Day here in the states. The Dachshunds came out in force to the first ever Wiener Dog races at Northlands Park in Edmonton on Thursday to help celebrate the big day. Enjoy this great video by vimeoer thehorses.com.

Anxiety
Maggie's Little Helper
BOOM! Whistle, POP! fizzle....KaPow! It's a tough weekend for 'Maggie,' your Long and Short of it All hostess, and many of our Dachshund friends. Does this herbal anxiety med help relieve the stress? Not really. But along with soothing music, closed windows, lavender spray, kisses, and a few extra treats, it's a start.
Be safe and have fun. Read tips to protect your Dachshund today at The Humane Society of the United States.

Royal Dachshund Watch: Caroline, Princess of Hanover
We are Royalty after all, and as such, we love it when we're favored by the Monarchs. Caroline, Princess of Hanover, formally styled Her Royal Highness The Princess of Hanover, has returned to reside in Monte Carlo with her children. The Princess of Hanover is the eldest child of the late Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his wife, the former American film actress Grace Kelly. She is seen here with her two Dachshund puppies on June 25, 2010, while watching her daughter Charlotte perform in the Equestrian Grand Prix. Source.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Jed!
Thanks so much to Jolyn Liam for sending in such nice photos of her handsome red smooth 'Jed.' This duo hails all the way from Malaysia, and they enjoy watching the world cup together and rooting for Germany (of course)! Jolyn writes:
Dear Joey & Maggie,
I've been reading your blog for the past 7 months and I have been constantly delighted by its contents. Great job you guys!
Here are a couple of photos of my standard dachshund, Jed, whom i adopted at 3 months and is currently 10 months.
Jed is still a very naughty pup but he never fails to put a smile on my face - even when he gets into trouble. Just one look at him instantly brightens up my day and I love him to bits. I especially love his 4paws-in-the-air gig which he does when he snoozes. ;p
All I can say is after waiting 23 years for a dog, Jed is perfect!
Looking forward to more great posts from you guys.
Woofs n licks,
Jolyn & Jed

If You Think You're Putting That Thing On My Snout For a Photo Op, Guess Again
'Owen,' a miniature Dachshund owned by Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Fire Company firefighter Jim Shepard, although declining to test out a new pet oxygen mask, seems to be happy about the fact that two kits were donated to the firehouse by Tony Trasatti of Invisible Fence in Doylestown this morning. Piebald Therapy
Handsome black and tan piebald 'Patches,' a helper dog, gets some attention from Johnny Adams (left), 13 of Haltom City, Jonathan Jones, 16 of Waco, and Harrison Vaughan, 12 of Dallas, at a summer camp sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association at Camp John Marc, near Meridian, Texas, Thursday, June 24, 2010. Apparently Patches' nickname is 'Speed Bump!' Read all about the Muscular Dystrophy Association camp at the Star-Telegram.
