Compassionate Cat Nurses Orphan Dachshund Puppies

It's been a while since there have been some good Dachshund interspecies musings around these parts, and this Texas shelter momma cat who has taken on four Dachshund puppies who lost their mother sure fits the bill.  Meet 'Beatrix,' her five kitties, and four Dachshund puppies.  Excerpt from Central Texas Now:

When the mother of these four miniature daschunds died while birthing her puppies, the owner called Pam Peacock [of Pam's D.O.G. (Depending on God) House in China Spring, Texas] with a life-saving request. "They would've needed somebody to bottle feed the puppies every hour and a half to two hours around the clock for at least two or three weeks or have a mother's milk."
Peacock had no dogs that fit the bill, but Beatrix, a rescue cat and new mother came to mind. "We discussed it and I said 'I know it can be done,' I don't know if she would take the dogs because this is one cat I have out here that doesn't like dogs," says Peacock.
But the moment that the first puppy was put in front of Beatrix, her maternal instincts kicked in. "She just kind of put her arms around them and pulled them up to her and started cleaning them," says Peacock, "and they started nursing and they're doing fine."

The owner of the puppies has decided to adopt Beatrix since she saved the lives of his puppies!  Read more at Central Texas Now.

O.K., when can I take this thing off, already?

'Ziti,' a 14-year-old, red, mini-Dachshund from Soho, dressed as — what else? — a hot dog, was among the hundreds of Dachshunds and their proud owners gathered in New York's Washington Square Park last Saturday at noon. It was no mere coincidence, but the 19th annual Dachshund Spring Fiesta. Organized by the DAX Friendship Club, which was co-founded by two Greenwich Village residents, the furry fiesta occurs the last Saturday of April. But since one dachs fest a year would never suffice, there’s also a companion Dachshund Fall Fiesta, held on the first Saturday of October.  Source.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Frank!

(click any photo to enlarge and admire)

Thanks so much to Rocko Designs for sending in such beautiful photos of their handsome red smooth boy 'Frank!'  They write:

Hi Joey and Maggie.

I thought I’d send you some photos of my dog Frank.

He’s a standard Dachshund, and we live on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Frank’s favourite places in the whole wide world are either at the beach, or snuggled up at the end of the bed, always under the doona, even on the hottest nights.

UPDATE: April 30, 2010: Frank now has his own blog! Don't miss it: frankdavid

Wire (-Hair) Wednesday

Wire Weenie by flickrer sillydog

Thank Dog it's Wednesday cause that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday - a day devoted to that elusive Wirehaired Dachshund!  Today however, it's just a wire Dachshund.  The photographer of this fine photo notes:  My mother gives me all manner of dachshund related crap. This was meant to help me get my bills in on time (as she continues to believe I can't handle such basic tasks despite my advanced age).

Badger News Roundup!

We've certainly got a love-hate relationship with these critters.  On the one hand, being badger dogs, all our instincts tell us to "go get it!" - we're slightly salivating as we type these words and drooling over the thought of bagging our very own badger.  On the other hand though, we're not sure if we've ever seen anything so cute as an 8-week-old badger missing an ear, lovingly named 'Vincent' after Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, who famously cut off one of his ears   That's right, it's a Badger News Roundup for a beautiful Spring day, Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  Kicking things off, this little fella is being looked after by staff at St Tiggywinkles (huh?) Wildlife Hospital in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, England, after being attacked. Excerpt from This Is Local London:

Les Stocker from the hospital said: “He's doing fine. There's a little bit of damage to the bit round his ear but he should be OK.
“It might have been a fox or a dog that came across him and attacked him. I think another badger would have killed him.”
Vincent will be released back into the wild later this year.

Meanwhile, these often pesky little digging machines have been busy desecrating 100-year-old graves at a cemetery in Sidmouth, Devon, England, unearthing the human remains.  Excerpt from The Daily Mail:

A Natural England representative and Department of Environment badger expert lan Crowe visited Sidmouth Cemetery and will make recommendations about how the badgers should be managed 'in a sensitive, humane and legal way'.
A council spokesman said: 'There is absolutely no question of any harm being done to the animals and it is illegal to interfere with a badger sett during the breeding season.'
The council will erect a sign near the newly dug sett, informing the public of the presence of badgers and explaining they have caused some disturbance.
'In July, after obtaining expert advice, we may be able to fit one-way doors at the entrances to the badger tunnels.
'This will mean the animals can leave their sett but cannot get back in.'

Read more and see more photos at The Daily Mail.

And finally, thousands of badgers will lose their lives in a cull planned in south west Wales over the next few months.  Animal activists, including Queen guitarist Brian May, are up in arms over the cull, which would cover over 100 square miles, and is aimed at combating bovine TB.  Excerpt from BBC News:

The assembly government has said compensating farmers cost the taxpayer nearly £24m last year and cattle and badgers were the main sources of the disease.
Reacting to Friday's (April 16th) ruling Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones said: "We welcome the court's decision.
"Bovine TB is one of the biggest problems facing cattle farmers across Wales, and we have to tackle all sources of the disease.
"We are dealing with an epidemic that has serious consequences for us all and we must stamp it out.

Buda Wiener Dog Races 2010: Photos and Champion

Congratulations to all the Dachshunds who raced at the 2010 Buda Wiener Dog Races in Buda, Texas over the weekend.  Over 600 dogs competed to take the crown in the 13th annual event, which went to red smooth 'Alexander,' seen here, and his human Keith Rodriguez of Hewitt, Texas.  Way to go Alexander!  Besides a trophy, our hero received roses, $500, and what looks to be a great treat basket!

Dear Maggie and Joey,

We are members of the Desert Doxie Meetup Group. Our group walked and some got a ride in the Henderson Heritage Parade in Henderson, NV, Saturday April 17, 2010!

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Gary Coleman and Wife to Breed Dachshunds

"What'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?"  We wish we were making this up, but the story originates from The National Enquirer, so it must be true.  Actor Gary Coleman, best known for his role as Arnold Jackson in the American sitcom Diff'rent Strokes is back with his wife Shannon Price, and they've bought a Dachshund puppy to celebrate.  Excerpt from aceshowbiz:

A source tells the National Enquirer, "They've never been happier and all their friends are hoping their love will stick this time."
The couple is now focused on building a more secure future together and are reportedly setting up a dog-breeding business. The insider adds, "They haven't fought at all and (they) bought a dachshund puppy to celebrate their fresh start. Gary and Shannon already had one dachshund and want to breed them. They look at it as a money-making venture that they can enjoy together."

Because we NEED more backyard breeders, right?  Gary wasn't much of a Dachshund fan in years past, apparently his wife has had several.  In 2008 when question about Gary's volatile personality, his wife responded:

Price answered that she did fear for her safety when she was questioned about it.  She answered “a lot, yes,” and also said she feared for her three dachshund dogs, which Coleman doesn’t like. Coleman answered “That doesn’t mean I’m going to kill them.”  Source.

File this under Hot Mess.  But we honestly wish them the best of luck.

City of Bozeman, Montana Cites Pet Supply Store for Dachshund Photo

If you're like us, you get excited when you see Dachshunds anywhere - from a logo on a shirt to a mural in an underpass to a photo on a pet supply store.  And what's so wrong with that?  Apparently this photo is just too big for the city of Bozeman, Montana, population 28,000, where the city has cited Dee-O-Gee (spells dog) Pet Store last week for two roughly 6-by-7-foot photos — one of a border collie and one of a pair of Dachshunds.  Excerpt from the Great Falls Tribune:

Josh and Holly Allen, who own Dee-O-Gee, question whether the photos are subject to the city’s sign code because they’re more like a mural than a sign.
Commercial buildings in Bozeman are allowed a total amount of signage, depending on the building’s size and location and Dee-O-Gee is allowed 22.5 square feet of signage. Each photo is about 42 square feet.
Violating the city’s sign law could lead to a $500 fine or six months in jail. The Allens were told to remove the photos by Thursday.

Keep up with Dee-O-Gee's struggle on their facebook page.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Winston!

Winston on the Lake Ontario shore (click any photo to enlarge and admire)

It's Wednesday, the most mysterious day of the week.  That's because we feature those mysterious Dachshunds with the wire coat who hardly ever seem to be in the news.  Yep, it's Wirehair Wednesday!   Thanks so much to Jill Lunney and Teague Patchett for sending in photos of their incredibly handsome wirehair 'Winston!'  Without any further ado:

Happy Spring to Joey and Maggie!

Our handsome furry 'son', Winston, came to us about a year and a half ago. A victim of neglect in his earlier years, Winston was rescued by a dachshund lover who owned a cattle farm outside of London, Ontario.  He turned out to be not the best farm dog, chasing the cows and nipping at their heels, so she sadly had to re-home him. Lucky for us though, we found her ad on the internet, and fell in love with Winston.

He is such a great little dog, full of personality and lovable doxie stubbornness! He has found is forever and ever home, and we couldn't be a happier little family.

Here are some pictures of our little wizard-face man!

Enjoy the sunshine!

56% - Yorkie
53% - Dachshund
51% - Poodle
43% - Pug

On the lower end:

Oklahoma Gazette's 2010 Dachshund Dash

While we're sure that hundreds of folks showed up to cheer on 96 Dachshunds who raced at the Oklahoma Gazette's 2010 Dachshund Dash on Sunday, we'll be darned if we can find any photos or video from the event....not even when searching the Oklahoma Gazette.
Regardless, the 2009 event, which had this video finally released on youtube in January of this year, is incredible to watch, especially with a black and tan piebald named 'Manford' taking the crown!  We love the wiener races where the humans race too; there aren't many of these types of events across the country.

Retriever At Heart

Meet 9-month-old dappled 'Forest,' and and his human Gus Ruetenik, who hail from Zoar, Ohio, population 193.  They operate a tree farm together, and Forest has a knack of bringing all kinds of things he finds on the farm and setting them on the porch.  Most recently, he found a 10-carat silver ring with a light purple stone, which you can claim if it's yours!  Excerpt from the Times Reporter:

“I have no idea where the puppy found it or when it was dropped,” Ruetenik said. “Someone could have been cutting a Christmas tree and it fell off. Forest brings all kinds of stuff to me – gloves, hats, scarves, twigs, sticks and socks – and promptly lays them on the porch.”

Ruetenik has accumulated an entire drawer full of keys and no one has claimed them. He said 5th-graders from St. Paul’s Catholic School at North Canton visit the tree farm in November and help cut down trees to send to the military personnel overseas. He also has a pile of items, including jackets and sweatshirts, that children forgot to take home.
Forest understands his daily scouring is rewarding. With every item he finds and places on the porch, a treat awaits.

Thanks so much to our Los Angeles pal 'Pee Wee' for sending in this hugely entertaining story.  Read all about Forest at the Times Reporter.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Naji!

Naji (click any photo to enlarge and admire)

Thanks so much to Marlo M. for sending in such nice photos of the newest addition to her pack:  longhair 'Naji.'  You may recall that we've met Naji's brother 'Mufti' before, both in his own post as well as riding the lawnmower with Dad!  These two handsome brothers hail all the way from Tasmania, Australia!  Marlo writes:

Hi Joey and Maggie,

Thought we’d introduce you to the newest member of our family – although not so new, it’s taken 6 months for him to sit still enough for us to take a photo -Naji!

Naji is a little brother to Mufti, and although we’d heard about the differences between the smooth and long haired dachshunds, we still can’t believe it. Naji is a floppy, carefree and easy going little guy, whereas big brother Mufti is much more serious and although loves a good play on the beach, is also happy to sit outside keeping watch and guarding his property (all 4 acres of it). Naji much prefers to throw himself against the netted side of the orchard, using it as a vertical trampoline! They absolutely adore each other though, and we often wonder how Mufti survived for all this time without a playmate to keep him company.

Is the child's illness the same?
Should the dosage be the same as it was?
Has the medicine lost its potency?

Dachshunds United for Human Rights

'Ziggy' - one of 120 Dachshunds taking part in "Dachshund U.N."

If you live near Melbourne, Australia, you're not going to want to miss an art installment which will take place starting in mid-May at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton.  Forty-seven Sausage Dogs will be taking part in Dachshund U.N., an exhibit by artist Bennett Miller, who is building a scale model of the Geneva hall of nations, which he will fill with Dachshunds - one for each national delegate.  Excerpt from The Age:

The Dachshund U.N. will use 120 dachshunds over three consecutive Saturdays from May 15, as part of this year's Next Wave festival. Miller is a Perth-based artist whose Dachshund Otto is his regular muse.
Dachshunds, he says, ''are a good fit for the UN and for people. They have their own racial diversity - black, brown, red. Also, even though they're restricted in their movement, they are quite determined and proud.''
The Dachshund Club of Victoria was wary when first approached by Miller. ''I wanted to make sure he was legitimate,'' says club secretary and dachshund breeder Corrienne Irvin, ''and only agreed once I was satisfied that he wasn't portraying the dogs in a demeaning way. Then I was quite happy to help him get 100 dachshunds.''
The project still needs another 20 dogs.

Find out more about the project at Next Wave.

In January of this year, the artist Bennett Miller created Dachshund Topiary Maze, an installment of wood, Topiary trees, Dachshund, and water soluble paint as part of GARDEN//ART//ACTION in Perth. Dachshunds were invited to attempt the topiary maze, while a human audience viewed the action from above.  Source.

Lily The Dachshund: Life Is Looking Up For This Sweet Girl

'Lily'

Thanks so much to our roving reporter pal 'Dylan' for sending in this troubling yet reaffirming story of 'Lily,' the little red smooth who was abused and left abandoned in a box at the side of the road in New York state.  Thankfully she now has a home where she is deeply loved.  Dylan reports:

Hi Maggie and Joey!

Dylan Dachshund here with a very heartwarming story about Lily in New York. Lily was tragically left on the side of the road in upstate New York in a closed up box. She was found by a very caring gentleman by the name of Dennis Gregory who turned her over to the local animal shelter. They in turn contacted Cyndi and Mike West (who I have had the personal pleasure of sniffing and receiving belly rubs from), who took Lily to their home and provided her with the loving care she was in need of. Mike, a former DA in Schoharie Valley, New York, then set out to bring justice to the evil people who mistreated Lily. It didn't take long and now Miss Lily is living the good life with the West family while those evil people are getting what they deserve. I just wanted to give the West family a huge Bark-out for being so amazing for Lily!!

Guster (left) and Clive (right) relax in the rocking chair.  Click any photo to enlarge.

It's Wednesday.  And that can only mean one thing:  Yep, it's Wirehair Wednesday!  Thanks so much to Jennifer and Tim Sperl for sending in such beautiful photos of their wirehair wonders 'Guster' and 'Clive,' who are both rescues from Dachshund Lovers of Texas!  They write:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

Guster needed 3 back surgeries soon after we rescued them, and we are so glad he pulled through. Surgeon said he would have to be in one of those little carts, but after lots of supplements, rehab, and acupuncture, Guster is walking and running again - not perfect, but he manages just fine.

Something that didn't come back all the way is his continence, so we have to keep him clean and dry with his stylish little belly bands.

They are brothers and are completely inseparable and love each other as much as they love us. Clive even saved Guster's life a couple years ago. Guster was in another room choking. Clive must have sensed it because he leapt off the couch and barked until we came back to pull the chew out of Guster's throat.

Their favorite thing to do is cuddle with us on the couch, chase birds out of the yard, and lay in the sun.

I am a photographer, so I have COUNTLESS photos of these 2 guys who have brought such joy to our lives!

Video: 2010 Wiener(dog) Nationals!

In a follow-up to yesterday's photos, this is a funny little vid from Saturday's Wiener Dog Nationals at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California.  Video by Sandy Stec, who is a stand-up comedian, radio DJ, and on-camera host.  She notes:  It's no secret that I'm a HUGE wienerdog fan. This video contains footage from the 2010 Wiener Nationals; including a cameo appearance from ROBERT PATTINSON! (Okay, maybe not "the" Robert Pattinson....but this dude was JUST as hot. And he knew it!)

While we've yet to hear if the real Robert Pattinson is a Wiener Lover of not, it's only a matter of time.  One thing we do know however is that the director of the newest upcoming Twilight film starring Mr. Pattinson, David Slade, is most definitely a Dachshund Lover.  As a matter of fact, his Dachshund 'Django' is his design inspiration for his artwork (source).
