Doggie Diner Set For Demolition

Thanks so much to our pal 'Franny' over at the always engaging Doxiementary for sending in the link with the sad news.  She writes:

Hi Maggie & Joey!

Hope all is well! I thought I would share some news about the Doggie Diner (with the famous Dachshund head) in San Francisco.  Via the SFGate:

The former site of a Doggie Diner outpost is set for demolition. The local classic out in the Sunset has been defunct for years, and the grinning dachshund moved down the block as an official landmark in 2005, but the building has remained.

Now, it looks like its days are numbered, as Ocean Beach Bulletin brings word that the one-story building at 2710 Sloat Boulevard (between 45th and 46th) is set to be demolished.

Most recently, it housed the Carousel Diner, but it’s been vacant for a while. Now the plan is to convert it into an “additional outdoor sales area for the Sloat Garden Center.”

City Planner Thomas Wang says that if no one files a discretionary review (complaint) by July 8, then he can sign off on the demo and pass the application onto the next city department. Tell it goodbye.

And so goes another piece of Dachshund History.  At least they saved the Dachshund Head.

Collector's Corner: Junghans Dachshund Alarm Clock

Here's a beauty you'll probably never see the likes of again - it's a fantastic vintage alarm clock mounted on white marble with a full Dachshund figurine on top.  It was manufactured circa 1890 - 1920 by German Black Forest clockmaker JUNGHANS.  Measuring approx 7.5 inches tall, this piece recently sold in working order at auction for just $565.

It's Wednesday....and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday, a day dedicated to our elusive wirehair friends!  And boy have we got a bundle of handsome for you today:  It's 'Ardie!'  Thanks so much to Ardie's mom, Rose Russo, for sending in such nice pics.  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I love your blog, and I've been following your healthcare issues with concern, I'm so happy to read you are both happy and healthy!!

I am owned by three Dachshunds: Tessa, a 15-yr-old smooth wildboar, Ted is a 10-yr-old smooth B & T dapple, and Ardbeg "Ardie" who is an 8-mo-old wirehair B & T. 

These are photos of our little comedian Ardie; maybe someday he'll make it into Wirehair Wednesday! One of these pics was taken the first day he came home with us, he was 8 weeks old and merely 3.3 pounds. He even allows me to try my knitting projects on him! He is a Dachsie through and through, as he is happiest in a cuddly weenie pile with with weenie family.  :)

Who's Your Best Man? Who's Your Maid Of Honor?

We've heard of Dachshunds taking part in wedding ceremonies before, but we gotta admit, we've never heard of a Dachshund duo who were Best Man and Maid of Honor!  Thanks so much to our pals 'Oscar' and 'Hans' for sending in the link!  They write:

We hope you have been able to stay COOL these last few days! We are a couple of hot dogs!

Maggie, we have been following your health issues and are WOOF-ingly glad that you are doing better.

Anyway, we wanted to send you this article from the Sioux Falls, SD, newspaper. Last year when Mom and Dad got married we thought we would get to play a starring role, but we ended up spending the weekend at the doggie spa. Oh well. We probably would have had to argue over which one of us was to be "best dog" and which one had to wear the Maid of Honor dress!

And whined a bit.

And the maid of honor emitted one sharp yip when it seemed as if no one was ever going to pay attention to her.

Yes, Saturday's wedding between Teresa Ruckelshausen and John Hurney was a bit untraditional.

Teresa and John knew from the start of their engagement that Teresa's dogs Buzz and Molly would be their attendants.

After all, the dachshunds had given their approval to John the minute they met.

"They liked him, so that tells you something," says Teresa, an MRI/CT technician with Sanford Health. "You listen to what your dogs tell you."

There's no mistaking our bleeding-heart liberal ways, but our pal Representative Anthony D. Weiner (D - NY) could sure take some notes from our pal Representative Ken Calvert (R-CA) on how to post photos of your wiener on the net. 
There was no drama... - just smiles and contentment when Mr. Calvert recently posted the above photo on his facebook page of his beloved 'Cali,'' wearing her Lakers' pride for all to see.

A Note From Joey and Maggie: THE CONE OF SHAME

"Someone, anyone, help me.  I do not like the cone of shame." ~ your Long and Short of it All hostess 'Maggie.'

We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow, but for today - let's just say that Maggie is too far beside herself to consider updating the blog.  She had a follow-up visit with the vet on Saturday, and it turns out that her incision where her anal tumor was removed has become infected.  She won't leave it alone, so they put on an Elizabethan collar, or as it's better known:  THE CONE OF SHAME.  Turns out another side-effect of Cushing's disease is slow wound healing, and we're sure that the location of the incision isn't helping either.  She has started back up on all her meds post-surgery:  pain meds, oral antibiotics, and also added is an antibiotic lotion which is applied every 12 hours.  Hopefully it will be better in time for the next vet appointment this Saturday. 

All weekend long Maggie has been bumping into things with the collar and getting herself pretty upset.  She can't fit between places that she normally can - i.e., squeezing between the chair and table leg.  She did finally figure out how to drink water with it on.  She even bumped into her brother 'Joey,' who jumped in the air as though a book landed on his head or something.  Thanks for your great support, big brother.

"I'll never forget this as long as I live.  I hold my dad personally responsible.  As sure as the sun rises in the morning, revenge will be mine."

Dachshund Found Under Rubble Week and a Half After Tornado in Joplin, Missouri

Feel good?  It's Friday, and boy oh boy have we got a feel-good story for you.  A week and a half after the deadly twister descended on Joplin, Missouri, a Dachshund has been found under the rubble of a 5-plex.  The red longhair checked out to be healthy at the Humane Society, and is currently in the caring hands of the ASPCA, waiting to reunite with his/her humans.  Le'ts hope it's soon.  Via KOAM-TV.

Breezy Wins "Best of Show"

That's some trophy there Breezy!

Congratulations to pretty red smooth piebald 'Breezy' for taking "Best of Show" at the Ladies of the Elks 4th annual Dog Show, in Wofford Heights, California, on May 21.  Proceeds from the annual Dog Show go to support the Elks Lodge No. 2358 scholarship fund.  Excerpt from the Kern Valley Sun:

Four-year-old Breezy Baby, a red piebald Dachshund with a natural Mohawk, was not only was the most obedient dog at the show, she was the one with the most spots, the shortest legs and when rolled all together - the epitome of the perfect pet.

Breezy also won “Most Obedient,” among other categories, collecting the most ribbons among the dogs entered. Breezy’s stunning trophy was sponsored by Kernville Animal Hospital.
Not that she's spoiled, but Breezy's four little legs rarely touch the ground. Scampering up owner Danny Elam's leg to his shoulders, Breezy views the world from her favorite perch, wrapped around Elam's neck.
“Breezy's conformation, obedience and congeniality were head and shoulders above the competition,” quipped show co-chair, Laurie Ashley.

Retro Dachshund News: Animal Companions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 9, 1971 - FREMONT, CALIFORNIA:  All stray kittens are not so lucky as 4-wks-old Buttons.  But then all canines are not so congenial as Fraulein Schnitzell Kebschell.  When Andy Oddo, 11, of Fremont brought the abandoned kitten home, Buttons touched an especially tender spot in Schnitzy's Dachshund heart and adoption proceedings began.  Now the twosome have a strange & wonderful relationship.  UPI TELEPHOTO.

(Wheaten) Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Ringo!

Thanks so much to Nancy Nesser for sending in a link about her handsome wheaten wirehaired boy 'Ringo.'  Ringo was featured in a story at NewsOK a few weeks ago about an adoption event which was taking place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  The event, Central Oklahoma Humane Society's Midnight Woofness Adoption Marathon was hoping to adopt out over 500 dogs and cats in less than two days and set a new national record.  Ringo was adopted at the event last year.  Turns out this years event adopted out 565 animal companions!  Wow. Way to go!   Excerpt from NewsOK:

Nancy Nesser lined up shortly before midnight to adopt her new dog, Ringo. He was there — waiting in the middle of the night in a parking lot with a couple hundred other homeless dogs.
“I knew I wanted another dachshund, just because I'm crazy about them,” said Nesser, who lives in Oklahoma City. “I have always heard that the wirehair dachshunds are the clowns of the breed.”
Nesser adopted Ringo during the Central Oklahoma Humane Society's Midnight Woofness adoption marathon last June, and Nesser said the dog has been a perfect fit with her and her two other dogs.

Ringo's family includes two smooth Dachshunds.  We're so glad that Ringo found such a great home.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Ke$ha Wants You to Name her Dachshund

Who?  We've no idea really.  But a quick look on wikipedia tells us that Ke$ha is an American pop singer-songwriter and rapper. Her debut single "Tik Tok", released in late 2009, reached number one in 11 countries. Her debut album, Animal, was released in January 2010 and debuted at number one in the US, Canada and Greece.   And now she's a Dachshund Lover.  And she needs a name for her girl.  She tweets:

Just got a puppy!!!! First pet ever. She's a wiener dog! So cute. Need a name. A badass name. Help!

And later:

Ok so far down to bacon, iggy, jagger, bowie or roxy (after roxy music)

Ke$ha - our vote is for Roxy - we love that name for Doxies.  Bacon, Iggy, Jagger, and Bowie just aren't dignified enough for a princess like this pup.
