Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Sparky, Who's Almost 18 Years Old!

Words can't describe the beauty of this special red longhair named 'Sparky.'  Love that frosty face!  What a blessing she must be.  Alex Levin writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I've been reading your site for some time now, and I wanted to tell you about my dachshund of 17 3/4 years, Sparky. She's the sweetest little long hair who's been with us for nearly two decades! We have another dachshund (Cocoa) but she's only 4. She'll have her chance to shine...

P.S. I really hope you appreciate the top picture... it just kind of happened!

Sparky waits patiently for her dinner.

Wow! I cannot believe this got posted! I was hoping to give some more information about our little Sparky, so I'll just leave it in the comments.

We got Sparky when I was about 4 years old, she was the biggest sweetheart and we just couldn't resist her puppy-dog face. She's become quite the little princess, jumping up on the table and such. When we have dinner she sits upright next to my mom and waits for some food to come her way. If she's ignored, she'll start shoving her paw into my mom's side until food is given up. It's the funniest thing!

She also used to be quite the little rascal in her earlier years. One time we were having people over for a dinner party and while we were all sitting in the family room, she jumped up on the table and ate the fish off of 6 people's dinner plates!

We're so happy that Sparky has made it this long, when she was a lot younger she had to have corrective surgery two times on her back. It's amazing how strong-willed she is! When we moved to another state, she was right there in the car excited to go for a six-hour drive (much more excited than the rest of the family).

We think the secret to Sparky is Cocoa, the younger dachshund I talked about earlier. Cocoa really keeps her young, the two of them run around all day long playing.

Right now I'm working abroad, so I don't get to see either of my dachshunds, but this is a great runner up!

Alex - aren't the gray faced girls just the best? I have one myself but she's a spring chicken at 14.

Gray-faced shows that she's got life experience! Haha, I'm looking at the middle one of Sparky at our dining room table and thinking "Why doesn't she have gray hair?" This picture is at the most, 4 years old. I guess she didn't go gray until about 15 or so... still, she's old!
