Dachshunds in History: The Saga of Sgt. Wally D. Hund

There were no photos with this story, and this isn't a picture of 'Wally D. Hund.' But what a great dachshund tale! The author, James Lee Hutchinson, worked with Larry D. Bedford to provide the account as a guest columnist for Times-Mail out of Indiana: Sgt. Hund served with the 110 Military Police Platoon , Seventh Corps Headquarters, in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1960-64. Sgt. Larry D. Fortner of Bedford served four years in the same unit. He was well acquainted with Wally and provided the information for this story.
Sgt. Wally D. Hund was the platoon mascot and the commanding general’s dog. Hund was a black dachshund who had earned his stripes as a great morale builder. He proudly wore his sargeant’s chevrons on his uniform, which was a black MP arm band modified to attach to his collar and button under his long, fat belly.
Wally had a weight problem because he loved a lot of hamburgers and a little beer. He roamed the base all day and bunked in the MP barracks at night. Most all the 48 soldiers in the platoon gave him treats and spoiled him rotten. Everyone thought of him as their dog, but whenever he became too fat, the general would take him to his own quarters for a week or two of dieting. However, he was back on patrol as soon as he regained his normal figure and able to move without waddling.
Wally needed to be agile and able to move quickly to avoid jeeps and trucks moving about the base. But the dog continued to gain weight because he was receiving too many handouts of hamburgers and beer. Sometimes he became “tipsy” from too much beer. His friends were “killing him with kindness.”
It came to a head one summer day when the general happened to glance out his window and see Private First Class Elmer Dugan throwing rocks at Sgt. Hund. The general blew his stack and ordered a colonel to bring PFC Dugan to his office immediately. The soldier left the office without his one and only stripe. Private Dugan had been “busted” for throwing rocks. Dugan was only trying to get “Fat Wally” to move out of traffic, but it was three months before he got that lonely PFC stripe back.
Meanwhile, the general issued an order: “No one is to provide hamburgers or beer to Sgt. Wally D. Hund”
Wally moved into the general’s quarters again and eventually became a lean mean machine. In fact, he came so frisky that he ran off with a girlfriend who happened to cross his path. Sgt. Hund was AWOL for almost a week. Everyone was relieved when the bedraggled, but happy, dog returned to the base. But, he was in big trouble.
Sgt. Hund was not courtmartialed, but he did face a demotion ceremony.
By order of the general: “All men not on duty are to attend this ceremony in dress uniform.”
Sgt. Wally D. Hund stood calmly before the formation on that dark day.
His black MP uniform (arm band) was removed.
He stood naked before the troops as one of his stripes was ripped off. Sgt. Hund had been “busted.”
He left the parade ground as Corp. Wally D. Hund.
Of course, the general soon restored that lost stripe, and Wally continued his duties as morale builder.
I’ll bet every man in the 110 Military Police Platoon remembers that demotion ceremony in Stuttgart, Germany, 44 years ago.

How To Live To Be 100: Keep A Dachshund At Your Side And Drink A Little Gin

Meet handsome red longhair 'Wally,' and his human Gladys Taaffe, who hail from Chipperfield, England.  We send the warmest of birthday wishes to Mrs. Taaffe, who turns 100 years old today.  When asked by the Watford Observer what keeps her young at heart, the sprightly grandmother says:  “I used to have a sherry every day, but what keeps me going now, apart from my Dachshund Wally, is a good gin and tonic.”

Go Gladys (and Wally)!!

Breaking Wiener Dog News: Wally Gets His Own Blog

It's no secret that we love the adventures of 'Wally' in Kevin Fagan's Drabble cartoon strip, and now you can keep up with this smooth dude at his very own blog.  This is his very first post:

I am a wiener dog. We were bred to hunt badgers. We corner them and then bark real loud to alert our masters. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen a badger, so I just bark at everything to be on the safe side. Ok, time for a nap!

Wally has been pretty prolific in Drabble since the start of this new year, and as always, thanks goes out to our pretty friend from Slovenia, 'Princess Lea,' who has kept us up to date with his shenanigans.  Here are a few of his new ones:

Halloweenie Wannabe

Our pals 'Kirby' & 'Wally' write:

Hey Joey & Maggie!

Attached see a pic of "Gourdy" the Dachshund. He was a centerpiece for the Madison Area Dachshunds Group Halloweenie Party last Sunday in Wisconsin. We had 33 Doxies and 22 humans in attendance and had a blast! There's still time to make your own "Gourdy" for trick or treat!

Happy Memorial Day

Today we celebrate Memorial Day, a holiday which commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. We know us dachshunds have a bit of a tangled past in the United States, and even the UK, in regard to our German ancestry during times of great world wars, most notably World War One. Today though, we are going to look at how a 6-year-old Dachshund Lover spoke up to Henry Morgenthau, Jr., the Secretary of the Treasury, about how Dachshund imagery was being used to sell war bonds during World War Two. This article is via The New York Times, April 5, 1943:

MORGENTHAU DEFENDS DACHSHUND CARTOON

Calms Boy Protesting Use With Hitler's Face on It
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 4

A war bond advertisement caricaturing a dachshund with Hitler's face so enraged John Anson, a 6-year-old dachshund fancier, that he wrote to Secretary Morgenthau saying that "you ought to be ashamed of yourself."
Today the San Francisco boy had a reply bearing the great seal of the Secretary of the Treasury and apologizing to dachshunds in general.
"I asked him (Mr. Morgenthau) not to make fun of dachshunds or to make them unhappy by drawing Hitler's face on them," John said. "I told him I had two dachshunds and that they were nice little dogs and I loved them and that they were good Americans."
John felt better about it today after his mother read to him this reply, dated March 27, from Mr. Morgenthau's secretary:

Dear John:

The Secretary read your letter with a great deal of interest and he asked me to thank you for writing him.
He was sorry that you thought he was making fun of dachshunds, for Mrs. Morgenthau and he have a dachshund themselves and both are very fond of this breed of dog.
Of course, those pictures are made to catch the eye of people who read their papers hurriedly, and so the artist must try to express just one idea in a simple way with each picture.
Will you please tell your dachshund that there was no intention to insult them or the other members of their breed?

We're not sure if the above Dachshund imagery was used to sell war bonds, but it depicts the head of Hitler, as discussed in this post.

Dachshund Lover Henry Morgenthau, Jr., the 52nd United States Secretary of the Treasury.

Veterans Day 2012: Meet Schnapps and Booby Trap!

As American author and poet Maya Angelou quoted of our armed service veterans:  How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes! - we at The Long and Short of it All pause to recognize not only our veterans, but the Dachshunds who stood by their side.
Long-time readers of The Long and Short of it All know that we take extra time and effort to post military-inspired Dachshund photos and stories on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Today we bring you these historic WW2 photos that we scanned from the collection of our country cousin 'Rudy.'  His Dad is a big collector of WW2 memorabilia, and thought we might enjoy these.  Boy, do we!
The photos come from the collection of Mrs Harold G. Heinz, Carlinville, Illinois, and document the service of her husband, Harold.  Above is a close up of an incredibly handsome red smooth with a white chest who goes by the fantastic name 'Booby Trap!'
The captions noted here were written by Mrs. Heinz.  Click any photo to enlarge and admire.

A Dachshund Memorial Day, 2010

"Mousy," a four-month-old Dachshund puppy, is readied for his low level mission by his master, Staff Sergeant Robert E. Brumley, 25th Aerospace Defense Squadron (ADS).  "Mousy" was not too eager for the task at first, but he quickly settled down to save some Vandenberg Air Force Base missilemen and the taxpayers some money.

In honor of Memorial Day, 2010, we bring you this patriotic Dachshund tale.

A PUP NAMED "MOUSY," MISSILES, AND MONEY
by Capt. Thomas D. Boettcher, USAF
Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Air Force cost reduction monitors at this massive missile installation may give "Mousy," a four-month-old Dachshund, a special achievement award.
The 25th Aerospace Defense Squadron (ADS) had a problem.  One of the unit's jobs is to guide missiles launched from the aerospace complex, and one of their guidance antennas needed a cleaning job.  Hydraulic fluid had coated the tall tower, and it had to come off.
The solution was simple enough, Wash it.  However, the water hose had to be stretched across an active road.  The cleaning was more than a one day task, and since the road could not be closed, the hose would get smashed by heavy trucks.
About that time Mousy strolled by.  His master, Staff Sergeant Robert E. Brumley of the 25th ADS, requested the Dachshund's assistance, so he volunteered.  Being a rather young airman of sorts, Mousy had not yet learned the old soldier's warning, "Don't volunteer for anything."
The next few minutes brought him meaning for that admonition.  As SSgt. Brumley gingerly tied a small string loosely around the pup's neck, Mousy's look reflected his second thoughts.
Nor did he feel any better when the sergeant lifted him down into a tunnel.  "I'm too young for this kind of duty," he must have thought, and his pleading eyes vividly expressed such anxious sentiments.
He quickly relaxed, though, as any good airman would, as soon as he got a better understanding of his mission.
According to the briefing SSgt. Brumley gave him, he was to make a low pass through an 80-foot cable trough that tunneled under the road.  He was to make certain, of course, that he didn't lose the loosely fitting string.
Mousy took the problem in stride.  His low profile was more than a match for the confining task.  With a little encouragement he made his way quickly to the other end of the tunnel, his light but long load trailing behind.
There his master, SSgt. Brumley, was waiting for him.  After untying the string, the Air Force non-commissioned officer lifted the hero into the air to the cheers of the several fellows watching.
It was a great day for Mousy.  He had safely and swiftly piloted his cargo through the dark tunnel.  His was masterful navigation at its best.
Relishing his success, he sat quietly as the airmen then attached the string to a rubber hose.  They then began pulling the string and the attached hose through the tunnel.  Minutes later the hose emerged from the other end.
The water was then turned on, and the airmen began washing down the tower.  The water steadily flowed through the hose safely encased in the tunnel as the trucks roared overhead.
Mousy had saved the $22 hose.  It was a good day for U.S. taxpayers and the four-month-old Dachshund.
