March of the Dachshunds in Krakow, Poland!

It was the 15th Annual Marsz Jamników (Dachshund March) in Krakow, Poland, on Sunday, a HUGE event us American Dachshunds could only dream about attending. Thankfully, the Krakow Post provided these beautiful photos.

This year's winner of the costume contest featured a coarse-haired pup dressed up as an Egyptian pharaoh, royally escorted by his human companions, who donned Arabic dress and even had a soundtrack for his majesty's entrance. Read more at the Krakow Post.

See even more fantastic photots at this translated link of Radio Krakow.

Attention Polish Sausages

Are your bags packed? What looks to us as one of the largest Dachshund events in the world is right around the corner, Sunday, September 6th, 2009, in Krakow, Poland. That's right, it's the 2009 Marsz Jamników, or March of the Dachshunds, sponsored by Radio Krakow. From Polskie Radio:

The dachshund demonstration will be organized for the 15 time. Radio Krakow’s Agnieszka Kuczynska said she expected this year’s turnout would be record-breaking:
"This year’s interest has been exceptional – from Japan, Britain, Portugal. We’ve become accustomed to hosting the dogs from all over the world, but so far we haven’t had any from Japan."

Polish Sausages

Thousands of Dachshunds descended upon Krakow, Poland, on Sunday for what is arguably the largest Dachshund event in the world:  Marsz Jamników, or March of the Dachshunds.  Now in its 18th year, the annual event is sponsored by Radio Krakow and features a march through the streets of Krakow (with a marching band of course), a costume contest, and an art contest.  This years event also featured booths with a dog trainer, veterinarian, animal nutritionist, pet sitter, and even the police were on hand to advise on how to report animal cruelty.  The theme for this year's costume contest was "Dachshund the Traveller", and long dogs can be seen in dress from all over the world.  How we wish we could attend this event one year.

This year's event was covered well in the press, and thanks to some friends for sending in links.  See some fine photos and a video at The Daily Mail.

The winner of the costume contest was 'Borys', who hails from Nowy Targ in southern Poland.

And 'Enzo,' a long dog who hails all the way from Manchester, England also writes with a link to a fun video:

Hi Joey and Rowdy,

Greetings from Manchester!
We've just found this great video of the Krakow dachshund parade!  It's great to see Polish dachshunds dressed up to the nines and strutting their stuff.

Here's the link:  The Telegraph

Maybe we can encourage our Mancunian brethren to start a British sausage dog parade!

Marsz Jamników 2008

Huh? Marsz Jamników? Literally 'March of the Dachshunds,' this HUGE annual event took place on Sunday in Krakow, Poland. It looks like there were about a thousand dachshunds in attendance. Sponsored by Radio Krakow, there was a parade, a costume contest, a photo contest, and a dachshund literary contest. Book your plane tickets now for next year! The above photo was taken by sawb at flickr, and there are many more to see. Also check out the pics of the doxies and huge crowds, the photo contest winners, and attempt to read the essays at this translated version of Radio Krakow.

While we couldn't find any video of this year's event, don't miss this video from last year's Marsz Jamników. Holy cow, that's a lotta dachshunds.

More Photos From Marsz Jamników

michael jackson

Thanks to Long and Short of it All reader 'sawb' for letting us know that there are more photos from Marsz Jamników 2009, which took place last Sunday in Krakow, Poland, at Fotologia.
There were so many amazing photos, we couldn't decide which one to feature; but "Michael Jackson" stole our hearts. We're wondering if he can moonwalk like Henrietta can though.
