Reunited And It Feels So Good

Caleb Doughty, 9, cuddles with his Dachshund-mix Sky last Tuesday when she was found after she’d been missing 25 days. Sky’s crate was smashed when the Doughty’s Canebrake, Alabama home was struck by a March 2 tornado and Sky was either carried away by the storm or ran in panic.  Excerpt from The News Courier:

The 6-year-old dachshund-mix with one brown eye and one blue one had been adopted from the shelter Peace, Love & Animals.

“She’s my sister,” Caleb said. The 9-year-old home-schooled student considers the pets his siblings.

The family, as well as volunteers from Canebrake subdivision, immediately began searching the neighborhood and nearby woods.

They posted signs and placed notices on the Facebook page of the Canebrake Club.

Everyone wanted to help reunite the family with its pet. Someone with Animal Control donated humane traps, which capture a pet without harming it, and construction workers who were repairing damaged homes in the area set out dog treats in hopes of luring Sky.

Flo would receive calls of “Sky sightings,” with the farthest about a mile from the home. After a sighting at Hole 5 on the golf course, several men in golf carts met Flo to aid in a search. “They said, ‘We came to help you find your dog,’” Flo said. “The community was so nice.”

Then, she heard Sky was seen on a nearby street and set a trap in the garage of a home on the street behind her home.

The next morning, 25 days after the tornadoes, construction workers found Sky, tail wagging, inside the crate. 

The family drove over from the apartment in Madison where they are living until their home is repaired.

“We were just astonished,” Caleb said.

 Flo said, “We let Sky sleep with us that first night and she snored all night. She was so tired from her adventure.”

“I prayed and prayed, hoping the persistence would pay off,” Flo said, citing the Biblical parable of the persistent widow.

Dachshund UN Travels to the UK

Australian artist Bennett Miller's Dachshund UN traveling art installation has broken the boundaries of Australia, showing up Saturday as part of the live art Fierce Festival in Birmingham, England.  47 Dachshunds from all over the West Midlands participated in the event.  Excerpt from the Sunday Mercury:

The international body is often accused of having no teeth but there were plenty of gnashers on show in the reproduction assembly.
The mock UN meeting took place outside the Ikon Gallery, in Oozells Square. Exhibition bosses said the scale replica of a former UN office in Geneva was designed to be thought-provoking on the issue of human rights.
An exhibition spokesman said: “Dachshund UN is both a large scale architectural installation and a performance work that examines the role of the United Nations as a risk management organisation.

Good gosh.  We hate ending our week at The Long and Short of it All with such a sad story, but alas - we don't write the Dachshund news, we just report it.  Meet beautiful little 9-week-old 'Lola,' who hails from Mobile, Alabama.  She was thrown from a balcony of  a third-floor apartment on Tuesday, and is seen here just yesterday - still in very serious condition at South Alabama Spay & Neuter Center.  Excerpt from al.com:

The small dog appeared weak, only standing for several seconds, but responding to kisses and other shows of affection.

“She’s not out of the woods yet. She definitely a miracle,” said Dr. Jeni Knizley who is treating Lola. “She has had the most wonderful attitude. Even when we were trying to hook up a catheter, she would look up at us and wag her tail. That kind of love and devotion, (it) is heartbreaking when you see it. She had a strong will to be here and is a really sweet, sweet precious baby.”
Kendria Dexter, the puppy’s owner, was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. She was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail about 6:14 p.m. Wednesday and was released about 8 p.m. with bail set at $1,000, records show.
“I did not have good expectations for the dog,” Knizley said. “I would probably have given her a 10 to 15 percent chance of making it.”
The puppy “was in very, very critical condition when she arrived,” Knizley said, adding that Lola had trouble breathing, couldn’t stand, and “was in a coma-type state.” The impact caused internal injuries including liver damage, she said.
“She is eating, but not keeping much down,” she said.
“I can’t say she’s out of the woods yet, but I can say she miraculously not a single broken bone, probably due to her age.” Knizley said.

Beyonce the Dachshund Mix: World's Smallest Puppy Dog?

Thanks to the many folks who sent us emails and comments this week about little 'Beyonce,' the Dachshund-Chihuahua mix puppy who may be the smallest dog on the planet!  Beyonce was born March 8 to a rescue dog that was found abandoned, wandering the streets of San Bernardino, California. At birth, she weighed just 1 ounce and could fit into a teaspoon. Her caretakers say she's one of the smallest puppies ever born full-term - and she has captured the attention of the world.  She was given the name 'Beyonce' because of the singer's song I'm A Survivor. 
Little Beyonce has been busy this week for such a young gal - traveling to New York to appear with Dachshund Lover George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America, and in the above interview for Associated Press.
We hope the little girl stays healthy and lives a long happy life with a wonderful home!

The marketing of homeless pets actually plays an important role in saving them.
One day at the shelter, I met someone who said, "Can I hire you to photograph my dog?" I thought: You mean, for pay? Well ... okay. One of the pictures from that shoot ended up on a magazine and started getting attention.
I've always loved animals. I grew up with a miniature dachshund named Duchess who lived to be seventeen. I've always loved animals, but it didn't occur to me until that moment that I could make a career out of this. It hasn't always been easy. You have to hustle. And the economy hasn't helped.
How did you get the idea to take pictures of dogs underwater?
It seems to me that water gives dogs the opportunity to explore their wild instincts. That's why it's so exciting for them and so much fun for them to be under the water, even if they've never been near the water before. This shines through in the photographs. You can see in the pictures that these very expressive moments are happening to the dogs underwater: moments which can be very silly or very focused or even very terrifying. I think that's what the deal is with the water.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Jennifer Lawrence Locked in Basement With Dachshunds

Thanks so much to our friend Clara and her boy 'Oscar' from Portugal for writing in about actress Jennifer Lawrence's appearance on Tuesday's David Letterman.  Ms. Lawrence is poised to hit super-stardom with today's release of the movie Hunger Games.  Or maybe she's poised to hit super-stardom because of this story of her, her brothers, and their three Dachshunds.  The whole interview is entertaining, but the Dachshund bits start at about 7 minutes in.  Watch it quick before "the man" takes it down.  Via People magazine:

The actress, who stars in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the dystopian teen trilogy about a televised battle to the death, told David Letterman on the Late Show that her two older brothers roughhoused with her growing up.

"I've got scars all over my body," she said. "The best part – they would fight each other over who could fight me."

There was one ritual in particular that was especially agonizing. "When I was doing the gymnastics phase, they used to pin my feet back behind my head – I can't do this anymore – and then they would get our dachshunds and put peanut butter all over my face," she explained. "We had three dachshunds and then the dogs would do this [go crazy licking]. And then they'd shut the door, lock me in the basement with dachshunds."

"And now – karma! – I go on talk shows and tell everybody," she added. "I win!"

Letterman, who feigned a therapy session throughout the interview, said, "I'm going to make two calls, Jennifer. The first one will be to Amnesty International, and the second one will be to Dick Cheney. I think we have something here. It might replace water boarding, that little dachshund deal."

Dachshund Attacked in Own Home by Pit Bull

Meet poor little 18-month-old 'Mac,' who hails from Watertown, New York.  A loose Pit Bull charged into his house and started attacking him last weekend.  Luckily his Dad came to his rescue, stabbing and killing the Pit Bull.  Not exactly a fun-filled story to be sharing on a wonderful Friday, but it just goes to show you that you can never let your guard down, Dachshund Brethren.  We hope that Mac has a complete recovery from this horrific ordeal. 

Simon Cowell Likens Co-Star's Relationship to Family Dachshund

David Walliams, (right), a British comedian, writer, and actor, is joining Simon Cowell (left), as a judge on the 6th season of Britain's Got Talent this year.  The bromance they've developed is apparently causing some jealousy issues with Williams' wife, model Lara Stone.  Via What's On TV:

David said: "Lara is jealous because every time I come back from work I'm 'Oh, guess what Simon did today'."

David joked he had started calling his wife "Simon" in bed, adding: "The first few times she didn't mind, but then wearing the mask...".

But Simon said the relationship was more like the one he used to have with his parent's pet dog.

He said: "My mum and dad used to have a Dachshund dog and as it got a bit older it used to get on my leg occasionally and hump my leg... that kind of is our relationship".

Well... we never!

The Dachshund and the Kibble

There was once upon a time a Prince who wanted a Dachshund, but the dog must be a true Dachshund. So he traveled through the whole world to find one, but there was always something against each. There were plenty of Long and Short dogs, but he could not find out if they were true Dachshunds. In every case there was some little defect, which showed the genuine article was not yet found. So he came home again in very low spirits, for he had wanted very much to have a true Dachshund. One night there was a dreadful storm; there was thunder and lightning and the rain streamed down in torrents. It was fearful! There was a knocking heard at the Palace gate, and the old King went to open it.

There stood a Dachshund outside the gate; but oh, in what a sad plight she was from the rain and the storm! The water was running down her coat and into the webs of her paws and out again. And yet she said she was a true Dachshund!

‘Well, we shall soon find out!’ thought the old Queen. But she said nothing, and went into the sleeping-room, and laid a small piece of kibble on the bottom of a dog bed. Then she put twenty dog beds on top of the kibble, and twenty eider-down quilts on the top of the dog beds. And this was the bed in which the Dachshund was to sleep.

The next morning she was asked how she had slept.

‘Oh, very badly!’ said the Dachshund. ‘I scarcely closed my eyes all night.  I was forever turning in circles and pawing and fluffing the eider-down quilts! I am sure I don’t know what was in the bed. I laid on something so hard that my whole body is black and blue. It is dreadful!’

Now they perceived that she was a true Dachshund, because she had felt the kibble through the twenty dog beds and the twenty eider-down quilts.

No dog but a true Dachshund could be so sensitive.

So the Prince adopted her, for now he knew that at last he had got hold of a true Dachshund. And the piece of kibble was put into the Royal Museum, where it is still to be seen if no little Dachshund has eaten it. Now this is a true story.
