Moxie the Doxie: Starving Dachshund Rescued From Portland Streets

Meet poor 'Moxie,' the Doxie found starving to death near a Popeye's Restaurant in Northeast Portland, Oregon on December 1st.  A Good Samaritan took her to the Oregon Humane Society; she weighed just 4.7 pounds.

“On a body condition scale of one to nine, this dog was a one,” OHS Veterinarian Dr. Zarah Hedge said of the Dachshund. Its ribs and spine were visible and its temperature was eight degrees below normal.

Anyone with information on Moxie's owner is asked to call the OHS.  Moxie is expected to gain weight and be up for adoption in a few weeks.

Find out more at KGW.com.  We're hoping that this sweet girl gets her warm forever home in time for the holidays.

THAT IS AWFUL !! this makes me cry and mad at the same time. Anyone who could let a sweet dog get in this condition deserves a kick in the ass.
Even if people can't afford to care for their animals they should take them to the Humane Society. I pray that Moxie Doxie gets the best home a dog could ever dream for. Poor baby, May God bless her with great improved health.

I hope the owners are found and charged with animal cruelty in the max degree and never allowed pets again. Good luck little Moxie, hope you get a loving home that deserves you. We are all crossing our paws for ya.

I was corresponding with my ex-who now-lives-in-Portland while reading this and just started crying so much and sent him the link.

I hope this little darlin survives and has a happy home.

I find it so hard to believe that SOMEONE had not seen this poor pup before the person who found her brought her in. I am so upset over how ANYONE could walk away and not help this puppy. She looks like my Dora and my heart broke into. She deserves a home like my dogs have....one where they own a king size bed and are treated like Queens. Please keep us posted....I doubt I will be able to stop thinking about this puppy.

Oh this breaks my heart :( I pray this little guy recovers and finds a loving home. What awful people could do this? So sad.

We're hoping at this point that this girl can gain weight again, and hope that she doesn't have some deficiency like a couple of the emaciated Dachshunds who have been found over the years have had - like Joanie: http://dachshundlove.blogspot.com/search?q=joanie

Hoping that Moxie will blossom like Sassa did: http://dachshundlove.blogspot.com/2009/01/story-of-sass.html

Oh, how I would love the privilege of helping to return Moxie to physical and emotional health!

Hi Joey and Maggie, I was thinking the thing. We can never forget little Joan of Arc. RIP. I have had some little rescues come in (not as badly malnursished as Moxie) but bad enough. I would give them Ensure (strawberry and Vinilla flavors) to lap up and it helped open their stomachs and appitite to eat more. Hope they have a good suppliment to give her to help her build up the nutrients she is lacking. We are praying for you Moxie. There is a good home out there for you, so get well soon.

Shocking that nothing was done before she reached this pathetic state. My heart just breaks when I hear of stories like this. She deserves a loving home ASAP, and the people who allowed this to happen deserve jail.

This makes me EXTRA unhappy that this happened in my old hometown of Portland. I can't believe it. Please keep us posted on this sweet girl.

Please keep us posted. I have faith that someone will adopt her real quick. OH - I would love to fatten her up. Just look at that face. Who did she ever hurt in her little life?? Why does this happen. I wish they could caach the person who did this and put them on a diet like hers has been. I hope her kidneys and liver aren't destroyed by this.

Update on Moxie (from the doctor who cared for her) - she did great, gained weight and got to a good body condition and within a day of being placed up for adoption was adopted to a loving home. Great ending for a great little dog :)
