Police Shoot Family's 11-Year-Old Dachshund in Danville, Virginia

To serve and protect? We'd be gathering our Dachshund and dog friends and their humans for a protest right now. The news is grim out of Danville, Virginia, where a family says that police shot and killed their much-loved family member, 11-year-old red smooth 'Killer' on Monday night. The family states that while his name may have been 'Killer,' he was anything but.

"He'd never bit anyone. He would bark, He did his fair share of barking. He had a big bark for a little dog," human Tawaiin Harper said.
But on Monday night, the Harpers say that barking stopped because a police officer, making a stop next door, shot and killed their pet.
"He said, I had to shoot your dog, he was barking at me and that was that," Angela Harper said.
The Harpers have had Killer for 11 years, and losing him, is killing them.
"He was like a member of the family. He had his part on the Christmas tree and his presents under the Christmas tree. It's like a member of the family," Angela said.

Watch the video (we had trouble embedding it) and read more of this horrific story at ABC13.

Just goes to show that even police officers shouldn't carry guns. What a horrible waste for this family grieving for their pet. Since when is barking a crime punishable by death?

This is heartbreaking. They had no business shooting such a small and obviously harmless. Words escape me.

this was my hometown. The officer has such poor judgement ,he shoiuld be fired. It was a working clas neighborhood,so nothing will happen unless everyone gets involved and gets this person out of th PD.

I got Mike Malloy to read this story on the radio tonight. Maybe enough pressure will be generated to get this officer fired.

In addition to being outraged and saddened by this story, I'm appalled at how comfortable the officer was in using his gun to kill. Allowing someone with no understanding of excessive use of force to continue "policing" a community sounds pretty dangerous to everyone, animal and human.

Am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend! How unkind of your neighbor. Did the officer actually shoot your poor dog with his duty weapon? I think you need to get a lawyer and get to the bottom of this, not just for your dog's sake, but for the safety of everyone in your community, because this is not proper conduct for a police officer.

An Irag war vet with PTSD and a gun just how stupid is the Danville Police Dept? Gee most police men have blankets in the trunk..and many have snausages for dogs and lollypops for kids.. I am concerned pets and people will be tasered without cause ,just like the 72 yea old great granmother in Texas, but they may survive at least.

Honestly, a dog shouldn't be killed just because it's barking. It's a dog. Dogs bark. That officer's so dumb. Poor little Killer. He didn't deserve to die because he was doing what a dog is supposed to do.

This is awful it made me cry. to think that a person such as a police officer, that people admire, would do such a thing. I hope that this officer is fired. The animal cruelty people do work with the law. What a selfish thing to do.whoever did this is cruel.MAY THE DOG REST IN PEACE.
