New York's Twentieth Annual Dachshund Octoberfest

Congratulations to New York's Dachshund Friendship Club for hosting their 20th Annual Dachshund Octoberfest on Saturday in Washington Square Park in New York City.  This bi-annual meetup is an Institution in Dachshund Meetups, of which Dachshund meetups all over the country and world are modeled after and compared to.  It has brought some of the best photos and videos of Dachshund gatherings on the net.  Excerpt from Washington Square News:

"We do it twice a year as a social gathering for owners and dogs to interact and also see all the different varieties of dachshund, such as wire, smooth and long-haired," said Adrian Milton, who manages the event as part of the Dachshund Friendship Club.
At 1 p.m., the group joined together to sing "Dachs Song" by Paul de Vries, a song that encompasses all things loved by dachshund owners. The final lines read "Dachsie, meine dachsie, the best canine under the sun, called 'wiener' or 'sausage' or 'hot dog,' we know that you're number one."

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Roxie, Security Doxie

Ain't nothin' gonna get past a Dachshund, much less a beautiful gal on the job like red smooth 'Roxie,' "Security Doxie."  Thanks so much to Roxie for writing in!  She writes:

Hi Joey and Maggie!

My mom LOVES your site! She goes to it everyday to see all of the Doxie posts, and, we were all worried about you, Joey, but really glad to hear you are on the mend! a bow-wow to that.

I was lucky to go to work with her recently. Isn't it nice that her work has a "Doggie Day"? Well, this was my turn to get to go with her (yea!). My brother, Coco Beane got to stay at home and snooze. Anyways, she had to do some makeup styling for a video shoot at work so I got to tag along with her. Boy, she kept telling me what a good girl I was being and I was. Between takes, she had to sit in one of the shots so the guys could adjust the lighting, well, before you knew it, I was in her lap and then posing for the camera! She works in the creative department and one of her friends put me in a special ad just for me. I also forgot to tell you, she works for a video security company so I guess you could say that I was Top Security Dog for the day!

Au contraire, Monsieur Wilde, us Smooths especially love to talk of our hatred of the rain and the cold, and our love of a good sun bath, it's so much more interesting than say.....politics, or anything really! 

Thanks to Portland, Maine's WCHS6 Meteorologist Kevin Carson for the shout out to us in his weather report on Thursday, here's an excerpt:

Simple headline but that about sums about our weather over the next 36 hours or so. The remnants of Nicole are streaming up the eastern seaboard and bringing heavy rain and flooding. The good news: we won't see nearly as much rain as the Carolinas. The bad news: we are still looking at a few inches. The long and the short of it (also a great blog by the way...I am the proud parent of a mini dachshund and read it almost daily) is that the heaviest rain will tend to sail to our west...into Vermont and western New Hampshire, so the 4"+ amounts should stay there.

He goes on to say:

Ok good luck with the rain over the coming days. Authors note: Yes I referred to myself as a "parent" of my dog. I don't have kids so I'm "one of those" when it comes to my little furry friend. He is my son, I am his dad...and yes, he has clothes.

That's Mr. Carson's handsome black and tan longhair above, we think his name is 'Reeses!'

29 Dachshunds and 1 Pomeranian Rescued from New Hampshire Home

They are as cute as can be, but covered with fleas.  29 Dachshunds and 1 Pomeranian were rescued from a Deerfield, New Hampshire home on September 17th.  The dogs were voluntarily given up, and some may be available for adoption today.  Excerpt from the Union Leader:

Thirty dogs have been rescued from a Brown Road home that an investigating police officer described as “not a liveable condition for people or animals.”
Deerfield police officer Mike Lavoie said someone looking for a lost dog saw a group of four or five dogs inside cages underneath a tarp-covered carport.
Lavoie said between 10 and 15 dogs were found in a camper on the property while the remaining were found inside the house.
“The whole place was covered with animal waste and fleas,” said Steve Sprowl of the New Hampshire Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA).

Dachshund Scrubbie!

Move over rubber duckie, there's a new kid in town:  Donny Dachshund!  Thanks so much to our pals 'Oscar' and 'Hans' for sending this in.  They write:

We are so glad to hear that Joey continues a smooth recovery (pun intended). He is truly a testament to the stubbornness and resilient nature of the Dachshund!


So the other day Mom was in Wal-Mart, and look at what she found! "Donny the Dachshund" bath scrubbie! Isn't he cute! Notice the little pink tongue. We aren't huge fans of bath time, but wiener dogs make everything better. :)

Holy Moly - Bubba Sets Another Mole-Hunting Record!

Our favorite mole exterminator, 'Bubba,' who hails from Fremont, Nebraska, is still on the case - perfecting his craft to break his own record year after year.  Now at 11-years-old, it's obvious that age is not slowing him down - he's killed 89 moles this year!  Excerpt from the Fremont Tribune:

Another year, another record for Bubba.
Bubba, a miniature dachshund owned by Dale and Betty Reandeau, has killed 89 moles so far this year at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont, one more than his previous high of 88 set last year.
"He's trying to keep the mole population down," Dale Reandeau said.
Bubba is going to the cemetery twice a day for walks - and a little mole hunting.
"He's a big hunter," Reandeau said.
Bubba's work helps keep the cemetery grounds looking nicer since moles kill grass and make the ground lumpy.
Bubba has even branched his service out to other areas. Reandeau said Bubba is taking his mole-hunting skills to Davenport Park.

Hollywood Legend and Dachshund Lover Tony Curtis Passes

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of actor Tony Curtis, who died in his Las Vegas area home yesterday.  Mr. Curtis was 85.  In addition to his wife, Jill VandenBerg, Mr. Curtis is survived by Kelly Lee Curtis and actress Jamie Lee Curtis, his two daughters with Janet Leigh; Alexandra Curtis and Allegra Curtis, his two daughters with Christine Kaufmann; and a son, Benjamin Curtis, with Leslie Allen.

He is also survived by his lovable black and tan smooth Dachshund, 'Bronx.'  Thanks for the memories Mr. Curtis.

Frankenmuth Brewery Adds Frankie's Root Bier to Repertoire

A smooth blend of sassafras, vanilla and licorice flavors, with just the right amount of carbonation - just another reason to stop by the Frankenmuth Brewery the next time you're in Michigan.  The new root beer features the brewery's unofficial mascot on the label:  Frankie the Dachshund.  Via mlive:

The design and the story that goes along with it originates with one of the brewery’s earlier owners, John Geyer. As brewery legend would have it, Geyer owned a brood of purebred Dachshunds and used the image of Frankie, his top dog, in ads, signs and packaging for the locally-brewed beer.

“Why not embrace it?” brewmaster Jeff Coon said. “I’ve been coming up here my entire life, and I love the history behind it. We are tying ourselves with the past.”

Frankie has become the unofficial mascot for the brewery, Coon said, showing up on bottles, menus and tables with the words “Dog-gone good craft beer.”

Dachshund Relaxation: Piebed

A bed fit for a Piebald

We can't thank our MidWest Dachshund Rescue friend Alison enough for surprising your Long and Short of it All host 'Joey' with this new bed to help in his recovery after surgery.  He LOVES it.  Joey was so excited when Dad removed it from the packaging, and it complements his piebaldism perfectly.  He rolled around in it immediately, tail wagging at full speed.  "It's a big giant ME!," he must have thought.  Alison made this herself!

Joey continues to recover well after his long ordeal.  He's still getting adjusted on his medications for Addison's Disease.  The daily prednisone he takes is causing him to drink and pee a lot, but we're hoping to reduce his dose some to alleviate this.  He had electrolytes drawn last Saturday to check and make sure they are OK, as his monthly DOCP injections control them.  They are looking good, but he is probably going to need a dose reduction of his DOCP as well.  Otherwise, he is a happy, hungry, and active little guy.  We're so thankful.

Some Hope and Some Despair

In the "hope" department, it's a sad day when your Dachshund is stolen, but a happy one when she is found.  That's what happened to these one and three year-old girls who hail from Newington Close, Southend, UK.  Their cute Dachshund puppy 'Rolo' was stolen from inside their home last Saturday evening.  Their Mom received an anonymous tip where the puppy could be found, and it was right around the corner from them!  After the police refused to help get the puppy back, stating that "it wasn't a priority," a family friend knocked on the door of the house and stated "I believe you have my neighbour’s dog and I would like to take her back to them."  Read all about it at Echo News. 

And in the dreaded "despair" department, our hearts go out to the family and friends of 3-year-old 'Minnie,' seen here, who passed on Monday while undergoing a routine teeth cleaning at Banfield Pet Hospital in Cape Coral, Florida.  It's every Dachshund and dog lover's worst nightmare that something might happen from anesthesia during a teeth cleaning, and sometimes it does.  Rest in Peace little girl.  You were loved.  Read more at the News-Press.

Here's one for the ladies: Ricky Alvarez, the owner of Ricky Bakery in Coral Gables, Florida, poses for a calendar shoot with his four Dachshunds.  The calendar, which will feature local business owners, will benefit the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department shelter.  Alvarez says:  "A lot of animals are put to sleep, are abandoned and mistreated. I hope this calendar brings awareness of how great it is to love animals.''

'Dexter,' a 7-year-old Dachshund owned by John and Mindy McFarland of Newtown, Connecticut, was born without eyes due to a genetic disorder — but his sense of smell is keen. Here, Dexter shows great concern for 'Smudge,' the month-old kitten that has come into foster care at the McFarland home, as the kitten receives a bottle of formula.  The McFarland household is full of special needs animals who need lots of love and care.  "Dexter will sit in front of the crate and jump up and down, hoping we will take the kittens out," said Ms McFarland. Jump Start Your Monday

Sydney Savage, 9, is assisted by her mother Stacey Savage after falling over Saturday when 'Weenie,' her aunt Gloria Kost's Dachshund, leaped forward prior to the beginning of the “Running of the Wieners” during the Beardstown Fall Fun Festival in Beardstown, Illinois.  Weenie is a real go-getter!  Forty-three dogs raced to raise $304 to go toward the Dog Pen, a local no-kill animal shelter.  Way to go! Source.
