Christmas Fun in the Sun Down Under

'Mason' and 'Kai' picked up their fashionable holiday attire at their local K-Mart.

Dozens of Dachshunds recently got together to enjoy the warm weather and celebrate Christmas Down Under at the annual Dachshunds in Paradise holiday meet-up in the Gold Coast, Australia.  Dachshunds in Paradise is a local meet-up group which "gathers to celebrate their petite pups and to raise money to help find homes for neglected dachshunds."

Wieners Wieners Everywhere

It's Friday, and it's time to sing!  Via NYU Local:  Wiener dogs stormed Washington Square in New York last Saturday for the Spring Fiesta of the Dachshund Friendship Festival. The gathering let the little guys run with dogs of their own size; and with numbers came power. So many dachshunds played around the fountain that Shakespeare in the Square’s Taming of the Shrew couldn’t actually go on in the park. The performance was moved to NYU Stern’s Gould Plaza. But hey, we’ll take wagging wieners over Tischies any time. The climax of the day’s event involved everyone lifting their wieners in the air to sing the Dachsong.  Go ahead.  Click that link and sing!

Are you singing yet?

2013 South Beach Dachshund Winter Festival

Hundreds of long dogs and their humans descended on Lummus Park in Miami Beach, Florida, on Saturday for the 11th annual South Beach Dachshund Winterfest. Activities included Dachshund Fortune Telling, Doxie Funhouse (tunnels, Odor-ama, scary badgers!), a Talent Show, Singing of the Dach Song and The Grand March! We're so jealous.

Key West Dachshund Walk 2012

It must be the beginning of a New Year, because as sure as that big ball dropped in New York City (ball...did someone say BALL?!), Dachshunds converged in Key West, Florida, on Monday for the 8th Annual Key West Dachshund Walk. This year's event attracted about 200 long, short, and agile canines, and about 30 impostors!

Finding A Few Good Dachshunds: A Meeting Of Potential Delegates

We're so proud, some folks actually DO read our little blog here!  Thanks so much for sticking with us over the years and giving us a shout out.  We hinted a few weeks ago that Dachshund UN, Australian artist Bennett Miller's traveling art installation, was about to make its way to the North American continent as a part of The 2013 World Stage season at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre.  Some Dachshunds took note, and have already auditioned to take part!  We're so jealous of you Canadians, you're gonna have such a great time.

From the video notes:  Last Sunday a handful of owners and their pups met with the creator of Dachshund UN, Bennett Miller, at Paws Way. By now you may have heard that the performance that "stretches the boundaries of ... live art" will be making it's North American debut here at Harbourfront Centre as part of the 2013 World Stage season. The owners were very excited to meet Bennett and potentially be a part of this exciting show.

Find out more about the event at the Harbourfront Centre.

A Note From World Famous Dachshund Rosco P. Dog

Thanks so much to 'Rosco P. Dog' for writing in about his big television debut for this weekend's Oktoberfest in Lee's Summit, Missouri.  If you live nearby, you're gonna wanna go - what else could you possibly be doing this weekend?  From Rosco:

Hello Joey and Rowdy,

I hope all is well going into our favorite month Dachtober.

Our local Chamber of Commerce has an Oktoberfest featuring three Dachshund events, a costume contest, a look-a-like contest, and a best trick contest. The local news channel NBC 41 Action news invited myself and two of my Dachshund buddies to come to the station and show off our costumes.

I am the handsome doggie on the right in the dapper tux. I went as 00Dachshund, secret agent dog, with a license to bark. My daddy even got labeled a Bond Girl to my James Bond outfit (he is not quite sure how to take that yet). My two buddies went as a pirate and a penguin.

Have a great month,

Winnipeg Wienerfest!

Thanks to our pretty roving reporter 'Miss Georgia' for sending in the scoop about last weekend's Winnipeg Wienerfest!  She writes:

Hi Joey & Rowdy!

We read your blog every day and love seeing all the great Dachshund stories from around the world!

Mommy, Daddy and I spent this past Saturday at the annual Wienerfest and Dachshund Races in our hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada!  It was a windy day, but that didn't stop us doxies from having a fabulous time socializing, begging for hot dogs (ironically!) and raising money for our local Humane Society! Mommy attached one of the pictures from the site - I'm the little black and tan in the bottom left corner, proudly sporting my Winnipeg Jets NHL sweater to keep warm and begging for hot dog from strangers  :)

Polish Sausages

Thousands of Dachshunds descended upon Krakow, Poland, on Sunday for what is arguably the largest Dachshund event in the world:  Marsz Jamników, or March of the Dachshunds.  Now in its 18th year, the annual event is sponsored by Radio Krakow and features a march through the streets of Krakow (with a marching band of course), a costume contest, and an art contest.  This years event also featured booths with a dog trainer, veterinarian, animal nutritionist, pet sitter, and even the police were on hand to advise on how to report animal cruelty.  The theme for this year's costume contest was "Dachshund the Traveller", and long dogs can be seen in dress from all over the world.  How we wish we could attend this event one year.

This year's event was covered well in the press, and thanks to some friends for sending in links.  See some fine photos and a video at The Daily Mail.

The winner of the costume contest was 'Borys', who hails from Nowy Targ in southern Poland.

And 'Enzo,' a long dog who hails all the way from Manchester, England also writes with a link to a fun video:

Hi Joey and Rowdy,

Greetings from Manchester!
We've just found this great video of the Krakow dachshund parade!  It's great to see Polish dachshunds dressed up to the nines and strutting their stuff.

Here's the link:  The Telegraph

Maybe we can encourage our Mancunian brethren to start a British sausage dog parade!

2012 Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby

RUN WIENER DOGS, RUN!  Thanks so much to Sheree Revilla for writing in with wonderful photos from the 4th Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby, which took place on May 26th at Thomas Square Park in Honolulu, Hawaii!  If only we lived a little closer.  She writes:

Aloha Joey and Rowdy!

Just sharing a few pics from our Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby on Saturday May 26th, Memorial Day weekend. We are always of course the main attraction at the Hawaiian Humane Society Canine Game Day where doxies monopolize the park with their loud barks and attention getting sweetness. For goodness sake every year it gets bigger with over 150 island doxies participating this year. It was a blast but now we are exhausted. So happy Memorial Day to everyone and hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend….

Glens Falls Wiener Walk!

Video by youtuber MrFightingFriday

Look at all the Dachshunds who showed up to honor veterans by marching in the Glens Falls-Queensbury Memorial Day parade on Monday!  It's the fourth year that Dachshunds have participated in the event, which took place in Glens Falls, New York.  See lots of photos at the Glens Falls Wiener Walk Facebook Page.

WEE-ners against NATO

It's been total chaos in Chicago, the world headquarters of The Long and Short of it All, over the last four days with the NATO summit and all of its protesters here.  We couldn't be happier now that it's over.
But this red smooth wanted to make sure her bark was heard at Saturday's Cross-Town Bark Around Fundraiser sponsored by MidWest Dachshund Rescue.  And it was - she won the costume contest as judged by WGN radio personality John Williams.
We had an awesome time at this year's event - there were over 1,400 humans in attendance and heaven knows how many Dachshunds - easily over 400.  Fifty volunteers kept the event running smoothly.  We're hoping lots of hard cash was raised to help the needy Dachshunds that come into rescue.

See 125 super photos from the event by Jill Wait Pet Photography on Facebook.

Joey and Maggie Featured in Local Paper for MWDR Fundraiser

Memory Lane

We're so proud of our crew (and we miss our Miss Maggie very much).  Regular readers of The Long and Short of it All may remember this photo we took at last year's “Cross Town Bark Around,” a fundraiser and social presented by Midwest Dachshund Rescue (MWDR).  Well, it was selected in a local edition of the Chicago Tribune to promote this year's event!   We couldn't be happier!
If you live in the Midwest, you do NOT want to miss this year's event which is taking place on Saturday, May 19th, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.  You will be shocked and amazed at the amazing raffles, prizes, and activities.  Via Trib Local:

The event will be inside Buildings 2 and 3 and will be held, rain or shine. The “Doxie Dash Wiener Races” will begin at 2 p.m. All activities, except for the races, will be inside the buildings. Dachshunds, dachshund mixes and their families and friends are invited. Dachshund lovers without dogs are also welcome.
Activities in addition to the Doxie Dash include raffles and silent auctions, featuring Cubs and White Sox tickets, theme park passes, dining gift cards and overnight hotel stays. The event also will feature a Doxie “Kiss-Off,” Doxie Cake Walk, Best Costume and Best “Peanut Butter Licker” Contests and Paw Painting on Canvas for the little Pawcassos. The Doxie General Store will feature one-of-a-kind dog-related items. There also will be “Ask The Trainer” and “Teach A Dog A Trick” booths, a bake sale, nail trims, wiener games and photos with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Pedal Car.
All proceeds benefit rescued dachshunds whose veterinary care, spaying and neutering, food, medication and other needs prior to adoption are funded by MWDR.
Admission is $5 for adults, which includes one free hot dog. Registration is not required for admission but advance registration is necessary for Doxie Dash Wiener Race participants.

Dachshund Spring Fiesta 2012

Hundreds of Dachshunds and Dachshundists descended on Washington Square Park in New York City on Saturday for the 2012 Dachshund Spring Fiesta. The event, now in its 21st year, is our sign that Spring has truly arrived!   Excerpt via the Washington Square News:

Washington Square Park was once again overrun by the hottest dogs in town on Saturday as part of the Dachshund Friendship Club's biennial event, Dachshund Day. The Dachshund Spring Fiesta is a free public event in which dachshund owners come out by the hundreds to socialize and show off their very own wiener dogs.
Adrian Milton, co-founder of the Dachshund Friendship Club, explained the origins of the event.
"We rescued a dachshund [and] it would whimper whenever it saw another dachshund, so we just put a sign up saying, 'Dachshund lovers meet in Washington Square Park,'" Milton said.
He said the event usually attracts around 400 people and 300 dogs, but this year may have seen less attendance due to poor weather speculations.
