Dachshund Fed LSD by Naked Couple is Hit by Car

In the News We Don't Like to Report Department, a Dachshund named 'Oscar' who hailed from Snellville, Georgia, has met his fate after his naked humans fed him LSD that was placed into a gummy worm.  You can't make this stuff up, which is why this story has gone viral:

A dog was hit by a car Sunday night after its owners gave it a gummy worm laced with LSD, police said.
Snellville police Capt. Harold Thomas said Monday that officers initially responded to the Pinehurst Road home of Nicholas Modrich and Jamie Hughes at about 8 p.m. after neighbors reported seeing the couple running down the street naked.
When police arrived, Modrich and Hughes opened the door and were "obviously on something," Thomas said. Modrich was wearing nothing but socks and Hughes was topless as they told police they had given LSD to "Oscar" and he was missing.
Oscar turned out to be their daschund.
Officers quickly learned that Oscar had been struck by car on a nearby street when Modrich's mother and younger brother showed up at the scene. The dog, whose condition was unclear Monday, was taken by Gwinnett County Animal Control after it bit them.
The suspects will likely face drug charges and officials are weighing reckless conduct and animal cruelty charges, Thomas said.
"I've been doing this for 31 years," Thomas said. "This is a first."

Initial reports indicated that Oscar was taken for follow-up veterinary care and was recovering, but reports today indicate that he has been euthanized.

Boniface, The Deep-Diving Dachshund

Thanks to the many readers who sent in links to news stories about 'Boniface,' the Russian Diving Dachshund.  We got so many emails about the story, we can't begin to thank everyone, but trust us, we're humbly grateful for the story tips!  It's funny how odd little stories like this blow up to be global news.  We first featured Boniface back on May 6, 2010 with little fanfare, but once The Associated Press sends out a news story, it sure goes viral - which happened over the weekend.  And it's great when Dachshunds get such global attention!
Here's the breakdown from the AP:

MOSCOW — Any dachshund owner knows the feisty breed rarely backs off from a challenge, but one in Russia is taking that reputation to new heights — or depths.
The dog named Boniface is learning how to scuba dive.
Owner Sergei Gorbunov, a professional diver in the Pacific Coast city of Vladivostok had a diving suit complete with helmet made for the dog and is teaching him the tricks of the trade.
In a recent demonstration, Boniface barked eagerly as Gorbunov readied the equipment and uncomplainingly endured being hung upside-down as Gorbunov fitted the suit on him.
Once underwater, he seemed to have a different outlook, emitting some high-pitched whines.
Gobunov says, "Underwater, I don't think he experiences any stress."

Now honestly, we're not the biggest fans of this story - we're not so sure that deep under water is the place for a Dachshund to be.  Sure, we might dive down a little depth to fetch a ball or something, but generally that's because we want to, and some of us Dachshunds are comfortable doing that.  Not all of us though.

Personally, we tend to agree with these ABC World News Now correspondents:  "Oh, Good God."  What's your take?

News From Russia: A Diving Dachshund!

And we thought the Sadistic Canine Shower Machines from the Future were over the top.  Seeing this, it appears that the Russians have out done the Japanese!  Via the Russian News & Information Agency RIA Novosti

The Diver Training Center at Vladivostok Maritime College in Vladivostok, Russia carried out an unusual experiment for the 15th anniversary of the college. The divers persuaded the center’s director, Sergei Gorbunov, to send his pet dachshund, Boniface, into the depths. The dog-motivated divers made a striped diving suit for Bonnie, as they fondly call the dog. They made a square mask out of Plexiglas thinking the dog may want to breathe under water.

Bonnie used just one air bottle during the diving. The bottle was attached to the dog’s belly allowing Boniface to not just immerse, but to actually swim under the water as well.

According to the center’s canine experimentalists, Boniface felt good during the fur-raising effort, which some hasten to label a success. Nevertheless an offshore dive may be premature. Bonnie will have to dive in a special swimming pool before he can try diving in the open sea.

The staff will train the diver dog for the All-Russian Underwater Hunting Tournament to take place in September.

Dachshund Dog Used As Bait

Picture: SHAUN DALY

Uggh. What a bad start to the week. Well, things can only get better, right? In a horrific story out of KwaZulu-Natal, a province of South Africa, a red smooth Dachshund named 'Jasmine' was stolen from her home by poachers and used as bait to lure wild animals into illegal snares. Apparently a dog's high-pitched cries attracts the wild animals. Jasmine was one of the lucky ones though; a neighbor heard her cries about 4 hours after she went missing and rescued her just as she was surrounded by bush pigs. Read the terrifying story at The Times.

Police Shoot Family's 11-Year-Old Dachshund in Danville, Virginia

To serve and protect? We'd be gathering our Dachshund and dog friends and their humans for a protest right now. The news is grim out of Danville, Virginia, where a family says that police shot and killed their much-loved family member, 11-year-old red smooth 'Killer' on Monday night. The family states that while his name may have been 'Killer,' he was anything but.

"He'd never bit anyone. He would bark, He did his fair share of barking. He had a big bark for a little dog," human Tawaiin Harper said.
But on Monday night, the Harpers say that barking stopped because a police officer, making a stop next door, shot and killed their pet.
"He said, I had to shoot your dog, he was barking at me and that was that," Angela Harper said.
The Harpers have had Killer for 11 years, and losing him, is killing them.
"He was like a member of the family. He had his part on the Christmas tree and his presents under the Christmas tree. It's like a member of the family," Angela said.

Watch the video (we had trouble embedding it) and read more of this horrific story at ABC13.

West Virginia Puppy Mill Rescue Operations Continue

In a follow-up to yesterday's post, the massive rescue operation continues in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where 1,000 dogs, mostly dachshunds, were seized from Whispering Oaks Kennels. Above are some of the residents in a photo provided by Best Friends Animal Society.
The owner of the kennel, Sharon Roberts, who has operated the kennel since 1961, claims that the bust was a "witch hunt." Excerpt from The Charleston Daily Mail: Roberts said "All these people got together and have been cooking this up for weeks." Sheriff's deputies from Wood County came to the kennel with a search warrant on Saturday, based on complaints that dog urine was polluting a nearby creek. The state Department of Environmental Protection also was involved in this part of the investigation.
But Roberts said the deputies also were accompanied by animal rights activists, whom she said were responsible for the destruction of her business. "Every dog was in very good condition," said Roberts, 72. "There were not any fleas. There weren't any skinny dogs. They had not been abused." Roberts surrendered the dogs - mostly dachshunds - to humane society officials, who criticized the kennel as being too large an operation.
Read more of the he said-she said in an informative article at The Charleston Daily Mail.

Meanwhile, rescue organizations and volunteers are working 24/7 to provide care for the one thousand dogs and puppies. This photo by the HSUS at flickr seems to contradict Roberts' statement that there were no skinny dogs, but we should point out that it has been reported that most dogs were in good health. But honestly, just a photo of one such skinny dachshund is enough to let us know that these dogs were not being treated with the utmost respect and care that a dachshund or any animal deserves.

This is the video from the Associated Press.

One Thousand Dachshunds Rescued From Puppy Mill Bust in Parkersburg, West Virginia

We're woofless. Rescue groups and volunteers from all around the country are stepping up to help the Humane Society in what officials say could be the largest animal-rescue operation in West Virginia history - the removal of around 1,000 purebred dachshunds and other dogs a Parkersburg breeder surrendered to authorities Saturday. The dogs appeared to be well-nourished and officials say there were no signs that the dogs had been abused, but the sheer number of dogs at the Whispering Oaks Kennel was more than any human being could possibly care for. Read more at the News and Sentinel and the Humane Society. Your help is urgently needed, as this rescue operation could easily cost $100,000 and bust the seams of our dedicated and over-extended rescue groups . All American Dachshund Rescue is one of the many groups who will be taking possession of some of the dogs.

'Jesus' Held Hostage Over Dachshund 'Poopie'

UPDATE 3:30 PM CST: Jerry S. writes: Jean told WZZM 13 News the statue had been returned, taken not by neighbors but by a family member. She declined to explain further, only that this has now become a family situation.

Oh, the insanity! Meet one of Jean Mansel's four dachshunds. Jean lives in Oakbrook Township, Michigan, and says that one of her neighbors took her 80-pound cement Jesus, a family heirloom, and then called to indicate why it was removed. Excerpt from WorldNetDaily: "My husband got a phone call and a real graspy voice over the phone said, 'Check your mailbox,'" she told WZZM-TV.
Inside the mailbox was a ransom note.
"The note basically said they were holding Jesus for ransom," Mansel said.
The message on the handwritten note states:

We are holding Jesus ransom until you clean up the poopie from your wieners and trust us we see you take your wieners for long walks w/out picking up their poopie in our yards. This has upset us dearly so please clean up all the wiener poopie, if you want to see Jesus unharmed. Sincerely, Lindy Lane Residents.

Mansel has four wiener dogs and told the station there was a complaint last year about conducting their business on other people's lawns. But she says she's cleaned up every pile since. She says she just wants her statue back, and won't press charges if the cement Jesus isn't harmed.

See the video at WZZM-TV.

We hope that Mrs. Mansel gets her Jesus statue back, and that things settle down on Lindy Lane. Maybe the street should be renamed 'Shady Lane' because of such shady activities.

Dachshund Lovers Kicked Out of School!

It seems like the school board needs to get either a sense of humor or a sense of compassion, or that dachshund lovers of the world need to unite and support this guy. Excerpt from The Southern Illinoisan: BY BLACKWELL THOMAS
SESSER -- A Sesser High School student was sent home from class Wednesday morning for wearing what school officials deemed an obscene t-shirt. David Clark Jr. was wearing a shirt that read, “I ♥ my wiener.” Below the text was a silhouette of a dachshund, a breed sometimes referred to as a wiener dog.
Clark said the shirt was a reference to his pet dacshund (sic), which recently died. Clark said he was asked to turn the shirt inside out, change shirts or leave school. Clark chose to leave class. Clark’s parents, Cathy and David Sr. said they intend to pursue legal action against the school.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale law professor, William Schroder said the family might have a case. “I do think that this guy has a reasonable chance of success, “ he said. “He’s not promoting drug use, he’s not promoting violence, promoting disorder or compromising the educational mission of the school.”
Listen to Clark and his father at The Southern Illinoisan.
Wear your heart on your sleeve. Buy the t-shirt.

Lucy the Dachshund Gets a Reprieve

Meet 'Lucy,' the not-so-dangerous black and tan smooth dachshund, and one of her humans, Monique Hobson, aged two. Lucy got loose in October of last year when the family was bringing in groceries from the car and nipped at the ankle of a burly neighbor who pressed charges. Due to a 1991 dangerous dog law, there was a potential fine of £5,000 or 6 months in jail, and Lucy could have been put down. Thankfully, she got a reprieve. Excerpt from The Daily Mail: An eight-inch-high "sausage dog" was given a reprieve by magistrates today after her owner was cleared of letting a dangerous dog run out of control.
Burly landscape gardener Shawn Anderson claimed he was "inconsolable" after miniature Dachshund Lucy allegedly nipped his ankle and bit his jeans.
But Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard he suffered no injuries, there were no teeth marks and no damage to his jeans after the yapping dog ran round his legs outside his flat in Gosforth, Newcastle, in October last year.
He lived in the property below Lucy's owner, Melanie Hobson, 26, her husband Steve and their two children, Monique, two, and four-year-old Jacob.
Magistrates heard that Mrs Hobson was carrying shopping from her car after a trip out with her children when Lucy ran off, barking.
The court heard the dog approached Mr Anderson, ran round his legs and, according to him, bit him on the ankle.
One of the two young children ran up and grabbed the dog, the court heard. Mr Anderson then shouted at the owner: "If your dog bites me again, I will have you done."
The court heard Mrs Hobson replied: "What are you on about? She didn't touch you."

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Flipping Out

Usually it's the dachshund flipping out, but not in this case. Meet Jeff Lewis, the star of Bravo's new series "Flipping Out," and what appears to be his mostly dachshund mix(?) 'Oliver.' Jeff is an obsessive-compulsive control freak who flips million-dollar properties, fights with his disgruntled employees, then talks to his spirit guide about it all. Oliver needs to be rescued from the drama. The dachudrama.
Jeff apparently takes good care of his dog though: "Let's face it, the people I have working for me aren't necessarily the most qualified individuals," notes Lewis. "But the people that take care of me and my home and my pets are the most important part of this business. They can't leave. I can't do this without them."
If you like train wrecks, and wanna watch the doxie sit back and observe it all, find out more at Bravotv.com.
