All About Canadian Dachshund Rescue

'Rolo' Wears His Foster Dog Bandana

If you have a few moments to spare, make sure and head over to Samaritan Magazine for coverage of the fine work being done by Canadian Dachshund Rescue, including the challenges that are specific to Dachshunds.  Here's an excerpt:

If they could talk, the wiener dogs in the care of Canadian Dachshund Rescue would tell you that being ridiculously cute has its drawbacks. For one thing, it tends to obscure some of the unique characteristics specific to the breed that require firm and knowledgeable training in puppies to produce well-heeled adults.
“Every breed has its challenges,” Meaghan Middleton-Firman, vice president with Canadian Dachshund Rescue’s board of directors, tells Samaritanmag. “But dachshunds are cute, tiny dogs and people get them because everybody loves wieners. Kids stop us on the street to look at them.
“What people don’t realize is that dachshunds are hunting dogs; they are the only breed meant to hunt above and below ground. So they’ll go face-first into a badger hole, and then bark loud enough that their owner can find them while they’re underground. They are tenacious and loud.

Helen LaBuda

We want to stop and take a little time today to honor a great friend of Dachshunds who passed away this week, Helen LaBuda, of Cedar Lake, Indiana.  Maybe you are lucky enough to know someone in your life who is so incredibly passionate about animals, dogs, Dachshunds, that their entire life is devoted to their care and well-being.  This was Helen La Buda.  She worked tirelessly with MidWest Dachshund Rescue to rescue, transport, vet, foster, and rehome the canines that are dear to our heart, especially those with special needs.  Without her help, hundreds of Dachshunds would have perished, and would have never brought such joy to their new humans' homes and lives.
We would ask that you consider donating to your local dog shelter or Dachshund rescue in her honor today.  Beacuse even in her passing, she will save more lives. This is what her life was all about.
If you have a few moments to spare, please head over to Happy Tails Books, where you can read a short story that she wrote for a book titled Lost Souls: FOUND! Inspiring Stories About Dachshunds.  Her wonderful sense of humor and love for Dachshunds really comes to light in just a few short paragraphs.  Here's the link.

MWDR 2012

As you busily sort out your shopping list, pen your Christmas cards, plan your holiday soirĂ©e, and scrape up some cash to donate to your favorite charity this season, don't forget your local Dachshund or Animal Rescue organization.  We're lucky to have one of the finest Dachshund rescue organizations in the country to help out our local long dogs, Rowdy's alma mater, MidWest Dachshund Rescue.
Please give generously to the folks who work tirelessly all year long to rescue, vet, foster, and re-home the Dachshunds and dogs who are in the greatest need.
Enjoy MWDR's 2012 Year End Video.  Excerpt from their end-of-the year letter:

On behalf of the many foster home, volunteers and contributors of MDWR, we are pleased to report that 2012 has been our most successful year. We have helped 249 dachshunds from puppy mills, shelters, abandoned dogs and owner surrenders. Our volunteers have driven thousands of miles with one goal in mind, to help dogs without the good fortune of being raised and cared for in loving homes or those that have found themselves homeless through no fault of their own.
We wish to express our deepest appreciation to our donors whose contributions and in-kind donations have been key to our efforts. We also appreciate the many animal care providers who helped our dogs throughout the year. Our deepest gratitude goes to our volunteers who helped us transport, foster, and care for all the dogs who came to MWDR in 2012. MWDR is especially grateful to the many people who adopted our dogs in 2012, and who welcomed the dogs into loving homes. Finally MWDR remembers all the wonderful little dogs who came our way and who provided us with hope and strength as we watch their tails wag and receive their appreciative kisses, and unconditional love.
We are hopeful to expand our funding and volunteer base in 2013 to be able to help more dogs and connect them with even more loving homes. Thank you for being part of the MWDR family. Wishing you all a happy, safe and healthy 2013!

Dachshund Drama: Obie The Obese Dog At Center Of Custody Lawsuit

Obie and Nora Vanatta; Video no longer on net, was at:  KATU.com

We're quite sure that you remember 'Obie,' the Obese Dachshund, who we have featured many times here over the past few months through his rescue and impending stardom - appearing on national television shows including Live with Kelly and The Today Show.

Well, as noted by our hero, British singer Morrissey, above, Obie got the fame, he got some money to help him out - now bring on the lawsuits.  Oregon Dachshund Rescue (ODR) has filed legal papers in Portland, demanding the return of Obie from his foster home.  His foster mom and caretaker, Nora Vanatta, released this statement yesterday on Obie's Facebook Page:

Dear Obie supporters,
As you have all been following this story and supporting Obie's journey as he in turn inspires you, I must tell you of the awful news I just received.
When Drew Martin Lee initially reached out for help to get Obie out of his dire situation, Jenell Rangan recognized that she didn't have the resources to properly care for him and she publicly shared the letter. I stepped up and said that I would foster him if someone would bring him to me. I had absolutely no idea what to expect but I knew that I could help him. Patricia Malone (Bosello) volunteered to pick him up and bring him to me. I took it upon myself to take him to the vet the next day to get an exam and blood work. Linda Klein graciously stepped up and offered to pay for his first vet visit as well as start a FB page to help with the subsequent care required to rehabilitate him. I am committed to his full rehabilitation even though it will be much longer than I anticipated.
The FB page exploded with supportive people from over 20 countries and many people have donated money for his care. He became very popular and national networks contacted me and asked to share his story. I realized what an inspiration he was to people and that his story was helping so many in their own journeys to get healthy and bring awareness to the effects of obesity on people as well as their pets. The attention was overwhelming at first but I was always thinking of the mission that Obie could share and I was very careful of what people wanted to write about him. I made it clear that this was a positive thing and that it wasn't about bashing the previous owners or exploiting a fat dog. I turned down several media requests because I didn't like where they wanted to go with the story. Obie has a story and a mission to share and help other people. I am working on starting a non-profit to continue to help and inspire others in their mission to lose weight.
Jenell Rangan, owner of ODR is now demanding that I give Obie to her and actually deliver him to her lawyer's office. I must appear in court Monday morning (Washington County at 9am). She is claiming that Obie belongs to her, that I am misusing funds, and not providing proper veterinary care.
It is very upsetting that Jenell is using doxie-saving money to take him away from me especially since she has received donations and support thanks to Obie and me sharing his story. She has admitted to not being able to handle him and that he is doing well with me. He has bonded to me and Hunter and Noggin. She clearly doesn't have his best interest in mind and is only interested in him now that he is famous. I am going to fight for him and I need your continued support. I am not in a position to spend money on a lawyer but it is just not right to make Obie adjust to a new home now. I am asking for your continued support to help Obie stay with me.
Thank you,
Nora

While we would certainly like to hear more from Oregon Dachshund Rescue on this matter, the facts as known show that Ms.Vanatta has done a great job with Obie - he has lost 15 pounds, she has shielded him from sensationalist exposure, and he is getting great veterinary care.  Guess we'll all find out what happens on Monday in court.  We must add that all of this drama isn't good for anyone at this point - especially Obie.

Obie already has over 10,000 signatures on a petition at change.org supporting that he stay in his current foster home.

Keep up with Obie on his Facebook Page.

Fred's Rescue

Thankfully 'Fred' found haven at the Baja Animal Shelter, Mexico.

Video by youtuber Rickand Pouna who notes:
Driving in Rosarito, Mexico, we came across a little white Dachshund that was obviously starving. This is a video of the rescue. We took him to Baja Animal Sanctuary where they are used to this type of dog. Please support them: http://www.bajaanimalsanctuary.org/  They are a registered non profit organization and they have over 350 dogs and cats living at their facility 20 minutes south of the San Diego/Tijuana border.

If You Have Five Seconds To Spare

We're pretty sure that we have never asked our readers to "go somewhere and vote," but our local Dachshund Rescue, MidWest Dachshund Rescue, could sure use your help.  Today is the last day of voting, and they are still in the running to win a $20,000 grant.  Boy, could that help a lot of Dachshunds in need.  This is part of the Chase Community Giving program.
We understand that folks who come here are from all over the world and may have already voted for a local dog or Dachshund rescue near where they live, or perhaps another great cause.  But if you haven't voted yet, could you cast one for MWDR?  This is the great rescue that your Long and Short of it All host 'Rowdy' came from.  They do wonderful work, and just 50 or 100 votes could knock them out of the running on this, the last day of voting.  Voting ends today, Wed. Sept. 19 at 11:59:59 p.m. ET.

Here is a direct link to the facebook page:  Chase/MWDR

If Chase is your bank, you can vote again on the official Chase Website.

Thanks so much for your help - we can do this!
Your Long and Short of it All hosts,
Joey and Rowdy

Adoption Spotlight: Meet Taylor!

Well Howdy!

There are so many wonderful Dachshunds in shelters and local rescue organizations just waiting and waiting and waiting for their forever home.  Beautiful red smooth 'Taylor' is one of those beauties who wants to be your best friend.  But she's had no luck at all finding that special family.  See, she's been in foster with MidWest Dachshund Rescue now since June of 2011 - for over a year - and there hasn't been a SINGLE application to adopt her!  Nothing.  NADA.  Can you believe it?  Look how cute she is!  If you live in the MidWest and are looking to add to your pack, would you consider this sweet girl?  Here's more info about her:

Taylor is a sweet 7 year old. She is skittish but once she settles in she loves to snuggle up right next to you. She would be a perfect companion for a quiet family.
She has shown some aggression when cornered and scared, so homes with full time small children are not a good choice for her. Taylor is fine with all adults, other dogs, and her demeanor suggests cats would probably be ok too.
She is good on a leash, likes going for walks and likes running at the dog park. Taylor has excellent recall, she will come back when you call her. (amazing for a doxie).
She`s a sweet funny little girl, who doesn`t mind wearing sweaters or shirts (seems to actually enjoy them) and only wants someone to love her.
She seldom barks, even when her foster brothers are barking incessantly. She is fine sleeping at night in her ex pen, is very quiet.
She plays with the other dogs occasionally, but her favorite indoor pastime is chewing on rawhides. I think Taylor would like a doggie companion for when your gone, but otherwise she is content to sleep on your lap.
She is typical of doxies and potty training, and as long as you are diligent with taking her out she will go outside. She sleeps while her foster parents are away in the ex pen with a potty pad, and will go on the potty pad if we don't come home soon enough.
Taylor was a breeder surrender, and she currently has kidney stones, which requires a daily medication and special prescription food. She was just in for a checkup on 04/10/12 and the stones have dissolved quite a bit, just a bit more until she is totally clear, so it is possible that she may not need the meds and special food forever.

If you think you have a place in your heart for Sweet Taylor, please head on over to MidWest Dachshund Rescue.

38 Dachshunds Rescued From Texarkana Arkansas Home

Seen here are nineteen - just half - of the thirty-eight Dachshunds rescued from a Texarkana, Arkansas home last week by Jeff Tarpley Rescue out of Cedar Park, Texas.  Mr. Tarpley, who runs his own rescue group, got a call from a man in his 60's who said he and his wife had too many dogs.  This is what he saw when he opened the door to their home.
The Associated Press reports:

All of the dogs have names, but Tarpley says he suspects the couple made up the names on the spot when the rescue group arrived.
The couple told Tarpley that they got two dogs 10 years ago but never had them spayed or neutered — and this was the result.

These guys could be poster-dogs for a spay and neuter campaign.  Ten of the dogs were taken to Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas, while others were sent to a Texarkana kennel or placed in foster homes.

The number of Dachshunds increased from thirty eight the very next day after the rescue when newborn puppies made their appearance into this world.

Donations to help these guys are being accepted at ChipIn.

Keep up with this rescue at Jeff Tarpley Rescue's Facebook Page.

Dachshund Reincarnation

There's nothing as sad in the world as losing your beloved little furry ones, and when they go, humans will go to great lengths to fill that void in their lives.  There are stories of people who have had their dogs cloned, and there is a Dachshund Lover from Utah who right now is on the hunt for the mother of his little girl 'Sophie' who passed in a fire last month -  he has hopes that the owners will breed her so he can, in some way, get the closest thing possible to his Sophie back.
While not going to such great extremes, enter Mary and Bruce Peterson, seen here, with their newly adopted Dachshund 'Anna.'  Anna is the sister of a Dachshund named 'Jenny' that the Wisconsin natives lost to IVDD last year, but it was just fate that led Anna to their home.  Excerpt from the Journal Sentinel:

Jenny, a 9-year-old miniature dachshund belonging to Bruce and Mary Peterson of Waukesha, died in March 2011.
Last week, the Petersons got Jenny's sister, Anna. She had been turned over to a vet by an elderly woman who couldn't care for her anymore.
With the original breeder of the dogs acting as a middleman, Bruce drove to the veterinary clinic and got Anna on the day she was scheduled to be euthanized.
"When the doctor entered the room with the dog, I thought I was seeing things. She looked just like Jenny. I was overloaded with a ton of emotions," Bruce told me.
The story starts June 21, 2001, when Jenny and Anna and a few more littermates were born to a dachshund owned by breeders Pat and Carol Tesar in Edgerton. The Thompsons, who then lived in Kenosha, took Jenny home in September just days before Sept. 11, and a couple from Lake Mills took Anna.
The Tesars, who have since retired from the breeding business, have stayed in touch with many people who have purchased their puppies over the years. This month, they stopped in to see the woman who originally took Anna.
She is now 82, and her husband died two years ago. He had been very attached to Anna, but the wife had difficulty connecting to the dog after her husband's death. On more than one occasion, most recently on July 8, Anna bit the woman.
The woman told the Tesars she planned to take the dog to the Waterloo Veterinary Clinic. She had become afraid of Anna and was worried the dog would bite someone else.
The minute he looked into the eyes of Jenny's sister Anna, Bruce knew she was coming home with him. The clinic lent him a dog carrier for the ride home from Waterloo. Bruce called Mary on the way home to tell her they were dog owners again.
Anna immediately warmed to her new owners and their home and backyard. The biting stopped. Bruce took Jenny's collar, which had been in a place of honor in the house along with a tin containing Jenny's ashes, and he put it on Anna. He retrieved Jenny's doggy bed, pillow, blanket, bowls and favorite toys from storage. They belong to Anna now.
Anna has most of Jenny's chocolate brown and tan coloring and her mannerisms, though she does sleep later in the morning. Jenny was insistent about going outside before dawn. The neighbors noticed the new dog and got an eerie feeling that Jenny had returned.
"I said to my neighbor that you don't get too many opportunities to get your dog back. That's what it feels like," Bruce said.
Jenny died too young, he said, "and for us, it's like we get to finish what we started out doing."

Wow.  Read more of this story at the Journal Sentinel.

What a Wiener! Hobbes the Dachshund Transforms Talk Radio in Vermont

We couldn't be happier to report that the first and only full-time canine radio host in America is a Dachshund:  Meet 'Hobbes!'  This handsome red smooth rescue was found "bleeding from every orifice," as a result of being starved, neglected, and thrown against a wall by his previous "humans."
He was adopted by talk-radio host Bruce Zeman, and now the duo have a show called The Wake-Up Crew With Bruce and Hobbes on WVTK out of Middlebury, Vermont!  Excerpt from Seven Days:

“He’s the reason this station is so successful,” says Zeman, who is also general manager of the 25,000-watt FM station in Middlebury. “I’d like to think I’ve had something to do with it, but I have no illusions.”
Zeman and his wife, Tami, a nurse at Fletcher Allen Health Care, adopted Hobbes and nursed him back to health. Over the next few months, Zeman talked about his new dog during his morning show and occasionally brought him into the studio, where his yips and howls could be heard over the air. As more listeners learned of Hobbes’ story, Zeman says, people started urging him to “do something more” on the issue of animal cruelty.
In March 2010, Hobbes formally debuted as a full-time WVTK morning radio host — and a star was born. Since then, Bruce and Hobbes’ show, which runs from 5:30 to 9 a.m., has hosted such guests as Rep. Peter Welch, Middlebury Police Chief Thomas Hanley and former governor Jim Douglas. Hobbes has been invited onto the floor of the Vermont House of Representative and was made an honorary K-9 member of the police forces in Middlebury and Vergennes.
More recently, the duo was invited to appear on an upcoming episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” A children’s book, called Hobbes Goes Home, is due out this fall.
But Zeman insists that Hobbes is much more than a clever marketing gimmick. Last year, WVTK held a 72-hour radio marathon, during which Zeman and Hobbes raised $12,000 for a new animal shelter in Addison County. Most of the donations, Zeman notes, came in $5 and $10 increments. When they hit the $12,000 goal, he says, “We had grown men crying in here.”

Read more about Hobbes at Seven Days.  This guy deserves such a WOOF!!!  And YES, you can listen to Bruce and Hobbes live weekdays on the net from 5:30 to 9 AM Eastern Time at WVTK.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Josh Duhamel Teams Up With Petsmart Charities

Transformers star and husband of singer Fergie, Josh Duhamel, is on a campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption.  He's blogging about it on Huffington Post, talking about it at People magazine, and even teaming up with Petsmart Charities as seen in the above video to get the word out.  Mr. Duhamel talks open and candidly at People magazine about the love of his Dachshunds:

All it took was a little Meatloaf for Josh Duhamel to become a convert.
Six years ago, the actor and his wife Fergie were looking to provide a companion for their 1-year-old dachshund Zoe, so they searched online and found another dachshund through a rescue.
"Meatloaf was truly a beautiful dog," Duhamel tells PEOPLE of the aging dachshund he brought into his home. "He was the most lovable, appreciative, soulful little dude. He just turned out to be such a great pet, such a great friend, and ever since then I've been an advocate of rescuing."
True to his word, Duhamel has partnered with PetSmart Charities' High-Five for Pet Adoption campaign, which celebrates the five million pets that have been adopted at PetSmart Adoption Centers since 1994.
Still, many millions more need homes. "I wanted to make aware how much of a problem it is in this country," he says. "I can speak from experience: [adopting] was the smartest thing we've done when it comes to owning a pet."
Rescue hadn't been on Duhamel's radar when he brought home Zoe while working on the NBC drama Las Vegas – and a disappointed colleague took it upon herself to educate the actor.
"When she found out that we bought Zoe, she gave me an earful, and that's when I first heard about pet adoption," Duhamel says. "Ever since then, I tell anybody who's going to get a pet that that's the way to go, not just because it's the right thing to do but because they make incredible pets."
Meatloaf was one of them. "From the very beginning, Zoe was taken well care of," Duhamel says. "We call her the spoiled little Brentwood dog because she never knew any hardship, unlike Meatloaf, who totally appreciated everything. He was just so loving and he was always so consistent." In his advancing age, the dachshund became afflicted by a degenerative brain disease and died on April 1 in his sleep.
"We have his ashes in a box," Duhamel says. "We were going to bury it and put a little memorial out, but we decided we wanted to keep it on the mantle at home because – I dunno, we just couldn't bury him for some reason. We just wanted to keep him close."
The shelter dogs that Duhamel has met since working with PetSmart Charities have also reminded him of Meatloaf. "They all seem to have that same characteristic of gratitude," he says. "I can only imagine what it's like in some of these shelters. When they do get a loving home, they truly appreciate it."

14 Dachshunds Perish In Fire

Images of Some Available Dachshunds at Dachshund Idaho Rescue on Adopt a Pet

We're woofless.  Our hearts go out to Karen McCombs, her husband Robert, and their son, Sean, 16, who hail from Fruitland, Idaho.  Mrs. McCombs operates Dachshund Idaho Rescue out of her home there, and it was lost to fire on Saturday afternoon, along with 14 Dachshunds.  She got her 1st dachshund in 1967 and showed them for over a decade, with some champions achieved.  This rescue has going strong since 2003, placing over 100 Dachshunds and dachsie mixes.  Excerpt from The Idaho Statesman:

A Fruitland couple and their son lost just about everything they owned Saturday afternoon, after a fire tore through a single-wide trailer they were renting.
The family were all home at the time of the blaze, but they say they weren't able to act fast enough to save many of the dogs.
"I was asleep. I have bronchitis," McCombs said. She said her son was in the living room, and her husband was in the kitchen. She said the fire started out on the front porch.
"It was just like out of nowhere," McCombs said. "It just burned so fast that we could not get it under control."
McCombs said she was able to save four dogs — three dachshunds and an Akita.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene and provided vouchers for three nights at a motel in Ontario, Ore.
McCombs said she and her husband, both in their mid-60s and on Social Security, would welcome any help. They are staying at the Oregon Inn in Ontario, Room #4. Reach them at 208-695-4761.
McCombs provided their clothing sizes: boys large shirts, 34 x 30 pants, size 11 or 12 men's shoes; size 14 women's clothes and XL men's shirts and 38 x 30 pants.

Please visit the rescue's facebook page where you can find contact information, as well as an address for donations, which will be posted soon.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Liv Ullmann

Oh, yes.  Liv Ullmann is a Norwegian actress and film director, as well as one of the "muses" of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Nominated five times for a Best Actress Golden Globe, winning once for The Emigrants, Ullmann has also been nominated for the Palme d'Or, two times for the Academy Award, and two times for a BAFTA Film Award.  She is the inspiration for Steven Tyler's daughter's Liv's name, and oh yeah, she's a Dachshund Lover.  She recently talked with the Boston Globe about her pretty rescue Dachshund 'Chelsea':

Q: Have you always had pets?
A: Yes. Growing up, I had one fox terrier and one golden retriever.
Q: When and where did you adopt your dog?
A: We adopted her 2 years ago and we’re a little unsure of her age but we decided on 7. Sometimes I wish I was an animal because I've never ever seen such care of an animal in the world [by the MSPCA].
Q: What made you choose her?
A: [The MSPCA] knew that we had lost our dachshund some years ago and my husband [Boston developer Donald Saunders] didn’t want a new one but while I was away in Norway they did phone and said they had this incredible little dachshund and he should at least come and look at her.
Q: What happened to her before she came to live with you?
A: She had been with someone for five years and they just left a letter that she was born at a flea market. She was sick, of course. Her left leg was completely crooked. But then at (Angell Animal Medical Center), they did an operation on her... Now she has a perfect leg.
Q: What are three traits you love about Chelsea?
A: She loves to sit on the lap. She is so sweet. She is very people oriented.
Q: Why did you name her Chelsea?
A: She was called Chelsea to the people who delivered her. We didn't want to change that.

WEE-ners against NATO

It's been total chaos in Chicago, the world headquarters of The Long and Short of it All, over the last four days with the NATO summit and all of its protesters here.  We couldn't be happier now that it's over.
But this red smooth wanted to make sure her bark was heard at Saturday's Cross-Town Bark Around Fundraiser sponsored by MidWest Dachshund Rescue.  And it was - she won the costume contest as judged by WGN radio personality John Williams.
We had an awesome time at this year's event - there were over 1,400 humans in attendance and heaven knows how many Dachshunds - easily over 400.  Fifty volunteers kept the event running smoothly.  We're hoping lots of hard cash was raised to help the needy Dachshunds that come into rescue.

See 125 super photos from the event by Jill Wait Pet Photography on Facebook.

We're so proud of our crew (and we miss our Miss Maggie very much).  Regular readers of The Long and Short of it All may remember this photo we took at last year's “Cross Town Bark Around,” a fundraiser and social presented by Midwest Dachshund Rescue (MWDR).  Well, it was selected in a local edition of the Chicago Tribune to promote this year's event!   We couldn't be happier!
If you live in the Midwest, you do NOT want to miss this year's event which is taking place on Saturday, May 19th, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.  You will be shocked and amazed at the amazing raffles, prizes, and activities.  Via Trib Local:

The event will be inside Buildings 2 and 3 and will be held, rain or shine. The “Doxie Dash Wiener Races” will begin at 2 p.m. All activities, except for the races, will be inside the buildings. Dachshunds, dachshund mixes and their families and friends are invited. Dachshund lovers without dogs are also welcome.
Activities in addition to the Doxie Dash include raffles and silent auctions, featuring Cubs and White Sox tickets, theme park passes, dining gift cards and overnight hotel stays. The event also will feature a Doxie “Kiss-Off,” Doxie Cake Walk, Best Costume and Best “Peanut Butter Licker” Contests and Paw Painting on Canvas for the little Pawcassos. The Doxie General Store will feature one-of-a-kind dog-related items. There also will be “Ask The Trainer” and “Teach A Dog A Trick” booths, a bake sale, nail trims, wiener games and photos with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Pedal Car.
All proceeds benefit rescued dachshunds whose veterinary care, spaying and neutering, food, medication and other needs prior to adoption are funded by MWDR.
Admission is $5 for adults, which includes one free hot dog. Registration is not required for admission but advance registration is necessary for Doxie Dash Wiener Race participants.

Firefighters Rescue Dachshund Stuck in Tree in Cemetery

We couldn't make this one up if we tried!  We've all heard of firefighters rescuing cats from trees, but have you ever heard of a dog needing rescue from a tree, much less a Dachshund?  Well, meet red longhair 'Cappy,' a pretty rescue-girl who hails from Beaufort, South Carolina.  Cappy went missing about 6 PM Sunday, and her human, Mimi Austin, asked for help finding her on facebook.  So, her friends joined in the search at about 12:30 in the morning.  Excerpt from The Island Packet:

They went straight to the cemetery, which is close to Austin's house.
Flashlights in hand, the women searched until they thought they heard barking in the back of the cemetery.
"We rushed to where we thought we heard it, and we traced it to this big oak tree with major brush around it," she said. "Once we got to the tree, the barking stopped."
Austin was on her porch and came rushing over at the familiar sound of Cappy's bark. Thinking her dog was caught in the brush, she started cutting some of it away with clippers.
The women started getting frustrated with searching in the dark, when two Beaufort police officers stopped by to see what three women, a dog and a car were doing in the rear of the cemetery, Mrs. Austin's friend Kim Bonturi said. One officer shone his light up in the tree and spotted the dog.
The dachshund had climbed up 12 feet in the tree, out of reach of the women and officers even with Bonturi's eight-foot ladder.
The women had to wait about 45 minutes until firefighters Vezin and David Evans, who had been out on a medical call, arrived with a ladder.
"She was just happy to be in her mom's arms," Bonturi said of the dachshund.
Cappy seemed to be fine, Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department spokesman John

Robinson said.
The dog lapped up an entire bowl of water when she got home, said Bonturi, who works with Chain Free Beaufort, a nonprofit dedicated to helping animals.

Dachshunds Let It All Hang Out For St. Patrick's Day

We hope you are all recovering after a big weekend for Dachshunds and their humans!  Who says Germans can't be Irish?   Above, our pal 'Honey' delighted party-goers everywhere she went with her Wearin' O' the Green.  Make sure and keep up with Honey over at flickr in Honey in 2012!

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Dachshund Club out of Buffalo, New York, marched in the local St. Patrick's Day Parade yesterday.  Catch all the photos at their meetup site.

And finally, fun was ta' be had with On My Way Home Dachshund Rescue and their adoptathon at The Soggy Dog in Henderson, Nevada.  Good times!
