Proving once again that Dachtober may be over, but it's never too late to dress your Dachshund in costume, here's a Dachshund News Roundup on a seasonably cool, yet thankfully dry autumn day, Monday, November 16, 2009.  Can we get a woof?!  Above, 'Marcello,' a 5-year-old black and tan smooth who hails from warm Miami Beach, Florida, won best costume at the second annual Paws in the Park fundraiser on November 8 in Miami.  Over $15,000 was raised to benefit Friends Forever Rescue.  Way to go!  Read more and see lots of pics at The Miami Herald.

Kisses!  In Dachshund show dog news, 81 Dachshunds competed yesterday for Best of Breed at the 28th Annual Dachshund Fanciers Association of Berks County in Bern Township, Pennsylvania.  Above, Carol Johnson of Flourtown, gets a kiss from handsome red longhair 'Rory' during the show. In Dachshund healthcare news, smooth brindle 'Dezi Howell' receives therapeutic laser treatment after her spay at at Caring Hands Veterinary Hospital in Billings, Montana.  Although the procedure is still considered alternative, research is showing that rarely do animal patients have inflammation or infection in the incision after the treatment.  Read all about it and some other new veterinary technologies at The Independent Record.

In Dachshund rescue news, this handsome senior black and tan smooth was found tied to a bench in a park with his Red Heeler-mix sister last Monday.  A nearby Fred Meyer store employee found a note in an elevator which asked the finder to rescue her two dogs.  He has been given the name 'Guy' at a nearby shelter.  Read more at The Curry Pilot.

And finally, in Dachshund sporting news, meet 'Bruce,' a red smooth on a mission at Saturday's master earthdog trials in Woodland, California.  The event, sponsored by The Border Terrier Club of the Redwoods, featured dogs from all over the state showing off their tunneling skills. 

Mike Delikowski of Modesto spent much of his time calling after his dachshund, Bruce, who went off exploring.
"Bruce, I've got the rat," he shouted, to no avail.

Proving once again that all dogs deserve a chance at life, it's a Dachshund News Roundup on a rather hot and muggy dog day of summer, Monday, August 10, 2009. Above, it breaks your heart, but we're sure that this Dachshund mix has better things to worry about than what her snout looks like. Meet 6-year-old 'Daisy,' who was found in a cardboard box last February outside a convenience store in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and taken to the SPCA of Tulsa for treatment. After 2 reconstructive surgeries, she is now ready for adoption, so get in line! It is thought that her injury was an accident; the result of a something quick and clean, like a fan blade. Run Wiener Dog, Run! Meet 9-year-old 'Maddie,' the top dog at Moffat County Fair’s Wiener Dog Races near Craig, Colorado. Maddie beat out 15 other long dogs to take home the crown, way to go! And finally, it's Kisses! We know Dachshund Lover Jimmy Clayton was excited to be reunited with his smooth black and tan Snickers last Friday. He had left him at the Humane Society of Louisville, Kentucky, to be neutered on Tuesday when flash floods caused an emergency evacuation of the facility. After police reports were filed and newspaper stories were written, it was discovered that he was in the good hands of an evacuation volunteer. Jimmy said he will be bringing Snickers back to be neutered and the Humane Society will throw in a tracking chip for free. Read all about it at the Courier-Journal.

Can we get a woof? Above, these red smooths, 'Ralph' and 'Moe,' wore their allegiance around their necks at the 77th annual Independence Day Parade in Clawson, Michigan on Saturday. This red smooth aptly named 'Streak' holds nothing back for his human Cheyenne Turner, after he won the first heat of the Rusty Hylton Memorial Dachshund Derby Saturday afternoon during the Fayetteville Heritage Festival in West Virginia. Fast. Furious. Where the accepted laws of physics have no meaning, here's a Weekend Wiener Dog Wrap-Up on a beautiful summer day, Monday, June 15, 2009. Dachshunds raced for the glory of it all, all across the nation this last weekend, and what did your Dachshund do? Above, it was the 16th Annual Wiener Dog Nationals on Saturday as part of Germanfest in Fort Wayne, Indiana. While 128 dogs competed for the prize, we're excited to report that returning champion 'Zeus' was crowned the victor. Way to go! Read more about the race at the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Moving on to the west coast, local favorite 'Smithers' of San Francisco (right) lunges out of Gate 1 on the heels of the leading dachshund Saturday in Heat No. 2 of the Wiener Nationals dog race regionals at Berkeley's Golden Gate Fields. See some super amazing photos at SFGate.com.

Bill Lillich of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, gives 'Buddy,' a 5-month-old red longhair, a kiss before putting him down for a puppy race Sunday at the Keystone Dachshund Races near Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. There's nothing like Dachshunds and Barbecue, and proving this point was the "Sausage Sprint" Dachshund races on Saturday at the Raytown SummerFest and BBQ Cookoff in Raytown, Missouri. Never Ending Wiener Races: On 3/15, wiener dogs by the names of Bill Cosby, Ferfie, Frieda, Jack Black, Penny Lane, Ramen, Roxy Harbert, Tootsie, Truffle and dozens others participated in a race to the death: The Old World Village's St. Patrick's Day Dachshund Races in Huntington Beach, California! Beer flowed aplenty (at $7/cup!), and bratwurst was readily available. Next races are scheduled for Apr. 19, May 17, June 21, July 12, Aug. 23 and every Sunday Sept. 6 through Nov. 1 (Oktoberfest).

Kisses! Meet red smooth 'Jasper' and his human Bernard Christelle, who hail from Sun City, Arizona. Jasper lost the use of his legs several years ago when he attempted to jump from the couch and onto a chair. He missed the chair and in the process broke one of his vertebrae and separated his spine.
Many people have asked, Christelle said, why he didn't euthanize Jasper after the dog's injuries failed to heal.
"I wouldn't even think about it because this dog means so much to me," he said.

Meet 'Major,' a 3-year-old wire-hair, and his human, Mary Meagher of Hugh Allen Crescent in Marston, Oxford, UK. Major found himself in a prickly predicament when he investigated a family of hedgehogs and their baby hoglets who live under the neighbor's shed, and got himself stuck in the process. Ten firefighters had to be called to the scene to extract the nosey boy. A barbecue has been offered to all the firefighters as a way to say thanks. Read all about it at the Oxford Mail.

The wieners of the 13th annual Weinerschnitzel Wiener Nationals at Los Alamitos Race Course had a practice run on Wednesday in preparation for the big race this weekend in Los Alamitos, California. One of flickr's most prolific dachshund photographers, Tobyotter, aka Tony Alter, who hails from Newport News, Virginia, is in the news as one of his non-doxie photos was featured in the new Hulk movie. Bleachers had to be set up to handle the huge crowd for the second annual wiener races in downtown Pendleton, Oregon on Friday. Above, Jenna Collins, 11, of Walla Walla holds her dachshund, 'Joey,' 3, while watching the races on Main Street. The races were a benefit for the Children's Museum of Eastern Oregon. It's a sad tale, but meet five of sixteen dachshunds rescued from a home in Fortuna, California, on Thursday. The dogs' owner was recently arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and solicitation to commit murder. Finally, this photo of longhair dachshund puppies by Tania Brewer of Medford, Oregon, was chosen by Hallmark to be on a card, and is now available in over 3,000 stores nationwide. Thiry-five Wiener Dogs raced in the 2008 K-Bull 93 Johnson & Johnson Wiener Dog Race at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, last Thursday. This is a fun promo video for Utah's K-Bull country radio station of the event, complete with a special cheesy dachshund song!

Kisses! Meet little dappled 'Sammy' and her human Linda Hemmann of Red Lion, Pennsylvania. Ms. Hemmann hopes to train her littermate doxies as therapy dogs, but is having some trouble with her boisterous babies. She found help with free training classes at her local SPCA. Excerpt from The York Daily Record: Having all but given up on breaking Sammy and Sadie of their incessant licking and barking habits, Hemmann hopes she's finally found the answer she's been looking for after attending the class Monday night.
First embarrassed by Sammy's loud introduction to the class, Hemmann learned quickly that a loud dog in a training class will get a lot of attention.
Both Sammy and her owner learned early the first lesson of dog training -- vinegar water.
