Boniface, The Deep-Diving Dachshund

Thanks to the many readers who sent in links to news stories about 'Boniface,' the Russian Diving Dachshund.  We got so many emails about the story, we can't begin to thank everyone, but trust us, we're humbly grateful for the story tips!  It's funny how odd little stories like this blow up to be global news.  We first featured Boniface back on May 6, 2010 with little fanfare, but once The Associated Press sends out a news story, it sure goes viral - which happened over the weekend.  And it's great when Dachshunds get such global attention!
Here's the breakdown from the AP:

MOSCOW — Any dachshund owner knows the feisty breed rarely backs off from a challenge, but one in Russia is taking that reputation to new heights — or depths.
The dog named Boniface is learning how to scuba dive.
Owner Sergei Gorbunov, a professional diver in the Pacific Coast city of Vladivostok had a diving suit complete with helmet made for the dog and is teaching him the tricks of the trade.
In a recent demonstration, Boniface barked eagerly as Gorbunov readied the equipment and uncomplainingly endured being hung upside-down as Gorbunov fitted the suit on him.
Once underwater, he seemed to have a different outlook, emitting some high-pitched whines.
Gobunov says, "Underwater, I don't think he experiences any stress."

Now honestly, we're not the biggest fans of this story - we're not so sure that deep under water is the place for a Dachshund to be.  Sure, we might dive down a little depth to fetch a ball or something, but generally that's because we want to, and some of us Dachshunds are comfortable doing that.  Not all of us though.

Personally, we tend to agree with these ABC World News Now correspondents:  "Oh, Good God."  What's your take?

Canada Day Wiener Dog Races

We'd be remiss if we didn't wish our Canadian friends a belated happy Canada Day while we're off celebrating Independence Day here in the states.  The Dachshunds came out in force to the first ever Wiener Dog races at Northlands Park in Edmonton on Thursday to help celebrate the big day.  Enjoy this great video by vimeoer thehorses.com.

Maggie's Little Helper

BOOM!  Whistle, POP! fizzle....KaPow!  It's a tough weekend for 'Maggie,' your Long and Short of it All hostess, and many of our Dachshund friends.  Does this herbal anxiety med help relieve the stress?  Not really.  But along with soothing music, closed windows, lavender spray, kisses, and a few extra treats, it's a start.

Be safe and have fun. Read tips to protect your Dachshund today at The Humane Society of the United States.

Royal Dachshund Watch: Caroline, Princess of Hanover

We are Royalty after all, and as such, we love it when we're favored by the Monarchs.   Caroline, Princess of Hanover, formally styled Her Royal Highness The Princess of Hanover, has returned to reside in Monte Carlo with her children.  The Princess of Hanover is the eldest child of the late Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his wife, the former American film actress Grace Kelly. She is seen here with her two Dachshund puppies on June 25, 2010, while watching her daughter Charlotte perform in the Equestrian Grand Prix.  Source.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Jed!

Thanks so much to Jolyn Liam for sending in such nice photos of her handsome red smooth 'Jed.'  This duo hails all the way from Malaysia, and they enjoy watching the world cup together and rooting for Germany (of course)!  Jolyn writes:

Dear Joey & Maggie,

I've been reading your blog for the past 7 months and I have been constantly delighted by its contents. Great job you guys!

Here are a couple of photos of my standard dachshund, Jed, whom i adopted at 3 months and is currently 10 months.

Jed is still a very naughty pup but he never fails to put a smile on my face - even when he gets into trouble. Just one look at him instantly brightens up my day and I love him to bits. I especially love his 4paws-in-the-air gig which he does when he snoozes. ;p

All I can say is after waiting 23 years for a dog, Jed is perfect!

Looking forward to more great posts from you guys.

Woofs n licks,
Jolyn & Jed

Blind Dachshund Wanders Into Traffic; Causes Wreck; Reunited With Humans

Thankfully, neither the driver nor the Dachshund were injured in Liberty, Missouri, when a blind Dachshund found its way into traffic, causing the driver to smash into a curb.  KansasCity.com reports:

There are happy endings.
Police reunited a blind dachshund with its owners this afternoon, about 14 hours after it meandered into traffic causing a wreck.
Police were able to track down the owners through the dog’s rabies vaccination tag. It took a while to reach the owners because they were out looking for the lost dog.
The owners didn’t know the dog had gotten away. It wandered into the street about 10:45 p.m. Monday near Sumac Drive and Claywoods Parkway in Liberty.
A driver in what is believed to be a 1995 Toyota saw the dog, swerved to miss it and ended up striking a curb, said Sgt. Matt Kellogg, a police spokesman. The driver was not injured, but her car was not drivable after the crash.
An officer took the dog and brought it to animal control.

One commenter at KansasCity.com wonders:

Did the reporters at the KC Star take a correspondence course in journalism? .... the owners were out looking for a dog they didn't know was missing.....

Dachshund Collector's Corner: Dachshund Spool Holder

Thanks to an anonymous Dachshundist for sending in a photo of one of their favorite vintage pieces.  This old spool holder is a nice slice of Americana harking back to a time when sewing was a necessity and not so much a hobby as it is today.

What's your favorite vintage Dachshund collectible? Send it in and tell us about it!
