Rita Hayworth Gave Good Face

Who?  Oh, we think you know. Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Carmen Cansino; October 17, 1918 – May 14, 1987) was an American film actress and dancer who attained fame during the 1940s as one of the era's top stars. She appeared in 61 films over 37 years and is listed as one of the American Film Institute's Greatest Stars of All Time. 

Hayworth was a top glamour girl in the 1940s, a pin-up girl for military servicemen and a beauty icon for women. In 1949 Hayworth's lips were voted best in the world by the Artists League of America.
And oh yeah - she was of course a Dachshund Lover.  Seen above with her handsome black and tan smooth 'Knockwurst,' (she called him Knocky), the archives of People Magazine reports that she had two other Dachshunds:  'Lilac' and 'Mink.'


Ms. Hayworth was never better than in the 1946 film Gilda.

Has Fredrick Learned His Lesson?

Meet handsome yet troublesome black and tan 'Fredrick,' who hails from Spotswood, New Jersey.  Hoping to either befriend or belittle a wayward raccoon, Fredrick found himself stuck under a shed not once, but twice yesterday, requiring the assistance of police and firefighters to help him regain his freedom.  Excerpt from My Central Jersey:

The firefighters, using airbags that can typically lift up to 15,000 pounds, raised the shed into the air. But, Fredrick was not eager to leave.
As the owner called to his two- to three-year-old dog, police and firefighters had to use squeaky toys to lure Fredrick out from under the shed, Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nicholas Poliseno said.
Upon their departure, the owner was asked not to let the dog back in the yard.
About one half-hour later, the owner again summonsed officials back to the home because the dog was again trapped under the shed.
“This time when we lifted the shed we found a humongous raccoon under the shed,” Poliseno said. “He was standing in the middle of the shed hissing at us. He was pretty angry. We all jumped back. Luckily this dog made it out of there.”
The firefighters, with the help of the owner and Fredrick’s squeaky toys, again lured the dog out from under the shed.
Helmetta Animal Control was called to the scene, but because the raccoon was so large and they did not have traps big enough to catch the raccoon, the homeowner was advised to call in a private company to get the raccoon out, Poliseno said.


Fredrick looked fine apparently, but his human was advised to consult a veterinarian to be sure.

Hound Group Judging at Crufts 2012

Hi there Boys,

I thought you might like to see the Hound Group judging at Crufts on Sunday. It gets interesting about 24 seconds in. Sadly the Mini Dachshund came fourth - he would have been Best in Show if I had been judging.
I love the blog. I'm in Glasgow, Scotland and, oh yes, I have a smooth black-and-tan called George, who is sleeping on my knee as I type.


Thanks again!  We were searching for some videos of Dachshund judging at Crufts, but it looks like nothing was posted this year.  But the extra Dachshund lap in the Hound judging makes it all worthwhile! 

Texas Bed & Breakfast/Dachshund Rescue Forced To Cease Rescue Operations

Times are tough, and when you've spent $20,000 caring for dogs last year, and then your insurance company says they won't insure your dog-related claims anymore, something has to give.  Meet Carol Hirschi of Seguin, Texas, and a couple of her rescues.  Carol and her husband operate the Mosheim Mansion Bed & Breakfast, which also doubles as a dog rescue of sorts - usually with 10 - 20 dogs on the property, mostly Dachshunds, waiting for their forever home.  Excerpt from My San Antonio:

The dogs are mostly relegated to separate kennel areas or the backyard of the six-bedroom, three-story building that dates from 1894.

“The dogs aren't allowed in the kitchen or the living areas of the house,” says Hirschi, who, with her long, jet-black hair, exudes an intriguing rock 'n' roll businesswoman vibe. “And guests have to ask permission to go into the kennel or backyard to play with them.”

And even that may soon end as Hirschi prepares to “de-dog” the B&B.

Her reasons?

Money.

“We just can't do it anymore,” she says while standing in the backyard, overrun on this damp day by about a dozen canines.

Her current insurer recently informed her that it would no longer cover claims related to the dog rescue operations, nor would it sell her any personal liability to cover her in case a dog bit someone (which has never happened). She called two other insurers and they wouldn't even give her an estimate.

"It's sad," she says. "Only one guest ever complained about barking."
Should a guardian angel appear and offer to write her a big check, she'd reconsider her decision.
But in these hard economic times, she knows that's unlikely.

Retro Dachshund Fun: Snow-Mantled Show-Stopper

As winter fades and we welcome the sprouts of early crocus, let's have just one more look at an adventurous snowy delight:  a 27.5 foot-long Snow Dachshund!   Via the American Dachshund magazine, July, 1972:

This snowy statuary of a 27 1/2-foot Dachshund was the brainchild of James Grinder, son of Mrs. Howard (Blackie) Nygood of Wilton, CT.

Five neighborhood friends, ranging in age from 7 to 14, spent six hours with young Jim constructing the Dachshund-like figure on a Sunday in March at the home of Professional Handler Howard Nygood.

"Granted the head is a trifle small and the color dubious for the show ring," wrote Mrs. Nygood.  "Nonetheless, the remains of this Dachsie and his 'bone' of snow remained on our front lawn until the rains later melted the 'show-stopper' away."

"It was truly a labor of love for my son and his friends, and it was featured on the front page of the Wilton Bulletin," wrote Blackie Nygood.

We would stop traffic too, if we suddenly came upon a 27.5 foot-long Dachshund.

Congratulations to Kim Kilmer and her group Schultz Senior Dachshund Sanctuary for their induction into the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Hall of Fame on March 4th.  Via nj.com:

The sanctuary has placed over 100 dachshunds since it was founded in 2006. In all cases, without Kilmer’s help, these dachshunds would have been left with few, if any, options.
She and Schultz Senior Dachshund Sanctuary were nominated by the Wimsey Family and Dr. Chadd Tindall of Mobile Veterinary Services in Stockton.
The Animal Hall of Fame was established by the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association to publicly celebrate the human-animal bond. More than 80 animals, including dogs, cats, horses and birds have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Kim Kilmer, founder of Schultz Senior Dachshund Sanctuary, hugs her dog, Edna, who was rescued from a shelter in South Carolina. Edna passed away a year ago.

Helping Dachshund Lovers In Need

Dachshund Delights has set up a fundraiser for Sheryle Pickett, a resident of Holton, Indiana, who lost her husband Ron, her home, her two Dachshunds, and her Dachshund-mix in last Friday's tornadoes that ravaged the South and MidWest.  Sheryle & Ron were also adopters and volunteers for Dachshund Rescue of North America. Their Dachshunds, 'Katie' and 'Jules,' were puppy mill survivors, and their Dachshund mix 'Bear' was found as a stray. 

If you would like to help, there are two fundraising channels:

One is a ChipIn donation page (operated by PayPal). You do not need to have a PayPal account to use it. You can pay by credit card or e-check.

The second way you can help is by purchasing raffle tickets.  Dachshund Delights has procured several gift certificates and gift cards for the raffle. Drawing will be held March 10.

Tim Burton "Dachshund" movie 'Frankenwee​nie'

Hi Joey and Rowdy!  I love reading your blog, and enjoyed meeting you at the doxie meetup last weekend!
I just wanted to send you an article about the new Tim Burton movie coming out called 'Frankenweenie'.  It looks like so much fun! Finally, a Disney movie about us Dachshunds!  Here's the link.

Hey Joey and Rowdy! I'm sure you'll be interested in seeing this new Tim Burton stop-motion animated movie.  Looks like it comes out October 5.

Thanks guys for sending the links and everything, we were excited to watch the trailer.  Now, we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but is that a Dachshund?  When we have to ask ourselves such a question, it's usually not.  Is this movie about a weenie dog in name only? 
We did a little bit of research on the subject and found the original Tim Burton Frankenweenie movie played by a real dog was in fact, a Bull Terrier, although he has a Dachshund for a neighbor.  You can watch the whole 30-minute short at youtube.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mr. Burton discussed the name of the film: 

Frankenweenie, though a stitched-together hodgepodge and scientific abomination, is ultimately still a cute little bugger. The goofy name itself was chosen to suggest something harmless. “It’s like a small pet name, a hot-dog kind of thing,” Burton says.

Mr. Burton goes on to say that Frankenweenie has similarities to a dog he had as a child:

As outlandish as Frankenweenie was, it also had roots in a real-life pet dog Burton had while growing up in Burbank. “It’s such an unconditional relationship,” Burton recalls. “A lot of kids have that experience – I certainly had that experience with a first pet. You’ll probably never have it again in your life in that way, it’s so pure and memorable.”
“His name was Pepe — we lived in a Spanish neighborhood,” Burton recalls. “Our dog had this thing called distemper, and wasn’t supposed to live more than a couple of years. He lived much longer than that, which kind of fed into this Frankenstein mythology as well.”
What kind of dog was Pepe? “It was a mix, kind of a mutt, with a bit of terrier, and a bit of something else,” Burton says. “I don’t know what it was. It was kind of a mixture.”

So, that's the unfortunate Long and Short of it All - a major movie about a dog with "weenie" in the title isn't about a Dachshund.  What are the odds?  Not to fear though, we will have our day.

Our new pretty pal 'Penelope' is shocked and saddened by the news.

This toy pile is just too much!  Our handsome friends 'Max' and 'Basil' say:  "Hummmph.  Wake us up when a real Dachshund movie comes out."

Keeping Up With Ali Wentworth, George Stephanopoulos, Daisy, and Charlie

(UPDATE:  Video deleted from youtube by Home Box Office, Inc.)  We've featured American television journalist and former political advisor George Stephanopoulos a few times here in the past, most notably when he lost his Dachshund 'Gilbert,' and when he adopted his new Dachshund Daisy!  Now George's wife, actress and comedienne Alexandra Wentworth, is making the rounds in magazines and television programs talking about and allowing photos to be taken of...what else....her Dachshunds!
Above, thanks to an Anonymous Dachshund Lover for letting us know that Ali appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on February 17th.  Obviously a lot of politics is discussed, but you don't want to miss the good part that starts at about 5:30 in, where she talks about going to Dachshund Lover Donald Rumsfeld's house, and they talk about their love of Long Dogs. 

Here, thanks to our pal who is also named 'Ali' for letting us know that Ali and her mother were featured in the February 2012 Town & Country magazine:  Cabot and Wentworth adore dogs.  Pictured here are Ali's Dachshund Daisy (in her arms), her terrier mix [Dachshund mix?] Charlie (center), and their spaniel playmate Summer.
