More On Dachshunds Rescued From Fire at Dachshund Rescue NW

Of the 16 Dachshunds rescued from the tragic fire at Dachshund Rescue NW, in Spokane, Washington, 10 have found their way into foster homes, and 6 have been placed with the local Humane Society.  4 of the 6 Dachshunds at the shelter will be available for adoption next week.  A true Dachshund Lover, Margo Mossburg, founder of Dachshund Rescue NW, wants to get the rescue up and running again as soon as possible.  Find out more at khq.com.and read even more about the fire on the Dachshund Rescue NW site. 

Sad Times For Dachshund Rescue North West

Our hearts go out to Margo Mosswood, Director of Dachshund Rescue NW and the Dachshund Club of Spokane, Washington, and all of their friends and supporters.  An electrical fire started in the garage yesterday morning, killing seven Dachshunds housed there.  However, sixteen Dachshunds and two cats were rescued from the home.  Mrs. Mosswood has operated the rescue for 17 years, placing 69 dogs this year alone.  Their home has suffered substantial damage.  Read about the tragedy and find contact information at the Spokesman-Review. 

Everyday Is Like Sunday

Meet smooth blue(?) and tan 'Suede,' and his/her human Kelley Skinner, who hail near Chico, California.  They made a trek to Dachshund Sunday, a local meetup/get-together which meets the second Sunday of every month in Chico.  Suede sure is a looker!  Read more about the event at ChicoER.

Innovative Stem Cell Treatment Helps Henry the Dachshund to Walk Again

Meet six-year-old 'Henry,' who hails from Birmingham, England.  Henry "went down" last November, and it was thought that he would never walk again.  His human, Sarah Beech, heard about a new trial at Cambridge University where stem cells would be harvested from his nose and injected into his back to repair his injured spine.  Just a month after the cells were injected, Henry began to walk and wag his tail, taking up to four steps on his own.  We're rooting for you Henry!  It is thought that this treatment could one day help humans with spinal injuries as well.

Days of Beer and Dachshunds

The balancing skills of 'Oscar Mayer' the dog attract the attention of members of the Enzian Schuhplattler Bavarian Folk Dancers at the Oktoberfest Northwest in Puyallup, Washington, yesterday. At 16 inches, black and tan longhair Oscar won the longest dachshund competition part of the festivities at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.  Read all about the wiener races at the event at the News Tribune.

Congrats goes out to the red smooth champ 'Otto Von Schnitzel,' "owned" by Byron Nuffer and Colleen Hurtzig of Arlington, Texas.  Otto was the winner of the Wiener Dog Races during the Eighth Annual Southlake Oktoberfest in Southlake, Texas, on Saturday, October 10th.  Way to go Otto!  See an awesome gallery of photos from the event at the Star-Telegram.

Quick, Somebody Throw Some Holy Water On That Dachshund!

It could not be determined if 'Lily,' Alex Riffee’s miniature Dachshund, could actually read the music. She appeared to be paying close attention and twice barked along at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut, on Sunday, October 4th.  Source.

The Mayor of the Munchkin City

Dachshund Foot Scraper

Speaking of cast iron Dachshund foot scrapers, check out this nice old article we found doing Dachshund research at a local university.  It's from the Chicago Daily Tribune, December 6, 1931:

No dire need, perhaps, of a foot scraper at our door these modern times, when city and suburban civic associations pave our streets and keep our walks shoveled clean (sometimes!) on snowy, blizzardy days.  Still, there are occasions when it has its uses and, of ye olden days, a foot scraper bids one enter.  In many guises we see it.  Here it takes the form of a black iron Dachshund, alertly waiting the moment he can be of service to the incoming guest.

There are many styles of these foot scrapers available in antique stores, flea markets, and on e-bay; some are old, and some are not.  The one pictured above is obviously pretty old, as the article attests. Looking at the photo in yesterday's post, it is pictured in the back left.  It is the granddaddy of all Dachshund foot scrapers, measuring in at 22", and weighing 30 pounds!  Expect to pay anywhere from $100 - $300 for it.  We've heard that some of these may have a maker's mark of some sort. 
The one in front of it, with a marked bump on the nose, is not old, but is nicely styled. The one to the right, facing in the other direction, is a small version of the granddaddy, and has a plate on the bottom to be screwed down - it is also old, and can be found without the plate.

Heading outside to the front porch of the casa de Long and Short of it All are two more available styles.  (Let's lift these up to get a better photo - they're heavy!)  The pudgy one in front is definitely new, and can be found for as little as $10 sometimes; it does not have a marked bump on its nose, and has angular, almost art deco styling in the snout and ears. 
The larger one behind it sort of looks like the granddaddy, but smaller with a curly tail.  We got this at an antique store for a reasonable price of about $50, so we're not exactly sure of its age - most likely later than the granddaddy at least.
Regardless of the age, foot scrapers are fun to have and collect for the Dachshund Enthusiast, and as the Tribune article eludes, they are a welcoming sign to your home - much like the good little Dachshunds inside.

A Note From Joey and Maggie: There's No Place Like Home

Dear fellow Dachshundists,

Thanks so much for the warm wishes and great links while we were on vacation.  While Dad was off galavanting around in Kansas, we stayed at the glamorous Dachshund-loving home of Clara's Canine Care and Pet Photography for about 4 days.  Maggie had a great time, but Joey had bad separation anxiety topped off with diarrhea from the stress.
 
While Maggie was tired when she came home, Joey was just exhausted.  He plopped himself on the bed and didn't move, even while Dad cooked dinner and ate - something quite unusual for the little man.  Dad put the fuzzy blanket on us because the house was still pretty cold, and it was just heaven.  Dad was getting worried about Joey being so still for so long, but finally after a four-hour power nap, Joey was up and around and back to his troublesome self.

Ding Ding The Fishing Dachshund!

We can't make this stuff up, seriously. Meet 'Ding Ding' the smooth black and tan Dachshund who hails from Wuchang in central China's Hubei province. Ding Ding is causing quite a stir in his homeland, as he is now known as a bit of a celebrity after taking up fishing! Excerpt from Ananova:

"I often swim in Donghu Lake, and used to leave him on the bank to take care of my clothes and valuables. But he couldn't stop jumping into the water and swimming with me," his human, Mr. Lin, said.
"When he was swimming, he would bite anything floating in the water, like bottles, foam rubber, or dead fish, and bring them back to the bank.
"But several days ago he suddenly started catching live fish from the lake. Within 10 minutes he had brought back three big fish, weighing more than 3kg."

Savannah Wiener Dog Races 2009

Over 130 Dachshunds competed in the annual Savannah Wiener Dog Races on Saturday in Savannah, Georgia. Congrats goes out to 'Molly' for winning the championship again this year, and to all the dogs who participated! Got separation anxiety? We do. So does this red smooth Dachshund named 'Beth,' who hails from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Her human offers up a nice short story about life after adopting her from a family who no longer had time for her. Here's an excerpt:

She's cute as hell, sleek and black as a seal with caramel markings. Her brown eyes apologize for her mishaps and look at us with unadulterated love. She has a crooked tail because she was the runt of the litter, but we don't mind and she doesn't notice. It works like a metronome for a particularly lively ditty.
