ON THE DAY
ON THE DAY
by Elise L. Levine for The American Dachshund - Twentieth Anniversary Edition, September, 1959
Upon the bench she howled and whooped
And scratched herself 'most hairless,
So, in the ring, she sure looked pooped...
And we looked very careless.
She hunched her back and dropped her head
And squatted on the table;
Her tail was gay, and I must say
She sure was far from able.
To gait with ease or show with style
Her quality had vanished.
She nipped the judge and said, "Oh Fudge!
Why not? I'm simply famished!"
The hours we'd spent with brush and oil,
The days and days of schooling,
The endless walks and solemn talks,
She must have thought were fooling.
Our dreamed of Champ, the little scamp,
Came home without a ribbon...
She walked on air...SHE didn't care...
'Twas US that took a ribbin'!
We took her home and once alone,
Our charming little sinner
Just posed and stood and moved as good
As any top flight winner.
We're sure that we could win at shows
And none could e'er begrudge 'em...
'Twould not be hard...if OUR BACK YARD
Was only where they'd judge 'em!

Dachshund News Roundup!
Proving once again that you can't keep a good dachshund down, here's a dachshund news roundup on a cold and very wet Tuesday, December 9th, 2008. Woof! Above, we've featured artist Dee Dee Murry before, but she's in the news in a nice article over at The Chronicle, out of Centralia, Washington. She is seen here in her studio with her pretty black and tan longhair 'Hallie.' Read all about her award-winning art and love of animals at The Chronicle. In politics, dachshund lover Donald Rumsfeld had a party a few months ago, and The Washington Post noted: The low-key brunch for 50 or so included Democrats and Republicans (although next-door neighbor Dick Cheney was not spotted), according to a guest; a "very relaxed" Rumsfeld greeted everyone by name and directed them to the lawn, where a little fleet of dachshunds zipped through the crowd. Related: Famous Dachshund Quotes: Donald Rumsfeld.
The crisis facing Britain's Kennel Club and Crufts continues after the BBC aired its documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed a few months ago. Still yet to air on BBC America, you can watch the troubling documentary in six 10 minute clips at Daily Motion. Related: The Quest for the Perfect Dog.

And finally, that nice E.B. White Dachshund Bookend by Levenger has SOLD OUT, and is no longer on their website! It was a limited edition of 1,000 which sold out in a few weeks. As a consolation if you didn't get your order in, these new bookends are available at Target.

Dachshunds in History: President Nixon
OK, so this isn't actually President Nixon, but rather a scene with Frank Langella, who plays Nixon in the new film Frost/Nixon, released today in the US. The story goes: It's 1977, and disgraced former president Richard Nixon, played mesmerizingly by Frank Langella, has lost his public swagger. He emerges from the final bout in a series of interviews with British talk-show host David Frost looking beaten down and bewildered.A crowd gathers as he heads for his limousine. Nixon walks up to a woman holding a dachshund and pets the dog, tapping it gingerly, then tugging clumsily on its ear. With this wordless gesture, he conveys a palpable sense of defeat and social awkwardness. Read more at USA TODAY.
Also from LA.COM: Following his last interview with David Frost, Nixon is seen leaving the suburban home where the conversations were taped. Shaken and emotionally vulnerable, he tentatively approaches a woman holding a small dog.
"Is that what they call a dachshund?" Nixon asks the woman in a characteristically awkward moment of public interaction.
Nixon then pats the dog and walks to his waiting car.
"Everybody mentions that moment with the dachshund," says Frank Langella, who plays Nixon in the movie. "It's just 35 seconds, but that's the power of film. There must be something in all of us that responds to that need for some form of contact with another living creature after feeling failure." Read more, including director Ron Howard's take on the scene at LA.COM.

Wiener Dog Poetry

The Walking Weener
Who called me that - "the walking weener" ?
How's your Mama, ever seen 'er?
How dare you, try disparage me?
I've got a bloody pedigree!
Got better papers, than your Granny.
You're due a biting on the fanny.
Aero-dynamic, can't you see?
For swimmin' cross the Zeider Zee.
Lines of tubular design
Make a profile strictly mine.
I'm built real low, close to the ground
For findin' change that ain't been found.
Thanks to our good friend Inc123 for sending in the link to this poem via our pals at artpaw.com, home of fine custom pet portraits. We can't find the original source of the piece. There's another nice poem to read over at artpaw.com.
Who's Your Santa?
We're betting that this dachshund nightshirt is on the holiday wishlists of our friends over at Who's Your Dachshund?....the devilishly delightful dachshund blog taking the internet by storm. This is festive attire for sleeping or lounging. V-neck. 100% cotton. Machine washable. $29.95 at Catalog Favorites. Cast Iron Dachshund Food and Water Bowl
Thanks to our good pal 'Dash' for sending this little gem in.....it would make a great gift for the dachshund on your holiday shopping list! Available on eBay for just $29.99 plus shipping.Product Review: Well, we bought one of these off of eBay a few months ago. It was slightly used, but still in perfect shape, and a great deal for $9.99. The seller bought it for their dachshund who kept barking at it, so it had to go! Nice sturdy construction and smooth lines, but the bowls are a little small for us bigger dachshunds, so we went to our pet supply store to fit it with some deeper ones. 5 stars for kitschy kitchen factor.
There is some debate in the doggie health community that raised dog bowls increase the risk of bloat in a dog. Not sure if this dog bowl is raised high enough to be of any concern....it's not any taller than a normal bowl. Find out more about bloat, including prevention tips at dachshund.org.

"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!" - A Dachshund Love Story

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!
By Mary J. Capps for The American Dachshund, May, 1965
Sonny Boy was his name. He was a black and tan Dachshund, and from his ears back he was a prize winner. His stance and body conformation were excellent. He was sleek and properly low-slung, befitting his descent from champions.
Some harm may be done to this loyal, intelligent and beautiful breed by cartoonists and comedians who, from a lack of fresh material, present Dachshunds as a slightly retarded class of dog. But - as disloyal as it may sound - I realize that Sonny was a caricature of the caricature, so to speak.
From his ears forward, he was a mess, both externally and, I suspect, internally! His ears drooped untidily. His nose, though nicely pointed and trim, had a cleft in the center of the snout, which gave it a bulbous "Rudolph The Red-Nosed" effect. But worst of all was his mouth!
His lower jaw protruded so that his teeth were outside the upper jaw and ball-like tip of his black nose. A ludicrous lop-sided grin completed the clownish appearance. He looked like a dog who had borrowed his master's false teeth and, what was worse - was using them!
The one redeeming facial feature was his eyes. Soft, liquid brown, they seemed to overflow with a teary, drunken, overly sentimental love for the world and everything in it. Despite misgivings about his homeliness, these eyes made us accept him as a gift. We promised never to use him for breeding purposes.
Sonny seemed aware of what a terrible first impression he made, and he worked hard, wielding all his charm, to overcome the instant aversion. With visitors his behavior was as erratic as that of a nervous, over-active three-year-old boy. He was determined to win them over, to receive his petting and the few kind words he deemed his just desserts. Only when he heard those words would he go back to his napping or frolicking with the children.
He managed to get this idea across to even the most hardened pet haters. They might be determined to ignore the beseeching eyes of the eager dog who crouched in front of them, muzzle laid across reluctant knees. But useless their efforts to avoid Sonny's limpid, hypnotic stare. For, unless they capitulated - and quickly - all thirty-two pounds of lead-heavy dog would land with bone shattering force across quavering thighs. A habit we were never able to break, because Sonny seemed to picture himself as a dainty, featherweight Chihuahua, designed specifically for lap lolling.
Love, if not blind, at least blurs the vision to the point of making most shortcomings practically nonexistent; so, to the children, Sonny was canine perfection. I was dismayed when I learned they had entered him in the P.T.A. pet show. Full of confidence, they had already cleared off a spot on the peg board for the anticipated blue ribbon.
As much as I loved him, I knew too well the hilarity poor Sonny's appearance evoked and, since I could not magically make him beautiful, I decided that he and the children would not be humiliated by derisive laughter. I dragged out the outgrown Halloween costumes and material left over from school plays, and I went to work.
On the day of the pet show I seemed to be the only one suffering from nerves. Sonny was his usual bouncy, vibrant self, and the children left for school oozing with confidence - in everything but my ability to have Sonny there at the proper time!
I sat in the fifth row of seats, and I crossed my fingers for luck, as the straggling line of pets and their owners started across the stage. But Sonny didn't need my help. From the time he appeared until he reached the center stage, where he stood up on his hind legs (his only trick) to display the Beatle wig, black suit and starched white bib, there were shouts of "The Beatles - Yeah Ringo - yeah, yeah, yeah!"
The shrieking and applause drowned out the announcer's voice, and I knew Sonny was the undisputed winner of the fancy gold rosette ribbon for "Best Pet."
I don't think the children even noticed that Sara Rainey, with her longhaired cat, Snowflake, wont the blue one, for the most beautiful pet.

Dachshunds Get A Reprieve in the News
This pretty 5-year-old red longhair is one of 117 dogs seized from a home in Lakeland, Florida, last week. The owner has been charged with 123 counts of animal neglect, one count of selling dogs without health certificates, and three counts of tampering with evidence, said the Polk County Sheriff's Department. While Polk County Animal Control has been deluged with calls from the community to adopt the dogs, they won't see new homes for about six months unless owner Carolyn Bragg signs over ownership of the animals to the Sheriff's Office.
