Giant Dachshund?

After a long day waiting for our dad to come home from work yesterday, we went outside to go for a walk and to do our duty. It was a beautiful day in the Windy City; the daffodils have just started blooming, and there were lots of spring smells to be investigated. Who should come strolling down the sidewalk but this big guy, and we had to do a double-take. Was he one of us? Was he a dachshund? Now, we're pretty big doxies ourselves, weighing in at about 20 pounds each. But this guy was HUGE.
Meet giant red smooth 'Leonardo!' Weighing in at 65 pounds, he's a big happy 2.5 year-old boy. He loves to eat the meals that his human cooks for him; his favorite is fried chicken. (We wanna go live at his house!)
We questioned his pedigree a bit, but he told us that he was 100% dachshund, and that his human paid $1,000 for him. We weren't about to doubt the big guy.

He could be a standard from few years back. When we had our first wiener dog in the '80's, the classification for dachshunds were different;miniatures were 15-20 pounds then, and standards were about Leonardo's size.

That's nothing! I came across 2 HUGE dachshunds at a truckstop in Richmond, VA. They were bigger than a black lab, but other than that, they looked exactly like dachshunds. I asked the owner what they were, and she said, "Same as yours." "Uh, I don't think so," I said. She told me the pet store sold them as mini dachshunds, but they just kept growing. I wouldn't have believed her except they looked PRECISELY like dachshunds except for the size.

He reminds me of my late doxie Evelyn, she was also a 100% true dachshund, and grew up to be a very big girl.

my family raised dachshunds for several years and we had one pup that came out looking like this, a monster. ours had alot more loose skin, not as much as a basset but more than a regular dachshund.

ive been looking for more like him ever since, a true hunting dog let me tell you.

This is a real Dackel and probably close to a boar-size hunting Dackel and very strong for original hunt for the badger.
Dackel has parentage that indicate Basset and German shorthair pointer.
We can see his recessive hound gene here & "red" hair- that is also a recessive allele.

Many of the Dachshund in USA are the miniature.
These were brought to USA by soldier and also wealthy lady who want a toy dog- but they are very unsuitable- as Dackel is very naughty and like to play.

Here in Munich we have Wotan- I am not sure if he is still alive- but he was very big and quite famous.

What an amazing photo! This looks exactly like my dog, Tasha. She came to us as a stray. Our vet thinks she is a doxie-basset mix, but I have always thought she was all doxie.

he seems a little jowly and his ears are flared a la basset but he's still a major cutie pie!!

I have an 8 year old red brindle Giant Dachshund. Baxter is 65-70 pounds. He is special and he knows it. He causes quite a stir when we take him into pet friendly stores. Most people are stunned by his size and coloring. I have also seen a silver and blue dapple giant. When you find a source for a giant be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for it.

He's a beautiful dog but looks like a Dachshund - Bloodhound mix to me.

I have a 1 y/o rescue (we brought him home shortly before he started losing baby teeth which made it easier to estimate age) who looks all doxie, but he is 55lbs. Leonardo above has longer ears than my Milo does, but otherwise their bodies look very similar- just different coloring and ear length. Interesting to know that it is possible that Milo could be all dachsund. We always have lots of questions from strangers whenever we're out about his pedigree. I am starting to regret neutering him, as it would be nice to have another one day.

I have to say, it looks like a basset more than a dachshund. BUT, I have seen 2 Giant Wire Haired Dachshunds when I was in Paris. Their owner was from Texas (of all things) and he said they weighed close to or over 90 pounds! They were Dachshunds, NOT bassets! They had Dachshund lines and were almost caricatures of Dachshunds. OMG their muzzles were HUGE! so where their paws! He said he was going to bring them back to the states and breed them as 'yard gators'. From nose to tail tip, had to be close to 6 feet long! HUGE!

It could be an Alpenländische Dachsbracke/Dachshund Mix. The Dachsbracke is the Austrian "giant" cousin of Dachshunds!
Take a look on Google ;)
