The World's Oldest Dog?

The World Records Academy is claiming that 'Chanel,' seen in this photograph, a blonde wire-haired dachshund from Port Jefferson Station, NY, born May 8, 1988, is the oldest dog in the world. Believe it? Your Long and Short of it All hosts tend not to. We've met 20-year-old dachshunds at dachshund meetups. One of our dad's co-workers' 24-year-old dog died last year, so dogs older than 20 can't be that uncommon, right? The dog at this link turned 29 last year.

Besides, that's not even a wire-haired dachshund, that's an English Cream.....puppy. As a matter of fact, we'd recognize that dog anywhere, that's our good pal 'Honey,' the pretty girl whose human is prolific photographer DoxieOne over at flickr.

Here's the original flickr photo. Make sure to check out more photos of Honey over in her flickr set.

This of course begs the question, who's the oldest dog you've ever met? Ever owned a dachshund to be 20 or older? What was your secret to longevity?

Lone Dachshund Among 23 Abandoned Small Dogs Rescued

Small dogs are coming out of the woodwork all across the country. On January 24th in Boyne City, Michigan, 20 small dogs including dachshunds arrived at once to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society, after their owners were evicted from their homes in our troubling economy.
And above, this handsome red smooth is one of 23 small dogs found abandoned on the streets one night this week in Frederick, Maryland, in 12 degree temperatures. Excerpt from the Frederick News Post: Michael Bermudez was driving on Sundays Lane after midnight Thursday when he saw two small white dogs run in front of his vehicle.
With the temperature in the low teens and a brisk wind, he stopped to see if they would come to him or if they had collars. They didn't. He continued home.
After turning onto Bartgis Road, he saw at least 13 more run into the road.
"I've never seen that many dogs at once," he said. "I thought I was hallucinating."

As of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Frederick County Animal Control officers corralled 23 dogs and all are thought to have been owned by the same person, said Harold Domer, Animal Control director.
One dog was found dead after it was hit by a car.

Read all about it, and see a video interview with the Animal Control director at the Frederick News Post. We're woofless.

More Pitbull Trouble

You know, we're big supporters of the "blame the deed, not the breed" philosophy, but how much more of this can we take? Above, Bill Tweedie of Onancock, Virginia, holds his pet dachshund, 'Mimi,' at his home Wednesday. A wayward pit bull fatally mauled his other dachshund Tuesday on a busy town sidewalk while a crowd witnessed the attack.
Tweedie and his wife, Linda, said Mimi has been lost since her longtime companion died. “They are our babies,” she said.

Good Dachshund Karma

Meet A.J. Castañeda and his new pal 'Buddy,' who hail from Salem, Oregon. A.J. was saving his money for his own dachshund and instead donated it to children in Guadalajara for soccer balls. A friend heard about his charitable deed, and bought Buddy as a gift for A.J. Sounds like Buddy is going to have a great home. Read more at the Statesman Journal.

Vintage Dachshund Fun

Who decided who had to pull the sled?

An early 1900's postcard.

The Last Act

If you have a few minutes to spare, don't miss this story by Dr. Melody Heath, DVM, about her struggles to euthanize her own aging Dachshund, red smooth 'Toby.' We don't recommend that you read the article at work. It's available at dvm360, and it's called The Last Act.

More Coyote Trouble

Our hearts go out to red smooth 'Maggie' and her human Sandra Baskins, who hail from Rhodesville, Alabama, for the loss of their dachshund family member 'Buster' to coyotes. Mrs. Baskins let her dogs out at about 6 PM, and they made it no further than the garage when the coyotes attacked and dragged away Buster.
"We have heard coyotes across the road and back in the woods for years, but I never thought they could come into our yard," Baskins said. "Coyotes are no longer a distant creature. They are right in our backyards. You think of coyotes sculking around at 2 or 3 in morning, not at 6 in the evening."
She said Maggie has been devastated by Buster's death. "They were bosom buddies. Everywhere one went, the other went. She misses Buster so much."

Live Longhair Cream Puppies

Live Video streaming by Ustream

Well, there was live streaming video right before press time, but they've just gone off the air. Maybe they will be live when you get a chance to read this, because you don't want to miss mamma 'Lizzy Grace,' pappa 'Gizmo Jazz,' and their five pretty puppies born January 13th, 2009. Chat with their friends and humans over at USTREAM.

Famed Pet Detective Searching for Texas Dachshund

Meet beautiful red longhair 'Dazzle,' who hails from Pearland, Texas. Dazzle went missing 3 weeks ago after she dug out of her backyard, and her human, Gerry Thornton, has hired pet detective Karin TarQwyn to find her. TarQwyn says dachshunds are a very elusive breed.
"Dazzle is more than likely roaming and staying off the streets," she says. "The dachshund is a breed that was bred for hunting. It's a courageous little dog. And this type of dog is more than likely than other breeds to do this."
Read more and see a news video at KHOU.com. We're hoping Dazzle makes it home real soon.

Westminster, There's Only One

That's what they say, but we're still waiting for a Dachshund best in show. We've seen SO MANY terriers. Regardless, just 7 days to go until the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Are you ready? It's always great fun. Above is the 2009 poster available at Westminster.
There were lots of news reports about dachshunds headed to Westminster last year, hopefully some new ones will start filtering in this week.

A Higher Power of Dogdom

We never cease to be amazed by the innate loyalty of the dog to its canine or human friends. Regular readers of The Long and Short of it All have seen the amazing video of 'Sam,' the loyal dachshund who found his way to his human's funeral. You've also probably seen the above video in some form, as it's been viewed about a million times on youtube, where a dog attempts to rescue it's canine pal after it was hit on the freeway in Chile.

We must admit to being a bit floored when we ran across this post about a loyal dachshund on a motor parts discussion board earlier this week:

My next door neighbor, Chip aka Freelowder has had a run of critter problems at his place. About two weeks ago something ate the heads off of 13 of his chickens. Sounds like a skunk but there was no skunk smell. This last week while Chip was off at work, his wife stuck her head out the door and called their two dachshunds to put em in for the night and here comes the black one dragging the red one by the hind leg leaving a trail of blood. She took him to the vet and after referencing his bite chart he determined it was a cat that did the damage. Maybe a Bobcat. Any ideas on sets for the trapping of this critter? I know they are very territorial and curious. Scents? Help if you can. Gotta get em.

There's also the story of 'Truman,' the American bulldog/Staffordshire terrier mix who waited at the side of the road for 3 long days after his dachshund pal was hit by a car.

Which brings us to this morning, and the following video was posted on youtube; get ready to meet smooth black and tan 'Waters':

Youtuber mhudson1137 writes about Waters: Waters was rescued on January 25, 2009 in Walterboro South Carolina. He was a stray and his dachshund best friend had been hit by a car sometime during the night of Jan 24th. He had been diligently waiting for his friend to revive in the road all night, when I saw him under a church sign across the street from his deceased buddy in 40F temperatures and misty rain. as you can see he's coming along nicely.

It seems that modern-day humans sure have a lot to learn from their loyal companions: never underestimate the power of DOG. Have a great Friday.
