Beautiful Dachshund Photos

Meet our handsome friend, 14-year-old red longhair 'Darby.' You may have heard of Darby before, as he's the dachshund who owns Moira McLaughlin, of Dog Art Today, a website devoted to daily dog art from around the world. Darby is also the dog in the Kevin Costner Dachshund Connection.
Darby just got his own photoshoot with photographer Grace Chon, and as you can see, the results were fantastic! See 6 nice photos, and read all about the shoot at Dog Art Today, don't miss it! It's great fun to read how Darby reverted to complete puppyhood with the photographer.

Dachshund Recovers From Surgery Burns

Here's an odd little story - meet 7-year-old red smooth 'Pumpkin,' and her human Scott Herron, who hail from Bakersfield, California. Pumpkin was taken to the vets for an emergency hysterectomy on Christmas Eve, and came out with multiple burns on her body, even her nipples turned black. Hospital staff told them heart monitors malfunctioned. Pumpkin's family asked for a refund on the $740 vet bill, but got a free tube of burn ointment instead. Ouch. Streakers Love Story

Nudists are dachshund lovers too. This is the story of two streakers in love on opposite sides of the planet. Thanks to our good pal 'Clancy' for the story tip!

Find out more at Believe in Destiny.

I Once Was Lost But Now Am Found

We love these "lost and found" stories with happy endings. Meet 2-year-old black and tan wire-hair 'Percy,' and his human's daughter, Sophie Long, who hail from Ryedale, in the UK. Percy went missing on Christmas Day while staying with Mrs. Long, but thanks to his dog tag, he was returned to his humans after he fended for himself for 6 cold days. Welcome home Percy! Read more at the Gazette & Herald.

Wait...isn't this 'Daisy?' Yep, we met Daisy in Monday's Dachshunds News Roundup. The Nevada City, California, dog was missing for 8 long days in severe snowstorms and presumed dead until some snowmobilers thankfully found her. There's a new, more detailed story about Daisy's ordeals at The Union.

Dachshund News Roundup!

Proving once again that New Year's Resolutions are made to be broken, here's a dachshund news roundup on a cool but sunny winter day, January 5, 2009. Woof! Above, meet red smooth 'Molly,' who hails from Lincoln, Illinois. Poor Molly has been the center of a court battle after she was attacked by a neighbor dog and incurred almost $5,000 in vet bills. Her humans, Mark and Mindy Leith, sued the other dogs human for the vet bill, but a judge only awarded the couple $200, the "value of a 7-year-old dachshund." Huh? Both sides appealed the ruling, the other dogs human stating that there is no proof that it was his dog. On appeal, the Leiths were awarded the full amount asked, as the court determined the Leiths “demonstrated how much Molly is worth to them by paying $4,784 for the dog’s veterinary care.” This may well end up in the Illinois Supreme court. Read all the tatty details at The State Journal Register. We're just glad that Molly is OK.

Meet pretty 8-month-old wire-hair 'Daisy,' her vet, Dr. Ryan, and humans Anthony Quinterno and Rachelle Chan of Nevada City, California. It was a New Year's Miracle for Daisy to be found, as her humans crashed the car on icy roads on December 22nd, and Daisy jumped out the car window. She was missing for 8 days in severe snowstorms before finally being picked up by a call to Animal Control. She seems to be recovering well. Read the heartwarming story at The Sierra Sun.

Hugs! Julissa Garcia, 3, of New Deal, Texas, hugs her 10-year-old adopted black and tan, 'Simon,' while her family fills out the paperwork at the Haven Animal Care Shelter on Saturday. Julissa and her family adopted a lab mix, Tammy, along with Simon. Don't older dogs make the best pets? Source.

And finally, a gift for the griller, this dachshund hot dog roaster can be yours for just $12.50 at Roast My Weenie. Fight the battle against burnt, blackened weenies!

Have a great Monday!

Key West Dachshund Walk

One year passes, another begins, it can only be the Annual Key West Dachshund Walk. Woof! The warmth, the sun....it was a dachshund dreamland on New Year's Eve as 165 long dogs took to the streets for the 4th annual event. Above, 3-year-old Lilli-Rose Kolbe reaches out to pet black and tan dappled longhair 'Lola' during the walk. Photo Source.

See some great photos and find out more about the walk at No Direction Home.

Top Dachshund News Stories of 2008

My New Year's Wish for you, dear friend, contains enough of everything to have you want for nothing more.

Well, where do you begin after such a busy year in the world of Dachshunds? We've been working on this Dachshund News Roundup: 2008 for a few days now, and it's nearly impossible to highlight just a few of the heartwarming news stories, the great work of our rescue and educational groups, and all the awesome dachshund events, photos, and videos. We hope you've been reading all year so that you haven't missed anything, it's been great fun. Thanks for all the great story tips over the year.
Of course, there were some sad stories sprinkled in with the good ones, and our hearts go out to all the dachshunds who have dealt with some serious issues this year, and in some cases where dachshunds are now waiting for us at The Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace, little ones.
Probably the biggest story of the year, as it concerns the welfare of the dachshund breed, is the August puppy mill rescue of nearly 1,000 dachshunds in Parkersburg, West Virginia. This may be the largest puppy mill raid in history. How a country of dog lovers came together to the aid of these dogs is nothing less than astounding. Not a single dog was euthanized in the effort. It also shows us that as a country, the United States has a lot of work to do to wipe out puppy mills. Bless everyone who helped rescue, adopt, foster, transport, donate, and volunteer for dachshund and dog rescue in 2008.
The next biggest story to affect the dachshund breed in 2008 was the study which was released in July naming the dachshund as the most aggressive dog breed on the planet. Some readers dismissed the study as a bunch of "hoo-hah," but some wear the badge as an honor. We admit to being a bit shocked at first, but when you combine such factors as lap dog, a genetic marker for fierceness, and the learned experiences of a little dog who is often teased by children, you end up with a dog that could very well have behavior issues. Thankfully, a dachshund bite generally does little damage, but it's an important factor to consider when choosing a dachshund for a companion dog. Of course, many dachshunds don't have an aggressive hair on their long and short little bodies.
In sentimental stories, our favorite was the story and video of Sam, the loyal dachshund who found his way to his owner's funeral, 2.5 days later, 6 miles from his home, across busy highways...one of the most amazing canine stories we've ever heard. Other notables include Annie, who saved her human, and Tootsie, who was found 5 years after he went missing, some 350 miles from his home.
Thanks to all the readers who sent in news story tips and "Dachshund Love" stories over the year. There's nothing better than seeing beautiful dachshund photos and reading about why every dachshund is special and loved. These wonderful stories can be found throughout this link.
We've tried to provide other forms of entertainment throughout the year when news is slow, from finding great videos, photos, poetry, humor, art, and shopping opportunities, to researching dachshund history, posting vintage images, and highlighting famous and celebrity dachshunds. Many of these can be found by clicking on the Favorite Topics links in the right hand column of the website. There's a brand new section in the right hand column, scroll way down, which lists all the famous dachshunds we've profiled so far....pick your poison! There are more to come!

Thanks again for all your support! May you be happy, healthy, and loved in 2009.

Sincerely,
Your Long and Short of it All hosts,
Joey and Maggie

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Agyness Deyn

Who? Agyness Deyn is an English model currently living in New York, hailed as "the fashion industry's next great supermodel" and an "ambassador of British youth culture." She recently announced her engagement to Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes, and was just voted number one in the BBC's Most Annoying People 2008. Oh yeah, she's a dachshund lover. The Daily Mail gave her a ribbing in a story today for wearing a 'Cruella De Vil' coat after sporting an anti-fur sticker just last month. We're hoping the coat is a convincing fake.

We don't know the names of her pretty smooth black and tan dapple or chihuahua, but if anyone has any more information, please send it in!

PetSugar notes that the couture canines sport matching Louis Vuitton leashes and collars which would total about $1,290 for both dogs.

Dachshund Miracles: Daisy's Story

Meet pretty red smooth 'Daisy,' and her human Jessica Cagle, who hail from Carlisle, Arkansas. A fire destroyed their home, and it was thought that Daisy was deceased, but some local heroes changed her fate. Excerpt from The Carlisle Independent: “I knew I had to get as much of our stuff out as I could, before the fire got any worse,” Jeff Cagle said. “I went to the back porch, opened the door and there laid my daughter’s miniature dachshund. It wasn’t breathing so I presumed the dog dead. I picked the dog up and placed it on the ground.”
After returning to the house to retrieve more personal items Cagle said he saw two men over the dog, working with it.
“They gave it CPR and once they got the dog breathing again, they rushed it to the vet in Hazen and put on an IV. I mean, it was a miracle,” Cagle said.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Natalie!

We sure do love these "Dachshund Love" stories, especially around the holidays! Get ready to meet 'Natalie' "Little Bit" Messner, a cute little rescue who has found her loving forever home.

Hello, Boys! My new name is Natalie. I am one year old. I love my new Mom and Dad and my new pet cats, Bash Lee and Captain Spaulding! And they love me, too! Here is my picture, so you can see how pretty I am!
I love my new home, and I have been here for three weeks. My new Mom taught me how to go potty outside, and I have been a good girl. I was born in a kennel and when I was 5 months old, the kennel people left me there all alone and some nice people came and got me. I was scared because I was inside my cage for a very long time. Now I have lots of toys, and good food, and I get to take lots of walks and play whenever I want to. I really love to go to bed with my new Mom and Dad and I love to sleep under the blankets. I am very glad that my new Mom and Dad wanted me and I didn't have to go into another cage in a place they call the pound...Merry Christmas! Sincerely, Natalie "Little Bit" Messner

Merry Christmas!

May All Your Dachshund Dreams Come True.

Wiener Wonderland (to the tune of Winter Wonderland)

Dog tags ring, are you listenin'?
In the lane snow is glistenin'.
It's yellow, not white - I've been there tonight,
marking up my Wiener Wonderland.
Smell that tree? That's my fragrance.
It's a sign for wand'ring vagrants:
"Avoid where I pee, it's my property!
Marked up as my Wiener Wonderland."
In the meadow Dad will build a snowman,
following the classical design.
Then I'll lift my leg and let it go, man,
so all the world will know it's mine-mine-mine!
Straight from me to the fencepost,
flows my natural incense boast:
"Stay off of my turf, this small piece of earth.
I mark it as my Wiener Wonderland."

Be safe and Merry Christmas!
