The Invasion of the Dachshunds

Intelligence Report: 4.26.08 12:00

Thanks to Topo and Bowie for the tip about this fantastic little film from last weekend's Dachshund Spring Fiesta in New York by youtuber eAnthamatten.

"Hot Dogs - Chicago Style" Bark in the Park

Huh? Your hosts, Joey and Maggie, joined a team of wiener dogs and friends: Hot Dogs - Chicago Style, to raise money from their family, friends, and co-workers to support Chicago's Anti-Cruelty Society in a 5K walk along Chicago's lakefront on Saturday. The team of dachshunds and friends raised over $18,000 for the organization, which was founded in 1899, is completely donor supported, and helps over 25,000 animals a year. There were over 3,000 dogs participating at the 14th annual Bark in the Park event. Woof! See more pics at Chicago Dachshund Lovers.

Queen of Denmark's Dachshund Hit by Car

Despite the unmentionable canine controversy surrounding her husband, Prince Henrik, who is also honorary president of the Danish Dachshund Club, hopefully the Queen's beautiful dachshund 'Helike' (pictured above) will have a speedy recovery. Excerpt from The Copenhagen Post:
Helike, Queen Margrethe's two-year-old dachshund, was hit by a vehicle at the royal residence of Fredensborg in northeastern Zealand.
Details as to how the dog was hit or by whom were not released to the press. Helike was taken to Copenhagen's Animal Hospital, where its condition was reported as serious but stable.
The dachshund was given to the Queen as a birthday present by her husband, Prince Henrik, and is named after one of Zeus' three nannies.
If anyone has any more information on the Royal Dachshunds of Denmark (wait - aren't all doxies royalty?), send it in! Get well soon Helike! Helike Image Source

Dachshund News Roundup!

You know fuel prices have gotten out of control when even your dog walker is adding a surcharge to the bill. From the Los Angeles Times: Melissa Roth, owner of Pet Concierge, prepares to take Olive, a 1-year-old dachshund, to the Silverlake Dog Park. With the cost of filling her tank soaring, Roth is planning to raise her fees and charge extra for clients who live more than 10 miles from her headquarters in Atwater Village. Read more about the effect of rising gas prices at the Los Angeles Times.
When you need dachshund inspiration, look no further than red smooth 'Longfellow,' who hails from Tybee Island, Georgia. Longfellow, who lost his leg when hit by a car in 2006, went on to beat out 187 dachshunds to win the 2007 Savannah Wiener Dawg Races! He's back in the news, and this time in a nice story about advances in veterinary care and overcoming devastating pet injuries at msnbc.com.

Dachshund Lovers Support Animal Birth Control

Singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton is the latest celebrity dachshund lover to join PETA in their ABC (Animal Birth Control) campaign. Looks like her dachshund, 'Lord Victor,' is proud of his mom for helping to get the word out about the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Vanessa has this to say about her good buddy Victor: Lord Victor is an extremely handsome little man. Though he is quite humble, he definitely has a mesmerizing effect on the ladies. He is a professional cuddler and world traveler. He's overjoyed when we stumble upon a rare twig on the city sidewalks. He loves to gather these sticks and bring them home, where he then proceeds to chew them up and inevitably regurgitate them. Another pastime that we both enjoy is making cocktails. When he hears the clank of ice cubes, he rushes over to the freezer. I give him a cube, and he proudly prances over to his bed, where he revels in the crunchy goodness.
Find out more about the ABC campaign at getactive.peta.org.

Firefighter Hero Saves Dachshund

Thanks to Marene H. for the tip about this heart-warming story!
Meet lucky 4-year-old red smooth 'Blin,' who hails from Mesa, Arizona. A fire broke out at her home with her humans gone, and the neighbors called the owners, who asked if their pets were safe. The Mesa Fire Department Captain went in to rescue Blin and a turtle, but a cat is still missing. Excerpt from NBC 12 News: Mesa fire says the captain went into the home, and found the little Dachshund named “Blin” in an area where there was a moderate amount of smoke, and pulled the animal to safety. “The dog was actually hiding,” says [Blin's human] Dan Bleak, “and she actually pulled her out… the dog actually bit her, and she still pulled her out.”
Bless our heroic firemen, or in this case, heroic firewomen. Read more and see a nice news video at NBC12 News.

Still More on Acupuncture in Dachshunds

It's comforting to know that acupuncture is an alternative that helps many dachshunds suffering with back issues, or IVDD (Inter-Vertebral Disc Disease). Meet elderly black piebald 'Bea,' a rescue gal who hails from the Stillwater, Oklahoma region. Bea suddenly developed back pain, and surgery did not correct all of her issues. Excerpt from The Daily O'Collegian: Bea’s owners, Brian and Linda Henning, began looking into alternative treatments when surgery to correct back pain in November failed to restore complete use of her bowel movements.
“She doesn’t seem to be in any pain anymore, so her quality of life is really good,” Linda Henning said. “But if we could do something that inspires that nerve to make her bowel movements work, then it would be better quality of life for all of us.”
The Hennings began researching acupuncture to improve not only Bea’s bowel control, but also the use of her back legs, which occasionally drag because her back is not strong enough to support them.
Read all about Bea, and find out more about acupuncture at The Daily O'Collegian.

Dachshund Gets New Grill at the Dentist

Meet 8-month-old red smooth piebald 'Marley,' who hails from the Denver, Colorado area. Marley's lower canines were coming up into the top of his mouth creating painful sores. He could have had some teeth extracted, but in a young pup like Marley, braces are a better option. Excerpt from CBS4: "They call it an orthodontic button and it will just be cemented to his tooth," Huff said. "Then there will be a little elastic chain, kind of like a rubber band."
On small dogs, like Marley, pulling the tooth might cause damage to the entire jaw.
Marley will need about three to four weeks to straighten out the problem tooth, but he will have to wear a retainer. In the meantime, he has to take it easy on the chew toys and the games of tug-o-war.
Read all about Marley's trip to the dentist and see a video at CBS4.

'Aristotle,' a 3 month-old chocolate and tan longhair puppy, was stolen along with cash and a digital camera from the Humane Society of Huron Valley Friday night in Ann Arbor, Michigan, prompting the agency to offer a $500 reward for his safe return. The agency is concerned that he might have medical issues which need prompt attention. Read more at mlive.com.
UPDATE April 24, 7:14 AM: An Ann Arbor police officer was able to track down the stolen dachshund puppy. He noticed a homeless man carrying a dog for the first time, and later saw the pup's photo on the front page of the Ann Arbor News. He had remembered seeing the man getting a free meal at a church, so he went there and asked around to find where he was. Read all about it at mlive.com.

Pampered black and tan wirehair 'Thea Marie' enjoys staying at the Atlantic City Pet Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. About 70% of the hotel's guests are visitors from out of town. Read all about the newer business at Press of Atlantic City.

Finally, smooth chocolate and tan 'Hershey' wants to remind everyone about the dangers of xylitol in dogs, the ingredient commonly found in sugar-free gum. Hershey inhaled 15 mini-sticks of Trident, and soon found himself at the emergency vet. Two years ago, the rescue boy got into a similar predicament with a chocolate advent calendar. Read all about Hershey's misadventures at The Los Angeles Times.

UC Davis Doxie Derby Recap

Ninety-six dachshunds competed in the annual Doxie Derby weiner race as part of the University of California, Davis, annual Picnic Day on Saturday. An estimated 50,000 people turned out for the Picnic Day, of which the wiener races have been a part of for over 30 years! Woof! Excerpt from The Sacramento Bee: Nothing brings Davis together like wiener dogs. Dressed in tiny racing outfits. Competing against each other in the 50-yard dash.
Thousands packed UC Davis' Arc Pavilion on Saturday to cheer the dachshunds as they scampered across the matted gym floor, ostensibly chasing a rabbit, but more often wandering off course or bowing out to sniff each other.
"Oh well," said Geoff Straw, minutes after his dog Ginger casually ran in the opposite direction of the finish line, thereby ending her shot at Doxie Derby glory.
"At least we didn't have to chase her into the stands like last year."
Read all about the event at The Sacramento Bee.
