Remembering Maggie

Two years ago today, we lost our beloved 'Maggie,' your original Long and Short of it All hostess.  They say that time heals all wounds, and to some extent, that is true.  We no longer feel so much pain and sorrow when we run across old photos of this special little girl, but we still miss her very much. 
Now when we think of her, we feel her warmth and goodness and the joy that she brought to us and so many people every day of her wonderful life.  We'll never forget you little girl.
Please take some time today to remember all the little ones in your lives who have gone on to a better place before you.  Appreciate the little ones who are with you now with some extra treats and belly rubs - they are on this earth for such a short time - it's really not fair.

Dapple The Birthday Girl Turns 18

The warmest of birthday wishes goes out to a pretty little girl named 'Dapple' who hails from Fort Mill, South Carolina - she turned an incredible 18 yesterday!  She celebrated with a special birthday cake.  Excerpt from the Herald Online:

There was an 18th birthday with cake and candles and balloons in Fort Mill on Monday – but the hairy teenager was not at Fort Mill High School.
This birthday was celebrated with party hats, but the teen was on all fours. She licked the frosting from the tiny birthday cake, with two candles – in the shape of a “1” and an “8” – right there next to the cake.
“I have the birth certificate to prove it,” said Dappie’s owner, “Rockin’” Randy Mahaffey, a former professional wrestler with a party hat on his big head.
The proof is an American Kennel Club certificate that shows that this tiny wiener dog really did turn 18 on Monday. May 6, 1995, was the date of birth. Read more and see a video at the Herald Online.  Thanks to our handsome friend from L.A., 'Pee Wee,' for sending this in!

Georgia Dachshund Shot At Close Range With Paintball Gun And BB Gun: $7,500 Reward

CBS Atlanta 46 A 1-year-old Dachshund was dropped off at animal control in Clayton County, Georgia last Wednesday after being discovered with wounds from an attack by someone with a paintball gun and a BB gun. According to CBS Atlanta, Bonnie Adams with Partners4Pets took the puppy to a veterinarian, who diagnosed him with a poison-infected wound from a paintball gun and six wounds from a BB gun. The pup's brother was also attacked and sustained cuts or tears to his ears.  Here's an excerpt from the story:

Investigators with Clayton County Animal Control are working on leads in the case of animal cruelty against two dachshunds.

Bullet, a barely 1-year-old puppy, was dropped off at animal control on Wednesday, along with his brother Pistol.

Someone shot Bullet at close range with a paintball gun and a BB gun.

It's a case of animal cruelty that could have cost Bullet his life if Bonnie Adams with Partner4Pets hadn't stepped in.

The nonprofit group took the dog to the Union City Veterinary Clinic for emergency surgery.

"Generally if we're not here, animal control would have to call a vet in to euthanize the dog because they don't want a dog sitting in the back suffering," said Adams.

The vet told CBS Atlanta News Bullet was dangerously infected with poison from the paintball attack when he arrived on Wednesday. He also had six small wounds from a BB gun.

Tubes were inserted into his hip area to help with drainage.

Pistol wasn't shot but he was abused. He appeared to have cuts or tears to his ears and needed medical attention.

 

If you have any information about the abused dogs, you are urged to contact Clayton County Animal Control.  The Atlanta Humane Society announced Sunday it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.  PETA announced yesterday that it has added $2,500 to that amount.

We certainly hope and pray that Bullet and Pistol make a complete recovery and find the loving homes that they deserve.

Gearing Up For Halloween

Over 2,500 spectators cheered on over 400 costumed canines on Saturday for the 22nd Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Parade in New York City.  More than $8,000 was raised by the sponsor, Friends of First Run, to benefit the city’s largest and oldest dog run. Remembering Maggie

Dad's Little Goddess

One year ago today, our beautiful beloved 'Maggie' left this earth.  The pain of losing this little girl, your original Long and Short of it All hostess, and Joey's littermate sister, has never really subsided.  We still miss her and her gentle presence every single waking hour.
In honor of Maggie, and all of the dogs who have left us, we hope that every one reading this will stop and take some time to remember all the joy and happiness that these little guys bring us.  Take some extra minutes today and take your Dachshund for a nice relaxing walk, maybe a car ride to the drive-thru, give them an extra special treat, an ear massage, a belly rub, and tell them how much they are loved. 
We have posted some special reader remembrances of beloved furry friends who have been lost immediately below this post.  Thanks so much to those authors for their kind words and loving thoughts.  We will always remember.
We wrote these next words a few years ago when both Joey and Maggie were gravely ill.  The fumbling sentences still ring true today, perhaps even more so:

I love her beautiful smile when she bares all her teeth. I love his wicked laughs. I love how she can hear other dog's tags from blocks away.
I love his never-ending desire for food. I love her desire to protect us. I love his spots. I love her furry muzzle. I love the long deep stares from his big brown eyes. I love her too-quick glances with that gleam in her eye. I love his short stubby paws. I love her little shaggy toes. I love how he knocks things over with his nose just to watch them fall. I love her muted colors.
I love his playful moods. I love her kisses. I love the way his skin shivers when I caress his side. I love how she has to scratch her back on the sidewalk every time we go outside. I love his yearning for car rides. I love her shy ways. I love his wagging tail. I love how she sometimes lifts her leg to pee. I love how he stretches out to pee. I love it when she bucks like a pony when she's excited.
I love how he cocks his head when he hears a Luna carpet commercial. I love her velvet bump where her dew claw would be. I love his wayward whiskers. I love her propensity to drudge through a puddle on walks. I love his crooked legs. I love her hatred of fireworks. I love his hatred of rain. I love her sharp little teeth. I love the smooth brown spot on the side of his face. I love her when she chews the bands of some underwear she's found.
I love the well-defined muscles on his hind legs. I love her ear when it won't stay down. I love his desire for laps. I love her swaying paws when she sits up so pretty. I love the wrinkles on the top of his head. I love her clicking nails. I love his warmth on a cold winter's night. I love her long soft neck. I love his whimpers. I love her gentle expressions.

We love a good Dachshund Photobomb.  This one was submitted by Melanie Walsh to an article featuring 125 animal photobombs at Huffington Post.

Our beloved departed Miss Maggie bombed us once - Dad was taking a photo of a friend's pack of Dachshunds at a MWDR fundraiser, and right when Dad clicked the shutter, Maggie suddenly jumped up into the shot in a "sit pretty" pose.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Josh Duhamel Teams Up With Petsmart Charities

Transformers star and husband of singer Fergie, Josh Duhamel, is on a campaign to raise awareness about pet adoption.  He's blogging about it on Huffington Post, talking about it at People magazine, and even teaming up with Petsmart Charities as seen in the above video to get the word out.  Mr. Duhamel talks open and candidly at People magazine about the love of his Dachshunds:


All it took was a little Meatloaf for Josh Duhamel to become a convert.
Six years ago, the actor and his wife Fergie were looking to provide a companion for their 1-year-old dachshund Zoe, so they searched online and found another dachshund through a rescue.
"Meatloaf was truly a beautiful dog," Duhamel tells PEOPLE of the aging dachshund he brought into his home. "He was the most lovable, appreciative, soulful little dude. He just turned out to be such a great pet, such a great friend, and ever since then I've been an advocate of rescuing."
True to his word, Duhamel has partnered with PetSmart Charities' High-Five for Pet Adoption campaign, which celebrates the five million pets that have been adopted at PetSmart Adoption Centers since 1994.
Still, many millions more need homes. "I wanted to make aware how much of a problem it is in this country," he says. "I can speak from experience: [adopting] was the smartest thing we've done when it comes to owning a pet."
Rescue hadn't been on Duhamel's radar when he brought home Zoe while working on the NBC drama Las Vegas – and a disappointed colleague took it upon herself to educate the actor.
"When she found out that we bought Zoe, she gave me an earful, and that's when I first heard about pet adoption," Duhamel says. "Ever since then, I tell anybody who's going to get a pet that that's the way to go, not just because it's the right thing to do but because they make incredible pets."
Meatloaf was one of them. "From the very beginning, Zoe was taken well care of," Duhamel says. "We call her the spoiled little Brentwood dog because she never knew any hardship, unlike Meatloaf, who totally appreciated everything. He was just so loving and he was always so consistent." In his advancing age, the dachshund became afflicted by a degenerative brain disease and died on April 1 in his sleep.
"We have his ashes in a box," Duhamel says. "We were going to bury it and put a little memorial out, but we decided we wanted to keep it on the mantle at home because – I dunno, we just couldn't bury him for some reason. We just wanted to keep him close."
The shelter dogs that Duhamel has met since working with PetSmart Charities have also reminded him of Meatloaf. "They all seem to have that same characteristic of gratitude," he says. "I can only imagine what it's like in some of these shelters. When they do get a loving home, they truly appreciate it."

2012 Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby

Just sharing a few pics from our Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby on Saturday May 26th, Memorial Day weekend. We are always of course the main attraction at the Hawaiian Humane Society Canine Game Day where doxies monopolize the park with their loud barks and attention getting sweetness. For goodness sake every year it gets bigger with over 150 island doxies participating this year. It was a blast but now we are exhausted. So happy Memorial Day to everyone and hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend….

Hi guys!  I've written in before about my son Jimmy Dean, on the right, and recently we've added to the family!! Jimmy wasn't too fond of the idea at first, but 3 weeks later you would never know! Rosie, left, is 13-weeks-old and loves her new brother! She's going to out grow him in no time! And they sure love to snuggle.

WEE-ners against NATO

It's been total chaos in Chicago, the world headquarters of The Long and Short of it All, over the last four days with the NATO summit and all of its protesters here.  We couldn't be happier now that it's over. 
But this red smooth wanted to make sure her bark was heard at Saturday's Cross-Town Bark Around Fundraiser sponsored by MidWest Dachshund Rescue.  And it was - she won the costume contest as judged by WGN radio personality John Williams. 
We had an awesome time at this year's event - there were over 1,400 humans in attendance and heaven knows how many Dachshunds - easily over 400.  Fifty volunteers kept the event running smoothly.  We're hoping lots of hard cash was raised to help the needy Dachshunds that come into rescue.

Capitals’ defenseman Karl Alzner’s dogs had way more fun Wednesday night than he did

My master Rick and I were cruising the internet and ran into this article on Yahoo!  It is another glaring example of a poor innocent Dachshund who witnessed a horrible act of vandalism.  Thank-Goodness the Dachshund and his buddy were ok.  Via Yahoo Sports:

Imagine being Washington Capitals' defenseman Karl Alzner Wednesday night. Imagine, say, that you played 37:14, over 11 minutes more than your previous career-high, in a 2-1 triple-overtime loss to the New York Rangers -- that you were one of the players in a game that beat pretty much everyone to a bloody pulp and took 114:41 to decide, nearly twice as long as it was supposed to.
Worse, imagine that, just after you pressured Dan Girardi along the far boards, he swung the puck behind the goal to Brad Richards, who centered to Marian Gaborik for the game-winner at 14:41, and all you could do was slam your stick against the glass and head to the room as they celebrated.
Then imagine that, six hours after puck drop, you arrived at home, sore as all hell, thinking about all the things that could have gone your way but didn't. And then you opened your door to this nonsense.
Alzner tweeted the following photo at 1:57 a.m. EST Thursday morning, captioned with the words, "Dogs not happy about the loss either."

We're so proud of our crew (and we miss our Miss Maggie very much).  Regular readers of The Long and Short of it All may remember this photo we took at last year's “Cross Town Bark Around,” a fundraiser and social presented by Midwest Dachshund Rescue (MWDR).  Well, it was selected in a local edition of the Chicago Tribune to promote this year's event!   We couldn't be happier!

If you live in the Midwest, you do NOT want to miss this year's event which is taking place on Saturday, May 19th, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.  You will be shocked and amazed at the amazing raffles, prizes, and activities.  Via Trib Local:

The event will be inside Buildings 2 and 3 and will be held, rain or shine. The “Doxie Dash Wiener Races” will begin at 2 p.m. All activities, except for the races, will be inside the buildings. Dachshunds, dachshund mixes and their families and friends are invited. Dachshund lovers without dogs are also welcome.
Activities in addition to the Doxie Dash include raffles and silent auctions, featuring Cubs and White Sox tickets, theme park passes, dining gift cards and overnight hotel stays. The event also will feature a Doxie “Kiss-Off,” Doxie Cake Walk, Best Costume and Best “Peanut Butter Licker” Contests and Paw Painting on Canvas for the little Pawcassos. The Doxie General Store will feature one-of-a-kind dog-related items. There also will be “Ask The Trainer” and “Teach A Dog A Trick” booths, a bake sale, nail trims, wiener games and photos with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Pedal Car.
All proceeds benefit rescued dachshunds whose veterinary care, spaying and neutering, food, medication and other needs prior to adoption are funded by MWDR.
Admission is $5 for adults, which includes one free hot dog. Registration is not required for admission but advance registration is necessary for Doxie Dash Wiener Race participants.
