Update on Georgia Dachshund Rescue Story

Remember the recent heartbreaking story of 25 dachshunds which were rescued from a hoarder's home in Georgia? Well, thanks so much to 'Richard and Anna' for an update on 2 of the rescues!

Hello Long and Short of it All! On January 16th you did a feature on 25 Dachshunds that were removed from an elderly woman's home. Little did we know that when we read that story 2 of these girls would be finding their way to our home in PA. We are foster parents for All American Dachshund Rescue that took in some of these doxies. The top photo is of a girl named "Sweet Georgia Brown". She lost her own litter of pups right about the time this one was born...so when she came to our home as a foster she took to this little one like it was her very own. The second picture is of Bella who was adopted out to a wonderful family just yesterday. We thought maybe everyone would like an update, so we wanted to share these sweet girls stories with you.

Dachshund Lovers make great things happen. From the comments of the original story, Kristin noted that Dream Dachshund Rescue also took in 6 of the dogs. Such wonderful work.

Dachshund Humor (slightly saucy)

Three dachshunds - one long-hair, one wire-hair and one smooth are sitting in the waiting room at the vet's office when they strike up a conversation.

The smooth turns to the long-hair and says, "So why are you here?"
The long-hair replies, "I'm a pisser. I piss on everything - the sofa, the drapes, the cat, the kids. But the final straw was last night, when I pissed in the middle of my owner's bed."

The smooth says, "So what is the vet going to do?"
"Gonna give me Prozac," came the reply from the long-hair. "All the vets are prescribing it. It works for everything."
The long-hair then turns to the wire-haired and asks, "Why are you here?"
The wire hair says, "I'm a digger. I dig under fences, dig up flowers and trees, I dig just for the hell of it. When I'm inside, I dig up the carpets. But I went over the line last night when I dug a great big hole in my owner's couch."

"So what are they going to do to you?" the smooth inquired.
"Looks like Prozac for me too," the dejected wire hair said.
The wire hair then turns to the smooth and asks what he's at the vet's office for.
"I'm a humper," the smooth says. "I'll hump anything. I'll hump the cat, a pillow, the table, fire hydrants, whatever. I want to hump everything I see. Yesterday, my owner had just got out of the shower and was bending down to dry her toes, and I just couldn't help myself, I hopped on her back and started humping away."

The long hair and wire hair exchange a sad glance and say, "So, Prozac for you too, huh?"
The smooth says, "No, I'm here to get my nails clipped."

Dachshunds at Chicago's International Kennel Club 2009

Over 6,000 dogs showed up last weekend for the 2009 International Kennel Club of Chicago. Once again we didn't get to go. Dad took about 50 pics though, and there are some beautiful Dachshunds and dogs. He even got to meet Uno the Beagle. Check out the pics in our flickr set.

We waited patiently at home while Dad admired the showdogs. He needs to appreciate what he has.

Awesome Dachshund Videos: Living St. Louis: Weiner Dog Race

From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Ruth Ezell follows a wife and husband team as they prepare to race one of their Dachshunds in the annual Weiner Dog Derby held as part of the recent Soulard Mardi Gras celebration. Now in its 15th year, the Pet Smart Derby is run entirely by volunteers and is looked forward to by many weiner dog enthusiasts.

News From the Motherland

Is the grand age of 73 too old to adopt a shelter dog? Apparently it is in Bonn, Germany. Meet 73-year-old Lilo Weisser, and her new companion, 5-year-old 'Maja.' Mrs. Weisser recently lost her dachshund named 'Dorle,' and was looking for a new friend. She didn't want a puppy, but she had heard that it was hard for elderly people to adopt from the local shelter. Sure enough, even after a family friend said they would take the dog if anything happened to Mrs. Weisser, she was told that she was too old to adopt. This is a woman who still drives, and walks for an hour every day.
So, she contacted the breeder where she got Dorle, and was given a chance with beautiful Maja. The dynamic duo are said to be getting along well after a week, and enjoy 3 twenty-minute walks around the block and a longer walk through the woods every day. Dachshund Found at Center of the Universe

Dachshunds are the center of the universe. So tell us something we DON'T know! Woof, WOOF!

Scientists have located the center of the universe and found a dog there.
A team of astro-nanomoleculists at the University of Freelovenburgspeil, Dortman, charted the infinite and ever expanding universe to pinpoint the location of the Big Bang and the center of it all.
Radio telescope measurements, backed by data from the Hubble telescope and astronauts at the International Space Station looking out the window, reveal barking from the second planetoid from the I2D42Cp star.
However the scientists are unable to explain why the pan-dimensional dog at the center of the multi-verse is a dachshund.

The World's Oldest Dog, Continued

Meet 'Chanel,' a "wire-hair dachshund," who, at 20-years-old, is stated to be the oldest dog in the world. When last we saw "Chanel" in our post The World's Oldest Dog?, we deduced that her picture was a fraud, and actually that of our flickr friend 'Honey.' We believe this new photo above to be Chanel, we just aren't so sure that she's the oldest dog in the world. That said, we hope WE live to be at least 20! Rock on Chanel. Welcome Home Jasmine

Meet 2-year-old red smooth 'Jasmine,' and her humans: 8-year-old Shaela Vidano, and Ellie and Craig, who hail from Marysville, California. Jasmine darted out her door last Thursday, only to be picked up by a stranger "for her safety" and given away to the stranger's cousin. Great detective work by mom resulted in the wonderful reunion seen above. "I would have gone to the ends of the earth to get my puppy dog," said Ellie. Read all about it at The Appeal Democrat.

Miniature Dachshunds at Center of Diet Scandal

With just about a week to go before the 2009 Crufts Dog Show, more drama around pedigree dogs is surfacing across the pond in the UK, and this time it involves miniature dachshunds. As we recall, the broadcast of the UK television program Pedigree Dogs Exposed has resulted in the BBC canceling its coverage of Crufts, dog welfare groups RSPCA and Dogs Trust pulling out of Crufts, and the pet food company Pedigree ending more than forty years of sponsorship of Crufts.
Now Jemima Harrison, the producer of Pedigree Dogs Exposed is back in the news with headlines about "Size Zero Dogs", saying that miniature dachshunds are deliberately deprived of food and water prior to weigh-ins at dog shows. Excerpt from The Telegraph:

The row centres on Miniature Dachshunds, which breeding guidelines state must be no heavier than 11lbs – a limit drawn up in the days when the dogs were sent down rabbit holes.
The Kennel Club has banned weigh-ins for the breed at Crufts in response to fears that owners were denying food and water to dogs in the hours before they were due on the scales. It has also relaxed the regulations for other shows, leaving it to individual judges to choose whether to hold a weigh-in or not.
It recommends that bowls of water be provided to prevent the dogs from dehydrating but critics say this has done nothing to stop the problem.
"This is Size Zero for dogs," said Jemima Harrison, producer of a BBC documentary which in 2008 exposed breeding techniques which led to genetic illnesses that affect pedigree dogs.
"I am inundated with owners and judges who say they are seeing dehydrated or malnourished dogs on the scales, all for the sake of a rosette. It sounds funny to think of dogs having the same issues as fashion models but it is a serious welfare issue.

Puppy Mill Dogs Find Love

This handsome red smooth dachshund is one of nearly 300 dogs rescued from a puppy mill near Sparta, Tennessee last week. He is one of 25 of the dogs that were taken to Charleston, South Carolina. His new human Anna Bowling, seen here, had tears in her eyes when she adopted him. "As far as looks go he's certainly one of the better ones," Bowling said. "Some of them were losing hair and so sad looking. Now we have to find a suitable name." The remaining 13 rescued dogs in Charleston will need to be spayed or neutered and pass a medical check-up before they are offered for adoption. Read more at The Post and Courier.

D-A-C-H-S-H-U-N-D Trouble

How do you spell "Dachshund?" Answer: W-I-E-N-E-R-D-O-G. Or is that W-E-I-N-E-R-D-O-G? Regardless, last year's spelling champion Meredith Young, right, doesn't look so pleased after misspelling "dachshund" as soon-to be champion Austin Crane correctly spells the same word while tracing each letter onto his left palm during the 40th round of the Coconino County, Arizona, Spelling Bee Saturday morning.
Excerpt from the Arizona Daily Sun: From Round 12 to Round 38, they battled toe-to-toe: defending champion Meredith Young vs. newcomer Austin Crane.
No one else was left in the 2009 Coconino County Spelling Bee. Meredith, poised and confident, and Austin, ghost- writing words in his palm, rolled through words such as "ameliorate," "pernicious" and "ersatz."But in Round 39, it was the veteran who stumbled. Meredith, a home-schooler, misspelled "dachshund," leaving Austin, a sixth-grader at DeMiguel Elementary School, all alone with the final word.

Hermaphrodite Dachshund Needs Support and Well Wishes

Meet beautiful 4-month-old black and tan smooth dappled 'Marbles,' who hails from the Los Angeles, California, area. As fate would have it, Marbles was born without a tail, and the sheath of his penis didn't develop all the way. The sheath is open with his penis hanging down from it, leaving it prone to infection if not kept clean. The puppy also has testicles, and a vagina in which she urinates out of.
This story has been under discussion on several dachshund boards, and when we first read it, we didn't know how to handle such a delicate topic for inclusion on The Long and Short of it All. Our LA friend, Johnny Ortez, LA Small Dogs Examiner, (who we got to meet last year when he came to Chicago to Bark in the Park with us!), has handled the story quite well however, over at Examiner.com.

Timberwolf Trouble in Sandstone, Minnesota

It's with a heavy heart we report that 5-year-old dachshund 'Jenny' was killed by 2 timberwolves last Thursday in Sandstone, Minnesota.
The wolves belong to the Minnesota Wildlife Connection. Founder Lee Greenly says the business provided the animals for a photo shoot near the Ziegler's property when the wolves wandered a little too far.
It sounds like Mr. Greenly was sincerely sorry about the incident, as he bought the Zieglers a new dachshund puppy. Read the troubling story and see a news video at WDIO.

We love to hear about the special dachshunds that touch our lives. Get ready to meet beautiful smooth black and tan rescue 'Polly,' who hails from Huntsville, Alabama - another great rescue who found her perfect forever home. Thanks so much to her mom Nolen Clark for sending in her story!

Polly had been a puppy mill breeder dog & apparently had never played outside. She took to digging immediately, and I let her. Now she hunts, studies goldfish, helps me garden, cuddles, bosses around 2 large GSDs (German Shepherds), suns, and all things doxie.

Poor thing had had so many puppies, last year she need mesh for her hernia repair. She also has worn down her canines from chewing desperately at her metal cage. Luckily Southern Dachshund Rescue, rescued her & gave her foster care until we were matched.

Yes,older doxies do bond tightly. Took little time & no time for her to establish her alpha status. She actually bit my male GSD on the ear & the issue was settled. Now she bosses them around but chooses to cuddle with the male "plushie" when it's cold enough-- not that she doesn't have a daybed with 5 blankies and at least that many pillows. (We use aerobic steps, so she doesn't have to jump so high.) Wasn't long until she gave up the comfort of a kennel for the softness of blankie and pillows-- the more the better. And best yet, cuddling with me with her warming, softly snoring nose blowing right in my ear.

Last week, I thought she was dying. She was without normal responses and reactions. Luckily, it turned out to be "rib eye disorder'-- the little sneak has stolen two thick ribeyes from the grocery bags & eaten about 25% of her body weight-- 24 hrs later she had distended tummy & I found her reactionless. A few pills and loving vet later, she blasted out the back door the next morning, to inspect the goldfish and those darn koi.

How Dachshunds Got Their Funny Legs

Those short, thick, stumpy, wobbly, knobbly, stubby, crooked appendages. One of the many things we love about the dachshund. How did they come to be? Science magazine offers up a clue, and here's an excerpt: In 2007, geneticist Elaine Ostrander of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and her colleagues found a single gene in short dogs that regulated the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1); the gene was missing in giant breeds.
Ostrander's lab has homed in on the "short" gene in detail and found a new surprise: Not only does it make dogs small, but some dogs carry an extra genetic element inserted by chance into chromosome 15. The element--a so-called retrogene--changes the expression of IGF-1 and gives the dogs the distinctive short, bowed forelimbs of chondrodysplasia.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Julie London

Who? Julie London (September 26, 1926 – October 18, 2000) was an American singer and actress. Best known for her smoky, sensual voice, as a singer she was at her peak in the 1950s; her acting career lasted more than 35 years, ending with the role of nurse Dixie McCall, RN, on the popular TV show Emergency! (1972–1979).

Born in Santa Rosa, California, as Gayle Peck, she was the daughter of Jack and Josephine Peck, who were a vaudeville song-and-dance team. When she was 14, the family moved to Los Angeles. Shortly after that, she began appearing in movies. She graduated from the Hollywood Professional School in 1945. Her first marriage was to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame. Her widely-regarded beauty and poise (she was a pinup girl prized by GIs during World War II) contrasted strongly with his pedestrian appearance and streetwise acting technique. This unlikely pairing arose from their mutual love for jazz music; their marriage lasted from July 1947 to November 1953. They had two daughters, one who was killed in a traffic accident in the 1990s and one who survived her. In 1954, having become somewhat reclusive after her divorce from Jack Webb, she met jazz composer and musician Bobby Troup at a club on La Brea Blvd. They married on December 31, 1959 and remained married until his death in February 1999. Together, they had one daughter and twin sons.

Dachshund News Roundup!

Proving once again that there's no other love like Dachshund Love, here's a dachshund news roundup on a seasonably cool Monday, February 16th, 2009. Happy President's Day. Woof! There were a couple of big pet-related Mardi Gras celebrations over the weekend, with Barkus Pet Parades in both New Orleans and St. Louis. The St. Louis event also featured Wiener Races! PETA. Love 'em or hate em, they know how to get your attention. PETA says that Wieners come out Winners by not being asked to run across the ice in Columbus, Ohio. Here is their press release: Ohio State University Athletics Department marketing director Brian Flenner has earned a Compassionate Action Award from PETA for canceling a "dog race on ice" promotion scheduled for last Sunday's Buckeye vs. Notre Dame hockey game. He made the decision after learning that dachshunds are particularly prone to painful hip, joint, back, and leg problems. Promoters had been seeking dachshunds to participate in the race.
PETA points out that in addition to the risk of serious injury to the dogs--who have been bred to have spines that are too delicate for strenuous activity and sometimes snap--the bright lights, screaming fans, and loud noises that make sporting events exciting for fans can also be stressful for small dogs.
As a token of its appreciation, PETA has also sent Flenner a box of vegan chocolates.
"We applaud OSU's Athletic Department for recognizing that little dogs and ice races don't mix," says PETA Assistant Director Kristie Phelps. "With this compassionate decision, the Buckeyes scored big even before the face-off."

Meanwhile, we're guessing that the 2nd annual Sioux Nation Pet Clinic "Wiener Dog Ice Races" took place as planned for last Saturday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. How do you feel about dachshunds racing on ice? Is PETA on the mark here? It seems as though they are against any wiener races, but do you think dachshunds should be running on ice?

Jessie Makes Appearance on 'The View'

Oh. My. Dog. Two days ago 'Jessie,' Westminster's Longhair Best in Breed, was on Good Day New York, and yesterday he was on The View! Apparently he lives in the condo right above Barbara Walters. You can watch the February 12th episode at abc, he's at the beginning of the show. We had to download something to watch it, but it didn't destroy our computer or anything. Thanks to our pals 'Milo' and 'Otis' for the tip!
Your Long and Short of it All hostess 'Maggie' has gone over the edge because of her major crush on Jessie. She's plastered posters of him all over her crate, isn't eating normally, and has become a little distant. Her littermate brother 'Joey' is obviously concerned.

Pet Trends with Maggie Gallant: Meet Up!

We LOVE to go to dachshund meetups. We've been going to local, and not so local, meetups every month for about 4 years now. It's always nice to sniff our friends, see all the dachshunds, and meet new humans. Dad says we're better socialized as a result, but we thought we were just fine to begin with. Regardless, it's great fun.
'Dixie' the dachshund, who hosts Pet Trends with her human Maggie Gallant at Animal Planet, went to a local meetup, and has the poop on "the social trend sweeping the nation" in a nice video at Animal Planet. Make sure to check out more videos with 'Dixie' while you're there.

30 Dachshunds Rescued From Poor Conditions in North Carolina

Meet three of about 30 dachshunds who have been rescued from deplorable conditions from a kennel in Plymouth, North Carolina. The dachshunds will be nursed back to health by Ann Robinson, who owns and operates Sand Hill Beagles Rescue in neighboring Pinetops, NC.
Robinson, 57, described the dogs as being held in "rabbit cages," with many of the spaces suspended in air, with the dogs stepping on chicken wire. She also said several of the spaces the dogs were being kept had high-wattage light bulbs inside with limited ventilation.
Some of the dogs suffered burn marks from the bulbs with the spaces too cramped for the grown dogs' elongated bodies to stretch out, Robinson said.

Exhausted Westminster Dachshunds

Well, the 133rd Westminster has come and gone, and the Dachshunds are rightly exhausted. Congratulations to America's new top dog, the Best in Show, 10-year-old 'Stump,' a Sussex Spaniel. What a nice surprise.....old dogs are beautiful too!

Meet your great great great grandpa. From the book Dachshund by Ann Gordon: In the late 1930s, Josef and Maria Mehrer established the von Marienlust Kennel in West Hempstead, New York. This was a defining moment in the development of the Dachshund in the twentieth century, particularly in smooths. Josef and Maria were knowledgeable about the breed, and Josef was an astute breeder who had the knack for knowing what sires and dams clicked to produce the best offspring. Many of the breeders of that time founded their kennels using von Marienlust stock. A large number of our present-day smooth Dachshunds can be traced back to von Marienlust bloodlines.

We're really not surprised that a Dachshund didn't take the Hounds, why should anything ever change? Why should a Dachshund ever take a Westminster Best In Show? Baby Badger Saved From Freezing Temperatures

Gather 'round, badger dogs. Meet 5-day-old 'Snowdrop,' who was found abandoned in the snow in Torquay, Devon, in the UK. A homeowner heard her whimpering in the garden and rescued her from the brink of a certain cold demise. She is currently being nursed back to health at Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre at Highbridge in Somerset.

Red piebald 'Sam,' and his human Christopher Marlowe had a portrait painted yesterday at the first Pooch Party at Spencer's Restaurant in Palm Springs, California, by artist Chris Davis.
