THE DACHSHUND

THE DACHSHUND

My funny features may abound,
Short legs, long body, low to ground,
But I'm about the perfect pal
For man or woman, boy or gal.
I'm gentle, very playful, kind.
I housebreak fast
'Cause I'm refined.
I'm smart but never sly or foxy,
No!  Don't underrate the Dachsie!

'The Long and Short of it All' Turns Six Years Old

Your hosts 'Bette' and 'Rowdy'

It's not the most exciting Dachshund news in the world at the moment - nothing you should go and shout from the mountaintops - but 'The Long and Short of it All' turns a whopping 6-years-old today!  That's an eternity in the world of the world wide web.
We just got back from an extended vacation, and we're still catching up with everything that has happened while we've been off sunning ourselves.  Thanks for all the emails and comments about some pretty exciting Dachshund news events that occurred while we were away.  We'll get to those later this week.  In the meantime, it's our anniversary - so we're gonna relax and work on our tummy tans just one more day.  We gotta look hot for speedo and bikini season.

Dachshund Dearest

TURMOIL AT THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT ALL HEAD OFFICE. Chicago, IL: While sunning herself on vacation, your new hostess 'Bette' has been catching up with all The Long and Short of it All archives and notes all the seemingly unnecessary attention to "legendary film star" Joan Crawford.   She must agree with her namesake, actress Bette Davis, who once quipped amongst other similar sentiments:  The best time I ever had with Joan Crawford was when I pushed her down the stairs in 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?'

Bette's sure got some spunk.

It seems like our work is never done.  GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - APRIL 30: Millie the Dachshund waits in the treatment area at the small animal hospital at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow on April 30, 2013 in Glasgow, Scotland. One of only two veterinary schools in Scotland, University of Glasgow School Of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1862 by James McCall, it attracts students and researchers from around the world where they train over a 5 year course to become Veterinarians on a broad range of animals large and small. Dapple The Birthday Girl Turns 18

The warmest of birthday wishes goes out to a pretty little girl named 'Dapple' who hails from Fort Mill, South Carolina - she turned an incredible 18 yesterday!  She celebrated with a special birthday cake.  Excerpt from the Herald Online:

There was an 18th birthday with cake and candles and balloons in Fort Mill on Monday – but the hairy teenager was not at Fort Mill High School.
This birthday was celebrated with party hats, but the teen was on all fours. She licked the frosting from the tiny birthday cake, with two candles – in the shape of a “1” and an “8” – right there next to the cake.
“I have the birth certificate to prove it,” said Dappie’s owner, “Rockin’” Randy Mahaffey, a former professional wrestler with a party hat on his big head.
The proof is an American Kennel Club certificate that shows that this tiny wiener dog really did turn 18 on Monday. May 6, 1995, was the date of birth. Read more and see a video at the Herald Online.  Thanks to our handsome friend from L.A., 'Pee Wee,' for sending this in!

Wieners Wieners Everywhere

It's Friday, and it's time to sing!  Via NYU Local:  Wiener dogs stormed Washington Square in New York last Saturday for the Spring Fiesta of the Dachshund Friendship Festival. The gathering let the little guys run with dogs of their own size; and with numbers came power. So many dachshunds played around the fountain that Shakespeare in the Square’s Taming of the Shrew couldn’t actually go on in the park. The performance was moved to NYU Stern’s Gould Plaza. But hey, we’ll take wagging wieners over Tischies any time. The climax of the day’s event involved everyone lifting their wieners in the air to sing the Dachsong.  Go ahead.  Click that link and sing!

Are you singing yet?

It's All About The Birthday Boy

Woof!

Your Long and Short of it All host 'Rowdy' turns 2 today!  He got to sleep in several minutes later than normal this morning and enjoyed a great little walk in the park this afternoon.  His favorite birthday present ever is having his new little sister 'Bette.'  Dad might have stopped on his way home tonight to pick up some raw chicken feet to treat the Dynamic Duo on Rowdy's special day.  And that's cause He's such a good boy.

Wirehair Wednesday: RAT Edition!

It's Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and you're tuned in to www.dachshundlove.blogspot.com and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  And boy do we have a good one for you this week:  it's the RAT EDITION!  There was a similar story and video last fall, Dachshunds On Rat Patrol in NYC, but this time it's been picked up by the Associated Press.  Good Dogs!

NEW YORK—Bodies tensed and noses twitching, the dogs sniff the hunting ground before them: a lower Manhattan alley, grimy, dim and perfect for rats. With a terse command — “Now!” — the chase is on.
Circling, bounding over and pawing at a mound of garbage bags, the dogs quickly have rodents on the run.
“Come on ... I mean, ‘tally ho!’ says one of their owners, Susan Friedenberg. In a whirl of barks, pants and wagging tails, dogs tunnel among the bags and bolt down the alley as their quarry tries to scurry away.
On a couple of recent nights, an eclectic group of ratters converged on an alley near City Hall about an hour after sunset. The lineups included two border terriers; a wire-haired dachshund; a Jack Russell terrier/Australian cattle dog mix; a Patterdale terrier, an intense, no-nonsense breed that’s uncommon in this country; and a feist, a type of dog developed in the American South to tree squirrels.   Read more at The Star.
