Joey's Corner: Piebalds in Nature

Your Long and Short of it All host 'Joey' would like to share the beauty of the Piebald as it appears in animals all around the world. A Piebald is an animal that has a spotting pattern of large unpigmented (sometimes expressed as white) areas and normally pigmented patches.  The colour of the animal's skin underneath its coat is both the natural color and pigmentless.  This alternating colour pattern is irregular and asymmetrical. The national bird and symbol of the United States - the bald eagle - has a name derived from the term Piebald.
One day, even the Dachshund Club of America may appreciate the Piebald Dachshund for its astounding beauty, and allow them to openly compete in Dachshund conformation trials. For a history of the Piebald pattern in Dachshunds, click here.

  4. hear hear. I love piebalds. I always thought, too, that there should be a standard and mini category like they sort of have with beagles at 13 and 15 inches. it helps increase the odds that a doxie can win the group if there are more of them in the ring!!! :)
