Dachshund Parade

And you thought we were kidding yesterday when we said that Dachshunds were chauffeured in stretch limousines for the events at the National Dachshund Races in Findlay, Ohio over the weekend. Finally, all the respect we deserve.

Turn up the volume and bask in the glory.

Dachshund News Roundup!

Proving once again that weekends are for Wiener Dogs, here's a Dachshund News Roundup on a surprisingly cool blustery fall day, September 28, 2009 (your Long and Short of it All host 'Joey' is not happy about the weather shift!). Kicking things off, check out the handsome red smooth piebald above! His name is 'Prince Rusty,' and he's having a great time running around with his human, Taylor Wood, on Saturday at Dog Fest 2009 in Springfield, Missouri. Over 1,000 humans and 500 dogs attended the event. Read all about it the News-Leader.

Heading east to Cape Cod, it was the second annual Doxie Days on Saturday in Dennis, Massachusetts. Meet the organizers of the event, black and tan longhair 'Isabella' and her human Roseanne Smith. There was a Blessing of the Dachshunds, vendors, rescue organizations...lots of Dachshund Love on the beach! Don't miss all the photos at CapeCodPets. And with an intro like this, you know the write-up is good:

What do William Randolph Hearst, E.B. White, Jack Ruby, Andy Warhol, Queen Victoria, Donald Rumsfeld and Pablo Picasso have in common? Surprise! They were all owners of dachshunds. The popularity of this breed, which is ranked seventh in registrations by the American Kennel Club, crosses all cultural stratas.

Heading just ever-so-slightly west of the Cape, it was the Third annual Dachshund Day held in Westport, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Over 40 Dachshunds attended the event, which included a parade, raffle, social time, and agility demonstrations! Read all about it and see lots of pics at the Herald News.

Back in the Midwest, red smooth 'Bendi Sue' ran for the glory of it all on Saturday at the National Dachshund Races in Findlay, Ohio. This huge 2-day event featured a parade and Dachshunds chauffeured in stretch limos! We're sure that more pics will be posted soon on the official site, but this pic is from The Courier.

And back to Missouri, participants in the Dachshund Derby get off to a running start Saturday at the Old Munichberg Association Oktoberfest celebration in Jefferson City. Read more about the event at the News Tribune.

And finally, heading south to sweet warm Florida, Dachshund Rescue of South Florida held A Dog's Day In Venice Yappy Hour in Pembroke Pines. Looks like everyone had a great time! We're guessing that the $2 wine or beer and $5 martinis were a hit!

Have a fantastic Monday!

Reunited, And It Feels So Good

Meet 5-month-old smooth black and tan 'Mango' and his human, six-year-old Abi Sharma, who hail from Penticton, BC, Canada. Abi had his world turned upside down on Tuesday when he was outside playing with his puppy Mango, and a woman stopped to pet his dog and then took off with it! Poor Abi was scared to tell his parents that someone had stolen his dog! Excerpt from the Penticton Western News:

“My son was so scared and upset, he even said he never wants to play outside again,” said Sam Sharma. “Who would do such a horrible thing like this — stealing a puppy from a little boy?”
Luckily the answer to Sam’s question was answered, as the little boy and his best friend were reunited on Wednesday afternoon.

The most important thing is that Mango is back home, but read the whole story, including the lies the perps told when confronted by Abi's Mom and a friend at the Penticton Western News.

Welcome Home Mango.

And have a great Friday!

Dachtoberfest Is In Full Swing

Our favorite month of the year, Dachtober, hasn't even begun, but the festivals sure have. Here, Dackels dash at the Frankenmuth Oktoberfest Saturday afternoon in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The fest also featured a Dachshund beauty pageant and polka dancing, "with a highlight on beer."
Us Germans know how to party.

Von Linderhausen Meets Badger

Von Linderhausen Meets Badger
by SYDNEY ALLEN for the American Dachshund magazine, August, 1967.

As our Microbus moved along through a sagebrush flanked section of the highway that parallels the Colorado river east of Grand Junction, I heard my baby sister give one of her familiar hunger signals. Dad parked the car, and while Mom carried out a feeding operation, my brothers and I went with Dad for some exploring along the river.
Our companion on this trip was our family Dachshund, who bore the pretentious name of Von Linderhausen.
I skipped stones along the surface of the stream. Then I began to notice some of the birds that were flying up and down the river to their evening roosts. All the while, Von Linderhausen strained at his leash, looking for animal signs in the soft mud along the banks.
Then, suddenly, I saw a small animal a little way ahead. It was apparently searching for food along the margin of the water.
I thought it might be a skunk. Then I thought it might be a small bear, or even a cat. Von Linderhausen acted as though he knew what it was. He whined and lunged at the end of his chain.
Then I recognized the animal. It was a badger. I had learned from my grandmother only a few days before that Dachs means badger in German. I had never seen one in the wild before.
Now I had a chance to test the results of all that breeding the ancient houndmasters had put into our dog's pedigree. I found it easy to persuade Dad to let me turn Von Linderhausen loose.
Von Linderhausen hurled himself forward as fast as his legs would carry him. It seemed that he was going to fly right into the alerted badger's claws and teeth.
But if the dog was brave, so was the badger. It was caught in an unfavorable terrain. Its normal method of defense - to dig itself out of sight - was out of the question in the soft mud along the streamside. It couldn't run away, since a sharply rising bank lay between it and the open brush.
With no other choice, the badger stood its ground like a brave warrior, determined to fight this impudent intruder.
It put up such a heroic front that even an impetuous fellow like Von Linderhausen had second thoughts. He put on the brakes just before he made contact with those menacing teeth and claws. Last-minute prudence saved him from the scars of combat. But at that moment I remembered reading in the American Kennel Club's dog book that judges aren't to penalize Dachshunds who show such blemishes.
The badger spat, growled, and hissed, sparring with its paws like a boxer. It looked as if it was saying "O.K., dog, come right ahead. I can handle the likes of you."
Von Linderhausen kept moving closer, snarling and barking. A tremendous excitement had come over him, as though all his breeding and instincts, nurtured through the centuries, were finding an outlet.
After a few minutes of this standoff, the beeping of our Microbus horn told us that Mom and the baby were ready to go to Denver.
However, Von Linderhausen wasn't ready. He refused to obey my commands, so I used a long piece of driftwood to separate him and his enemy. After I knocked him sprawling into the icy water a few times, he remembered a little of his obedience training and allowed me to snap the leash onto his collar.
But on the way to the car, he kept turning around to snarl tough-sounding dog language back at his adversary.
"Well, I guess our dog really is a badger hound, eh?" Dad observed.
Von Linderhausen agreed. It was nearly an hour before he calmed down, but by the time we got to Denver he was sound asleep, probably dreaming about that confrontation on the banks of the Colorado.

END.

The Longest Dachshund in the World

longest dachshund in the world

Meet 'Hurricane Ike,' or 'Ike.' He's a 10-month-old friend of ours from Chicago. He's sleek, muscular, swift, Standard, and Smooth. Oh yeah, and he's loooooong. Now this photo isn't so hot, and doesn't do justice to his longitude, (he's making a turn in this photo and his hind legs are trying to catch up), but we've met thousands and thousands of Dachshunds, and girth for length (he'll probably fill out some more), Ike is the longest dog we've ever seen.

Ike is so long, when he backs up all you hear is beep, beep, beep.

Hurricane Ike must've stretched out THIS Hurricane Ike, and watching him play at a local Dachshund meetup on Sunday, he's 100% true to his name; he's a 20-pound powerhouse whirlwind of goofy longtasticness.

He's a real traffic-stopper.

Dorm Dog

Meet 'Harrison,' the smooth black and tan who lives in the Dorms at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with his Dachshund brother 'Larry.' This will be Harrison's third year of living in the dorms with his humans Paula Czirr and Ty Caraway, as Miss Czirr is a Residence Life manager there. Excerpt from the Sentinel:

Last winter during Christmas break, the dogs were playing catch with Czirr down the long hall when Harrison suddenly stopped at one room. Czirr thought that was interesting and went to check the room. It was discovered that a resident had broken into his room when the dorms were shut down.
Although Harrison makes a great watchdog, he's also a great companion for the residents of the dorms.
"He's kind of like that teddy bear that kids have when they're little, except he's alive and he licks your face," said Jeff Howard, senior resident assistant.
For many students coming to the residence hall their first year, it's a big step, and it can be very hard for students to cope.
Harrison has played a big part for many students making that transition. With students being homesick, it has proven to be very helpful having Harrison in the dorms when students are in need of a pet.

Read all about the good work Harrison does at the Sentinel.

Dachshund Puppy Has Sewing Needle Removed From Brain

Meet lucky little 'Lucy,' a cute little black and tan smooth puppy who hails from Augusta, Georgia. Lucy got into the sewing supplies, found a pin cushion, and you know what happened next: a 1.5 inch pin lodged itself into her brain.
Her humans trekked to Columbia, South Carolina, where the pin was removed at SC Veterinary Specialties. Excerpt from WECT6:

Vet surgeon Dr. Jonathan Suber was there to help pull the needle out.
"Ultimately, we just cut a small hole under her mouth, reached up and pulled it straight down," Dr. Suber explained.

The part of the brain where the needle was lodged helps Lucy control her stability. At first, she couldn't walk or stand. But just a few days later, Lucy is nearly back on her feet again.

Lucky Lucy is expected to make a full recovery, although she may have some trouble with her balance. Read all about it and see a slideshow of images at WECT6. You can also watch a news video at NBC Augusta.

Sweet little Lucy, get well soon.

Wiener Dog, you ready to go huntin'? Enjoy this super fun new Dachshund hunting video from Nature Reporter Richard Moore.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Flash, Alven and Dottie!

Thanks so much to Sandra O. for writing in with these great photos and a nice story about the Dachshunds who own her. And they've got their very own blog, so update your bookmarks and check them out every day at the fantastic Tales From A Doxie. Without any further ado:

Hi Joey and Maggie!

I recently discovered your blog and I was so excited to see that it was about dachshunds. I also have some dachshunds in my family: Flash (black and tan mini who is 8yrs old), Alven (red standard long haired who is 1.5yrs old) and I also count Dottie who is a 6 month old lab/corgi/dachshund mix (hey as long as there's some doxie in there, right?).

All of my three dachshunds are rescues, but the first one that came home with me was Flash. I fell so in love with him that I made him his own blog too. When Flash first started his blog, with my assistance, I thought everyone would think I was missing a couple of marbles. In order to feel less self-conscious about it I told myself it was just a fun way to keep the family updated on how he was doing, but secretly I loved putting up new posts. Now that I've discovered there is a whole world of other doxie bloggers I am thrilled to know I'm not alone.

Yep, all us Dachshund Lovers are a little crazy for our Dachshunds!

Midwest Dachshund Festival Photos and Recap

It was another great year at the Midwest Dachshund Festival in Danville, Illinois on Saturday. This was the 13th year for the event, which is now sponsored by Dachshund Rescue of North America.
We headed down Friday afternoon, it was about a 3-hour drive. We were restless in the car wondering if we were going to see grandma and grandpa, two of our favorite people in the world. But when we got to the hotel, we kinda remembered the smells, and knew that a big Dachshund event awaited us the next day. We could hardly sleep we were so excited.
We got up at about 6 AM to go outside and do our duties. Dad was busy packing all his stuff back up in the hotel room, (actually it was mostly OUR stuff), and then we argued with the hotel clerk when we were checking out for charging us a $25 pet fee on the room. Last year, it was $5/dog. He said "it's on the website, and it's supposed to be $25/dog, so we gave you a break." Yeah, right. We stood our ground, he called the manager, and they reduced it to $10 total. Don't mess with Dachshunds. We won't be staying there next year.
We finally got to the event, which started at 10 AM, and could hear all the dogs barking from inside a big metal building at the fairgrounds. There were over 300 Dachshunds in attendance. Joy! We sniffed more butts than we really care to mention.
There was plenty to do and see - wiener races, costume contests, multiple rescue groups (lots of available dogs), contests for oldest Dachshund, biggest Dachshund (not fattest!), parades for IVDD dogs, you name it.
There was also plenty of Dachshund paraphernalia to buy - some of the vendors included Dachshund Delights, the Greener Wiener, III Dachshunds Beer, meetup groups, and many of the rescue groups had lots of stuff to buy, as well as silent auctions and raffles.
We were getting exhausted. Maggie was tired of walking around, so she sat with our friends at the Dodgerslist booth for about an hour to relax.
Then it was all over at 3 PM! We weren't done yet though. We sat with our friends at our picnic table outside after the event for 3 more hours, enjoying food, wine, and song (Dad brought his boombox of course.)
Finally, it was time to go home, and we slept like logs the whole way back to Chicago. We're still exhausted. It was great to see all of our friends, and we really appreciate all the hard work that went into this event.
Enjoy the pics.

Those Special Dachshunds: Happy 15th Birthday Max!

Will you look at what a handsome guy 'Max' is? It's no wonder he's a champion. May bones rain from the sky on this day, his 15th birthday! His human, Jean S. writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

Max, aka Ch. Gemdach’s King of Hearts , turns 15 today, September 14th. He’s a retired show dog living the good life in Texas. He credits his longevity and good health to acupuncture, Chinese herbs and lots of healthy snacks and love from his family. He loves to snooze in the sun and foster less fortunate dachsies through DFW Dachshund Rescue.

We had a great time at DRNA's Midwest Dachshund Festival in Danville, Illinois, on Saturday! Thanks so much to DRNA, all the rescue groups in attendance, and all the vendors who came out to put on such a great event.
Photos and a recap are forthcoming. Our photos didn't turn out so hot - we don't like using a flash - and they were a bit blurrier than expected. Regardless, we'll salvage what we got and post photos and news media links soon.
We did get a kick out of this photo though.

Checking Out The Competition

You think you're faster than me?! 'Scoot' (left) checks out 'Ringo,' his competition, moments before the race Saturday morning at the 15th annual Wiener Dog Championship Races held at Harrah's Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, Louisiana. The event was a benefit for Animal Welfare Inc.

My Wena - The Clean Version

Thanks so much to our friends 'Oscar' and 'Hans' who write:

Hey Joey and Maggie!

Check out this "other" version of the "My Wena" song. We thought the original was hilarious, but this one is just Wienerific!

--Oscar and Hans

OK Wiener Lovers - which version is your favorite?

Download My Wena by Bowling For Soup at itunes or pre-order the new album, Sorry for Partyin' at Amazon.

Who is 'Wena' the Wiener Dog?

Wena is 'Lexie,' a beautiful black and tan smooth Dachshund whose human is flickr photographer Hope H. You can see lots of great photos of Lexie in her photo set.
Her human notes about this photo: Lexie was selected to appear in the new Bowling For Soup music video!! The song is called "My Wena" and she plays Wena! Her scene is a dream sequence where Jaret the lead singer is dreaming of his girlfriend and wakes up to find Lexie/Wena in his bed. He smiles, snuggles with her and goes back to sleep. We had a great time and all the guys were really nice.

Lexie's salary was a donation to

My Wena
Her name is 'wena'
Hey have you seen her
Everyone says she's amazing
She gets so jealous
She sticks her head up
When i'm checking out the ladies

And she needs so much attention
She's always hanging around

My wena is lonely tonight
(my wena)
She cries when i turn out the light
(my wena)
She's only happy when i'm holding her tight
Oh, my wena
Take a look at my wena

My little wena
Queen of the scene
And all the girls wanna be around her
Her skin is so soft
I can't keep my hands off
Ever since the day i found her

And she'll make your heart beat faster
With the wink of an eye

My wena is lonely tonight
(my wena)
She cries when i turn out the light
(my wena)
She's only happy when i'm holding her tight
Oh, my wena
Have you seen my wena
Get a load of my

Sometimes she can't sleep at night
And i wake up and she's just a looking at me
And she snuggles so tight
When it's cold outside
She likes to show off
When we're walking the beach
And she's always up for going extra innings
And she's a sucker for a happy ending
And we may not always agree
But she's always here with me

My wena is lonely tonight
She cries when i turn out the light
She's only happy when i'm holding her tight
Oh, my wena
Take a look at my wena

My wena is lonely tonight
(my beautiful wena)
She cries when i turn out the light
(she wants to get her dream)
She's only happy when i'm holding her tight
Oh, my wena
My wonderful wena

Dachshund Survives Mouse Poison Ingestion Thanks To Blood Transfusion From Labrador

In a scary yet heartwarming story, a 4-year-old, 85-pound chocolate labrador retriever named 'Ginger' is a hero after her humans agreed to allow her to donate blood to 'Jerzee,' a 3-year-old miniature dachshund who ingested either mouse poison, or a mouse who had ingested mouse poison. Jerzee, who hails from Cedar Point, Kansas, became ill in the middle of August, and her human, Cristi Soyez, took her to the vet after noticing she wasn't getting better, and had blood in her stools.
The Animal Health Clinic of Marion County recognized poison ingestion and contacted Ginger's humans to see if they would be willing to donate her blood for a transfusion. They did so with "no hesitation," and Jerzee is happy and healthy today thanks to Ginger.

“So, when you see a 15-pound dog in Cedar Point, pointing out birds and retrieving, that is Jerzee — part doxie and part Labrador,” Soyez said. “This just goes to show that blood donors come in all shapes, sizes, and species.”

Wyoming Dachshund Rescue Raises $4,000 at Dachshund Derby

Congrats goes out to Wyoming Dachshund Rescue for raising over $4,000 this past Sunday at their Dachshund Derby and Corgi Classic fundraiser in Wheatland, Wyoming! Way to go! That'll help a lotta Dachshunds! Above, Cheyenne resident Max Diefenderfer adjusts his dog Gus’ hat during the costume contest. Excerpt from the Record-Times:

“People in town were extremely generous,” event organizer Linda Szymanski said.
According to Szymanski, the fundraiser helped get the Rescue “into the black,” and helped offset heavy veterinary bills incurred this year. The races brought in $1,000 more than last year’s event.
The Wyoming Dachshund Rescue adopted out 30 dogs this year, and 20 in 2008. Szymanski said the Rescue houses dogs from throughout Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado, and even Kansas and Missouri.

Meet Stephen and Gail Valenti, who hail from Metairie, Louisiana, and their beloved blue and tan smooth 'Smokey,' who passed away last year at just 5 years old after a bout with lymphoma cancer. The Valentis were so distraught after losing their little friend that their oncologist referred them to counseling for their grief.

“We visited with the counselor one time for about two hours and she was just wonderful,” Stephen Valenti said. “She got us over the hump — as it were.”
“She was wonderful,” Gail Valenti said. “She had dachshunds also and that helped.”

The Valentis now have an isabella and tan Dachshund named 'Izzy.' They highly recommend counseling when grieving over the loss of a pet. Read all about it at the Advocate.

Willy
Now meet cute little red shaded smooth 'Willy,' when he was a puppy, in 1993. Willy hailed from St. Petersburg, Florida, and passed away this last April after a happy life with his family. His human, Arleen Spenceley, recalls the wonderful memories that Willy left them with:

My parents, my brother and I sat in a circle on the kitchen floor of our home in Spring Hill and put Willy in the middle. He frolicked, like puppies do, into my mother's lap. How little we knew then of how much he would make us laugh, all we would learn from him and how much we would love him.
With Willy also came lessons. I learned to how to clean up after someone. I learned to share a bed. I learned to ignore his breath and let him lick my face, and how to lift a couch off a dog.
I learned to make sacrifices for the sake of somebody else. I learned to be patient. I learned to love.

Read all about Willy, who recently would have turned 16, in a great post at the St. Petersburg Times.

March of the Dachshunds in Krakow, Poland!

It was the 15th Annual Marsz Jamników (Dachshund March) in Krakow, Poland, on Sunday, a HUGE event us American Dachshunds could only dream about attending. Thankfully, the Krakow Post provided these beautiful photos.

This year's winner of the costume contest featured a coarse-haired pup dressed up as an Egyptian pharaoh, royally escorted by his human companions, who donned Arabic dress and even had a soundtrack for his majesty's entrance. Read more at the Krakow Post.

See even more fantastic photots at this translated link of Radio Krakow.

For a blogger's take on the event, don't miss The Parade of Daschunds at Walden World.

How Hydrotherapy Saved Pepper the Disabled Dachshund

Go 'Pepper' Go! If you need some Dachshund inspiration today, look no further than this 7-year-old smooth black and tan from Colchester, Essex, England. After spinal surgery, she still couldn't walk, as her muscles had wasted away, and her vet suggested euthanasia (huh?!). Her human, Joy Bloyce, wouldn't accept that and turned to hydrotherapy. We're happy to report that Pepper is walking again. Read all about it and see some nice pics at The Daily Mail.

Learn about dachshunds and Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) at Dodger's List. What a great resource. There's always a link to Dodger's List in the links column on your right. They have a very active discussion list, and are real pros when it comes to offering advice for IVDD dachshunds and general dachshund health.

Midwest Dachshund Festival 2009 This Weekend

It's keen to be green. Don't miss the Midwest Dachshund Festival this Saturday, September 12th in Danville, Illinois. Keep an eye out for us and say 'Hi!' About 400 Dachshunds attended last year; it's always a great time.

The Labor Day Dachshund

labor day wirehair
It's Labor Day, 2009, relax! Today we honor the Working Dachshund. Whether you work hard to keep your yard free of vermin, or to keep your home free from intruders, or just to keep your bowl free of kibble, this is your day to kick back, take it easy, and spend some time with your beloved family.
Specifically, today we celebrate the Dachshund who works hard to do what a Dachshund was originally bred for - to hunt.
Below is prose and poetry demonstrating the tenacity of a Dachshund named 'Verity.' The word verity dates from the 14th century and means 'the quality or state of being true or real, especially a fundamentally and inevitably true value.' What a proud name befitting the best quality of a loyal Dachshund.
This was originally written as a letter to the editor of England's Wire-Haired Dachshund Quarterly Newsletter, circa 1965:

You may have seen in the dog papers that we had lost a Miniature Wirehaired hunting coypu!
[The coypu is a water rodent.]
She was a little hunter from the tip of her nose to the last hair on her tail, but we did sometimes debate should we make her stay in more, because though size meant nothing to her, we worried in case she tackled something which would be too much for her. But hunting was her life, and I said if she could speak she would say "Let me take my chance."
Well, the day came. After going over the evidence, it seems pretty clear she tackled one - or more - coypu. and paid with her life. The following day two of our other girls proudly presented me, one with a coypu as big as a kitten, the other, one as big as little Verity herself...I think Verity must have either tackled a big one, or found a nest and been attacked by the parents.
We both felt very badly about it, but somehow I had the feeling that little Verity would say "It was worth it!"
Thinking about her, these lines started going through my mind, and I jotted them down...a small tribute to a very gallant little lass.

Verity's Creed
by Dorothy Barnish

I am a hunter, let me go free,
The hearthrug is no place for me.
Oh, there's warmth inside, and comfort too,
A ball to chase, a bone to chew, but -
I am a hunter, t'would be death to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free,
In the sun, wind and rain, moving silently,
Learning a message from the breeze, the rustle of grass,
The sigh of the trees as I silently pass,
I am a hunter, this is life to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free,
By hole and burrow waiting patiently,
I track the mole in his underground lair,
I start a rabbit, or maybe a hare,
I am a hunter, this is life to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free,
The Coypu's claws hold not fear for me.
On the mean-faced rat I wait to pounce,
The wicked weasel, the timorous mouse.
I am a hunter, this is life to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free,
Indoors has no joy for me.
I know the flailing wing, the murderous beak
Of the mother wild duck as her brood I seek.
I am a hunter, this is life to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free,
Seek not to hold or restrain me.
I know as my prey I silently track
Death can also stand at my back, but -
I am a hunter, this is life to me.

I am a hunter, let me go free.
What if I hold my life in fee,
Weep not if I fall in my strength and my pride,
The life-draining teeth sunk deep in my side.
Rejoice! I was a hunter, and lived ere I died!
