Meet black and tan smooths 'Sponge' and 'Tiger' and their human Tim Knox. Sponge and Tiger get to go to work with their dad once a week; he's the director of the Soane Museum in London's Holborn area. The house of John Soane, a bricklayer's son who became the finest British architect of his day, is the actual museum, and is exactly as Mr. Soane left it in 1837. Excerpt from Bloomberg.com: Confident, friendly and in control, Knox has a pair of black dachshunds that come into the office once a week. They sit in their master's lap, licking his trouser leg and yelping each time the door opens. Soane, too, liked dogs. A non-believer, he created a "Monk's Yard'' in a rear courtyard for a fictional Padre Giovanni, filled it with fragments of medieval ruins, and paved it with the tops and bottoms of bottles. The imaginary monk's headstone contains the remains of Mrs. Soane's dog and is marked with the words, "Alas, poor Fanny!''

This is handsome red smooth 'Elvis,' from Castleton, England. Don't tell Elvis that he's disabled, because he has no idea. All he knows is that he's happy. He's even got his own suede shoes for his hind legs. Go, Elvis, Go! Excerpt from the Rochdale Observer: Miniature dachshund Elvis is proving a wheel hit around town. The eight-year-old slipped a disc and his back legs are paralysed but he is able to get out and about with the aid of a special ‘wheelchair’ fitted with suede shoes.
Owner Christine Banks, of Castleton, said: "The chariot is no bigger than a skateboard – it straps around his front, his feet go in two little suede shoes and it has two wheels at the back. Both St. Louis and New Orleans hosted Barkus parades this past weekend, and St. Louis also offered wiener races! Dachshunds in Pop Culture: "Head Trip" The Movie

Huh? A few years ago, San Francisco's iconic Doggie Diner dachshund heads made a journey across the country on a flatbed trailer, towed by a bus full of more San Francisco characters. Making its World Premiere today in Alameda, California, the documentary Head Trip, a film by John Law and Flecher Fleudujon, chronicles that cross-country trek. Congrats to the filmmakers on their World Premiere!
The journey takes the group deep into America - into a run-in with Homeland Security in Arizona, adventures at Graceland, and into New York - where kids chased the Doggie Diner Heads through Brooklyn.

What a fun photo! The 6th annual South Beach Dachshund Winterfest takes place today in Miami Beach, Florida. Doesn't look like winter to us! Over 300 dachshunds attended last year.

Meet handsome smooth black and tan 'Clams,' and his human, Mike Workman, who runs Pillar Data Systems out of San Jose, California. CNN Money had a look at executives who unwind from business pressures with exotic hobbies. Here's an excerpt: When he's not running Pillar Data Systems, Workman designs custom fireworks at his hobby factory outside Oatman, Ariz.
And we're not talking sparklers.
In 2003, at Ellison's request, Workman orchestrated a massive show in San Francisco Bay that consumed 6,000 shells in 28 minutes, at a cost of $250,000.
"The permits alone were $40,000," he says.
Though most of his shows are for personal enjoyment - out in the desert with a cigar, a glass of wine, and his dachshund, Clams - Workman competes in annual pyro­technic conventions across the West. His pièce de résistance this year? An aerial shell that will rise to 2,000 feet and shower colors across a quarter mile.

St. Louis is The Place to be for Dachshunds This Weekend

If only we didn't live 6 hours away. Dachshund lovers and their lovable companions descend upon Soulard Market Park for the annual PetSmart Wiener Dog Derby on Sunday. It's part of the huge 15th Annual Barkus Pet Parade during the Mardi Gras celebration in St Louis' historic Soulard Market district. There will be thousands of costumed dogs and friendly dog people taking part in one of the largest pet parades in the world. Find out more about the Wiener Dog Derby at MardiGrasInc. Dachshunds compete in three divisions, based on age: cocktail wienies, ballpark franks and hot dogs. Woof!

Dachshund Tales: A Look at Kevin Kling

Who? Kevin Kling, who hails from Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a commentator for National Public Radio, and an acclaimed storyteller, humorist, and playwright. He has released 5 CDs of his work, including the above Stories Off the Shallow End, released in 2000.
His dachshunds are 'Olive' and 'Fafnir.' "They have the most can-do attitude," Kling says, "with the least can-do bodies."
There's a story off of the above CD, called Dogs, where Mr. Kling talks about the loss of his mutt 'Charger,' and learning to love his new dachshund 'Fafner.' It's side-splittingly HILARIOUS. Have a listen by just clicking here. It will make your day!

Are you getting this hint, Dad? Did you get the hint from the previous post on pet sitters? We're so incredibly bored while you're at work!
Meet handsome 1-year-old black and tan wire hair 'Bismark,' and 9-year-old King Charles Cavalier 'Sunshine,' of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They're standing on either side of dog walker Gina Downs, the "Pet Nanny," in a fenced-in area where she walks the dogs she cares for.
Dog walking is a HUGE business. One Philadelphia dog-walking business, PhilaPets, boasts a $650,000 gross last year. This year, that business is hoping to make a million.

"I Have a Dream" is the popular name given to the historic public speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., when he spoke of his desire for a future where blacks and whites among others would coexist harmoniously as equals.
Today, as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, Joey is reminded of this dream, and his desire as a piebald dachshund to be accepted as a breed standard by the American Kennel Club. Joey wants to know: What's not right about white?
By no means is this slightly tongue-in-cheek post intended to, in any way, belittle the struggle that African Americans have dealt with in this country. But certainly, some parallels can be drawn upon in the simplest concepts of 'black' and 'white.' Dachshunds are probably the most diverse breed of dogs, and the AKC accepts all combinations of sizes, colors, patterns, and coat types except white.
According to archaeologist, historian, and dachshund lover Iris Love, the piebald dachshund may very well be the progenitor of the dachshund that we know and love today. The piebald dachshund can clearly be seen in photographs and images spanning over the last 100 years, and very possibly, according to Mrs. Love, the ancient Egyptian times.
And talk about a controversial topic. We're reminded of a breeder's response about white on dachshunds in the film Wiener Takes All: "Ask me next year" is all he said. When the filmmaker returned a year later to ask him again, his reply was again "Ask me next year." Clearly, this topic has divided the dachshund community.

'Jesus' Held Hostage Over Dachshund 'Poopie'

UPDATE 3:30 PM CST: Jerry S. writes: Jean told WZZM 13 News the statue had been returned, taken not by neighbors but by a family member. She declined to explain further, only that this has now become a family situation.

Oh, the insanity! Meet one of Jean Mansel's four dachshunds. Jean lives in Oakbrook Township, Michigan, and says that one of her neighbors took her 80-pound cement Jesus, a family heirloom, and then called to indicate why it was removed. Excerpt from WorldNetDaily: "My husband got a phone call and a real graspy voice over the phone said, 'Check your mailbox,'" she told WZZM-TV.
Inside the mailbox was a ransom note.
"The note basically said they were holding Jesus for ransom," Mansel said.
The message on the handwritten note states:

We are holding Jesus ransom until you clean up the poopie from your wieners and trust us we see you take your wieners for long walks w/out picking up their poopie in our yards. This has upset us dearly so please clean up all the wiener poopie, if you want to see Jesus unharmed. Sincerely, Lindy Lane Residents.

Mansel has four wiener dogs and told the station there was a complaint last year about conducting their business on other people's lawns. But she says she's cleaned up every pile since. She says she just wants her statue back, and won't press charges if the cement Jesus isn't harmed.

We hope that Mrs. Mansel gets her Jesus statue back, and that things settle down on Lindy Lane. Maybe the street should be renamed 'Shady Lane' because of such shady activities.

Dachshunds Show in Bangalore, India

The 86th and 87th All India Championship Dog Shows took place in Bangalore, India, over the weekend. The championships, organized by the Mysore Kennel Club saw more than 470 canine contestants of 53 breeds.
The wire-hair dachshund was listed as one of the 'rare breeds' among the particpants for this India showing.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Hugh Walpole

Who? Dachshund Lover Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (March 13, 1884 - June 1, 1941) was an English novelist. The son of an English minister, he was born in Auckland in New Zealand and educated in England. He worked as a teacher before turning to writing full time. He was a prolific and versatile writer whose works came to include short stories, gothic horror novels, biographies, plays, and screeplays. Walpole was knighted in 1937.
We don't know the name of his red long-hair dachshund, but he did include some dachshund references in his writings. From The Joyful Delaneys (1938): "He worshipped his sister, owned a dachshund called Endless, to whom he confided many of his best witticisms; he found most people extraordinarily funny." From The Inquisitor (1935): "Poor Mrs. Porteous, a colourless lady with a harassed eye and short legs that gave her an odd resemblance to a dachshund, admired him now so tremendously that he became to her St. Paul and Mussolini rolled into one."

Suzanne Pleshette (January 31, 1937 - January 19, 2008) was an American actress, primarily known in character-type roles. The naturally brunette-headed Pleshette was best known for her role as Bob Newhart's wife, Emily Hartley, on The Bob Newhart Show in the 1970s.
Our favorite movies of hers included Hitchcock's The Birds, and of course, The Ugly Dachshund. We'll miss you Suzanne.

Dachshunds in the Ringling Brothers Circus

We're not so sure of what to make of this....dachshunds in the circus, but it's not a new concept. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in Macon, Georgia this weekend, and the show's publicist Jillian Collett says, "They're miniature dachshunds and it is just the cutest little thing. ... They jump over each other and roll over in unison. ... It's just too cute. ... This is a brand-new show. Macon's only like the fourth or fifth city to get it. So crowds that we've played thus far have gone just nuts." (Source)

Story: An 85-year old British Lady by the name of Mary Woodbridge, who takes her dachshund 'Daisy' for a daily walk, buys a Mammut jacket to proctect herself from the wind and weather. This jacket is obviously so good that the elderly lady believes that she can climb Mount Everest wearing it....

The Dachshund Slips to Number Seven in National AKC Registration

Well, we're lucky number seven! The AKC released their 2007 registration statistics today, and, based on AKC stats, dachshunds remain in the Top 10 Most Popular Dogs in America. WOOF!
We're ranked at number 7 this year, a slight drop from last year's 6. We swapped places with the boxer, who moved up from 7 to 6. We don't mind though. We got a good thing going on. This is all just a part of the master plan of The Dachshund Revolution.

Dachshunds Take the Catwalk in Tokyo

Tokyo was the place to be this last weekend as Japan's first 'New Year Dog Party' kicked off on Saturday. The two-day event also hosted Pet Fashion Week NY, the annual New York City trade show that began in 2006 as an event for people in the pet industry. There were over 20,000 people in attendance. Stealing the show was the chocolate dachshund pictured above, modeling a $20,000 Swarovski crystal-studded dog coat, by the designer Manfred of Sweden. Read all about it at The Independent. Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Marianne Koch

Who? Marianne Koch (born August 19, 1931) is an author, physician, and retired German actress of the 1950s and 1960s, best known for her appearances in Spaghetti westerns and adventure films of the 1960s.
She appeared in over 65 films between 1950 and 1971 including Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars in 1964 in which she appeared alongside Clint Eastwood.
She returned to college in 1971 to study medicine, and practiced an an internest in Munich until 1997. We don't know the name of her wire-hair dachshund. Find out more about Marianne Koch at this translated German wikipedia link.

Meet red smooth 'Mylee Star' and her 7-year-old human Kennedy Dillow, of Jackson, Missouri. Kennedy and Mylee are pictured here at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, where Kennedy is about to donate $803, money she earned making and selling jewelry to help animals in need. This is after she donated $1,047 last summer! Wow! Mom won't let Kennedy have any more animals at home; she has another doxie 'Zoey Belle,' and 10 fish. Mom says "This is a way Kennedy can help more animals."

Dachshund Lover Joan Ingpen Dies at 91

The unfortunate news of the death of dachshund lover Joan Ingpen was announced this week. She passed December 29th at the age of 91. Ingpen was a legendary figure among opera impresarios who introduced the musical world to Luciano Pavarotti, Georg Solti, and Joan Sutherland; co-founded the Philharmonia with Walter Legge; and played major casting and administrative roles at three of the world's leading opera houses: Covent Garden, Paris Opera and the Met in New York. Joan Ingpen is pictured above with her first husband Alfred Dietz and her business partner 'Williams,' her black and tan smooth dachshund.
Excerpt from The Telegraph: Joan Ingpen's abiding legacy will be Ingpen & Williams, the management agency that she founded in 1946. The most prominent London concert promoter at that time was Ibbs & Tillett, and Ingpen felt that any respectable impresario should similarly have a double name, giving the impression of being a solid partnership.

A Look at Fostering Dachshunds

Meet rescues black and tan smooth piebald 'Abby,' and black and tan smooth 'Norman.' They're pictured with dachshund lover Benny Archuleta, of Jacksonville, Florida, a saint in the world of dachshunds and dachshund rescue. Among many dachshund-related rescue and other activities, Mr. Archuleta maintains the Dachshund Rescue Web Page.

He also maintains that the dedicated foster families are the true backbone of rescue.

Jacksonville.com had a look at fostering in the Jacksonville, Florida, area. Here's an excerpt: Norman bounded across the room and leaped into Benny Archuleta's lap, putting himself nose to nose. Norman then put his paws on Archuleta's chest and licked his face, giving him a wet, slobbery kiss.
Yes, Norman is a dog, a dachshund to be specific, but this dog loves Archuleta because he rescued Norman and put him in a foster home.
"A rescue by definition is an unwanted dog. I was shocked to know how many dachshunds are unwanted, and we just want these dogs to be wanted," said Mona Cortellesi, who fosters Norman and several other dachshunds with her husband, Robert. "They just want to be loved and they give a lot of love in return."

Meet the dachshund "Tom Brady"

In a follow-up to yesterday's story, meet handsome little English Cream(?) longhair 'Tom Brady.' Excerpt from the Boston Herald: Tom Brady is dogged by fans - even in the Big Apple - but the New England Patriots QB/QT doesn’t bite!
That’s according to music exec Brad Davidson, aka Wiener Dog Man, who played defense for No. 12 yesterday, telling us that his football hero was much nicer in person than he appeared on a video posted on TMZ.com.
Of course he was.
“I think he thought it was a setup, but when he noticed I was wearing a Pawtucket Red Sox hat he realized I was a true fan,” Brad told the Track.
In the videoclip, Tom appears amused when a star-struck Brad tells him the name of his little hot dog. Brady reluctantly shakes the fan’s hand and flees into the car, where he is heard to complain to the driver that fan facetime is the “story of my life.”
But Davidson said Tom’s the victim of a bad call.
“In the car he was laughing and said (it was) nice meeting me and he even said bye to little Brady,” said the Pats fan.

Tom Brady Meets Dachshund "Tom Brady"

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady met some of his fans on Monday in New York: dachshunds 'Tom Brady' and 'Fenway.' Tom, the human, seemed to be a little bewildered by it all. Tom, the dachshund, was probably crushed that he didn't get a little pat on the head from his idol and namesake.
TMZ provided the video, and the Boston Herald provided a recap: The video posted yesterday shows the newly crowned AP Offensive Player of the Year exiting galpal Gisele Bundchen’s pad in the Apple Monday morning carrying a white canvas bag and pink dog carrier containing Vida, Gi’s Yorkie.
Let’s break down the tape: Tom runs into a fan, wearing a Red Sox cap, walking a pair of Dachshunds on the sidewalk as he makes his way past the paparazzi to a waiting town car.
“Hey, man, wanna know what the name of my dog is? Tom Brady! Swear to Gawd, swear to Gawd,” the Boston sports fan tells his football idol.
Tom looks down at the hot dog hound and laughs.
“I’m a huge, huge fan,” says Wiener Dog Man, shaking Brady’s reluctantly offered hand. “Fenway’s the other dog. Awesome man, good luck. We’ll be rootin’ for ya.”
Brady, with a hang-dog expression, then tosses his bag - but thankfully not Vida - in the trunk of the car whose driver is heard to say, “Sorry about this.” Tom woofs back, “Story of my life.”
Tom’s supermodel sweetie reportedly left for a fashion show in her native Brazil Sunday night, and left her pint-sized pooch in the care of her pigskin prince, who brought the Yorkie to Boston.

Meet pretty 'Myko' and 'Fira' from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They won for 'best family or group of pets' in The Chronicle Herald's 4th Annual Petpourri Pet Photo Challenge. Way to go Myko and Fira! It's hard work to look that cute!

Myko and Fira's human, Danielle King, says her dynamic dachsie duo "love to entertain, cuddle and enter speed-eating competitions."

Bayou Dachshund Club Field Trials

Dachshunds like to work hard and play hard! The Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans held a Dachshund Field Trial on Saturday in Prentiss, Mississippi. After the trials and awards, there was a 'field trial parade,' where the doxies and humans were dressed in a Mardi Gras theme.
