All About Bette: Fasten Your Seatbelts, It's Going To Be A Bumpy Night

Kisses!

Please welcome your newest hostess to 'The Long and Short of it All.'  Her name is 'Bette,' as in Davis.  No, not Middler!  It's been nearly two months now since Joey has passed, and Rowdy was so incredibly bored that we started to look for a buddy for him.  It's a terrifying task to adopt another long dog after one has passed, with so many guilt factors closing in around you, from "it's never, ever, enough time so that I pay respect to the wonderful dog which has passed," to "how do I make the right decision to adopt a new friend?"  You think about these things through the course of your daily life:  "after THIS dog, the NEXT one is going to be this way.  We are going to do things like THIS, and boy will everything be great."
It's been my dream for some time to be able to be owned by a Standard Dachshund.  A Big Giant Black and Tan Dachshund - almost a rarity in today's age of the popular mini's.  Shortly after Joey passed, a beautiful big Red Smooth was available through our local Dachshund Rescue, Rowdy's alum, MidWest Dachshund Rescue.  But it was just two weeks after the loss of Joey, and was just too soon.  And in just two days, the big handsome guy was adopted - GONE just like that.
Maybe once a year or so will we ever see a Standard Dachshund come up for adoption in rescue.  A good friend started to put out feelers among her reputable breeder friends - is there an adult Standard Dachshund out there who maybe has been showing, but has gone sterile, or who has finished showing and is looking for a permanent place to call home?
Enter Bette.  She and her littemates were bred for show, but as the 9th and last puppy available in a November litter, she needed a non-show home because of an underbite.  We took one look at that underbite which causes her bottom lip to stick out and thought - just makes you want to kiss that little lip!  So, while we weren't looking for a puppy really, we couldn't pass up this opportunity to give this girl a home.
Her breeder is fantastic - if all dogs came from breeders like this, there would be no dogs in Rescue.  A contract was signed that stated if we came to a point in our lives that we could not care for the dog, the dog is to be given back to the breeder where she will always have a home.  Other points in the contract included a spay clause, and that "this dog must never be tied up outside," but is to be kept as a dog in the home.  While we are still struggling with not getting a dog through Rescue, we are also proud to support the fine Dachshund breeders out there who are doing it for the love of the Dachshund breed, and not just for money.

And we're in love with little Bette - she is so snuggly, and so sweet.  She is just beautiful.  At 4 months old, she weighs a whopping 12 pounds.  She should be somewhere between 25 and 28 pounds when fully grown.  She and Rowdy get along famously - they bonded immediately, and after sleeping together, they run and run and run and run and run. Bette gives Rowdy a run for his money when they play together - she doesn't take any crap - and it won't be too long before his little sister will be his big sister.  Rowdy is so happy!
From somewhere up above, we know that Joey and Maggie are smiling down on us and our new adventures.

Oh yeah, turn up the volume.

  2. oh - congratulations!! She is absolutely beautiful!! Glad to see the post! No better way to honor both Maggie and Joey by showering Bette and Rowdy with love!

  3. Welcome beautiful sweet girl! Our last doxie was a black and tan standard. Not long-haired but otherwise the same. As my old vet would say he was "built like a tank". I hope Bette has a wonderful life and enjoys hanging out with Mr. Rowdy. And you will never forget Joey or Maggie and will always be honoring them.

  4. She is beautiful! Congratulations. I love the standards too, they are the reason I fell in love with the breed, but you are right, they are few and far between. Glad Bette found her way to you and Rowdy.

  6. Wow, congrats are in order, Bette is sweet. You are right about that bottom lip, very kissable. Named after one of my favorite actresses, being a huge classic film fan. Dachshunds and classic film, there's my perfect afternoon in a nutshell. Best wishes for a long and happy life together!

  12. She is soooo pretty!! Love her! I had clicked on your link because i was going to delete from my favorites....since there were not going to be more updates, and am so glad I did!! That's really wonderful and sounds like the breeder you got her from is truly a gem! I went through the same thing recently, as my old girl passed and while I wanted another, I was also somewhat hesitant. I decided to adopt a rescue girl, isabella dapple who I have named Tallulah Blue. She is a nut, and is actually a great addition. Glad things are going well, and that a new chapter begins for all of you. Melanie

  14. Rowdy, Bette & Carson,

Cinnamon's humans from PA here. Hey! It's not professional for me to cry at work, but the arrival of your beautiful Bette, and a new post from TLASOIA, brought me to tears. Bless you, Carson and Rowdy, for deciding to share your home & life with 100% perfect, and adorable, Bette. Regardless of the potential size difference, that Rowdy and Bette have hit it off so famously will have them loving, and looking out for each other, forever.

I also know, from a red smooth mini Dachshund source who shall remain nameless (!) that Maggie & Joey feel they shared their earthbound years with the greatest Dad in the world, and in a home they will remember, and love, forever.

    Peace & Love,

  25. Oh Carson so very happy for you and Rowdy and especially Bette who could not have gone to a better home. I know just.how very much you love Joey and Maggie and rest assured that they are smiling their blessings down on you Rowdy
and Bette. So looking forward to our next meetup. It is an emotional conflict between rescue and reputable breeding and I know it well . I am friends with an out of state reputable breeder that only sends her pups to reputable loving homes but also in addition takes in local dachsies in need of rescue in her relativelyremote western area and adopts them out. Of course I am the.staunchest supporter of MWDR and rescue.Congratulations to Carson and his.loving.dachsie family here and in Heaven.

  26. So happy for you! We have one long haired tweenie and two standard smooths and couldn't be happier. We, too, went to a phenomenal breeder for our standards.... it's so nice that really good breeders DO exist!! (and it's practically the only way to get a standard doxie) I hope your new baby brings you as much joy as Joey did and as much as our standard babies bring to us! CONGRATS!!!

  27. Yay! Welcome Bette!

  28. Congratulations! I cried over your loss of Joey - I lost my wonderful doxie (Beaner) two years ago at the age of 16 and I've never known such grief. I was encouraged to look into doxie rescue about 2 months after Beaner passed - I thought it might be too soon, but I found another doxie (Monty) and I know Beaner approves.

  29. I am delighted beyond words about Bette. I have had longhairs for many years, all minis. And this year I got my first Standard. Oh what a world of delightful differences! Rowdy had to be lonely with the loss of Joey. This new girl will given him a run for his money and there will be lots of laughs. Keep your camera handy.

  35. She is lovely! Enzo is a standard and he's massive. The vet said he shouldn't weigh as much and he should lose weight. He's not even fat or chubby, I think she's just never seen a dachshund so big before. To be honest, neither had I! :)

A friend and I were discussing getting a new pet shortly after the death of another pet. He said something very sage, 'It's not about replacing the pet you lost. That's impossible. It's about admitting that the love of your pet and that kind of relationship is important and that you want it in your life.' I think he's spot-on with that.

  39. Congratulations to Bette for being adopted into a true doxie-lover home. My Gretel thinks she is looking into a magnifying mirror - underbite and all. It is so wonderful to hear how lucky she is. And I am sure Rowdy is in his glory having a playmate and companion. Can't wait to hear all the Rowdy and Bette stories.

We lost our red chow Sami at 15 & Tango Puss at 21 with 2 wks of each other over this past Easter break. We were so fortunate to have adopted "Charity Hope Valentine" a b&t 10 yr old standard doxie into our home. Shelby our blonde chow would have been lost w/out Hope! As would have we.
