Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ~George Santayana
On Tuesday, April 23, 1918, Philadelphia's
Evening Public Ledger ran a series of WW1 photos with the title: PICTURESQUE ECHOES OF WAR AND THE GRIM REALITY ARE CONTRASTED BY THE CAMERA'S EYE. Included among those was this shocking photo.
The caption read: YOU ARE CHALLENGED by this grizzled but valiant Civil War veteran to "do your bit" in helping him hang the Kaiser's pet dachshund to the gallows specially created for the purpose at the Penn Square Post office. The price is as many Liberty Bonds as you can buy from this doughty G.A.R veteran, George Good.
Oh dear oh dear....But that is just why we should be reminded of such bad beliefs and practices - so we never do anything so ignorant and cruel again.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's dreadful. :-(
