Wirehair Wednesday: From Rowdy With Love

Rowdy, December 7, 2011

It's Wednesday, and that can mean only one thing - yep, it's Wirehair Wednesday!  Lots of good folks have been asking about the new addition here at the World Headquarters of The Long and Short of it All, our own wirehair boy 'Rowdy.'  Well, he's doing just great!  He keeps us busy with his antics - Joey and Maggie were nothing like this little wild-man when they were puppies.  He just turned 7-months-old a few days ago, and still acts like a 3-month-old who plays ALL THE TIME!  We figure since the first 4 or 5 months of his life were spent behind bars 24/7 that he's still got a lot of exploring to do to understand all that goes on around him.  He loves his toys of any shape and size and always carries one around in his mouth, almost like a mother dog would carry around one of her pups.  Sometimes he'll even carry a toy out when it's time to go outside to do his business, which attracts lots of smiles from all the busy city people on their way to catch the morning subway.
His house training is going very well - he has had just 4 accidents in the house in the two months that he's been with us, and half of those were our fault for not reading his cues that he needed to go out, so no complaints in that department.  He was peeing on the blankets in his crate we discovered though, and talked to a dog trainer friend of ours who suggested that we remove the blankets (it's a human thing), and no crate accidents since.  We're hoping that he will earn the blankets back in his crate in a few months, but since he went potty in his crate the first several months of his life, that is what he thinks he is supposed to do, and it will take time to retrain that behavior.
He gets along with Joey well, but Joey is a laid-back guy who gets along with everyone.  They like to play together after they eat, but when Joey has had enough, he'll growl and gently bite Rowdy to tell him to stop.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, and Dad may have to intervene if Rowdy is getting too rough for Joey, who will soon turn 11.  They do lay together and sleep together, and it's great to watch them lick each other's faces and snuggle together - Joey will even roll on his back while Rowdy licks his face.
We still miss our Miss Maggie terribly, but Rowdy, and his cute little mug that puts a smile on our face every time we look at him, has sure brightened up our lives.

  2. As soon as I saw Rowdy's cute little mug, I was smiling too! I can imagine that his "toddler" antics keep Joey in a good mood and Carson in a happy place.
    Bless you all!

  6. It is always hard to know when it is time for a new pet after you lose one. Being a lifelong dog and cat owner, I know that sometimes a new addition can help heal the sadness. Rowdy is adorable and I am sure Joey likes having a little brother. :)

Oh... Thank you for letting us know how you, Joey, and Baby Rowdy are doing! It sounds like things are good - it sounds like you have your hands full!! Rowdy is darling, with his little red collar.
In this new pic he has sort of a naughty look on his sweet face - like he purposely goes looking for trouble. Glad sweet Joey is being a nice big brother. May you all have many happy, healthy, wonderful years together. Sweet Maggie is in Heaven this Christmas, hopefully near my Mother. Kindly, Jayne and Annie

  10. Awww :) Thank you so much for the update. We all just melted at that adorable fuzzy face. I am so glad that everything is working out and Joey knows when to say enough -- something my Piper doesn't always do. Good for Rowdy to bring a smile to everyone's faces.

So glad it's working out, Carson. I'll bet Joey is losing some weight from all the playing!

  12. Hey there Rowdy....so glad you are settling in and having fun and making everyone laugh. That's what being a doxie is all about. When I was little I had a bad habit of peeing in my crate on my blankie. Mom took my blankie away and I missed it. She found out about this stuff called Stink Out and soaked my blankie in it and then washed it. I love my blankie now and I don't pee on it cuz it don't smell no more. 14. Lonnie, my little wirehair, used to pee on her blanket in her crate too. But, I'm guessing she got tired of being scolded and stinking of pee pee and needing a bath, so she quit doing it. :)
Wirehairs are lively little doxies! And they definitely do live up to their "clowns of the doxie world" status they have been given!
    Have fun you guys!

  16. Carson he is adorable. I wish I could play and give you a break once in awhile. Remember a tired puppy is a good puppy. It seems so long ago when Ali was little and I would go away and we had to play ball forever after I got home or she couldn't go to sleep. Those days pass all too soon. Now she just sleeps the day away and I wish she could play. He is just too cute for words. Have a Merry Christmas. I'm sure Santa will be good to him. Maggie will watch over. We love you.

  20. I also have two dachshunds, the first I got is a longhaired red named Izzy. She was such an easy puppy I decided to get another and opted for the wirehaired variety, and ended up with my second girl Winnie. The two have completely opposite personalities! Izzy is a cuddler and a lap dog while Winnie could quite literally pay fetch until your arm falls off, her energy is unbelievable! I thought she would calm down as she got older but the pair are 4 and 3 now and she hasn't slowed down a bit. We love that they both have their own unique personalities though and whether you want to play or nap, you always have a buddy who'd love to join. Glad to see Rowdy is fitting into the family. Happy Holidays to you and the whole clan!

  21. We have a little wire hair male doxie. We inherited him from our aunt who passed away. And this week we just adopted a little female mini pincher/jack russell. She is one year old. Tiny is four years old. So far, he is just tolerating her. Maybe we should have looked for a boy dog. What is stripping. Never knew about that.
