The greatest word in the world, DACHSHUND, has led to both crushing defeats and glorious victories for spelling bee contestants all over the country in the last few months. Above, it's a glorious victory for Thomas Harkins, 13, an eighth-grader at Dyker Heights Intermediate School in Brooklyn as he proudly holds the trophy as winner of the New York Daily News Spelling Bee. Congratulations! Thomas will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington on May 26-28.
The tense competition Monday at the Hunter College High School auditorium came down to a faceoff between Thomas and another Brooklynite, Diksha Brahmbhatt.
Diksha, a student at Leonardo da Vinci Intermediate School 61 in Flushing, stumbled on the word "dachshund" - a short-legged, elongated pooch - giving Thomas an opening.
